Mission:
The Unionville High School Music department is committed to the pursuit
of excellence in the delivery of a performance/experiential based program
that continues to play an important role in the school and community.
Vision:
The Unionville High School Music department focuses on the development
of the whole music student by exploring all musical concepts that will
ultimately enhance each student's understanding of the music they perform.
Values:
The two programs (UHS Core Music and Arts York/Unionville) are seen as
playing equal roles in the department's planning and development. The
unique combination of the two individual programs enables every music
student to experience all aspects of being a musician.
W elcome back!
We hope
your summer
was all that it
should be and that you are
rested, excited and ready for
another great year at UHS
Music. This edition of Mu-
sic Notes is part of our intro-
ductory messages given to
all music students at the
beginning of the year.
Music Notes is published at
all of our annual perform-
ances at Markham Theatre
and regularly throughout the
year to help communicate
our department activities
with all of our students and
parents. We invite everyone
to read the newsletter to take
note of the calendar of
events (page 2) and see what
exciting opportunities lie
ahead for all of our students.
As usual, the music teachers
have worked hard to prepare
a challenging year for all of
our classes and ensembles.
This year, however, has
included many extra steps.
Saying goodbye to Mr. Beck
last spring, as he retired
after 20 years of dedicated
teaching at UHS, in addition
to dealing with a few in-
stances of smaller class sizes
has resulted in some sched-
uling changes. The re-
hearsal schedule has
changed from last year. A
copy is included in this edi-
tion of music notes. Stu-
dents are asked to take note
of these changes.
The music staff has gone
through an exhaustive proc-
ess of defining what makes
UHS Music unique and de-
signing future programming
and class structures around
our strengths. As we con-
tinue to work with all of or
stakeholders in advocating
for our program and indeed
music education in general,
the resulting Mission, Vi-
sion and Values outlined
above are the driving forces
behind our development
over the next several years.
The few changes to student
schedules and class organi-
zation will not result in any
changes to our overall goals
and high standards.
It is important to us that all
of our students and parents
understand any changes that
seem to be taking place. To
this end, there will be a
presentation for all Arts
York/Unionville students on
the first day of school high-
lighting the positive devel-
opment of the program to
date. An example of these
developments is the forma-

UHS MUSIC CONCERT TICKETS
W ith over 400 students performing in dozens of large and small ensembles throughout our busy
performance season, it is important that participants and their families have access to ticket information.
Concert details will be published in future editions of ―Music Notes‖ and will be discussed with
participants well in advance.
Many of our festivals and competitions are open to the public and are free of charge. We encourage families
and friends to support our musicians at these important events throughout the year.
Our co-curricular repertoire ensemble program here at UHS Music provides our students with many
performance opportunities in several different venues. An important aspect of this program is having students
understand what it takes to produce these events. Ticket sales are an important part of any production. A large receptive
audience provides a much more realistic experience for our ensembles.
UHS Music is asking each participant to sell two tickets to each performance they are involved in. Promotion
of our concerts will increase as well and students are asked to do their part to ensure that there is a suitable audience.
Our award winning ensembles perform with a level of maturity well beyond their years and work hard towards
each concert. Please plan on supporting your student and her/his peers by attending as many of our concerts, festivals
and recitals as possible.
Ticket information and order forms for each ticketed performance will be distributed to students several weeks
in advance. Students simply return the completed order forms with payment to the UHS Music Box Office outside room
132. Students not requiring tickets for a concert will be asked to return an order form signed by their
parents/guardians. This helps the ensemble conductor know that parents are informed of coming events.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions regarding tickets for any concert throughout the year.
We look forward to seeing you at all of our performances.
Rehearsal Schedule 2011-2012
Here is the rehearsal schedule for the UHS Music Department’s co-curricular large ensembles. Rehearsals will start early in September and this
schedule will be followed with few exceptions until June 2012. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Please speak
with your conductor well in advance if there is a conflict with this schedule. Morning and evening rehearsals will be discussed with the ensemble
participants when necessary.

ALL grade nine students are invited to participate in UHS’s annual Grade Nine Music Retreat.
Participation includes:
large and small ensemble rehearsals with their UHS teachers and guest conductors;
master classes/clinics and concerts with senior students and professional musicians;
activities run by senior UHS Music students.
This provides all of our grade nine musicians with a great opportunity to get to know each
other while learning about performing on their instrument or voice.
Students will be departing UHS after school on October 11 and will return during period 5 on
October 13. A detailed information package will be distributed during the first week of class.
The Jackson’s Point Conference Centre is a wonderful facility located on the southern shores
of Lake Simcoe. It is a favourite retreat location for many area schools and businesses.
We look forward to working with our grade 9 students in this unique opportunity. Stay tuned
for more information!
MUSIC COUNCIL
AT UHS!
A very busy and
exciting year for
the UHS Music
Department has
just begun!
Ever wondered how you
can get more involved, meet
new people, and be a part
of fun events such as music
department bowling, pizza
parties and the planning
and organization of
countless UHS Music
events? Well, we’ve got the
answer!
The Music Council invites
all UHS Music students to
come out and get involved!
We encourage students
from grades 9-12 in every
discipline to come to our
weekly meetings every
Friday after school in room
219.
If you have any questions,
feel free to ask Jacqueline
Teh and Pamela Psarianos.
We are in the grade 12
vocal program and are
happy to answer your
questions. You can find us
in choir, wind ensemble,
around the music halls, and
in the library. Stay tuned to
the announcements and
listen up for details
regarding our first meeting!
EXCITING TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES
W e are currently in the process of getting Board approval for a trip to Banff,
Alberta in the spring of 2012. Tentative dates are from April 16 to 21, 2012.
We are hoping to participate in the well known Rocky Mountain Festival with
a Concert Band, String Orchestra and Choir. UHS Music has participated in
this festival two times over its 26 year history and it has been a highlight of our student
experiential learning initiatives. All members of our senior performing ensembles (Symphonic
Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir and Arts York String Orchestra) will be invited to
participate.
Once Board approval has been granted, eligible students will receive information
packages outlining the itinerary, performing opportunities, dates and costs. All information
notices will also be posted on the UHS Music Moodle as it becomes available.
Traveling and performing in various venues has always been an important part of our
mission. It is our hope that as many of our students as possible will take advantage of this
outstanding opportunity.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact the Music Department with any
questions or concerns.

JESSICA MUIRHEAD—Soprano (UHS, 1999)
S oprano Jessica
Muirhead was
born in England,
and immigrated to
Canada with her family at
the age of three. She grew
up north of Toronto, and
first discovered her love of
singing as a member of the
York Region Children’s
Chorus. She was accepted
into the Arts York
programme at Unionville
High School where she
majored in voice, and later
was accepted into the
Bachelor of Music degree
programme at McGill
University in Montreal,
where she majored in Voice
Performance. She
completed her Bachelors
degree in 2003 and was
accepted directly into a
Master of Music in Solo
Song also at McGill
University, which she
completed in 2005 in the
studio of Lucile Evans,
with whom she still studies.
Immediately following
completion of her studies,
Miss Muirhead achieved both
national and international
recognition as the Grand
Prize winner of the Elora
Festival Competition, and the
First Place winner of the
National Music Festival in
Canada, as well as finalist in
multiple international
competitions. She became a
member of the prestigious
Canadian Opera Company
Ensemble Studio, where she
debuted in a jump-in
performance as La Dama in
Verdi’s Macbeth, and was
offered her first professional
contracts in Europe. She
debuted as Pamina in a new
production of Die Zauberflöte
at the Vienna Volksoper and
was subsequently asked to
make other debuts in Austria
as Pamina in Graz, and as
Donna Anna in Don
Giovanni in a new production
at the Stadttheater
Klagenfurt.
In 2007 Miss Muirhead was
invited to return to Toronto as
Contessa Almaviva in Le
Nozze di Figaro at the
Canadian Opera Company,
and in 2008 in Don Giovanni
as Donna Anna to critical
acclaim. ―The most beautiful
singing of the evening comes
from Jessica Muirhead as
Donna Anna‖ (Christopher
Hoile, Eye Weekly). During
these years she was also
invited to return to the
Volksoper in Vienna
frequently, reprising the role
of Pamina, and adding
Micaëla in Carmen, Agathe
in Der Freischütz and
Antonia in a new production
Offenbach’s Les Contes
d’Hoffmann.
The 2008/2009 season
included an important house
and role debut
as Musetta in
La Boheme at
the Bayerische
Staatsoper, as
well as her
first Strauss
role as the
Fünfte Magd in Elektra. In
between opera performances
Miss Muirhead was busy
travelling the globe with
concert performances
including Berg’s Sieben
Frühe Lieder with the
Hamburg Symphony in
Sweden, Haydn’s Creation in
Switzerland, and Fauré’s
Requiem in Washington, D.C.
The beginning of the 2009/10
season marked the return of
UHS Music Alumni. Where are they now features a UHS alumnus every edition. If you know something special about a former
UHS Music student and their thriving career, please let us know.
Miss Muirhead to England to
debut as Alice in Verdi’s
Falstaff with Glyndebourne
on Tour. Later in the season
Miss Muirhead was invited
back to the Canadian Opera
Company to perform Micaëla
in Bizet’s Carmen where ―her
aria, fresh and clarion, was a
highlight‖ (Arthur Kaptainis,
National Post), after having
performed it live-to-air on the
radio with the Bayerische
Rundfunkorchester in
Munich.
Most recently Miss Muirhead
made her debut at the São
Carlos in Lisbon, and her
house and role debuts at the
Semperoper in Dresden as
Marguerite in Gounod’s
Faust. She has been invited
back to the Semperoper to
sing Mimì in La Bohème, a
role she debuted earlier in the
season at SNG Maribor,
Slovenia. Miss
Muirhead
continues to keep
an active concert
career and looks
forward to an
upcoming return
to the Cantabile
Chorale and Orchestra in
Montréal. Miss Muirhead is
grateful to the Jacqueline
Desmarais Foundation, and
also to the Canada Council
for the Arts for their support.
As a way to give back, and
also a strong supporter of
cancer research, Miss
Muirhead will be
participating in her 3rd annual
fundraiser concert this year in
Wisconsin where all proceeds
go towards Breast Cancer
Research.
―…One of the most promising lyric sopranos. Her lovely voice, with a
crystal clear, shimmering timbre, is smooth and even throughout its
range and backed by a solid technique and that intangible quality we
call musicality‖ (Joseph So, Opera Canada).
“I certainly wouldn't
be where I am right
now were it not for
Unionville”

What Did You Do This Summer?
UHS Music Students Perform in Provincial and National Ensembles.
J ust when most of us are setting up for a relaxing summer, several UHS Music students were setting the stage for
their appearances with honour performing ensembles. The Ontario Youth Choir is an annual event held every
August and is comprised of auditioned high school and university aged singers from across Ontario. This year,
grade 12 Arts York Vocal major Jacqueline The joined recent UHS graduates Aaron Qui and Jessica Wright in
the choir of over 40 singers. The choir was conducted by Iwan Edwards, professor of music at McGill University and
former conductor of the chorus of the Orchestra Symphonie du Montreal. The choir participated in a weeklong rehearsal
camp and concert tour including stops in , Orillia and Toronto at the CNE and University of Toronto.
Meanwhile, Grade 12 oboist, Hugo Lee, spent almost the entire summer with the National Youth Orchestra of
Canada. The orchestra was comprised of outstanding musicians between the ages of 16 to 26 from across Canada. 2011
was the 51st edition of this most well known orchestral training program. The month long rehearsal camp in residence
at the University of Western Ontario in London, ended with a performance tour including stops in London, Stratford,
Ottawa, Montreal, Wolfville NS, Kingston and Toronto.
Good luck to Arts Unionville Percussion majors Charis Choi and Justin Leung as they participate in the Ontario
Provincial Honour Band 2011 in November. Conductor Jack Stamp will be working with the ensemble in preparation
for their concerts in Newmarket and Huntsville at the Ontario Music educators’ Association conference.
Congratulations to all participants and thanks for representing UHS Music so well on the provincial and
national stage.
WELCOME BACK! Continued from page 1
tion of a professional learning
community at UHS Music.
Scheduling changes taking
effect in September 2011 en-
able all staff members to in-
teract with all classes. This
will be most evident in the
Arts York/Unionville Musi-
cianship classes, but will also
be a concept that will have a
positive influence in every
facet of the department. If you
have any questions or con-
cerns, please, as always, do
not hesitate to contact you
music teachers as partners in
this important undertaking.
T his is the very first
edition of Music
Notes available
online. As the de-
partment works towards using
less paper and explores ways
to better communicate with
our community, we will be
using a UHS Music Depart-
ment Moodle. The Moodle is
an online tool that has been
used by many teachers for
several years. The intention
behind the UHS Music
Moodle is to have one
Moodle page for the entire
department. This will sim-
plify things for our students
by being able to access all
class and department infor-
mation on one page instead
of having to log into 2, 3 or 4
different Moodles. Students
often have questions about
assignments or due dates and
parents are busy trying to
organize the family’s calen-
dar. What better way to keep
everyone informed than with
a single online resource? It
has been set up to include
general department informa-
tion that applies to all of our
students at the top of the
page. Students/parents can
then scroll down to find the
folder for individual classes
and ensembles for resources
and materials specific to that
class.
A one-page handout will be
distributed to all music stu-
dents and their parents out-
lining how to use the UHS
Music Moodle. Parents will
be asked to review several
documents with their child
before signing and returning
it to their teacher. This as-
sures that all students and
parents are aware of where to
go for information through-
out the year.
Again, welcome back. Your
music teachers are excited to
start the year.

Two Reflections from UHS’s Ontario Educational Leadership
Camp (OELC) Participants.
Every year, the UHS Music Department nominates student leaders to participate in the Ontario Educational Leadership Camp at the
very end of June. These students then return to apply the leadership skills they acquired as they lead by example in our Music Stu-
dents’ Council and performing ensembles . Thanks to the UHS Administration, and the Music Department for supporting this
year’s participants.
M y first day of OELC was the beginning of an adventure, an adventure of music and friendship
that taught me valuable skills, and provided me with memorable experiences. Throughout the
course of the week, I gained a new respect for my fellow ?leaders? (as we campers were called)
allowing them to trust me and be trusted. Building on a foundation of trust and acceptance, my
fellow leaders and I strived to accomplish increasingly challenging and fun activities. These activities however
were not only fun and exciting, they each had real-life lessons and applications. And by discussing as a group
our successes and failures, I learned a great deal about leadership.
In our leadership sessions, I learned how to communicate more effectively, surmount group challenges, take
on various roles in a group, and create a positive environment. I believe that the knowledge I was taught that
week will be useful for the rest of my life including in the near future, school. As a result of what I
have experienced, I believe that I am more open to new ideas, more accepting of different people, more confi-
dent in myself and others, and a better leader. Having started out as a mysterious acronym, OELC now in-
vokes powerful memories that will remain with me forever. I am really honoured to have been chosen by Ms.
Uch and the rest of the music department to represent UHS at OELC and I plan to use all the knowledge that I
learned to help our program thrive. Now I will strive to make a difference, accept risks and embrace the
unknown and hopefully, I’ll continue to live above the line.
Sincerely, Remi Marchand
Why do we teach music?
Not because we expect you to major in music. Not because we expect you to play and sing all your life. Not so you can relax. But so you will be human. So you will recognize beauty. So you will be sensitive. So you will have something to cling to. So you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good, more
life. Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless you know how to live?
