I would like to highlight the upcoming Board-Community meeting to be held next Tuesday evening, November 3. This year in addition to the usual Board business we will be rolling out our new Five Year Strategy 2020. We hope you can plan to attend this important meeting. Details can be found on page three.

As you are probably also aware, next Thursday and Friday, November 5-6, are professional development days for our faculty and staff. These two days will be devoted to several key initiatives including the implementation of our Strategy 2020 focusing on the Excellent Learning goal, examining more ways to use data to help improve our programme, and a series of team, department and division meetings.

I wanted to make everyone aware of an important visitor/consultant who will be spending three days on campus in March. Dr. Michael Thompson, a renowned international child psychologist, has published and presented on a variety of topics with some specialization in the growth and development of boys. His two books: Raising Cain and It’s A Boy have proven to be best sellers and since he will be visiting next spring (March 16-18), it might be of interest for families to pick up a copy of one or both of these books prior to his visit. Dr. Thompson visited our school a few years ago and was extremely well received then so we look forward to his return.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Respectfully,

Dr. Chip Barder [email protected]

From the Head of School

We wish all the best to Sujata Thornton, 4BMShweta Mondal, G11bwho left UNIS Hanoi this week.

Dear Elementary Families,

Learning JourneysMany thanks to you for supporting our “Learning Journeys” over the past two days by attending our Open Classrooms and deepening your understanding of the Primary Years Programme and aspects of collaborative and inquiry based learning. Classrooms were buzzing with energy and excitement with many visitors commenting on how different the educational experience is for our students as compared with our own elementary schooling - many years ago for some of us! Over the coming weeks we will be hosting a series of curriculum coffee mornings to bring parents together to share our philosophy and practices on teaching and learning in the PYP at UNIS Hanoi, and how you as parents can support your child’s learning at home. Keep an eye out for your invitation.

From the Elementary SchoolVisitors to the SchoolWith so many visitors to our school for a variety of events, we are naturally very protective of our teaching time to ensure that we are providing our students with as much quality classroom instruction as possible. For this reason, we do not encourage visits to our classrooms during the school day. We ask for your understanding and cooperation in the following areas:

• Parents wishing to get a message or deliver something to their child may approach the Elementary Office where our Secretaries will be happy to relay messages and materials.

• Hosting visiting children (friends, family, past students) in classrooms for a school experience is not possible as we look to minimise disruptions to learning and classroom routines. Please refer to our Elementary Handbook on the UNIS Hanoi website for further guidelines regarding visits to the school.

Sincerely,

Megan BrazilES Principal

UNIS Hanoi proved once again that it was a United Nations school not only in name, but in practice too when two senior UN officials came to spend time with students recently.

Ms Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank Country Director for Vietnam and Mr Richard Colin Marshall, the UNDP expert on policy for poverty and social protection in Vietnam took time out of their busy schedules to speak to select groups of students about the work they do.

The presentations were organised as part of the school’s annual UN Day celebrations. And in line with

UN Officials Inspire Students to Make a Difference in the World

UNIS Hanoi’s theme for this year, the presentations centered on how each individual can play a part in creating the world we want.

Making a difference through careersMs Kwakwa spoke to the graduating class of 2015 about the diverse career options open to them at the World Bank. As part of the talk, she also revealed why she chose a lifelong career in the World Bank. She explained, “From an early age I knew I wanted to be an economist and as I come from Ghana, a developing country, there weren’t many job prospects so everyone aspired to go ‘global’. Furthermore, I have always been socially conscious and wanted to work in an area where I felt I could contribute something to the world.”

After attaining her Ph.D from Queen’s University in Canada, Ms Kwakwa applied for a position at the World Bank through their Young Professionals programme. Starting out using her economist training and despite her

stellar qualifications, Ms Kwakwa divulged that she still needed to learn new skills on the job, such as improving her French and learning about other disciplines including education and health. Her desire to work ‘in the field’ coupled with her drive to succeed has seen Ms Kwakwa steadfastly rise up the ranks to become Country Director of the World Bank in Vietnam.

Looking to the future, Ms Kwakwa advised students to develop soft skills such as teamwork. She also touched upon the professions she believes the world needs to make change happen. She shared that there is a growing need for experts in conflict resolution, early childhood development and medical research.

Commenting after the presentation, Grade 12 student, Sophia Trueblood said, “MsKwakwa’stalkwasveryhelpfulandinsightfulbecauseatouragewe’vebeengivenalotofadvicebutheradvicewasmeaningfultomebecauseitcamewithonevoiceandoneface,tellingonestory.Thismadeitmorerelatable.Shealsosaidweshouldapproachoureducationlikewewouldajob–it’sanobligationthatwemustcarryouteveryday,andnotjustwhenwefeellikeit.I’dneverconsideredthisbefore.Itwasreassuringtootoknowthatmyfuturecareerdoesn’thavetorelatetomydegree,especiallyasI’mnotyetsurewhatIwanttodoaftercollege.”

were finding out about the UN’s new Sustainable Development Goals thanks to a talk by Mr Richard Colin Marshall from the UNDP. Mr Marshall shared with the students the reason for the goals, explaining that the UN and partner governments had ‘unfinished business’ to attend to following the end of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). He further shared that “the performance of the MDGs informed where [the UN] started with the SDGs.”

Students discovered that the SDGs were made up of 17 separate goals with much stronger commitments set against them. For example, instead of reducing poverty, the UN and governments were committing themselves to eradicating poverty altogether.

Following his talk, students demonstrated real understanding of the new goals and how they too could help make a difference in the world. Ms Shannon Kelly, the Grade 8 coordinator and English teacher at UNIS Hanoi said she was delighted that students had a chance to find out more about what the UN does. She concluded, “Thisyear,wewantedtogiveourstudentsthechancetoexplorehowtheUNworkstogetherwithmanydifferentcountrieswhoallhavedifferingperspectivesonmajorissues.Thispresentation,togetherwithaminimodelUnitedNationsexerciseachievedouraim.”

INSIS - RebrandingDear UNIS Community,

Due to the continuing problems in the Middle East, Fovea Technology, the company providing UNIS Hanoi with our School Information System, has decided to re-brand our ISIS product to INSIS. The underlying name “International School Information System” is the same with only the acronym being altered.

We have already made this change to ISIS Family, now re-branded as INSIS Family. As an user you do not need to make any changes. We will be updating our website to reflect this in the upcoming weeks. Please see below the new look of INSIS Family:

Take me home!We certainly hope you ENJOYED the UN Day Community Lunch and we would like to THANK YOU AGAIN for all your DELICIOUS food contributions! Now we have some lonely left-over plates, dishes and containers that are wanting to return home. Please stop by the Advancement Office (Building 7 Room 102 upstairs) to be reunited with your long lost dishes! We will keep your dishes in the Advancement Office until Friday, November 6, before they will be donated to a new home for charity.

Hand, Foot, Mouth DiseaseRecently there have been diagnosed cases of Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease (HFMD) in Hanoi

Please observe your children daily for signs and symptoms.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common childhood disease caused by a group of viruses known as Enteroviruses which includes Coxsackie A16 (CA16) and Enterovirus 71 (EV71). The infection is spread through direct contact with the nasal discharge, saliva, feces or blister fluid of an infected person and indirectly by contaminated articles. Young children, particularly those aged less than five years, are most susceptible.

The infected person can present with the following symptoms:

• Fever• Malaise• Sore throat • Flat red dots that turn into blisters on

the palms, soles or buttocks• Flat red dots in the mouth that turn

into blistersHFMD is typically mild and self-limiting however secondary complications have been known to occur.

The following is a set of advice to help you and your family to manage HFMD at home:

1. Parents should consult a doctor early if their child has fever, flat red dots / blisters in the mouth and rash (non itchy) on the palms, soles or buttocks. Sometimes they can be found on the knees and elbows.

2. Maintain high standards of personal and environmental hygiene to minimize the spread of HFMD. Parents should ensure that their children adopt the following good practices:

• Wash hands with soap before eating and after going to the toilet

• Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or his/ her elbow

• Do not share eating utensils• Do not share any food or drinks.

3. Children with HFMD should remain at home until all the blisters have dried up. During this period, contact with other children should be avoided until the child recovers. The child should not be brought to any public or crowded places and should stay away from school and child care until fully recovered, usually 7-10 days.

4. As HFMD is infectious, other children living in the same household may also get infected. Parents should check children daily before they are allowed to go to school, child care centre or other pre-school centers. Children who come down with the infection should remain at home as described in para (3) above.

5. Parents should be alert to any change in their child’s normal behavior, e.g. irritation or sleepiness. If in doubt, parents should consult a doctor immediately.

6. Please notify the school if your child is diagnosed with HFMD at [email protected] or at Tel (04) 3758 1551 ext. 8911

CHQ and ASA Registration InstructionsPlease remember to check your primary school emails for CHQ registration instructions!

APAC VolleyballHard work, determination, and drive that just won’t quit, summed up our volleyball season this year and was on display during the APAC Volleyball tournament this past weekend in Shanghai. Players that cared so much they played through pain, filled in where needed, and supported their teammates through everything is what we saw as coaches. Although both teams battled it out for fifth place and narrowly missed winning, as coaches we took home winners in the growth and attitudes we saw. Summing up a team can be done in wins and losses, which we come out ahead in, as winners of our HAC tournament attests, but we feel that is not how we want our players or our community to

remember the 2015 UNIS Hanoi Senior Varsity Volleyball Teams. They were a group of individuals who decided they wanted to be part of something bigger, whether that meant sacrificing their own egos, or modelling their drive and determination through pain and sometimes disappointments, they became a team. They learned leadership skills, worked on resiliency and started to understand what true inspiration is. These are the memories and skills they take into future teams or future endeavours. Special thanks to our seniors who worked so hard this year and showed how sports can and should be part of their IB life!

The 2 top players for tennis were:

• Ky Anh Nguyen who placed 7 out of 12 for boys singles

This was the highest seeds UNIS Hanoi has ever received in the APAC tennis short history.

Also, this was the FIRST UNIS Hanoi 2nd place silver medal for any APAC sport!

The students also had a quick trip to the Great Wall of China with tennis racquets in hand!

Both Coach Pho and Coach Loeffler were very pleased with the entire season and loved the positive attitudes of each player.
