Social Isolation task
Design two 3 hour activities for the following groups to encourage them to make friends and build confidence; 1) A group of young teenagers. They have all been moved from
their home towns in Scotland to Mansfield because of floods to their homes. They do not know each other and they do not know if their families are okay.
2) A group of older people (aged 70-90). They share the fact that their wives and husbands have all died recently and they have no children or extended family. They are all physically healthy but many have started to become depressed and are not looking after themselves. They do not know each other and are nervous.

Physical Environment Factors
Physical Environment Factors
Where you live and work can have a major effect on your development, health and wellbeing. On your note paper, write 10 sentences describing what you consider to be ‘poor housing’ • What is the temperature? • How many people live there? • What does it smell like? • What noises/sounds are there? • What dangers are there?
Extension – draw a detailed picture of this place
Physical Environment Factors
Using the booklet ‘Chance of a lifetime – The impact of bad housing on children’s lives’ written by ‘Shelter’, you are going to research how our environment affects our chances in life.
You will work as a group and present your findings to the class. You should also prepare a quick quiz.
Some questions have been prepared for you. Please write your answers in full.
You will mostly be using the summary on pages 8-10
Psychological factors
People have a range of different relationships in their lives;
Friendships
If a person is having problems with their family, it can affect them in a bad way
Psychological factors
Imagine that you had fallen out with a friend or family member. Begin a letter to them which explains; • What it is that has upset you • How it made you feel • What you want to happen now • Tell them you need their support.
Remember! This is fictional. It’s best that you don’t use a current or real-life situation because this can often be too upsetting in a classroom situation.
Psychological factors
Now, imagine you have had the chance to discuss it with them and they realise how you feel. They have worked hard to put things right. Begin a letter which thanks them for this, and explain how much better it has made you feel. Do you feel better physically? Do you feel better intellectually? Do you feel better emotionally? Do you feel better socially?
Psychological factors
Those we love and care about should be the ones who love and care about us in return. Having a close network of friends can lead to happiness and contentment.
Draw a quick map of your friendship groups like the one I am going to model.
What is it about these particular people that makes your life better and makes you feel good about yourself?
