It is with great pleasure that I announce the

hiring of our new ES Principal for the 2015

-2016 school year. Megan Brazil has

accepted this position and we believe she

will continue the good work of Carole and

the ES team into the future.

It was extremely to gratifying to receive 57

applications for this position from around the world. 40 of

these applications were from candidates with principal

experience. I would like to thank the ES Principal Search

Advisory Task Force Members for their assistance in this

process. They were Melanie Taylor, Theresa Ulett, Michelle

Mathias, Beth Murray and Ed Gilbreath from the

faculty. Joining us were Paulina Pineda, Iftekar Ahmed and

Lori Fairbairn from the parent community. I would also

like to thank those who attended one or more of the

interview sessions and completed a feedback form. This

input was duly considered and important in the overall

decision making process. Megan's details are beside.

I would like to extend to everyone happy holidays, safe

travels, and I look forward to seeing you in the new

calendar year.

Respectfully,

Dr. Chip Barder, [email protected]

Megan is currently a key member of

the Senior Leadership Team at

GEMS World Academy Dubai

UAE, where she has spent the last 7

years in a range of impressively

growing educational leadership roles

- PYP Coordinator, ES Assistant

Principal, ES Principal, and now Assistant Head of School.

She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Postgraduate

certificate in International Education, and a Master in

Education. Megan is also known for her PYP workshop

leader role, being responsible for delivering workshops to

PYP teachers within the Africa, Europe and Middle East

regions. Since the first adventure to England to

experience the life of international educators 12 years ago,

Megan and her family have still been very much passionate

about being global citizens. She brings to us a 19 years of

experience in teaching, school administration, staff

professional development and curriculum management,

built up and enriched from IB world schools in Colombia,

India and UAE.

UNIS-Hanoi is a school she has long held in high regard

due to its commitment to ideals of the United Nations and

the important role of international education in fulfilling

that mission. For her, it is truly an honour and privilege to

serve in a community with such an important undertaking.

Megan is from Australia, and will be accompanied by her

husband Scott and their 2 children, Isabella aged 9 and

Maliah aged 5.

Today we sent home the Annual Report 2013-2014 with

the youngest child of each family, so be sure to remind

them to give you this wonderful record of our School’s

progess and results.

You can also enjoy the Annual Report on our website.

The one-page calendar for the next school year is now

published and available for you on the website or by

clicking on this link.

We hope that this will help with your planning during this

holiday season!

Today, I sent a letter to all parents informing them of the

approval of the budget and tuition for the next school year

(2015-2016). Please click HERE to read the letter.

I would like to wish all members of our UNIS Hanoi

community a happy and restful holiday. To those of you

who are moving on from Hanoi, I wish you good health

and success in the future. I look forward to seeing everyone

else back here in January.

On behalf of the Board, I wish to thank and acknowledge

the many years of volunteer service both Ms. Sarah Garner

and Ms. Lotte Brondum brought to the Board of Directors.

Sarah has resigned after six and one half years of service to

the Board. Since 2010, Sarah served as Board Chair. Joining

the Board as a parent elected member, she served as Vice

Chair from 2008-2010. Sarah also chaired the Committee

on Directors 2010-2011 and the Governance Committee

from 2008-2010, and served on the Strategy Task Force

(2009-10), Advancement Task Force (2009-10), and School

Legal Task Force (2008-2010). The Board is currently in

the process of searching for a new Board appointed

candidate to complete her four year term.

Lotte is resigning after four and one half years of service to

the Board. Lotte was a member of the Committee on

Directors in 2010-2011 and she chaired the same

committee in 2011-2012 and in 2012-2013. Lotte also

provided support to the Executive Committee on matters

of governance. The United Nations Resident Coordinator,

Dr. Pratibha Mehta, is in the process of reviewing a UN

appointment to the Board.

We commend Sarah and Lotte for their talents, dedication,

commitment and constant willingness to learn, and we wish

them all of the best in the future.

Best regards,

Ms Nandini Oomman, Acting Board Chair

Dear MSHS Families,

As we head toward Winter Break there is a

heightened sense of excitement on campus.

It is hard to believe the school year is

almost halfway over…..it seems like

opening day was just a few days ago! Time

sure flies in a busy and productive school!

UNIS Hanoi is a vibrant and busy school where we

sometimes get caught up in the whirlwind of academics and

activities, but as we approach a festive Holiday season I do

hope we can all find time to reflect and count our blessings.

Educating the whole child includes a balance between a

rigorous academic program, active involvement in a variety

of activities and building strong relationships with family

and friends.

I would like to thank Mathematics teacher Sam Trebesch

for spearheading our MSHS “Hour of Code” activity.

Paradoxically, over the past decade technology usage has

increased exponentially but the ability to write code

(programme computers) has become somewhat of a lost

art. Ms. Trebesch saw an opportunity for all MSHS

students (and many teachers) to participate in a coding

experience sponsored by Code.org. During the Hour of

Code UNIS Hanoi joined students from around the world

in an experience designed to build basic coding techniques.

Within the curriculum at UNIS Hanoi we do teach aspects

of programming and we do have many “coders” but we

also have students who shy away from this form of

expression. To assist with the activity our student coders

joined faculty members and happily served as facilitators

for less experienced students and teaches. Overall our

Hour of Code was extremely successful! For more

information please visit: Hour of Code

In closing I would like to wish our entire UNIS Hanoi

community a joyful and restful Holiday Season. I would

also like to wish the families who are leaving UNIS Hanoi

the best of luck in the future. Separate MS and HS

assemblies will honor our “leavers” but it is also important

to wish parents and families a fond bon voyage as well!

Cheers and Happy Holidays,

Pete Kennedy, [email protected]

"Creating opportunities to transform futures"

The UNIS Hanoi Scholarship Programme was launched to

celebrate the School's 25th Birthday.

Our Scholars describe their experience at UNIS Hanoi as

the turning point in their lives or the shattering of a shell to

release their potential. We want to create more

opportunities to transform more futures.

Our goal is to raise $2.5 Million USD over the next five

years to create three new Scholarships in perpetuity.

Six week campaign – Between Winter Break to Tet

Break

Every family in our community will receive a personal

invitation to make a gift with clear payment options

All faculty and staff will be invited to participate and

make a gift

Every alumni family will be invited to participate and

make a gift

Gifts can be split into multiple payments

Families can pledge their gifts for 1-5 years

More than one gift can be made

Families or individuals may choose to donate

anonymously

NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL! This campaign is about

achieving our goal TOGETHER at all levels of gifts

from $1 to $+10,000.

(Watch the film - click above)

Our Annual Campaign for The Scholarship Fund is about

what we can achieve when we all work together as a

community.

We hope that every family will make a contribution.

We hope that every teacher and staff member will

make a gift.

We hope that all our alumni families will join us and make a

donation.

Our goal is to have 100% of our families, faculty, staff and

alumni make a gift to The Scholarship Fund.

We hope to receive a range of gifts from 1 USD to

+10,000 USD and every gift will help us achieve our goal

together. Each family, each individual member of our

community can make a difference.

We can reach our first annual goal, If EVERY family made

a gift of 105 USD!

Imagine what we can achieve together! The Annual

Campaign is about a community sharing a vision and

everyone making their own contribution, at their own level,

to achieve that goal.

Only you can decide what is the right level gift for you.

We welcome gifts from companies and we will be

developing a special recognition package.

We will be actively seeking investment from companies as

we build our campaign over the next five years.

Please contact our Director of Advancement, Emma

Silva , if you would like to make a connection to The

Scholarship Fund for a corporate donation.

Page 7: UNIS Hanoi Tin Tuc _ Newsletter 17 vol 21 tt 12 dec

Our primary goal is to mobilize our own direct UNIS

Hanoi community.

However, we also accept gifts from those outside of our

School community who are inspired by the vision of our

Scholarship Programme and who want to contribute as a

Friend of the School.

We celebrate all gifts to The Scholarship Fund as

philanthropic acts of generosity.

A gentle reminder to NOT take UNIS Hanoi Library books

with you!

Our precious Library books travel enough going to and from our

UNIS Hanoi families’ homes.... they prefer to remain here in Hanoi .

Happy holidays!

Julie Conroy, ES Librarian [email protected]

We would like to send a big thank you to you all, UNIS

Hanoi students, parents and teachers for your generous

sponsoring of, and donations to, our Blue Dragon Walk-A-

Thon.

On November 6th, 2014, despite the drizzling weather, all

the students and teachers from Discovery to Grade 5 had

so much fun and participated with so much energy in our

Walk-A-Thon. We have raised 13,000 USD in order to

support the Blue Dragon organization in their work to help

Vietnamese street children to go to school.

Page 10: UNIS Hanoi Tin Tuc _ Newsletter 17 vol 21 tt 12 dec

With many amazing performances from K1- Grade 12 and

opportunities to support our Community Service Learning

programmes, the Festive Fundraiser ‘Stars and Light’ was a

fantastic celebration to start of this winter holiday season.

The change in organization allowed the community

performances to be enjoyed in a variety of locations. The

UMA Jazz band and Dr Barder provided the outside

entertainment as people enjoyed the twinkling lights and

visiting the various festive goods organized by MSHS

students to support their community action projects.

Popcorn, hot chocolate and sausage sizzle stalls satisfied

hungry stomachs. Kindergarten and Grade 1 opened the

evening with songs in the Centre for the Arts Foyer. The

performances continued with the ES, MS and APAC choirs

performing in the theatre followed by more instrumental

performances in the foyer to close the evening.

Your kind donations (VND 24,196,000) and money raised

from the popcorn and hot chocolate sales (VND

8,905,000) are used to purchase instruments to promote

music education in local Vietnamese Kindergarten schools.

Last year the school identified the 20/10 Kindergarten as

being the lucky recipient of the instruments. The ES

Beginner Band and Singers United Choirs visited the

school to interview teachers and conduct research into the

needs of the school. Having identified useful instruments,

these were purchased and delivered by these ES students

who also performed for the school. The Music teacher

from 20/10 has received professional development this year

in music education through spending time with our ECC

music teacher as part of the extended ECERP (Early

Childhood Educational Renovation Programme). Their

students have had fun learning and using these instruments

this year.

Students from the 20/10 Kindergarten attended our Festive

Fundraiser night and performed, "Chú ếch con", a song

loved by Vietnamese children of many generations. They

were proud to be a part of this wonderful night supporting

Vietnamese community.

Thank you to all the performers and people who made this

wonderful event possible and to your support for our

community projects.

Congratulations to the students for their sparkling

performances at this year’s Festive Fundraiser. In Music

lessons leading up to the event, the children were eager and

excited to perform. They worked diligently to learn all of

the songs and corresponding actions. In the performance,

they were confident and they performed beautifully. Thank

you to all of the students, teachers and parents for their

hard work and continued support of our Music programme.

On Monday December 8, as part of the ES Service

Learning programme, the ASA ‘Tet Bag Appeal’ group had

a fieldtrip to the Red River Area where the students met

with members of the Red River Community. This gave

them a great chance to enhance their understanding of

Service Learning. It was a very interesting trip for the

students and a good opportunity for the students to initiate

their own Service Learning Action towards the community.

The focus of ‘The Tet Bag Appeal’ is to provide families in

the Red River Community with a greater means to

celebrate Tet. Prior to the field trip, the students worked in

small groups to prepare questions and when they got there,

they interviewed some local people to find out what the

people want for their Tet celebration. The students

employed excellent communication and cooperation skills

when they asked the questions in English with some of the

students then translating these questions into Vietnamese.

Now that we have visited the Red River Community, the

students will start their ‘Tet Bag Appeal’ campaign to call

for the UNIS Hanoi community to donate to their “Tet

Bag Appeal” activity. Stay tuned for more updates and

information on how you can help.

With the weather getting cooler and

everyone dressing warmer we are starting

to see a lot of students coming to PE

lessons in incorrect uniform. As it states in

the elementary handbook, students are

required to wear a UNIS Hanoi-related

shirt and shorts to PE lessons. In winter,

students can also wear a UNIS Hanoi tracksuit top and

bottoms.

We are seeing a lot of jeans and woolen dresses which are

not only inappropriate for activity but also hold sweat and

are therefore unhygienic and can increase chances of being

sick when returning outside. Some students are also

wearing long sleeve tops underneath their PE shirt, which

has the same effect. As our lessons are in the climate-

controlled sports centre, students can wear alternative

warm clothing over the top of their PE uniform and then

remove it when they get to lessons.

Many thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Mr Mac and the PE team

The UNIS Hanoi Aquathlon

2015 will take place

on Saturday, February

28th and all are invited to

take part in this event! With

more than two months left to get ready, you and your

family have an exciting opportunity to share in some fun

and fitness together!

The Aquathlon preparation season has already started as

part of the ASA 2 winter session, and many of our fine

students have already begun to train for this unique

activity.

The sport of aquathlon consists of a continuous, two-stage

race involving swimming followed by running. Families,

students teams and individual participants are welcome to

take part, and to choose from different race categories –

Individual participants, Students Teams and Family Teams.

We offer a shorter, Junior, version of the race for younger

elementary students and their parents, as well as a more

challenging race for older students and their parents.

Information about the UNIS Hanoi Aquathlon 2015 can be

found HERE. Registration will begin straight after winter

break on January 5th and continue until the 150th

registrant.

This year every participant will receive a bag specially

designed for the event.

Thanks to the SCO's support and funding, new touchpads

for the pool were purchased and tried out last Saturday.

High School Varsity swimmers were the first ones to try

out new touchpads in action during their APAC

team tryouts. Many thanks to the SCO, Aquatics and

Operations teams, as well to parents for your generous

support!

Get a chance to train with the Real Madrid

Coaches from the world famous Real

Madrid Football Club, here at UNIS Hanoi

during our Real Madrid Football Clinic

Hanoi May 2015.

The Real Madrid coaches, who would be

assisted by a team of specially selected

assistant coaches, will be leading and conducting the 5 days

training clinic in Hanoi. The Real Madrid coaches are the

same coaches who work with their own Real Madrid youth

team in Spain. The coaching methods and training regime

will be based on the current programs in Real Madrid

current youth development program.

The clinic’s training is designed around the philosophies of

one of the world’s greatest football teams Real Madrid CF.

The youth training programme uses the same training

techniques that are taught at their famous 'La Fábrica' in

the Ciudad Real Madrid. Clinic participants will have the

unique opportunity of being coached and trained in

methods used by not only players like Cristiano Ronaldo,

Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Sergio Ramos, but many

of the world’s top football stars.

These are the very same training methods that Real Madrid

uses in their unsurpassed feat of the La Decima ! 10 times

champions of Europe!

And also as part of our social responsibility and

commitment to giving back to our local community, we will

be working together with UNIS Hanoi and Crowne Plaza

West Hotel to sponsor and offer the same opportunity to a

group of 20 to 30 disadvantaged Vietnamese children.

From Sunday the 16th of November to the 19th of

November, 3 students from our Operation Smile Service

Learning group - Tobias, Seung Yoo, and Nozima - went

on a Service trip to help out at the 2014 Operation Smile

International Mission in Vinh City, Nghe An Province,

Vietnam. It was an amazing experience. About 100 people,

from different parts of the world, volunteered to be in Vinh

to support children having surgery on cleft lips and cleft

palates. Having a cleft lip or palate is basically just being

born with a gap in either your lip or your palate, and

sometimes people are born with both a cleft lip and palate.

It was a great experience to get to support this mission, so

that we could see for ourselves what our Service group is

working to improve. It really worked as a motivational

factor to be able to see that the things we are doing actually

help people, and also to get to see how much it meant for

the people who received treatment for their cleft lips and

palates.

Of course, we could not perform any of the operations, but

we got to help out with organizational things such as:

helping the patients around the hospital, organizing their

surgery records, and also playing with the kids before their

operations. It was a lot of fun. We also got to meet a great

group of like-minded students who had also volunteered to

help, so it was easy to connect with them making the trip

even more memorable.

The trip was so much fun, and it is definitely something all

3 of us would recommend other students to participate in.

Seeing the kids who were going through something that

would change their life forever was amazing and we

wouldn't hesitate - given the chance - to do it all again.
