1.1. INTRODUCTION
cantidad total permanece constante.
2. Read and answer the questions:
Huge glowing clouds of steam and smoke flow upward as the space shuttle Discovery lifts off into a clear, blue sky. The huge, orange, external fuel tank holds a massive amount of liquid rocket fuel including over 1.9 million liters of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. When combined in the right proportions, hydrogen and oxygen are highly explosive, which makes them an excellent
rocket fuel. Hydrogen and oxygen cannot be taken into space in their gaseous form because they would take up too much space. The oxygen and hydrogen are compressed to such an extent they become liquid. This compressing process actually creates heat. The heat is removed with special devices called heat exchangers. The resulting liquid oxygen (183C) and hydrogen (253C) are extremely cold, so the external tank must be insulated."
1.2. ENERGY
In all these phenomena there is something in comun: ENERGY.
Energy is a term you probably use every day. You say that eating a plate of spaghetti gives you energy, or that a gymnast has a lot of energy. A bouncing ball and a tank of gasoline also have energy.
But energy is related to something intangible. It is something that the bodies have, but we do not know how much. We only know that energy produces a change, a work or a transformation. The energy possessed by a body is called Internal Energy.
Energy is the ability to cause change. For example, energy can change the temperature of a pot of water, or it can change the direction and speed of a baseball.
The energy in a thunderstorm produces lightning that lights up the sky and thunder that can rattle windows. Energy can change the arrangement of atoms in molecules and cause chemical reactions to occur. You use energy when you change the speed of a bicycle by pedalling faster or when you put on the brakes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOPQWEE3Lds
E. Qu otras fuentes generan energa? Por qu son energas limpias?

5. Which of the following correctly describes energy?
A) Can be created.B) Can be destroyed.C) Cannot change form.D) Can cause change.
6. Which of the following describes how the total amount of energy changes during an energy transformation?
A) It increases.B) It decreases.C) It stays the same.D) It depends on.
1.2.2. Forms of energy
7. Enter below the names of the following forms of energy:
"Elastic potential energy, kinetic energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, radiant energy, thermal energy, electrical energy, gravitational potential energy".
1.3. MATTER
Oxygen, glass, and water are all examples of matter. Everything around you is matter; including things such as air and microbes, which you cannot see.
Matter is anything that has mass and volume.
Mass is the quantity of matter that a substance or object contains; the more matter, the greater the mass. For example, a bowling ball has more mass than a basketball .
Mass is usually measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg).
Ciencias de la Naturaleza 2 ESO Matter and Energy 1. 5
Volume is the amount of space taken up by a substance or object. For example, a basketball has a greater volume than a bowling ball.
The volume of a liquid is usually measured in milliliters (ml), liters (l), or cubic centimeters (cm3).
The matter have physical properties. A physical property is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the samples composition. Physical properties describe pure substances, too. Density, color, odor, taste, hardness, melting point, and boiling point are common physical properties that scientists record as identifying characteristics of a substance. Examples are:
Physical properties can be further described as being one of two types.
Extensive properties are dependent upon the amount of substance present. For example, mass, length and volume which depend on the amount of substance there is are extensive properties.
Intensive properties are independent of the amount of substance present. For example, density of a substance (d= m/V), at constant temperature and pressure, is the same no matter how much substance is present. A substance can often be identified by its intensive properties.
a) Color c) Densidad
b) Longitud d) Altura
a) Densidad
b) Masa
c) Volumen
d) Peso
Solid Fixed shape. Fixed volume. Particles are close together. Strong attractive forces between particles. Particles vibrate in all directions.
Examples:
Liquid No fixed shape, a liquid takes the shape of container. Fixed volume. Particles are close together. Attractive forces between particles are weaker in liquids than in solids. Particles are free to move past neighboring particles.
Examples:
Gas No fixed shape. No fixed volume, a gas expands to fill volume of container. Particles are very far apart. Extremely weak attractive forces between particles. Particles move freely.

1.3.2. The atoms
In the early 1980s, a powerful new instrument called the atomic-force microscope was invented.
The atomic-force microscope can magnify an object up to one million times. This magnification is great enough for the surfaces of individual atoms to be seen, as shown in Figure.
In this space, particles are moving. No one has ever seen inside an atom, so how do scientists know what atoms are made of?
An element is matter that is composed of one type of atom. An atom is the smallest piece of matter that still retains the property of the element. At least 115 elements are known and about 90 of them occur naturally on Earth.
A compound is a substance whose smallest unit is made up of atoms of more than one element bonded together.
In the Periodic Table, the elements are arranged in 18 vertical columns, or groups, and seven horizontal rows, or periods. The most representative elements are:

Ciencias de la Naturaleza 2 ESO Matter and Energy 1. 10
1.3.3. Atomic Theory
Many experiments performed by scientists during the last 200 years have established what is inside an atom. An atom is mostly empty space surrounding a tiny nucleus.
An atom consists of a nucleus made of protons and neutrons surrounded by an electron cloud. Most of the volume of an atom is the region occupied by its electrons.
Protons are subatomic particles with an electrical positive charge of +1 . Atoms of different elements differ in the number of protons they contain.
Neutrons are subatomic particles that do not have an electric charge.
Electrons are subatomic particles with an electrical negative charge of -1.
Every neutral atom of the same element contains an equal number of protons and electrons. Since a proton counts as a 1 electric charge and an electron counts as a 1 electric charge, the charges add up to zero, making an atom uncharged or neutral.
You can compare the size and mass of subatomic particles in the following table

1.4. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES
It is important to realize that in a physical change, the physical properties of a substance change, but the identity of the substance does not change. In a chemical change the identity of a substance due to the chemical properties of that substance. A new substance or substances are formed as a result of such a change.
Newspaper can undergo both physical and chemical changes. . If you fold it, you change its size and shape, but it is still newspaper. If you use it to start a fire, it will burn. Burning is a chemical change because new substances result.
24. If the volume of a substance changes but no other properties change, is this a physical or a chemical change? Explain.
25. Which is a chemical change?
A. Dissolving sugar in water.B. Breaking a bone.C. Frying an egg.D. Heating a copper pan in the oven.

Ciencias de la Naturaleza 2 ESO Matter and Energy 1. 12
1.5. MATTER AND ENERGY IN CHEMICAL CHANGES
1.5.1. Chemical equations
A chemical change is represented by a chemical equation.
To describe a chemical reaction, you must know which substances react and which substances are formed in the reaction. Reactants are the substances that exist before the reaction begins. The substances that form as a result of the reaction are called the products.
Reactans Products (Reactivos Productos)
For example, baking soda and vinegar are the common names for the reactants in this reaction, but they also have chemical names. Baking soda is the compound sodium hydrogen carbonate (often called sodium bicarbonate), and vinegar is a solution of acetic acid in water. What are the products? You saw bubbles form when the reaction occurred, but is that enough of a description?
The complete chemical equation for this reaction can be written as follows:
When you look at chemical formulas, notice the small numbers written to the right of the atoms. These numbers, called subscripts (subndices), tell you the number of atoms of each element in that compound. For example, the subscript 2 in CO2 means that each molecule of carbon dioxide has two oxygen atoms. If an atom has no subscript, it means that only one atom of that element is in the compound, so carbon dioxide has only one carbon atom.
31. Cmo leeras la ecuacin anterior?
Ciencias de la Naturaleza 2 ESO Matter and Energy 1. 13
32. Define reaccin qumica.
34. What term is used to describe the 4 in the expression 4 Ca(NO3)2?
A. Coefficient B. FormulaC. SubscriptD. Symbol
35. In chemical reactions, the atoms in the reactants rearrange to form products. There is usually a change in:
A. AtomsB. EnergyC. MassD. Molecules
36. The illustration below shows a chemical reaction.
Identify the products in the reaction.
A. NiCl2 and NaOHB. NaOH and NaClC. Ni(OH)2 and NaClD. Ni(OH)2 and NiCl2
1.5.2. Conservation of mass
http://almez.pntic.mec.es/lgum0000/Cambios_quimicos/Ley_Lavoisier.sw
37. Which statement about the law of conservation of mass is NOT true?
A) The mass of reactants must equal the mass of products.
B) All the atoms on the reactant side of an equation are also on the product side.
C) The reaction creates new types of atoms.
D) Atoms are not lost, but are rearranged
Ciencias de la Naturaleza 2 ESO Matter and Energy 1. 14
1.5.3. Balancing Chemical Equations
Now, we know that when you write the chemical equation for a reaction, you must observe the law of conservation of mass. For example:
Ag + H2S Ag2S + H2Silver + Hydrogen sulphide Silver sulphide + Hydrogen
Count the number of atoms of each type in the reactants and in the products. The same numbers of hydrogen and sulfur atoms are on each side, but one silver atom is on the reactant side and two silver atoms are on the product side. This cannot be true. A chemical reaction cannot create a silver atom, so this equation does not represent the reaction correctly.
Place a 2 in front of the reactant Ag and check to see if the equation is balanced. Recount the number of atoms of each type.
The equation is now balanced. There are an equal number of silver atoms in the reactants and the products. The numbers placed before the formulas are called coefficients. However, never change the subscripts written to the right of the atoms in a formula. Changing these numbers changes the identity of the compound.
40. How many atoms of each kind are represented by 2 Ca(NO3)2?

B. 2 atoms Ca, 1 atom N, 3 atoms O
C. 2 atoms Ca, 2 atoms N, 6 atoms O
D. 2 atoms Ca, 4 atoms N, 12 atoms O.b

1.5.4. Energy in Chemical Reactions
Where does this energy come from? To answer this question, think about the chemical bonds that break and form when atoms gain, lose, or share electrons. When such a reaction takes place, bonds break in the reactants and new bonds form in the products. In reactions that release energy, the products are more stable, and their bonds have less energy than those of the reactants. The extra energy is released in various formslight, sound, and heat.
Often, energy is released or absorbed during a chemical reaction.
There are two types:
Exothermic reactions release heat energy. When hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water the energy is released:
2 H2 +O2 2 H2O + energy
Endothermic reactions absorb heat energy. In reactions that absorb energy, the reactants are more stable, and their bonds have less energy than those of the products.
2 H2O + energy 2 H2 + O2

1.6. RATES OF REACTIONS
