InordertomeetstricterdiesellocomotiveemissionsstandardsimposedbyEPATierIIregulations,EMDmodifiedtheSD-70MACtocreatetheSD70ACeandSD70M-2.Eachmodelispoweredbya16-cylinder,4300-horsepowerdieselengine.OntheSD70M-2,theprimemoverdrivesanalternatorandpro-ducesACcurrentthatisrectifiedtoDCcurrent,whichpowersthetractionmotors.OntheSD70ACe,theDCcurrentisthen“chopped”backintoACtopowerthetractionmotors.
MuchoftheexternaldesignisbasedontheSD90seriesloco-motives.Similarfeaturesincludethefullheightnosedoorandrectangularwindshields,thelargeflaredradiatorswithtwofans,andthepositioningofthedynamicbrakeequipmentattherearofthelonghood.Inaddition,theinvertersweremovedfromin-sidethelonghoodtoaboxonthewalkwaybehindthefireman’ssideofthecab.
