Inflation Rises For First Time R In Six Months INCREASES in the price of food and clothing pushed inflation in Britain to 3.5 percent in March, the first increase in the annual rate in six months, official figures showed last month. The Office for National Statistics said the rate was up from February’s 3.4 percent – still far above the Bank of Eng- land’s official target of two percent. Analysts, however, said the inflation rate, which had been falling steadily from a peak of 5.2 percent in September, is likely to soon resume its decline. “This should be only temporary,” said Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist at Capital Economics. A recent drop in oil prices should push inflation down in coming months, she said. Energy costs were in fact the main downward pressure on inflation in March, the statistics agency said. An inquest being held into his death will investigate whether Williams could possibly have climbed inside the sports bag and locked it from the inside. Boxer With Divine Right (Hook) Breaks Record

FATHER Dave Smith set a new world record, last month, for the most continuous boxing rounds.

The Anglican priest, 50, took on all com-ers to complete 120 three-minute rounds – which saw him boxing for over six hours.

The gruelling challenge saw the Australian face 66 opponents and raise $10,000 for the local youth centre at the Holy Trinity Church in Dulwich Hill, Sydney.

The drop-in centre brings together young people from the community and rehabilitates those with drug and alcohol issues through boxing.Emergency Action Saw Police

Free … Toy Dog From CarFOLLOWING an alert that a dog was locked in a car, and fearing it was overheating, two police officers jumped into action to save the animal last month.

Unfortunately, after the pair broke a window of the vehicle, the “sleeping” dog turned out to be a cuddly toy.

When the PCs couldn’t rouse the animal by banging on the window, they smashed their way into the Mercedes coupe fearing it would be harmed in the 18C temperatures. It was only when they reached inside to rescue the pooch that they realised it was merely a stuffed cuddly toy worth £4.50.

Owner Gordon Williams, 80, has now told how he returned to his car to find the back-seat covered in broken glass and an official note, reading: “Smashed your window re concern for animal on rear seat.”

The police force has agreed to pay to the damage to allow the retired mining engineer to replace his window. Williams, from Mans-field, Nottinghamshire, told The Sun: “I guess they felt like idiots.”

Nottinghamshire Police said: “The call was made in good faith by a passer-by.Fitness Competition For Fat Cats And Dogs Shaping Up

AT LEAST 18 fat cats in the UK were getting help with their weight problem last month.

A pef fit competiton, Pet Fit Club, run by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) advocates that the overweight ani-mals in Britain should get in shape.

Specialist vets are guiding the owners of each of these supersized pets on their jour-ney to good health by providing a balanced diet and tailored exercise plan.

The contestants – 11 dogs, five cats and

two rabbits – are carrying a combined excess weight of more than 24 stone – the equivalent of 380 tins of dog food, 35 average-sized cats or 50 Yorkshire Terriers.

All of the finalists fall into the category of obese or morbidly obese and desperately need to lose weight to improve their qual-ity of life.

Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, said: “Excess pounds can contrib-ute to a number of serious health conditions and, sadly, it does reduce life expectancy.

Lego Bricks Provide Real ‘Model Home’ For Hermit CrabBRITAIN’S most unusual aquarium is now the home from home for a Hermit Crab – the crustacean has moved into a shell made of Lego bricks.

Harry the crab lives in the Discovery Area of the Atlantis Submarine Voyage attraction at the Legoland Windsor resort.

He immediately stands out from the crowd with his custom-made red, yellow and blue shell made of Lego bricks.

Senior Aquarist, Liane Riley explained: “Hermit crabs have soft bodies which need protecting, but they don’t have their own shells.

“They solve this problem by salvaging for empty sea shells and literally moving in but we decided to give Harry a wider choice and the model makers here created a special Lego house just for him.

“We weren’t really sure if he’d actually move in, but he rejected the sea and snail shells on offer and seems very comfortable in his new home.”

Pole Dancer Wows The Ladies With His Skills

PAUL BRADLEY saw the light when it came to exercise after he decided to join a profes-sion that he always enjoyed watching.

Paul Bradley, a happily-married father-of-two has found a clever way to watch pole dancers without getting into trouble – by becoming one.

Bradley, 53, has made many of new friends through his hobby, and not just beautiful, tall women.

The IT worker, from West Wellow, Hants, spends hours in the dance studio working up a sweat with his super-fit classmates.

Bradley said it’s probably the best work-out he’s ever had. He added: “I get so much stick over being a male pole dancer but I absolutely love it – let’s just say, there are loads of benefits.

“A female friend of mine got into it. She knew how I like to stay fit and promised me I would be impressed with the workout. It is a great way to keep fit and I can honestly say it’s one of the toughest workouts I ever done.”

After installing an eight-foot pole in his garage Bradley and his friends practice regularly. The former rugby player and competitive weightlifter says pole fitness routines have boosted his strength and stamina so much he can outstrip men half his age for fitness.

London Second Best To Paris For Student Life

A STUDY showed last month that Paris is the top city for being a student, pushing London into second spot.

The ranking of 50 global cities was carried out by QS Best Student Cities.

Beaten into second place by Paris in a ranking of 50 global cities, London was celebrated for its quality of life and afford-ability, with the cities in the poll dictated by criteria stipulating that they have a population of 250,000 or above, and are home to a minimum of two top ranking universities.

The research initially considered just short of 500 cities, brought this down to a shortlist of 100 and are publishing the top 50.

Dublin listed 9th, Manchester 35th, Bir-mingham 47th, and Glasgow in 50th spot.

Queen Song Goes Viral For Drunken Canadian

ROBERT WILLIAMS has gained world inter-net fame due to his arrest after a drunken night out.

Williams was filmed in the back of a police car pleading his case with the arrest-ing officers.

The inebriated man then broke into a full version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody on his way to the police station.

The video had notched up an amazing 6.4 million hits in just a few days on YouTube.

Williams was arrested in Alberta, pleading his innocence to Mounties.

Failing to receive a response from the officers, the 29-year-old sings the song’s opening line: “Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality.”

Despite clearly having had too much to drink, Williams goes on to recite the whole song from start to finish in just under the five minutes and 55 seconds of the original.

Even the attending police officers ap-pear entertained, waiting for him to finish his masterpiece outside the station before bringing him in.On the net:

Jesus The Hamster Comes Back From The ‘Dead’

IT WAS a sad day when Dave Eyley, 49, found the family pet hamster dead in his cage.

But, respectfully, Rhino the hamster, was given a dignified burial in the garden.E

Then, to Eyley’s surprise he got a cell-phone call from his next door neighbour the following day who spotted Rhino running around his garden, saying: “Your hamster has escaped and I’ve just caught him.”

Eyley, wife Wendy, 47, daughter Bay-ley, 23, and twins Jake and Emma, 20, were flabbergasted to discover their pet: 1 Wasn’t dead, and, 2 Had dug his way out of his grave.

Eyley told his neighbour it was “impossible” and how he had buried the “dead” animal the previous day. Of course, when he got home he found that Rhino, had, in fact risen.

Oxfordshire resident Eyley added: “He had rigor mortis when I buried him – and now he’s running about. We’re stunned – but happy to have him back.”

The family re-christened the Hamster Jesus, since the happy event happened around Easter time.

Miniature Railway Accident Brought 999 Response

TRAIN ENTHUSIASTS were enjoying a pleas-ant afternoon riding the miniature railway at Canvey Island in Essex last month, when they were shocked to see two ambulance crews and a police car respond to a minor accident reported the Daily Telegraph.

The mix up came after emergency services call handlers misheard a 999 call requesting help after a “miniature train ac-cident” as a “military train accident”.

Organisers had in fact called the emer-gency services as a precaution after three passengers suffered minor injuries after falling from the model train.

Mike Leahey, chairman of the Canvey Railway and Model Engineering, said: “No one could understand why there was so much fuss for such a minor event.

“We called for an ambulance, but they must have misheard what we said. It was just a big misunderstanding.

“The emergency crews said they thought they had been called to a military railway, which is why there was such a big re-sponse.

Blind Author ‘Wrote’ Blank Pages With Empty Pen

TRISH VICKERS didn’t realise her pen had run out of ink by the time she finished the first 26 pages of her book. She didn’t realise most of the pages were blank because she is blind.

Fortunately police forensics helped the devastated Vickers to recreate her words last month, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Vickers, 59, lost her sight seven years ago through diabetes and decided to write a novel to keep her mind active. The excited author couldn’t wait for her son Simon to visit so he could read her opening chapters back to her. But when he arrived he had to tell her the pages were blank.

Incredibly, however, the manuscript was recovered after the family took it to their local police HQ and asked for help.

Forensic experts worked in their spare time to read the indentations left on the A4 pages using a system of lights. It took five months of painstaking work, but the charitable forensic team was able to recover the whole text – and they said how much they had enjoyed it and couldn’t wait for the rest.

Vickers, from Charmouth, near Lyme

Regis, Dorset, now intends to complete the novel, called Grannifer’s Legacy. She said: “We battled with various ideas until we thought of the police. We rang them and asked to speak to their fingerprint section.

“They said if there was anything they could do they’d be happy to help. I was gobsmacked. I am so happy, pleased and grateful.”

Licking ‘Takes The Biscuit’ In Lift Exhibit

THIS ONE takes some licking, literally. The doors have opened on the first ever

lickable lift that targets the taste buds of city workers.

McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes took inspiration from Willy Wonka, Heston Blumenthal and Damien Hirst to create a Spot of Jaffa – an edible elevator artwork comprising 1,325 lick-able Jaffa Cakes – for our American readers, a lift is an elevator, and Jaffa cakes are biscuits, got it?

Food technicians and artists took four weeks to develop the edible elevator which is being trialled at Engine on London’s Great Portland Street.

Philippa Tilley, senior brand manager from McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes, comments: “We are all about bringing a bit more fun to life and this was the perfect way to get a little joy straight to stressed out office workers.

“We hope the lifts raise a smile, give people a taste for Jaffa Cakes and encour-ages them to go and buy a pack for the office.”

A quick FYI, each biscuit is removed afer a single licking.

Comedian Along With Room Service In Edinburgh

A COCKTAIL, a sandwich, or even a meal – all very common room service requests in a hotel.

But, last month a hotel in Edinburgh broke new ground by offering an award-winning Scottish comedian on the menu.

Guests of the new Hotel Indigo were able to order a 10 minute show from Janey Godley along with their food and drink last month.

Janey said: “I’ve done comedy acts in lots of different places but being part of a room service menu is a first for me. I love that people at Hotel Indigo Edinburgh can ring up to order their room service and

then the next moment, I’ll be in their room telling jokes and doing my act.”

The hotel came up with the idea to celebrate its opening and to signal its close location to the city’s Stand Comedy Club.

Dominic Kutschera, general manager of the hotel said: “Edinburgh plays host to the world’s largest arts festival every summer and as a result Edinburgh has become synonymous with comedy. The festival theme is reflected throughout our hotel and we thought it would be fun to take this a step further by putting comedy quite literally on the menu.”

List Of ‘Silly’ Items Brits Pack

For The HolsA RECENT survey listed some of the top silly items Brits take on their holidays.

One of the top products that makes the suitcase is Marmite, according to the British Airways survey.

Other popular “must haves” are: Potato peelers, sardines and kettles, all among the silly things that Brits pack when they take off away from home.

The carrier found that other regularly packed home comforts included peanut butter and tomatoes.

Perhaps unsurprisingly – considering these strange packing habits – and, ironi-cally nine out of 10 holidaymakers admit-ted that they don’t use about 30 percent of the items they take on holiday.

For example, almost half of those surveyed revealed that they take more than three pairs of shoes away with them for a week-long break. Perhaps even weirder, one in eight people insist on cramming more than three towels into their suitcase.

Abigail Comber, British Airways’ head of brands and marketing, said: “We don’t really want to have to choose between books, toiletries or tea-bags ... just to avoid excess baggage fees.

“[But] something as basic as checking what your baggage limit is on your chosen airline will help. We know from the research that 23 percent of people don’t look into it before they get to the airport.”

‘Love Thy Neighbour’ Says The Queen

THE QUEEN has called on everyone in Britain to be a good neighbour to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.

In an historic speech to Parliament she also hailed the national qualities of “resilience, ingenuity and tolerance” and paid a moving tribute to Prince Philip.

In a ceremony at Westminster Hall, the Queen said: “It is my sincere hope that the Diamond Jubilee will be an opportunity for people to come together in the spirit of neighbourliness and celebration of their own communities.”

She received a standing ovation after telling MPs and peers of the importance of her family, but most significantly of the Duke of Edinburgh “During these years as your Queen, the support of my family has, across the generations, been beyond measure. Prince Philip is, I believe, well known for declining compliments of any kind

“But throughout he has been a constant strength and guide. He and I are very proud and grateful that the Prince of Wales and other members of our family are travelling on my behalf in this Diamond Jubilee year to visit all the Commonwealth realms and a number of other Commonwealth countries.”

DIANA’S HOME REOPENSA £12m re-vamp of Kensington Palace

– home of Princess Diana and the future residence of William and Kate, was unveiled with the aim of introducing visitors to a dif-ferent cast of characters.

The curator, Deirdre Murphy, said “Diana, Princess of Wales, has been a key figure here since the early ‘80s. We are keen to balance that interest with other important characters who grew up and lived here.”

Included in the transformation of the state apartments is a permanent display dedicated to Queen Victoria, who was born in the palace and first opened it to the public. Her childhood doll’s house, wedding dress and black clothes worn in mourning for her beloved husband, Prince Albert, are among the treasures on display.

QUEEN GETS OYSTER CARDThe Queen has begun her Diamond Jubilee

tour of London and she has been given the option of travelling by tube when she received her own Oyster Card.

Mayor Boris Johnson presented her with a souvenir edition of the travel smartcard when he visited Buckingham Palace to convey the “gratitude” of London for her 60-year reign.

QUESTIONS RAISED BY PRINCESS’S SPEECH

A Biographers’ Club gathering at the Savile Club in Mayfair on the subject of royal biography was almost hijacked by Princess Michael of Kent. The distinguished panellists, Philip Ziegler, Sarah Bradford and Robert

Lacey – were warned beforehand that the discussion had to finish at 8pm because HRH had a dinner date.

During the discussion, when Sarah Brad-ford, biographer of George VI, was asked her opinion of the film The King’s Speech and pronounced it “excellent” and “accurate”, Princess Michael said “The whole family disagrees with that” and added “I didn’t see it. None of us wanted to.

The most important man in the king’s life, she said, was close friend Dr Louis Greif rath-er than the voice coach Lionel Logue. “Logue was important,” she conceded, “my husband was taught to speak by him. But Greig lived in the room next door all his life.”

Later, there was an intriguing exchange. “To go back to The King’s Speech,” said Bradford. “When I wrote my book, the Queen Mother put a veto on that episode.” Princess Michael said “I know why”. A member of the audience asked “And? You can’t let it go like that.” Princess Michael: “Oh yes I can.”

EXTENSION GO-AHEAD FOR “MIDDLETON MANOR”

The Duchess of Cambridge’s parents have been given permission to extend their £1.5m country house.

Carole and Michael Middleton have won planning consent for an annexe at their five-bedroom home – nicknamed “Middle-ton Manor” in the village of Bucklebury, Berkshire. The scheme was approved in spite of an objection from the local Parish Council, which claimed that it constituted overdevelopment. The couple have been told that they can start building once almost £2,000 is paid in additional fees to offset the impact of the annexe. The single-storey extension will include a replacement garage and home office.

Neighbours in the village claimed that the Middletons received special treatment by “hiding” the plans from public view. Those who wanted to view the proposal in person at West Berkshire Council offices had to submit a written request and gain “acceptance” of their ID. Normally, any member of the public

can view planning applications on council websites or in person at council offices.

KING OF CLUBSLast month, another private members’

club opened in the capital: Apartment 58. Its credentials were good – Alan Grant of the Notting Hill Arts Club was behind it. It was aimed at fashion industry types and had an intriguingly hi-tech “friendship” card – which means that when members swipe themselves in at the front door, their favourite cocktail or coffee will be ready by the time they reach the bar. Sounds snazzy, right? But don’t think for a second that this club is an exception. Across London, high-spec private members’ clubs are cropping up at an unstoppable rate.

Robin Birley is set to open 5 Hertford Street, a new Soho House is on its way in Mayfair, and then there’s The Arts Club, The Brompton Club, The Ivy Club, The Cobden Club, Home House, Beaufort House, Soho House, Shoreditch House, High Road House, Electric House, The Hospital Club, The Grou-cho, The Garrick, Blacks and Annabel’s.

It reminds me of the quote by Groucho Marx who declared:” I wouldn’t belong to any club which would have me as a member!”

COULD YOU HAVE THE ME FACTOR?

The new five-star flagship ME London Hotel is using talent contests to fill 300 roles. Ahead of its official opening in September, the hotel is looking for culinary superstars through a ME.N.U “Masterchef” challenge, as well as holding an X Factor-style talent con-test to find a team of front-of-house staff.

It is a novel way of finding a top team for this design-led contemporary hotel on the Strand. Entries are via Facebook – at facebook.com/ME.London.Hotel – and for the chef competition, contestants are asked to upload a video of themselves, explaining their passion for food.

“ME London looks to offer superlative guest experience from day one,” says Fabio Gallo, general manager of ME London. “That is why, in order to attract the most talented and enthusiastic hospitality workers, the hotel has announced this series of recruitment initiatives.”

The contemporary hotel will offer a luxe collection of 157 rooms and suites and an uber-luxurious two-floor Suite ME in the turret of the building, which opens onto the roof terrace.

ME London will open its doors in July, in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The location, overlooking Somerset House, on the doorstep of theatreland, Covent Garden, the West End and the Southbank, will ensure the ME London will attract both tourists and business travellers and will be one of the places to party for the fashionable, design-conscious set during important events in London.

WE WON’T FACE THE MUSICOrganisers of the London Olympics and

the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations have been accused of trying to rip off professional musi-cians by asking them to work unpaid.

The Musicians’ Union said it had been

contacted by many concerned members who had received requests. It has issued a notice urging performers not to accept such offers, saying it was wrong to expect them to work for no pay while staff such as security and stage crews receive their usual fees.

The Union’s Assistant General Secretary, Horace Trubridge, said it was talking to Olympic organising committee LOCOG, about the members’ reports. He said: “There seems to be a culture at LOCOG and around people organising the Jubilee that they don’t need to pay the musicians because it’s ‘great exposure’.

“That is completely unacceptable. Profes-sional musicians should always be offered a fee for their work.”

LOCOG said it stood by its commitment to the MU that it would not pay volunteers or headline acts but all other professional musicians will be paid.

Finally, politicians are like nappies. They need to be changed often, and pretty much for the same reasons!

DID ‘NUDE’ SCENE EMBARRASS KATE?

ACTRESS Kate Winslet, 36, was escorted on the red carpet by director James Cameron at the recent London film premiere of Cameron’s 3-D version of Titanic. His original Titanic of the sinking ocean liner was among the top box-office grossing movies of all time.

The 100th anniversary of the doomed liner during its maiden voyage from South-hampton to New York in April 1912, brought Cameron to London to screen his new film at the premiere.

Winslet costarred with Leonardo DiCaprio, 37, and she had done a nude scene in the film. On the red carpet she joked she would rather turn away than see herself nude in 3-D. She missed seeing that scene before it was screened by going to the theatre’s bar.

Former Royal Ballet dancers Michael Nunn and William Trevitt will travel to the US to form their own ballet company in the states. They will visit Washington DC, Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, to seek and train 24 dancers

from which 12 will be chosen to form the company, with the Lythgoe’s producing.

* * *IRONS JOINS CAST OF

‘BEAUTIFUL CREATURES’POPULAR ACTOR Jeremy Irons, 63, is be-ing kept busy. He stars in the Showtime TV drama The Borgias, and will be seen in CBS Films drama The Words.

At time of this writing, he also was in final negotiations to join the cast of Alcon’s Beauti-ful Creatures, with Brits Jack O’Connell, Alice Englert and Emma Thompson, along with costars Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum and Thomas Mann.

Irons role is that of a reclusive and mys-terious uncle in the supernatural love story, with Richard La Gravenese directing, from the book of the same name, along with his adaptation.

Filming began last month (April) in New Orleans.

* * *CATHERINE’S SECRET

LEGENDARY FRENCH film star Catherine Deneuve, 67, was honoured by the Film Society of Lincoln Center with their 39th Chaplin Award, last month, in New York City. Her daughter Chiara Mastroianni and actress Glenn Close and Martin Scorsese were among those on hand.

“I would trade anything to be like her 20 years from now,” said one admiring guest. Looking younger than her years, she shared her secret. “I try to do things my way. What I think is good for me, what I think is right for me. I try to have a little discipline about sleep. But I’m not strict. I’m very French.”

Verdict On British Olympic Doping Due THE COURT of Arbitration for Sport will announce this month whether Britain can keep enforcing a lifetime Olympic bans for doping cheats.

Sport’s highest court says an exact date to publish its verdict in a case pitting the British Olympic Association against the World Anti-Doping Agency will be an-nounced later.

A CAS panel of three lawyers has weighed its decision since a March 12 hearing in London.

WADA argues that Britain is violating anti-doping rules by seeking to enforce lifetime Olympic bans for athletes who have served a doping suspension.

British Olympic officials maintain that the doping bylaw is an eligibility issue upholding the integrity of the games.

The same CAS panel overturned a similar IOC rule last year.

Good Weather, Fuel Panic RDrive UK Retail Surge

Continued from page 1during the month.

However, sales excluding fuel were also strong, rising 1.5 percent.

In late March, the government triggered panic over car fuel late by urging motor-ists to fill up to guard against a possible strike by tanker drivers over the four-day Easter holiday. On March 28, one minister advised people to keep extra supplies on hand at home in 20-liter (about 5 US gal-lons) cans.

Drivers promptly lined up at service stations and drained them dry – although in the end there was no strike.

The fuel stockpiling of March is ex-pected to mean less fuel will be sold in April. On a broader level, analysts remain cautious about whether consumer spending can remain robust.

Subbe told the inquest that she did not believe her brother would let a potential killer into his flat, saying he was extremely careful.

Policeman John Gallagher told the in-quest how he made the grim discovery of William’s body when he went to the man’s apartment to check on the missing spy. When he entered the bathroom, he noticed a bulging North Face sports bag in the tub with the zippers padlocked together.

Report To Government Backs Fracking

London, Northern Ireland Police In Racism Inquiry

Hackers Claim Attack On UK Home Office Website

UK Sentences Ex-Head Of Nigerian State To 13 Years

Protesters scaled the Blackpool tower to hang banners protesting the controversial operation of Fracking.

POLICE CHIEFS in London and North-ern Ireland said last month they had suspended officers from duty following a raft of new investigations into alleged racism, including some cases reported by police staff to their superiors.

London’s Metropolitan Police, Brit-ain’s largest police force, said it was dealing with 10 new race-related com-plaints involving 20 staff, among them an allegation that an officer used a racial

slur while arresting a black man in the af-termath of England’s riots last August.

Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey said a total of eight officers have been suspended while the cases are investi-gated by the country’s police standards watchdog.

In Northern Ireland, four police of-ficers were suspended from duty after the discovery of racist and sectarian text messages.

By Robert BarrEXPLORATORY work to extract gas by hydraulic fracturing in England should be allowed to resume even though the technique has caused earth tremors, a report commissioned by the government said last month.

Cuadrilla Resources is using the technique, commonly called fracking, at a prospecting site in northwestern England.

The consultants’ report, which re-viewed earlier reports by the company, recommends that fracking should be halted temporarily if there is a tremor greater than magnitude 0.5 on the Richter scale. Cuadrilla has said that is acceptable.

On April 1 and May 27 last year, tremors of magnitudes 2.3 and 1.5 caused alarm in northwestern England but didn’t cause structural damage. Cua-drilla’s work was halted after the second tremor was linked to fracking.

CONSULTATIONThe government will announce its

decision following a six-week consulta-tion period.

“If shale gas is to be part of the UK’s energy mix we need to have a good understanding of its potential environ-mental impacts and what can be done to mitigate those impacts,” said David MacKay, chief scientific adviser at the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

“This comprehensive independent review of Cuadrilla’s evidence suggests a set of robust measures to make sure future seismic risks are minimized, not just at this location but at any other

potential sites across the UK,” Mac-Kay said.

Hydraulic fracturing involves pump-ing water, sand and chemicals under pressure into wells to open cracks which release gas. Cuadrilla has reported 50 fracking-induced tremors at its drilling site, including the two that were felt by people living nearby and several 0.5 magnitude events.

Cuadrilla estimates that the Bowland Basin prospect site in Lancashire con-tains as much as 200 trillion cubic feet of gas. Even a fraction of that represents a significant energy resource.

CONCLUSION“We are pleased that the experts

have come to a clear conclusion that it is safe to allow us to resume hydraulic fracturing, following the procedures outlined in the review,” Mark Miller, chief executive of Cuadrilla.

Andy Atkins, executive director of Friends of the Earth, said the envi-ronmental group’s concerns include potential air and water pollution as well as tremors.

“There should be a full scientific assessment of all the impacts of frack-ing,” Atkins said. “A short consultation on one of the problems is completely inadequate.”

In the United states, shale gas re-leased by fracking has risen from eight percent of total natural gas output in 2007 to nearly 30 percent in last year, according to the Energy Information Administration. Consumers have ben-efited, through lower home-heating and electric bills, but fracking still faces strong opposition.

A FORMER governor of Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta state was sentenced in Britain last month to 13 years in prison for fraud and money-laundering.

James Ibori had admitted in February to fraud and money-laundering involving sums of approximately £50m. He was ac-cused of stealing $250m from the public purse and funneling much of the stolen funds to banks in England to fund a lavish lifestyle of private jets and luxury cars.

Prosecutors and police have said Ibori used the money to buy houses in London and Johannesburg, a fleet of armored Land Rovers, and a $20m private jet. He racked up credit card bills of $200,000 a month.

Nigeria’s anti-graft investigators, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commis-sion, had arrested Ibori in 2007, and police in London got a court order to freeze UK assets of £35m which allegedly belonged to him.

RESERVEDThe case was reopened in 2010 by

Nigerian investigators, but Ibori evaded arrest and fled to Dubai. He was detained there at the request of British police and

extradited to London in 2011.Ibori – who prosecutors said is 49 years

old, but according to the birth date he used in Nigeria is 53 – was charged in Britain with a string of offenses. He had pleaded guilty in February to seven counts of money laundering and one count each of conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to make false instruments and obtaining a property transfer by deception.

Britain’s International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell said Ibori’s sentence “sends a strong and important

message to those who seek to use Britain as a refuge for their crimes.”

British prosecutors had previously won convictions against Ibori’s wife, Theresa; his sister, Christine Ibori-Ibie; his mistress, Udoamaka Oniugbo; his lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil; a financial agent, Daniel Benedict McCann; and corporate financier Lamber-tus De Boer.

BRITAIN’S Home Office confirmed last month that its website was attacked over-night after hackers claimed responsibility for shutting it down.

The hackers also claim they attacked the Justice Ministry website and warned of further attacks every Saturday on UK government websites.

The alleged hackers – who claim ties to Anonymous, the hacker collective – said on Twitter they launched last month’s denial-of-service attacks and brought down the websites to protest “proposed draconian surveillance measures,” Brit-ain’s extradition policies and “derogation of civil liberties.”

Denial-of-service attacks – which flood websites with too much traffic – are rela-

tively easy to pull off and generally do no lasting damage.

Britain’s Home Office said that its web-site “was the subject of an online protest” but noted that no sensitive information was held on it.

“There is no indication that the site was hacked and other Home Office systems were not affected,” the Home Office said in a statement. “Measures put in place to protect the website meant that members of the public were unable to access the site intermittently.”

It added that it will be monitoring the situation closely.

The Home Office and Justice Minis-try websites were both now operating normally.

Ian Paisley Back From Illness, Resumes Writing

REV IAN PAISLEY, Northern Ireland’s most famous Protestant figure, has re-turned to work after a serious illness and resumed his newspaper column on his 86th birthday.

Paisley, who won praise for leading Protestants into power-sharing with Catho-lics after decades of opposing compromise, was hospitalized in February with unspeci-fied heart problems and spent three weeks in intensive care.

A column last month in the Belfast News Letter represented his first public words since his recovery.

Paisley has thanked the Northern Ire-land public for praying for him, and called on families to come together for prayer on Easter Sunday.

He wrote that hearing his children and grandchildren saying the Lord’s Prayer together “is sweeter than any chocolate Easter egg.”

England Bans Big Stores From Displaying CigarettesMINISTERS say a ban on displaying packs of cigarettes inside supermar-kets and other large stores will send a message that smoking is no longer acceptable.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said last month – as the restrictions came into force – that the ban would show that Britons “no longer see smoking as a part of life.”

The ban applies only in England and will be extended to smaller stores by 2015. It means cigarettes must be hidden behind screens, or under shop counters.

England is following the lead of Iceland, Ireland, and Canada, all of which previously introduced similar measures.

A ban on smoking indoors in public places, such as pubs, was introduced in Scotland in 2006 and in England in 2007.

Murdoch Inquiry . . .Continued from page 1

ter David Cameron following the scandal’s resurgence in July. Murdoch’s testimony was among the most heavily anticipated – not least because of his close links to generations of British politicians, both from Cameron’s Conservatives and the opposition Labour Party.

Murdoch made few concessions to his inquisitor.

He did reveal a tense telephone ex-change with Brown in September 2009, after the tycoon had decided to throw The Sun’s support behind rival Cameron.

“Well, your company has declared war on my government and we have no alterna-tive but to make war on your company,” Murdoch quoted Brown as saying, adding he did not think that the prime minister “was in a very balanced state of mind.”

Brown later released a statement charac-terizing Murdoch’s version as false.

Don’t Enter The Plea Unless You Know What The Consequences AreIN MARCH 2010, the US Supreme Court made a landmark decision in Padilla v Ken-tucky requiring defense attorneys to provide affirmative advice to noncitizen clients regarding the immigration consequences of guilty pleas.

Padilla involved a US veteran of Vietnam and permanent resident of the US for forty years who faced deportation after pleading guilty to transportation of a large amount of marijuana. In a post-conviction proceeding, Mr Padilla sought to vacate his plea claiming that his attorney not only failed to advise him of immigration consequences prior to his plea but also told him that he did not have to worry about immigration consequences because he had been in the country for so long. In reality, Mr Padilla’s drug related offense was an aggravated felony, making his deportation essentially inevitable.

In reaching its decision, the Court ac-knowledged that deportation is a vital part of a noncitizens penalty and may be more important to such individuals than any jail sentence that could be imposed. Accordingly, failure to provide active advice on immigration consequences now constitutes ineffective assistance of counsel under the Sixth Amend-ment of the US Constitution.

UNCERTAINThe type of advice an attorney is required

to give depends on whether the immigra-tion consequences of a particular plea is clear or unclear. When the immigration consequences are unclear or uncertain, a defense attorney has no duty to do more than advise a noncitizen client that pending charges may carry a risk of negative immi-gration consequences. On the other hand, if the immigration consequences are clear, an attorney has the duty to give correct and detailed advice about such consequences. Attorneys may choose to assume that the immigration consequences are clear and provide detailed advice in order to avoid a claim of ineffective assistance.

STANDARDWhether an attorney provided ineffective

assistance is determined by the two step test set forth in a prior Supreme Court decision, Strickland v Washington. Strickland requires a determination of whether an attorney’s rep-resentation fell below an objective standard of reasonableness. This standard is measured by the professional norms such as the Ameri-can Bar Association and National Legal Aid and Defender Association standards. If an attorney’s representation is found to be be-low this standard, the court moves on to the second prong of the test which looks at the prejudicial affect of the representation. This means a determination of whether there is a reasonable probability that the result of the proceeding would have been different had it not been for the attorney’s representation. In this prong, the noncitizen must convince the court that he or she would not have taken the plea had it not been for the attorney’s repre-sentation and that the decision would have been rational under the circumstances.

NONCITIZENPadilla is a landmark case for both at-

torneys and noncitizens. Although in many states, including California, an attorney previously had the duty to provide advice regarding immigration consequences, Padilla now requires active, competent advice and states that non-advice or silence is insuf-ficient assistance. A claim for ineffective

assistance for a noncitizen is not limited to incorrect advice regarding immigration consequences nor is it any longer enough in the majority of cases to tell a client that there may be potential immigration consequences. In order to ensure proper advice according to Padilla, attorneys must now inquire about the immigration status of their client, investigate and understand immigration consequences and actively provide correct advice.

ADVICEFor noncitizens, the Padilla decision

ensures that they are provided with advice on potential immigration consequences and allows them to use such advice to make an informed decision on whether to enter a plea and also negotiate a plea that has minimal or no impact on their immigration status. Re-quiring attorneys to understand and advise on potential immigration consequences allows defense attorneys to discuss immigration consequences in the plea bargaining process thereby allowing prosecutors and defendants to reach agreements that better satisfy the interests of both parties. In some instances, negotiating a plea for one less day in jail can make the difference in whether a noncitizen qualifies for any relief from removal or is subject to mandatory detention while removal proceedings are pending.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

A Home In Both Countries?FOR MANY people it makes sense to hold onto their UK property after they have moved to the US. Some people are only likely to be here for a short period, whilst for others keeping open the option of returning makes it easier to adapt to their new life here. Certainly for people living in most parts of the US, property values here are nothing like those in the UK and once off the UK housing ladder it may be difficult to get back on!

We come from a country where it is pretty generally known that you don’t have to pay capital gains tax on the sale of your personal residence (except in very unusual circum-stances). And then you come here, where the exemption for a personal residence is limited. In particular, it has a financial limit of $250,000 for a single person and $500,000 for a married couple. This can give rise to a problem here because it is not so unusual for a UK property to produce a gain greater than that.

In addition to the monetary limit on the relief, there are two other conditions you must meet to get the full US exemption. You must have owned the property for at least two

years and it must have been your principal residence for at least two years in the five years prior to the sale. To meet that require-ment, you would need to sell the property within three years of coming to live in the US, because a UK property is very unlikely to have been your principal residence once you were living here (even if you are renting here). This is because it’s based on the amount of time spent at any property. If you don’t meet the conditions in full, there are provisions for getting a proportion of the relief.

Once you are a taxpayer here any gain must be declared on your US Return. Under the tax treaty, the first taxing rights on a sale of real property are with the country where the property is situated. This will not help you for capital gains because the UK will not be charging you capital gains tax – both because of the personal residence exemption and because it is not a tax charged on non-residents. (Though the UK may charge you to the tax on your return if your absence from the UK is less than five full tax years.)

Another point to remember concerns prop-erty rented out during your absence. Unlike

the UK, the US allows you to depreciate the value of the building that is rented out. (The value of the building is separate from the value of the land, which is not depreciated.) Any depreciation you have claimed whilst renting out the property must be added back in your gain computation, and this can produce a tax liability itself. This is something to be aware of if you rent out your property. And please don’t think you can avoid it by not claiming the depreciation, because the tax law allows depreciation to be added back if it was claimed – or could have been claimed!

The moral of the story is not to delay in determining when to sell a UK property, and to accept that the longer you keep it whilst you are here, the more likely you are to have a US liability on any eventual gain – even on the part of the gain that refers back to the time you were living in the UK. There are things you can do – but the choices narrow once you have become tax resident in the US!

Mary-Heather Styles is enjoying the sun-shine in Phoenix, Arizona and, at present, has no wish to return to the UK. She is kept busy and happy dealing with the US or UK tax issues of expatriates and can be contacted on (602) 845-1420 or at [email protected].

Bahrain Urges Britain To Protect

Kingdom’s EmbassyBAHRAIN’S foreign ministry has urged Britain to protect the Gulf kingdom’s embassy in London after two opposition supporters climbed onto its roof in a protest against the island’s Sunni rulers.

The ministry is calling on Britain to provide the “necessary protection for the embassy premises and its diplomats” after the incident in London when the two protesters climbed onto the roof and unfurled a banner against the Gulf state’s ruling family.

The ministry’s statement last month also called on Britain to take legal action against the two protesters.

Bahrain is in the grips of a 14-month Shiite uprising against its Sunni rulers.

Winehouse Family Launches Singer’s US Foundation

Ex-Death Row Brit Inmate In Ohio Court

A SCOTSMAN released from prison four years ago after spending two decades on Ohio’s death row is expected to enter a plea deal over accusations that he threatened a judge who prosecuted his original case.

Ken Richey was due in court where he was expected to enter a guilty plea to a felony charge. Richey is accused of leaving a threatening phone message for an Ohio county judge this past New Year’s Eve.

He was on death row for 21 years after being convicted of setting a fire that killed a two-year-old girl. Richey denied any involvement, and a US court determined his lawyers mishandled the case.

Richey was set free in 2008 under a deal that required him to plead no contest to a lesser charge.

By Mesfin FekaduTHE PARENTS of Amy Winehouse of-ficially launched the US branch of a foun-dation named for their daughter at New York’s Joe’s Pub, where the embattled star made her US debut five years ago.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation – aimed at assisting disadvantaged youth – raised $1m in the United Kingdom, Mitch Winehouse said at the event April 12.

He says in the US the organization will focus on children “without access to music education and music therapy.” The family announced a donation of $10,000 to the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

Mitch Winehouse said he spoke to his daughter through a psychic, saying that she “is fully behind everything that we’re doing and she’s up in heaven waving her magic wand.”

Mitch Winehouse was joined by Amy’s mother, Janis, and her younger brother, Alex. He performed four songs with a jazz

band, at one point kissing his cellphone which had a photo of his daughter on it.

He’ll release a book about his relation-ship with his daughter, who died of ac-cidental alcohol poisoning on July 23 at her London home. Amy, My Daughter will

be released on June 26. All proceeds will benefit the foundation, he said.

The organization also announced the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards and Gala, to be held on September 10 in New York. Online: www.amywinehousefoundation.org/

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAIN’S FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS

FRANK FOSTER’S body is found stone cold dead on the factory floor and the police are all over the place. There’s lights flashing, cops swarming and Norris gawping. He’s even handing out bon-bons in exchange for gossip from anyone who knows anything, but nobody does. Carla’s hauled to the cop shop as her fingerprints are all over the whisky bottle that’s been used to kill Frank. Mind you, her fingerprints can be found all over most of the whisky bottles in the north-west. But it’s Frank’s mum Anne who has killed her own son and then she goes berserk, apologising to Carla for her son raping her and then trying to kill Carla with a huge kitchen knife.

Happier news has been Dennis proposing to Rita this month. Or rather, Rita letting Den-nis know she wants to be proposed to. And so he asks and she says yes. Norris turns rather sniffy about the whole thing, as you knew he would, he’s jealous of course and wonders if he’ll go to the wedding. “I’m hardly Dennis’ best man,” he mopes to Rita, “No,” she tells him, “But you are mine.” And with that she gives Norris a little notepad to write down his jottings for his wedding speech. Norris gives her a lovely look, puts the little notepad back on the Kabin shelf and takes a much larger one instead. At their engagement party at the Bistro, Dennis makes a smashing speech about how he and Rita met all those years ago. “To Rita Littlewood,” he says, raising his glass. “Who sang and danced and was the apple of my eye.”

Over at the Rovers, Karl and Sunita flirt across the pumps as money goes missing from the Rovers’ till. Stella accuses her staff of nicking the dosh and upsets everyone, but it’s Karl who’s taken the money to pay off his

gambling debts. Sunita and Dev are having problems at home and she ends up getting very drunk and dancing on a car roof. She’s carted to the cop shop and it’s Karl who picks up Sunita after she’s let off with a caution for being drunk and disorderly. And in the cab on the way home, Sunita and Karl share a kiss. Just a small kiss, and a very drunken one at that, but it was a kiss nonetheless.

At Nick’s Bistro, Lewis gets his job back as meeter and greeter on Coronation Streeter and everyone’s happy, especially Audrey who is back together with Lewis, much to the an-noyance of her family. Gail tells Audrey that if she’s stepping back out with Lewis, she never wants to speak to her mother again. This upsets Audrey, who tells Lewis the best thing to do is act like two grown-ups, be the adults they are and do something mature – like run away on a round-the-world cruise. For Audrey to get the money for the cruise, she needs David to sign the hair salon back to her so that she can release some funds. David refuses and Gail backs him up while Nick tries to act as peacemaker, and fails.

Eileen’s doing her utmost to keep her fella sweet but it ain’t easy when her fella’s wife is living with them, even if she doesn’t know where she is half the time. Because the other half of the time, she does, and therein lies Eileen’s problem. I’m loving this storyline because it’s highlighting how devastating Alzheimer’s Disease can be, not just for the person who’s suffering from it but also for their family and friends.

Meanwhile, Leanne tells Peter she’s going for custody of little Simon as he’s clearly too drunk to take care of his son. Whether Leanne is doing this out of the goodness of her heart for what she feels for little Simon or out of the badness of her heart for what she feels against Peter running off with Carla, well, it’s all kind of mixed up right now.

OVER THE years, many Mitchells have come and gone in Albert Square; they barge in everyone’s business, do a lot of shouting, a bit of threatening, throw their weight around and leave mostly fear and loathing in their psychotic wakes. But Ben Mitchell started out different; the one-time sweet, twinkle toes Ben, son of Kathy, at first seemed to break the Mitchell mold. But trauma, and maybe genetics, have taken their toll, and as it turns out, Ben just might be the most psycho Mitchell of all (and that’s really saying something!)…

This month … Bianca is having the usual trouble making ends meet … Janine is busy buying lots of gear for her impending baby and planning to marry Michael (if he’ll just sign the extensive pre-nup) … Across the Square, Billy’s granddaughter, Lola, is also pregnant but with no money to fit out her nursery, he’s secretly using Janine’s credit card numbers to buy what she needs … Lauren continues to lurch around the Square drunk. Max tosses her out of the house, thinking it will smarten her up, but it doesn’t … Heather and Andrew plan their wedding

… In financial desperation, and with Phil banged up, Alfie partners up with Derek to unload dodgy gear, but before the month is out, and with Phil giving him an ultimatum, Alfie (with the assist of Billy playing dumb) double-crosses Derek. But will Billy flash-ing around the money make them all get caught?…

Phil is still in jail because of the lies Ben told to put him there. With the Mitchells toss-ing him out because of that, he moves in with a supportive Ian. But once Ben admits to Ian that he lied, Ian goes to see DI Marsden to report it all, and the Square waits for Phil to be released …

But Ben mistakenly thinks that it’s Heather who grassed him up to the Old Bill, and as he panics that Phil will be out and take his revenge, Ben goes to confront Heather (and steal her wedding money so he can run away), with Jay chasing after him to try to calm him down. But Heather has given the money to Andrew for safekeeping, and when she tells the angry and increasingly violent Ben that she hasn’t got any, he grabs the framed picture of Heather and Shirley and hits Heather over the head with it, killing her. The boys panic. Just then Phil barges in, sees Heather dead on the floor and instead of going after Ben (as we assume he had planned to do) he helps him cover up the murder. He tells Ben to toss the frame in the canal, and he says he did, but we see later he stashed it.

Back at Chez Mitchell, despite her dead

body still lying on the floor in her flat, Ben is finding it easy to joke about Heather and why she hasn’t shown up for dinner, while Jay is sick. Shirley goes over to Heather’s to find her and finds her body.

At first the cops haul in Heather’s fiance Andrew, and Phil is happy to let him take the rap for Ben, but thanks to some detective work by Dot, he’s freed. Ben has no con-science at all while Jay is sick and increasing sick over having to keep this secret. Shirley wants to keep George but Phil calls the social behind her back because Ben says having George there is like Heather is looking at him. It seems obvious that Phil is afraid of his own son and what he’s capable of. He looks at him like he’s an alien. He tries to keep him away from George. But he doesn’t turn him in. Now with the cops back looking around the Square, Ben takes the murder weapon from under his bed and puts it under Jay’s mat-tress, while the cops haul away Billy because he can’t say where he’d gotten all the money he’s been flashing about…

Airline Employee Resigns Amid Celeb Tip-Off ClaimsA VIRGIN ATLANTIC employee has resigned following allegations she rou-tinely fed information about the com-pany’s celebrity clientele to a paparazzi agency, the airline said last month.

Virgin said that the employee, a junior member of the team tasked with looking after high-profile clients, quit ahead of reports published in the Guardian and the Press Gazette alleging that she’d passed more than 60 celebri-ties’ booking information on to the Big Pictures photo agency.

Among those allegedly targeted: Britain’s Princess Beatrice; singers Madonna and Rihanna; actors Charl-

ize Theron, Kate Winslet, Daniel Rad-cliffe and Sienna Miller; comedians Sacha Baron Cohen and Russell Brand; and a slew of UK celebrities and sports figures.

MESSAGESBoth the Guardian and the Press

Gazette cited messages allegedly sent by the employee to someone at Big Pictures Ltd as the basis for their stories.

The Associated Press had no imme-diate way of verifying the authenticity of the messages, but the Guardian said it had carried out checks confirming that at least some of the celebrities had

traveled to the destinations mentioned in the emails.

In a statement, Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd called the allegations “extremely serious” and said it had launched an investigation. The airline, which is majority-owned by billionaire adventurer Richard Branson, con-firmed that high-profile clients were involved but declined to comment on the British newspapers’ figures.

Neither Virgin nor the newspapers identified the employee in question. The Guardian said it had contacted her on and that she had declined comment.

Woman Traps Herself In Self-Assembly WardrobeAFTER GETTING trapped inside her DIY wardrobe kit a woman called 999 last month.

This was just one of the latest in a litany of bizarre emergencies revealed by Leices-tershire Fire and Rescue Service following a Freedom of Information Act request.

A firefighter said: “She wasn’t that un-happy, as she had her cigarettes with her while she was waiting to be rescued.”

Over a period, a staggering 49 people also dialled 999 to have rings removed from their fingers.

On six occasions – mainly on stag or hen parties – handcuffs have had to be cut off.

One man managed to drive to the fire

station despite accidentally impaling his foot with a garden fork while a husband needed rescuing after jamming his toe in his bath tap.

Neil Mayne, a firefighter for nearly 30 years, said: “You do get some strange ones.

“Sometimes, if it’s a stag do when somebody is stuck in handcuffs or chained to a phone box, then you can have a bit of banter with them.

“Otherwise, it’s all done with a straight face because it’s all part of the service.

“Yes, it costs money to do and yes some people think there are better things we could be spending our time on but who else are people going to call?”

British Library Buys $14.3m Ancient GospelTHE BRITISH Library has paid £9m to acquire the St Cuthbert Gospel, a remark-ably well-preserved survivor of seventh-century Britain described by the library as the oldest European book to survive fully intact.

The palm-sized book, a manuscript copy of the Gospel of John in Latin, was bought from the British branch of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), the library said last month.

The book measures 3.8 inches by 5.4 inches and has an elaborately tooled red leather cover. It comes from the time of St Cuthbert, who died in 687, and it was discovered inside his coffin when it was opened in 1104 at Durham Cathedral.

The British Library said the artifact is one of the world’s most important books.

“To look at this small and intensely beautiful treasure from the Anglo-Saxon period is to see it exactly as those who cre-ated it in the seventh century would have seen it,” said the library’s chief executive, Lynne Brindley.

Cuthbert’s coffin arrived in Durham after monks had removed it from the island of Lindisfarne, 330 miles north of London, to protect the remains from Viking raiders in the ninth and 10th centuries.

The book will be displayed at the British Library in London and then in Durham, northeast England, next year.

Hosepipe Ban Hits A Third Of The Country

AFTER 18 months of poor rainfall across the country, a hosepipe ban was announced in early April. It roughly covers the south-eastern third of the country, is likely to apply for the rest of the year and will cost you £1,000 if you ignore it. The water companies are deeply upset about the situation.

Yet it is hard to have any sympathy for the water companies who have enjoyed nearly a quarter of a century of prosperity since Margaret Thatcher privatised the lot in 1989. Actually if she’d had her way, water would have been sold off in 1984. However, she ran into severe opposition and shelved the scheme to avoid electoral unpopularity but rapidly introduced it following electoral success in 1987.

There were no very good reasons other than ideological ones for privatisation. The claim that market competition would bring efficiency and lower prices was utterly spuri-ous since from the start there was never any competition: each water company operated as a monopoly in its own area. In fact, as an added attraction, the water companies were also given a 25-year monopoly in their own areas. Moreover, far from prices going down, they went up 50 percent in the space of four years.

INDUCEMENTSFurther inducements came from the

Government by wiping out all the water companies’ debts, something in the region of £5bn, and by offering the companies a hefty discount on the cash price, estimated at 22 percent of the real market price judging from the rise in share prices after a week of private ownership.

The water companies’ profits rose up to 1997 by 147 percent as they wallowed in the moneymaking attractions. The consumer was able to derive great pleasure from the increased dividends distributed to sharehold-ers and the handsome salaries the top men were able to pay themselves.

What enabled them to rake in so much in the way of profit was that initially they had made great plans for investment, thus clearing the way to raise prices. Crucially, that planned expenditure on repairing mains

was never made, thereby making it seem as though they were making a healthy profit.

This avoidance of spending can be seen in a couple of typical instances, one of which was Southern Water submitting plans for sewage treatment plants – except that they were not installed. Another example was Yorkshire Water which managed to avoid spending £50m on sewage treatment. This was achieved by the Conservative Govern-ment redefining the coastal waters near the city of Hull as sea – where untreated sewage could be dumped – instead of estuary where sewage would have to be treated.

EXAMPLEYorkshire Water, in fact, is an interesting

example of the ways companies have handled their affairs. The price set by the Government for the company back in 1989 reflected an undertaking to renovate immediately 380km of sewers. But despite this modest target, the company had only succeeded in improving 65km by 1999.

In most of the world, water is a publicly-owned utility. Here in Britain privatisation rules. The profit margins vary from company to company: Yorkshire Water takes a modest 42 percent while Southern Water squeezes a niggardly 59 percent. Abroad, Suez-Lyon-naise takes 2.4 percent, admittedly for water alone while up in Stockholm the Swedes are subjected to a 19 percent profit margin for both water and sewage.

Another reason that I have little sympathy for the water companies is that they them-selves are mainly responsible for the water shortage.

LOSTIt is a fact that every day an estimated

3.28 billion litres of water is lost in Britain as a result of leaking mains.

Thames Water, for instance, makes you liable for a £1,000 fine should you use a hosepipe yet that company loses enough water every day to fill an Olympic swimming pool 269 times a day, adding up to a loss of 673 million litres each day for the last twelve months. As a matter of interest, it is estimated that the average householder uses a whopping 150 litres per day, whilst the average roof in the

South East gets about 100,000 litres of rain washing off it into the water companies’ jurisdiction.

On the credit side, if you are a Thames Water shareholder, it managed to raise prices last month by 6.5 percent on the back of an operating

profit of £600m last year. This comes at a time when the annual inflation rate is officially around 2.5 percent.

ARRESTEDThe companies have imposed the hosepipe

ban but they have also announced that they have no intention of policing it. During the last such ban in 2006 lasting several months only one person was done for using a hosepipe – and he was only arrested because he as-saulted a policeman.

Actually, the first person to be convicted for wasting water was Joseph Gorton, a chauffeur, who was fined 20 shillings in 1921 for washing his employer’s car in Belgravia. The Metropolitan Water Board inspector had noticed water pouring down the gutter from a hosepipe “thrown down by the side” of the vehicle.

Ten years earlier a sweltering summer also caused a drought. So overwhelmingly exhausting were conditions in the cotton mills and quarries of Lancashire that they were shut down in the middle of the afternoon. To compensate in an early application of flexi-time, workers were expected to start work at 4:30 in the morning. The British Cavalry did their bit with a ban on exercising horses.

Using modelling data arising out of the 2006 drought, the companies reckon they will save five percent of the water used by domestic customer. Between April and September that year the hosepipe ban saved exactly that – 100 million litres a day.

Or put it another way, the ban will save about one seventh of what just one company wastes in one day!

“To eat is human;to digest, divine”

– Charles T Copeland

I RECENTLY hosted a tea party for some of my British friends (… five English, and one Scot!!!) and we had a good old natter and chin wag; it’s so traditional, we’ve all been over here for years but still enjoy the custom! I fancied making some ginger-bread, but wanted to try a different recipe that I had. However I didn’t have all the ingredients that was asked for so decided to use what I had available, an interesting mix. The recipe asked for sultanas, but didn’t have ’em, so I checked a drawer in my fridge and had some dried pineapple, apricots, and some dates. Also the stem ginger I had was only a small amount. So I experimented and played around with it a bit and since we had a piece at tea time today thought it was still good.

Gingerbread recipes goes back to medi-eval times, but they used honey instead of treacle, which at the time was considered to be a medicine as an antidote for poisons, and golden syrup was not made until the 1880’s.

(Ginger is good also for the digestion or upset tummy, hence my quote at the beginning)

A type of gingerbread from the north of England (indeed gingerbread is attributed to the north and Scotland) is called Parkin, traditionally served around Guy Fawkes, November 5 , but that recipe tends to also use oatmeal and a mix of treacle and golden syrup.

So I hope you enjoy my newer version of gingerbread, I always love to experiment and feel it came out just fine!

‘Fruity’ Gingerbread2 cups all purpose flour2tsp ground ginger1/2 tsp cinnamon1 tsp bicarbonate of sodaPinch of salt3/4-1 cup Golden syrup6 Tbsp butter1/3 cup stem ginger1 cup mixed chopped up dates, dried apricots and dried pineapple2/3 cup dark brown sugar2 large eggs1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix first five dry ingredients. Put the golden syrup with the butter in a medium sized saucepan (need some space for it to bubble up) and warm over a low heat. Finely chop up the ginger and other fruits evenly and add to the syrup mixture. Let it gently bubble for a couple of minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Remove from heat source. Add the flour mix, stirring with a wooden spoon then add the beaten eggs and the milk … the mixture will be quite sloppy. Place in lightly greased glass nine inch square pan and bake for 30 minutes or until the cake tester comes out clean.

Donovan Inducted To Rock Hall Of Fame Trevor Francis Released From

Hospital Following Heart Attack

FORMER footballer Trevor Fran-cis was released from hospital April 16 following sur-gery after a heart attack

The 57-year-old Francis be-came England’s f i r s t mi l l i on-pound footballer after being bought by Nottingham Forest from Birmingham for that figure in 1979.

The former England striker was released after having recovered well from successful surgery to fit a stent into a blood vessel.

Francis scored 12 goals in 52 games for England, and has also managed Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace.

He also spent six years playing in Italy, for Sampdoria and Atalanta, in the 1980s.

Hacker Jailed Over Abortion Website AttackA JUDGE has sentenced a computer hacker to two years and eight months in jail for breaking into the website of Britain’s biggest abortion provider and stealing the personal details of thousands of women.

James Jeffery, who claimed to be a member of hacking collective Anonymous, said he targeted the British Pregnancy Advice Service because he opposed the decisions of two women he knew to have abortions.

Prosecutors say the 27-year-old defaced the site with the Anonymous logo and stole personal information about some 10,000 women.

Jeffrey pleaded guilty to two charges under the Computer Misuse Act.

Passing sentence last month at Lon-don’s Southwark Crown Court, Judge Michael Gledhill said there could have been “terrible consequences” if Jeffery had published the women’s details.

St Mawes Gets A Monopoly – Or Monopoly Gets St Mawes

A BEAUTIFUL, picturesque Cornish vil-lage has become the smallest place in the world to have a version of the Monopoly game bearing its name.

Population 1,000, St Mawes received its very own limited edition Monopoly board after locals Amelia and Tim Whitaker, B&B propri-etors, got in touch with the game’s makers.

Instead of Oxford Street and Bond Street, the St Mawes Monopoly features local landmarks such as the lighthouse and 16th century castle.

While the rules are the same as with traditional Monopoly, the game has a number of local twists. For example, rather than pay a luxury tax, players are charged a mooring fee. They can also be charged £50 for driving off the harbour wall.

And rather than the normal red houses, it boasts quaint, white seaside cottages.

Amelia and Tim joined forces with lo-cal hotelier Olga Polizzi to get the game made.

They appealed to UK manufacturer Winning Moves, which produces Mo-nopoly boards in Britain under licence to Hasbro.

Before the company agreed to make their design, the trio had to promise to sell 1,000 of the

boards within a year or pay back the rest of the

money.By Tom WithersDONOVAN, the folksy British singer-songwriter once labeled “the new Dylan,” has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Overlooked by voters in previous years, Donovan has finally been saluted for his accomplishments as a gifted lyricist and musician. Born Donovan Leitch, he blended poetry into folk songs and scored a string of hits in the 1960s with Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow and Hurdy Gurdy Man.

The 65-year-old Donovan was inducted last month in Cleveland by fellow Hall of

Famer John Mellencamp, who said he was in seventh grade when he bought his first Donovan record in 1965.

Mellencamp said his work was inspired by Donovan’s melodies, lyrics and ar-rangements. Mellencamp says listening to Donovan taught him “how to play those songs.”

The Best Kept Secret...

2800 S. Harbor Blvd, Oxnard, Ca

IT’S SPRING, and not a moment to soon! www.britweek.org is in full bloom. Now in its sixth year, recognizing the contributions we Brits add to the culture of the American life, from film, theatre, music, business to the importance of a cup of tea and a pint! It took a group of dedicated Brits and Yanks in the US to accomplish this goal, following the idea of Nigel Lythgoe who took his thoughts to former Consul General Bob Peirce. They put together the concept of BritWeek and the rest is history! Since Bob has moved to the private sector, his American wife Sharon Harroun Peirce has taken the reins of the organization, coordinating various events with sponsors Jaguar, Virgin Atlantic, Champneys, Cunard, Variety, Fig restaurant, Fairmont Miramar Hotel, InterContinental LA, Four Seasons Hotel, BBC, CLProjects, IM Intelligent.media, and Boots, to name a few.

Some of those who have helped promote with their time, efforts, or personal appear-ances have included the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Juliet Mills, Eric Idol, Hugh Laurie, John Cleese, Jeff Lynne, Along with, Nigel Lythgoe, Ryan Seascrest, Simon Cowell, Michael Sheen, Sir Richard Branson, Tony Blair, Zandra Rhodes, George Blodwell, Victoria and David Beckham.

Events change from year to year have included soccer, Rugby, Cricket, Pub Quiz’s with celebrities at the Olde Ship in Fullerton, Dart contests at the Kings Head in Santa Monica, fashion shows at studios to the Fashion Plaza in Orange County, British car shows, presentations by Jaguar at the Design Centre in West Hollywood, along with British

furnishings and fabric. As BritWeek grows it’s also a good

time to celebrate all things British at most locals: Pubs are enjoying weeks (21 days) of merriment. If your pub or shop wants to get involved, contact www.britweek.org or us here at the paper, and we’ll pass your info along.

There’s still time to participate as we go to press including on May 4 An Evening with Piers Morgan in conversation with Jackie Collins, supporting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Check out www.BritWeek.org for all the events as they’re too numerous to mention.

Gillian Campbell covered a hugely suc-cessful Speakers Breakfast “In Beverly Hills March 30, Paul Tweed a leading Media lawyer in the UK, kept a room full of BABC LA members riveted by his insight into phone hacking cases against Newscorp in the UK. The audience heard how Mr Tweed’s many clients were victims and how he is currently investigating its prevalence in the US by UK tabloids and their counterparts. Interviewed by Chuck Henry, co-anchor of KNBC News the audience was kept captivated by a discus-sion on current media controversies in the US and UK including the phone hacking and wiki leaks scandals. This event was viewed later that evening on NBC LA.”

One event we attended last month in Malibu at The Sunset Restaurant on Zuma Beach, where I filmed a very popular Bod-dington’s Ale commercial called “Screen Kiss” which went worldwide but not the US.” The event was put on by the BABC. The whole place was packed with Brits, even Oksana Grigorieva, Mel Gibson’s ex was there. I talked to her for a while. No wonder Mel fell for her, she’s gorgeous! But see, that’s the danger: one’s easily trapped. Look at Karen and me. I’m such a romantic I’m in luv with luv itself.

Also reporting in on this event, Gillian Campbell said, “April 20 in Malibu at the Sunset, the building shook with a Night of Music in Malibu, put on by BABC LA who im-mersed members, guests, the entertainment

industry and just plain music lovers with Gary Miller and his friends. Gary is a Platinum Songwriter/Record Producer who toured with Sir Elton John and George Michael. Joining Gary were eight geniuses in their own rights who backed up Gary with music until midnight! There was also a special musical performance by Oksana Grigorieva whose piano and voice kept the packed room cap-tivated. The venue of the Sunset was perfect for this evening’s entertainment with Fritz the owner, tapping his feet as well! The evening

was aired the same night on Fox, Channel 11 Los Angeles as well as Extra TV.”

It was my big birthday with a “0” in it. Since I luckily survived a car crash, though still on pain pills and still hurting nearly five months later. Karen arranged a get-together of a few longtime friends to visit. So to show my undying luv and affection, as her early birthday present and to thank her for nurs-ing me back to health, I bought her a NEW vacuum cleaner! Now that’s caring!

Rudyard Kipling wrote, when you can walk

with Kings and Common men, then you are a Man my son.

I’d like to add to that, when you can meet the most famous people of the day, yet you recognize the greatest value is the friends you know everyday, then you are the luckiest person alive!

Most people don’t get or seek the rec-ognition they deserve. So my birthday was very special. Everyone that had known each other for 30+ years and what a good idea that was. Bill Wilkinson I first met in 1966 while promoting dances at the Grand Hotel in Torquay. His ex, and my girlfriend of the time, Cherry Dobbins introduced us. Cherry now lives in Cypress caring for animals.

I was right in the middle of a punch-up, throwing out this loud Yobbo. (we didn’t have the luxury of bouncers in those days, so, I was using friends or Brixham fishermen). I’m on the ground in an arm lock, waiting for the local constable to arrive, Cherry said, “Oh, hi Bill.” Bill was one of the crowd watching the fracas. Later Bill and I went to a casino to try out a system Bill thought he had perfected on roulette, which cured me of gambling forever. I lost my shirt! Not Bill. He went on to really perfect the art of handicapping the ponies, and is now one of the most sought after racing advisers worldwide. His hobbies building large model aircraft (Spitfires) and flying them in two fields he bought in Devon solely as an airfield.

His partner of 30 years, Zoe Clough, is an award winning director, producer, and presenter for the BBC, who I knew as a child when her father and my father worked to-gether at the now defunct Dartmouth Pottery

and what a clever and talented lady. When invited, she said, “We were going to Paris for the weekend! But Port Hueneme sounds much more exciting?”

Dr Barry Steer went to Oxford, became a professor at a Miami University, went on to work for Visa, and now consults with IBM, flying around the nation weekly instructing on new software.

Carol Schauger, my first wife, I met in Trois Rivers, Ontario, Canada at a night club. At the time I was waiting for immigration pa-pers to clear. Having just sailed the Atlantic in a 50’ ketch from Sweden, I got bored in New Jersey and joined a carnival to explore more of America. Met Carol, took her to England where we were married in the park, returned to New Jersey, then drove across the US in a Volkswagen. Lived in LA, split up a few years later. Carol went on to USC and got her Masters in Sociology, now works for the State as a supervisor with 15 staff in a youth corrections facility.

Dory Bass, my second wife, a UCLA graduate who I met through the late, great British comedian Jonathan Moore (long time friend). Dory is one of the more successful travel agents in LA. When we met, Dory worked for Sharon Osbourne’s father Don

Arden and was doing all the travel in those days for Black Sabbath, Ozzie Osbourne, Jeff Lynne, ELO, and Air Supply. Later she took over travel for the LA Lakers when Jerry Buss moved the team to LA. Last year she married five time Emmy Sound Engineer Bill Bass.

Sadly, not in the picture as they arrived late, and getting everyone’s attention was by then impossible, was Car Man Phil, his wife Pat, and daughter Eliana. Karen and I were married in Phil and Pat’s garden, with Phil being best man.

My thanks and gratitude to Karen, who not only tolerates me, but goes out of her way to coordinate great get togethers like his one. She works effortlessly for the Brits and I’m hoping we’ve given her a home within our Community. What came out of an extraordinarily enjoyable long weekend is pooling our resources with Zoe being the best writer, Karen the coordinator, and the rest of us plain wild putting various stories together from the last 50 years into book form. Everyone contributing.

If one can go through life and meet and enjoy such good people, and the thousand of others I’ve met, one can only feel grateful and be very humble.

Bert Weedon, Inspired Clapton, Knopfler, TownshendBERT WEEDON, 91, the guitarist whose popular Play in a Day instruc-tional manual introduced a generation of rock-and-roll stars to the power of the guitar, died April 20 at his home in Beaconsfield, England. He was 91. Long before he gained fame as the author of a top-selling guide to the guitar, Weedon was known as a versatile performer who could play virtually any style of music at a glance. He performed with such renowned jazz artists as Stephane Grap-pelli and George Shearing, accompanied singers Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney and Judy Garland, and was a regular on BBC broadcasts in the 1940s and 1950s. Weedon was an ear ly rock-and-roll guitar star in Britain in the late 1950s, with a series of instrumen-tal hits that included Guitar Boogie Shuffle, Apache and Nashville Boogie. When his instructional book was first

published in 1957, he became some-thing of a spiritual godfather to a gen-eration of would-be guitar heroes. Its title Play in a Day offered the hope of instant musical gratification. The lessons began at the most basic level, with an illustration of how to hold a gui-tar. Weedon taught novices how to get through many rock-and-roll tunes with three basic chords and included point-

ers on how to play a few basic tunes. His guide, which was updated through the 1980s, sold millions of copies, leading Britain’s Independent news-paper to call Weedon “the man who taught the world to play the guitar.” Many top rock stars, including Eric Clap-ton, Mark Knopfler, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Brian May and three of the Beatles George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney studied Weedon’s book. Weedon once told of how Frank Sinatra made him a proposition: “He asked me if I’d like to go and play guitar in America,” Weedon recalled in 1995. “He was the greatest pop singer in the world, and I was immensely flattered. I thanked him very much, but I told him No I said I’d rather be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.” His first marriage, to Doris Weedon, ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Maggie Weedon; and two sons.

Could Be The End Of F***ing In AustriaIT HAD TO happen. The residents of of F***ing in Austria (pronounced Fooking) were to meet over the proposed name change of their picture post card village.

Though prankster calls have been rife over the last few years, as reported in UJ, many locals are hoping to end phone calls (in English) asking questions such as: “Is That F***ing” – before hanging up.

F***ing Mayor Franz Meindl said the village’s road signs were regularly stolen – even though they were now welded on steel posts set in concrete.

“The phone calls are really the final straw,” he said.

Couples have also been spotted romp-ing naked in front of the signs, and local entrepreneurs cashed in by selling F***ing postcards, F***ing Christmas cards and

even F***ing beer.Residents last voted on the subject as

far back as1996 when it decided to keep the name despite increasing numbers of tourists posing for photographs next to the signs.

An alternative proposal before the 100 residents is to change the village’s name to “Fugging”

Historians have found that in the 16th century, the name was spelled with “g” and many want this to be reinstated.

Mayor Meindl added: “I always wanted the name to stay but it’s just got too much now.

“The only problem is that we need all of the F***ing residents to agree to the name change, everyone needs to agree for it to happen.”

MIAMI April 18, 2012. From right: Florida’s Consul-General Kevin McGurgan, 1988 Olympic Champion British boxer Lennox Lewis and Roy Yates President of the South Florida Royal Society of St George. One hundred British Embassies around the world celebrated the 100 Days Countdown to the London Olympics with various flamboyant events in cities from Kuala Lumpur to Caracas to New York to Istanbul. We did our country proud here in Florida too. Miami’s British Consulate-General staff (305) 400-6400 organised a patriotic event: Lennox Lewis and the Consul-General led 100 cyclists, primarily local British residents , along South Beach, accompanied by a British-flagged Mini Cooper and a red Double Decker London Bus. Lennox, the Consul and the Mayor of Miami Beach gave pre-ride speeches from the topdeck, where I was with others, waving our UK flags with gusto at bemused tourists below. Lennox Lewis has a home in Miami and still trains at the famous Fifth Street Gym where Mohammed Ali first honed his talents. Plaudits to our Consular staff for a spectacular public British event – hopefully they will do more. n ARE YOU A BRITISH BUSINESS-OWNER on an E2 visa in Florida ? Orlando-based Zoe Ad-ams, via her organization E2 Visa Reform, has been working since 2007 to change the laws on the E2 visa. (To understand their goals, see my article in this column November 2011 and add your voice by visiting their website www.e2visareform.org). Now Zoe would like to get an accurate count of E2 busi-nesses in Florida. She told me, “We have 208 such businesses on our list to date, with an initial invest-ment of $59,650,886. In 2011 it was $172,313,539 and $200,801,216 so far in 2012. These British owners employ 2,951 people, mainly Americans. Impressive figures, which makes a difference when we speak to politicians who can help us effect reform.” To add more influence, she now wants to create an E2 directory and adds “If you’re travelling and wanted to look up other E2 Visa holders in Florida, you could check it out. It is

always nice for expats to support each other by maybe eating at an E2 restaurant or stay at an E2 Bed and Breakfast or just use a service from a fellow E2er. It is amazing to see the range of businesses we all run. “So UJ readers who are E2 business owners, email your Name, phone and business name and address to: [email protected]

THERE IS no doubt that the most significant invention in this modern world is electricity, because without it the world would be a very different place than we have now. In fact, it wasn’t really an invention; more of an ac-cumulation of different inventions spanning many years, providing us with what we now consider as an essential part of our lives. Without electric our planet wouldn’t run anywhere near as efficiently as it does.

The first horseless carriages were steam driven, but it wasn’t long before the electric car was invented. The first electric car originated with a Scottish inventor named Robert Anderson, between 1832 and 1839.

The vehicle didn’t revolutionise the industry, however, as the batteries weren’t recharge-able. The lead-acid batteries we have today had not been invented yet. Contributing to this disadvantage, electric powered carriages were about to be taken over by a newer revo-lution, the internal combustion engine.

Thomas Edison’s electric light bulb had been around for quite some time when the first internal combustion engine vehicles “overtook” the horseless carriage industry, but technology hadn’t advanced enough to make practical use of electric in motor vehicles. This saw necessitating another industry to “light the way” to help make these new horseless carriages safe to drive after the daylight had faded.

It came to be that Joseph Lucas was the man to light up the roads for British motor cars for many years to come. In the 1850’s Lucas was an unemployed father of six, so to make ends meet he sold paraffin oil from a barrow in and around the streets of Hockley, Birmingham. He had little education as his only schooling was at a nearby church Sun-day school. His 17-year-old son joined Lucas in his new venture and together they formed a company called Joseph Lucas & Son’s. At this time they expanded their activities to selling paraffin lamps and various pressed steel goods, buckets and the like. Harry, the son, then designed their first vehicle product, a cycle lamp which he called “King of the Road”. The lamp was an innovative invention, paraffin fuelled and would stay lit even in strong winds. This lamp was a great success and seeded the start of the Lucas Lamp-making business. Several versions of Lucas lamps followed and although all of these lights became known around Britain as King of the Road lamps only the Lucas top-line, expensive model lamps were named as such.

With the technical expertise of Harry the company expanded its product line to include many bicycle accessories, and with them the Joseph Lucas & Son company became a veritable enterprise. Again, it was Harry who can be accredited with the step up from cycle accessories to the then expanding Motor indus-try. Motoralities was the name Harry gave his new line of accessories, and by 1902 a steady supply by the company to the motor industry of non-electrical goods began.

By 1914 Lucas had expanded into electri-cal products, lamps mostly, and received a contract from Morris Motors Ltd to supply electric lamps for their motor cars. Techni-cal expertise was needed to step up beyond lamp-making for the evolving electrical com-ponents the motor industry now demanded; much more than Harry was gifted with, so acquisitions were made. Lucas company took on businesses with knowledge, expertise and market share. The first to join the pair was C A Vandervell (CAV) who made and supplied magnetos and dynamos for both the motor and aircraft industries.

A few years later the CAV branch of Lucas took over Bosch, who made fuel injection systems for diesel engines. Then, Rotax joined Lucas in 1914, they specialized in electrical aircraft components. Another takeover was Simms Motor Units Co who specialized in dynamos, starter motors, coils and spark plugs for the motor industry. By 1920 the Joseph Lucas & Son’s company had become a major player in the new motor car industry; it was in 1920 that Lucas signed a number of cross licensing agreements with Bosch, Delco and most of the other auto-motive electrical equipment manufacturers in Europe and North America. In addition, these agreements included a non-competitive clause, agreeing that Lucas would not sell any electrical equipment in their countries and they would not sell electrical equipment in Great Britain. By the mid 1930s Lucas had a virtual monopoly of automotive electrical equipment in Great Britain. In fact the British motor industries were reliant on the Lucas Co moreso than Lucas was to them, as Lucas had also expanded into the aircraft industry.

From the mid-30s up until the 70s no Brit-ish car would run without Lucas electronics, it was a total domination of Britain’s auto industry. An agreement was also made with Smiths, who manufactured gauges for the

British motor industry, to not venture into each other businesses. This agreement was later challenged by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission but was allowed to stand – the Commission concluded that the

domination by Lucas, and a few other com-panies of the motor components industry, whether sustained by restrictive agreements or not, was justified in order that the motor industry should con-tinue to have reliable supplies of cheap but good-quality compo-nents.

In North America the Lucas Co are humorously called the “Prince of Darkness” and the inventors of the short circuit. This title award was partially due, I believe, to the American’s mechanics unfamiliarity with Lucas electronics. Or, perhaps Lucas was branded with this title because of the British Leyland era when qual-ity control was almost non-existent. The main reason any car breaks down has always been due to an electrical problem somewhere, and this is probably why the blame was aimed at a Lucas product.

I take a little offense to this Prince of Darkness moniker as I served part of my apprenticeship at the Joseph Lucas & Son’s company. As it happened I worked in the car parts division and had nothing to do with electrical parts. It was a good company to work for though, and boasted great talent amongst the workers. They had a sugges-tion program whereas everyone, especially apprentices were encouraged to take part. They gave prizes for any worthwhile sugges-tion and even consolation prizes for stupid suggestions, these were points which one could collect and redeem for a prize chosen from the Lucas catalog. They were all Lucas products of course, fog-lamps, spot-lamps, batteries etc. One could always tell a Lucas worker by their car being full of lamps, it was like the lightshow fantastic on the Lu-cas parking lot on a workday morning, with thousands of cars arriving at the same time lights shining.

Lucas continued on through acquisitions, mergers and market-share monopolies to become a global empire split into several divisions. It was the British car market that kick started Lucas though and the company surpassed every British car manufacture – and all this from a paraffin lamp, The King of the Road.

SELF PUBLISHED author Jill Schaefer’s second book, Coming of Age in California – English Style is a lighthearted account of the author’s true story of herself, Jewell, a naive English teen, fresh from home and convent school, venturing forth with her school friend Margaret to the California of the 1950s. The female duo travel from Southampton, England on the Queen Mary to New York City then cross-country by Greyhound bus via Route 66 to a welcome in Pasadena. The two girls first visit California’s small town of Bakersfield where they experience a quick and eye opening stay with relatives. Finally the adventurous pair are in the heat and happenings of Hollywood for their first US jobs and their first apartment. Late night mysterious random calls connects them with a call-girl ring which interrupts their life.

In the meantime, the girls are growing tired of the dating scene with soldiers from the USO dances so they vow never to date any more military men. The journey continues to Long Beach to another aunt only to discover it is

a Naval base! Marga-ret and Jewel catch on quick to the coastal life by sharing a beach cliff apartment with two other English girls and Jewell lands a job with the Miss Universe Pageant at the Long Beach Auditorium. The fresh air by the sea

invigorates a new life style which big changes for the long time school chums. Along the way they encounter climate, communica-tion, customs, and cultural challenges plus a disintegrating friendship while growing up and discovering new relationships.

Jewell finally leaves Southern California for San Francisco, city of sophistication and singles bars. Yet like any wayward Brit or immigrant, the ties to home beckon. The book’s 374 pages are divided up into 35 quick chapters with a prologue and epilogue plus 14 small black and white photo of the author during her visit. I loved reading this book and I took my time over a week to enjoy it as it was a great escape from reality for a time gone by. I really could see this book adapted into a movie. It is a British light version of Thelma and Louise involving the Tip Top club, parties, pubs and being foreign while speaking English. The subplot to the story is that it is being read by the author’s daughter at the same time you are reading it! A bit surreal, it is like reading your cousin’s diary!

As Jill puts it, “While a peep into the past for modern ChicLit readers, Mother Hens will brood over the adventurous chicks as if their own and ‘others’ (per Jill – ‘old Biddies’)’ will find themselves cackling and clucking over the escapades in a bygone era when they, too, were young and coming of age.”

The author Jill Schaefer was featured in this column earlier this year with her other book, Up The Wooden Hill which is her WWII memoir of the London Blitz and her German husband’s memories of Nazi Germany. Jill has lived on the California West Coast for the past 35 years, 15 years in Santa Barbara and Goleta plus 20 in Lompoc. She, her late husband and three sons emigrated from England and Germany in 1974.

Huh? US And British English To Collide At Olympics

THE LORRY driver taking kit to the football pitch was so knackered he pulled into the lay-by near the petrol station for a quick kip.

Huh? Sorry! Shouldn’t that be “Pardon”?For American readers, that translates as: The truck driver delivering uniforms to the

soccer field was so tired he pulled into the rest area near the gas station for a nap.As George Bernard Shaw once observed, England and America are two countries

divided by a common language. That trans-Atlantic linguistic divide will be magnified by Olympic proportions this summer when an estimated 250,000 Americans will be in Britain for the London Games.

Yes, the Internet, television, movies, global travel and business have blurred language differences, and many people in the US and UK are familiar with those bizarre figures of speech from both sides of the pond.

Yet important differences remain, prompt-ing this rough guide to just a few of the potential colloquial conundrums that await baffled American visitors to the old country. (A caveat: This is not a definitive, all-inclusive list and doesn’t take into account different spelling, accents, Cockney rhyming slang or expletives!)

FOOD: Those are “chips” that go with your burger, instead of fries. You’d like some potato chips? Those are “crisps.”

A “cracker” isn’t only what you put cheese on. It’s also a very good thing, as in “That

goal was a cracker!” It can be an adjective, too: “London will put on a cracking open-ing ceremony.”

And re “sport.” That’s singular in Britain, not like sports in the US. Those “blokes” (guys) hawking 100-meter final tickets? They’re not scalpers, they’re “ticket touts.” Incidentally, if you can’t get any tickets, you can always watch on “telly” where the commercials are called “adverts.”

You’ll definitely do a lot of “queuing” (waiting in line), especially at Olympic venues for security checks. Whatever you do, don’t “jump the queue.”

TRAVEL TALK: The sidewalk is the pavement, the pavement is NOT the road.ACTUALLY ON THE ROAD: Roundabouts, hoods and trunks – OK … the last two

are not items of bizarre clothing under this heading.RANDOMLY SPEAKING: You will need a lift to go up in the world, and a fag is a

slang term for cigarette.EXPRESSING YOURSELF: Totally different words – Frightening to even think

of!!?DRESSING DOWN: Clothes and such can be touchy! Remember that suspenders

are braces, that are NOT something a dentist fits in your mouth . . . simple really.WEATHER OR NOT: Bring a brolly. If you need to know more – go to detailed link and educate:www.ujnews.com/recent-news/huh-us-and-british-english-to-collide-at-olympics/

UK To Issue Postage Stamps For Gold-Medal Winners

IN ADDITION to finding themselves on the winner’s podium, British Olympians could also turn up on postage.

Britain’s Royal Mail said last month it will issue stamps recognizing the achieve-ment of each British gold medal at the London Olympics.

Royal Mail said that stamps of gold-medal winners will be on sale by lunchtime the following day at 500 select post offices around the UK – the first time the company has ever issued next-day postage.

The designs will feature photographs of the Team GB athlete or team in action during their final, or another moment from the athlete’s journey to gold, such as the presentation of the medal on the podium.

Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene said the stamps will be “unique souvenirs of the Games, marking the great achieve-ments of our talented athletes.”

While the initiative marks the first time Royal Mail will issue stamps to mark Olympic victories, the company has long paid tribute to the Games. It issued its first Olympic Games stamps in 1948, with four stamps bearing the five Olympic rings.

At the 2008 Beijing Games, Team GB won 19 gold medals.Online:www.royalmail.com

Prince William, Kate To Welcome Olympic Torch

THE OLYMPIC torch will get a royal welcome at Buckingham Palace from Prince William and his wife, the former Kate Middleton.

Buckingham Palace says the young royals, joined by Prince Harry, will be on hand when three torchbearers carry the flame through the palace grounds on July 26 – the day before the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

The palace said last month that the

would be one of three over-age players allowed to feature in the squad if he is selected.

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder has expressed a desire to play at the London Games with his career in the England team effectively over after making 115 appear-ances – the most for an outfield player.

Britain’s Hallissey To Run The Olympics Marathon

CLAIRE HALLISSEY has been picked for Britain’s Olympic squad after setting a personal best time in last month’s London Marathon.

The 29-year-old Hallissey was the quickest Briton in the women’s race, finishing in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 44 seconds. She was picked for the Olympic marathon ahead of Jo Pavey, who sat out the London race.

Hallissey says “it’s a dream come true; it’s what you aspire to, getting onto an Olympic team.”

Paula Radcliffe and Mara Yamauchi had already been confirmed for the marathon.

Scott Overall and David Webb will be the only British men running the marathon. Overall ran the national qualifying time in Berlin last year and Webb finished in the top 20 at this year’s world champion-ships.

Queen will view the flame at Windsor Castle on July 10. The palace added that the 8,000-mile torch relay will pass through four royal residences on its way to the lighting of the cauldron at the Olympic Stadium in east London marking the start of the games.

The Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, will officially open the games on July 27.

Beckham Survives Latest British Olympic

Squad CutDAVID BECKHAM remains in contention for Britain’s Olympic football team after surviving the latest cut in the squad.

Manager Stuart Pearce has slashed his long list of 191 players down to 80 as he prepares Britain’s first Olympic football team since 1960. The final 23-man squad is expected to be named by June.

Beckham, who will be 37 next month,

Sebastian Coe Marking Olympic Countdown

SEBASTIAN COE is working on the final touches for the London Olympics that he hopes will make the difference between “a good and a great games.”

With the new venues in place and the £9.3bn project within budget, Coe and his London organizing committee are heading into the final stretch with plenty still to do but without any major crises to overcome.

A seven-year buildup to the Olympics has centered on the regeneration of a deprived industrial area in east London into the Olympic Park.

British Cycling To Lose Innovator After Olympics

CHRIS BOARDMAN says he will leave his position as British Cycling’s director of re-search and development after the London Olympics, leaving the country without the innovator behind much of its success in recent years.

The 1992 Olympic champion in the individual pursuit has played a vital role in developing equipment that helped Britain win eight gold medals at the Beijing Games in 2008 and should see the host nation dominate the cycling event this summer.

The 43-year-old Boardman says he is standing down from a role with the national governing body after nine years “because I don’t feel I will be able to do it justice” after the Olympics.

Boardman says “this job has been great but it demands your entire life to do it properly.”

England’s New CoachTHE LONG hunt for a successor to Martin Johnson as England’s chief coach has ended where it began: at Twickenham.

England went into the 2012 Six Nations after the most dismal of performances in last autumn’s World Cup looking desperately for someone – anyone – who could give the na-tional side some – any – kind of respectability. They turned to a home-grown coach to steady the ship, Stuart Lancaster, and buy time to track down some stellar international genius.

Quietly, the caretaker manager made the job his own. H e r e s t o r e d pride in wearing an England shirt, booted out the weary old faces, promoted youth and blooded a

new captain. For the first time in the Six Nations, England won all three of their away matches and came within a fraction of an inch of getting a draw against the Grand Slam winners, Wales. Dave Strettle’s last-gasp crossing of the line went to the video referee who just couldn’t work out if he exerted a down-ward movement on the ball.

Lancaster’s final game against Ire-land turned into a rout and cemented England’s runners-up position in the Six Nations table. Now he has 37 games before England run out to win the World Cup on their own soil.

Gatland’s Woes RWales start their summer with a home

game against the Barbarians on June 2. Then they head off to Australia for a three-Test tour. Their real concern is the health not of one of their players but of coach Warren Gatland.

Back home in New Zealand for a short break, he hopped up a ladder to give his family’s windows an Easter clean – and promptly fell off. In the process, he suf-fered multiple fractures to his right heel and a single fracture to the left one, requiring surgery and a painful period of recovery.

The Welsh Rugby Union has made contingency plans for assistant coach Rob Howley to take over the tour.

Henson’s Career Ended? ROne man who won’t be travelling with

Wales is Gavin Henson. He had fought his way back into contention for the World Cup before an injury sidelined him again. His career looks over though he is still barely 30. In the past two years he has moved around, leaving the Ospreys for the London Saracens, then heading to Toulon for a brief incident-packed stay and finally coming back to Wales and the Cardiff Blues.

Here the last act of the rugby play saw him drunk and disorderly on a Flybe plane coming back from a Glas-gow match. His antics earned him an immediate dismissal from the Blues and even more humiliating a six-month ban from Flybe. He is full of apology but it is hard to imagine any top rugby club taking him on.

Had Henson been a little better be-haved, he might have found himself on the Aussie tour since Jamie Roberts will miss the trip for a knee operation.

But one great centre has successfully returned after operation: Ireland’s Brian O’Driscoll. He aims to end his career touring Australia in June and July 2013 with the British and Irish Lions. It should be a fitting end to a stellar career.

Bubba Bursts The British Bubble

Lee Westwood got the Masters off to a great start at Augusta, Georgia, April 5-8, where four birdies on the opening nine aided him to lead the field after the first round by one stroke with a five under 67. For-mer British open winner Paul Lawrie was lurking

just two strokes back. By the second round, Jason Dufner and 1992 winner, Fred Cou-ples, led with five under pars, with Westwood and Rory McIIroy a stroke behind, and Paul Lawrie a stroke behind them. A surge from the field after the third round put Sweden’s Peter Hanson in the lead with a nine under par and Phil Mickelson, a stroke behind. Westwood dropped back to four under, Lawrie was three under while, McIIroy went ten off the lead. On the final round, Westwood kept close, but a 10 under 278 by Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen, saw the two go in a play-off with Watson claiming his first Masters and very first Major. Westwood finished two off the lead, Ian Poulter (-5) and Justin Rose (-6) were other Brits near the top.

Earlier, Tiger Woods captured his first PGA title since his women troubles, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Florida, late March. Chris Wood equaled the course record with a spectacular eight under 64, during the final round of the Sicilian Open at Ventura, April 1. But Thorbjorn Oleson of Denmark’s three under 69, was enough to force the Englishman into second place, one stroke distant from the Dane’s winning 15 under 273.

The Boat RaceThe 158th University Boat Race, April 7,

proved an anticlimactic contest this year when a series of incidents disturbed the usually well planned, River Thames event. Just after the Chiswick Steps, and halfway through the race a man in a wet suit was spot-ted swimming directly in front of the boats. Both Oxford and Cambridge crews brought their vessels to a stop and police arrested a wet intruder who turned out to be a political activist trying to make a point.

Officials decided to restart the race at the half-way mark, and did so, thirty minutes later. Oxford crept ahead, but a clash of oars, further disrupted the event and one of Oxford’s rowers ended with up a broken oar. Cambridge easily took advantage to win one of the strangest boat races in history. Pre-race favourites Oxford requested a re-row, but it was denied. At the finish, Oxford bow-man Dr Alex Woods, collapsed and was rushed to the hospital which led to many of the ending ceremonies being cancelled out of concern

for his well-being. Cambridge leads the contest 81-76. Con-cern continues to grow that each year the number of Britons on the two teams decreases. This year of the 16 rowers, only five were British born.

Cycling GoldBritain’s cycl ing squad

showed their talent off in Aus-tralia, and prospects for Olympic medals remain extremely likely. Britain’s womens pursuit team got the nation off to a gold medal at the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne, April 4-8. Joanna Rowsell, Dani King and Laura Trott took the honours, beating the Australian team in the final. Laura Trott would earn another gold by winning the omnium world title. A battered and bruised Victoria Pendleton, took gold in the sprint. She came off her bike in the semi-finals against the reigning world champion Anna Meares, where officials ruled the Australian had not stayed in her sprint lane, and the Briton went through to the final against Simone Krupeckaile. It was ruled that the Lithuanian had strayed from her sprint lane too, so the black and blue Briton, who had climbed back on her bike suffering extreme pain and discomfort was delighted to accept the gold medal. Sir Chris Hoy produced a fiery finish in the Keirin to take the gold, with Jason Kenny getting the bronze. Ben Swift took gold in the scratch race, silver in the points race, and another silver with Geraint Thomas in the Madison. Wendy Houvenaghel captured silver in the individual time trial, and Jess Varnish got a bronze in the women’s 500m time trial.

Ocean RacingThe Volvo Ocean race (formerly the

Whitbread round the world race) completed its fifth leg, when Puma Ocean Racing led the way into Itajai, Brazil, followed by Team Telefonica, after a very bumpy ride across the southern oceans from Auckland, New Zealand. Five of the six boats have suffered varying degrees of damage, and three had still not completed the fifth leg by mid-April.

Leg six sees them leave Brazil headed for Miami.

The Clipper 2011-12 race, boasting 450 adventurous souls crewing ten, sixty foot ocean racers on a marathon sea journey around the world led by a professional skipper on each boat, reached Oakland, California, after a long trip from Qingdao, China. The US coastguard went out to aid the Geraldton Western Australia, off the Californian coast early April, after a random wave destroyed steering and communication systems. Gold Coast Australia leads the fleet. Last month, they began stage seven of the journey, head-ing down to Panama City.

More SportTyson Fury retained his unbeaten record

in Belfast, April 14, where the former Brit-ish heavyweight champion stopped Irish veteran, Martin Rogan after five rounds. The Manchester man (18-0) put Rogan on the canvas in the third, and in the fourth a fierce body shot severely winded the Irishman. The 40-year-old Rogan went down again in the fifth, and his corner signaled enough was enough.… Britain’s World Triathlon Cham-pion Helen Jenkins, started the 2012 world series opener with a second place finish in Sydney, behind Aussie, Erin Densham… Fernando Alonso won the Malaysian Grand

Prix, late March, with Sergio Perez second and Lewis Hamilton third. Nico Rosberg not only scored his very first pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix, April 15, but also won the race. Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton followed him home. After three Formula One races, Lewis Hamilton leads the driver’s table with 45pts with Jenson Button just two points behind.

European SoccerChelsea, Britain’s last remaining club in

Europe, made it through the quarter-finals of the Champions League with two wins over Benfica. In Portugal, in front of a 65,000 plus crowd, Chelsea move confidently and were rewarded in the 75th minute when Salomon Kalou, scored the only goal of the match. At Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard hit a pen-alty in the 21st minute, and then Maxi Peirera was sent off six minutes before the break leaving the blues with a ten man opposition. Javi Garcia got one back five minutes before the end and Chelsea’s European dreams looked terribly uncertain until Raul Meireles scored the winner on the whistle for a 2-1 winning result. Other quarter-finals results saw Real Madrid oust Apoel Nicosia (a3-0, h5-3), Barcelona eliminated AC Milan (a0-0,h3-1) and Bayern Munich beat Marseille 2-0, home and away.

In the first leg of the semi-finals, April 17-18 & April 24-25, a Didier Drogba goal on half-time gave Chelsea a 1-0 advantage to take to Barcelona. In Germany, Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 2-1 in their first leg encounter. The Europa League semi-final first legs saw Atletico Madrid overwhelm Valen-cia 4-2, and Sporting Lisbon beat Atletico Bibao 2-1 in the first leg in Portugal.

Liverpool And Chelsea To Clash In FA Cup Final

The sixth round Spurs-Bolton replay at White Hart Lane, saw the hosts move into the semi-finals after a 3-1 victory. The game was goalless until the 74th minute when Ryan Nelson found the Bolton net, and Gareth Bale made it two, three minutes later. The final minute saw two goals, one by the Trot-ters’ Kevin Davies, while Louis Saha made it three for the Spurs. The other replay, saw Sunderland fall 2-0 at home to Everton. Nikica Jelavic scored after 24 minutes, while Sunderland’s David Vaughan found his own net in the 57th minute.

The semi-finals April 14-15, saw Liver-pool edge Everton 2-1, after a Andy Carroll goal three minutes from the end decided the tie. Nikica Jelavic put the toffees ahead in the 24th minute, while Luis Suarez leveled the game in the 62nd minute. Liverpool was forced to play third choice goal-keeper Brad Jones, after suspension and a series of injuries curtailed the more experience men.

Chelsea savaged Tottenham 5-1 in the other semi-final. Didier Drogba got the goal machine moving two minutes after the break, six minutes later Juan Mata made it two. Ramires made it three in the 77th minute and four minutes later Frank Lampard hit the net. Florent Malouda made it five in the closing minutes. Gareth Bale got one for Spurs in the 56th minute. Both semi-final games played at Wembley, drew over 85,000 plus crowds.

Chesterfield won the Johnstone Paint Trophy at Wembley, beating Swindon 2-0, where an attendance of 40,000-plus proved an exhilarating experience for both teams. An own goal by Swindon’s Olivier Risser gave Chesterfield the impetus, while Craig Westcarr added the second during stoppage time. Swindon, irked by a disallowed goal, continued to push forward.… Fleetwood Town won the Blue Square Conference Championship, and will play Division II soc-cer next year.

Celtic Scottish ChampionsUEFA have informed Rangers that because

of their uncertain financial situation the club will not be allowed to compete in Europe next season. Recent estimates put the club as be-ing £124m in debt, most of it owed in taxes. Complications were added to the takeover process when the SPL decided to vote on new rules regarding clubs entering bankruptcy. The main three consortiums want talks with the SPL before making their final bids. The old firm met at the Ibrox Stadium late March, and Rangers gathered a little sweetness in a season soured by financial problems by beating Celtic 3-2; having led 3-0 until the closing minutes of the game. The ref sent three players off, including Ranger’s US International Carlos Bocanegra, while Hoops’ Cha du Ri and Victor Wanyama were removed too. Sone Aluko broke the Celtic defense in the eleventh minute, Andy Little made it two in the 72nd minute, while Lee Wallace got a third, five minutes later. A Scott Brown penalty in the last minute put the Hoops on the card, and Thomas Rogne added a second in injury time. Celtic however, claimed their 46th Scottish Championship, April 7, taking revenge for the Scottish League Cup final defeat by Kilmarnock; this time slaughtering the Killies 6-0 on their own pitch. Charlie Mulgrew and Gary Hooper got two apiece, Glenn Loovens and Joe Ledley added to the merriment.

Scottish CupsHearts may have had problems mak-

ing the monthly payroll recently, but in the quarter-final Scottish Cup replay at Paisley against St Mirren, owner Vladimir Romanov, saw his problems lessen after a 2-0 away win. A goal in each half by Jamie Hamill and Rudi Skacel, did the trick.

The semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, April 14-15, witnessed a late goal by Leigh Griffiths give Hibernian a 2-1 victory over Aberdeen. Garry O’Connor scored in the third minute to put Hibs in front, while Rory Fallon hit back for the Dons in the 59th minute.… A contentious penalty in the closing minutes had Celtic in an uproar, as Craig Beattie put the ball away to give Hearts a stunning 2-1 win. Rudi Skacel put Hearts ahead two minutes after the break, while Gary Hooper got one for the Hoops three minutes from time. The Kilmarnock versus Hearts, Scottish Cup Final will be the first all Edinburgh final since 1896.

Falkirk won the Ramsden Challenge Cup for a record fourth time, at the Almondvale Stadium, April 1. Coming off a run of five games without a victory, the Bairns were hardly brimming with confidence. But an early goal, just eighty seconds into the match saw Darren Dods pierce the netting with a terrific header that ultimately gave Falkirk a 1-0 win over Hamilton Academicals.

Sporting PassingsJocky Wilson was part of a small band of

dart enthusiasts that ultimately put the world of professional darts on the corporate circuit and steadily enhanced the reputation that the in-door sport boasts today. He turned professional in 1979, and would win two BDO world championships during his sixteen year pro-career. He beat John Lowe 5-3, in 1982, and Eric Bristow 6-4, in 1989. In-credibly, his imbibing of prodigious amounts of beer during competition did not impede his talent at the oche. When the professional game split into two organisations, litigations and lawsuits led the Kirkaldy born Scot, to become increasing disillusioned with the game and his enthusiasm waned consider-ably. John “Jocky” Wilson was 62.

Born in Italy, but raised in an Italian restau-rant owned by his father in Cardiff, Giorgio Chinaglia thoughts soon turned to the game of soccer. Swansea Town signed him up, but his fiery personality soon brought about a parting of the ways. He moved back to his homeland, playing for Massese, before starting an illustrious career at Lazio in 1969, where he also made 14 appearances for Italy. He joined the Pele dominated New York Cosmos in 1976, scoring 242 goals, that rendered him a firm favourite with big apple fans. Giorgio Chinaglia was 65.

London MarathonThe Virgin London Marathon, April 22,

witnessed a Kenyan double as the East Africans once again made themselves very much at home at the 32nd running of this race. Wilson Kipsang led the field for the final seven miles and was close to a course record time with a winning time of 2hrs 04.44, former winner Kenyan, Martin Lel was second and Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia third. Guernsey runner Lee Merrien was the top British finisher in 17th with a time of 2hrs 13.41, with fellow Brits, John Beattie (19th) and Phil Anthony (20th).

Mary Keitany won the women’s race for the second year running with a time of 2hrs 18.37, followed by fellow Kenyans, Edna Kipagat and Pristah Jeptoo. Claire Hallis-sey, whose last marathon outing earned her a sixth place finish in the Chicago Marathon, ran an Olympic qualify time as the top Brit-ish finisher in eleventh place, and looks for a place on the British Olympic team. Brits, Freya Murray, Louise Damian and Sonia Samuels were top twenty finishers too. David Weir won the wheelchair race for the sixth time, while fellow Brit, Shelly Woods won the women’s wheelchair.

Arsenal – Mikel Arteta’s 25-yard strike and a smothering de-fense that prevented Manchester City from putting a shot on goal

highlighted a 1-0 victory at the Emirates. The Gunners hit the woodwork twice before Arteta won the match in the 87th minute. Robin Van Persie and Theo Walcott scored early goals two minutes apart and Yossi Benayoun connected in the second half of a 3-0 win at Wolverhampton.

Aston Villa – Chris Herd scored in the 10th minute at Liverpool, and Villa held out until an equalizer in the 89th minute left them with a 1-1

draw. The same score resulted in a home game with Stoke City; Andreas Weimann exchanged passes with Stephen Ireland to score before halftime but Villa conceded one in the second half.

Blackburn – Mauro Formica and Junior Hoilett scored four minutes before and after half-time, respectively, to boost

Rovers’ chances of staying up by beating Norwich, 2-0, at Ewood Park. Formica vol-leyed home a Morten Gamst Pedersen cross to open the scoring and Hoilett struck with a 25-yard screamer early in the second half.

Bolton – Wanderers fell behind in the sixth minute, equalized eight minutes later, and then fought off waves of Swansea City attacks to emerge with a 1-1 draw. Chris

Eagles tied the game when he put away a cross from Martin Petrov and nearly stole a victory late; in between, Bolton labored but managed to survive with a point.

Chelsea – An offside goal by Branislav Ivanovic and a stop-page-time rebound that caromed right to Juan Mata and off him into

the net earned Chelsea a 2-1 home victory over Wigan. Ivanovic scored on a ball played through to him by Raul Meireles and then blocked a shot on the goal line to preserve the 1-0 lead. Mata got the winner after a ferocious volley by Fernando Torres ricocheted off the crossbar onto his foot.

Everton – Two late goals within two minutes brought Ever-ton back from a 4-2 deficit to tie Manchester United, 4-4, in one

of the season’s most spectacular matches. Nikica Jelavic’s second goal of the game narrowed the gap to 4-3, and in the 85th minute Steven Piernaar blasted in the equal-izer. Marouane Fellaini scored the other goal for Everton as it picked up its 10th point of a possible 12.

Fulham – American Cl int Dempsey struck twice and took his season tally to 21 goals as Ful-ham belted Bolton, 3-0. Dempsey

connected with a free kick and a firm header before Mahamadou Diarra tacked on a third goal in the late stages. Philipe Senderos chose a dramatic moment to score his first goal for the club; his tally in the 89th minute propelled the Cottagers past Wigan Athletic, 2-1, in a match marred by yet another goal-line controversy. Pavel Pogrebnyak scored in the 58th minute and five minutes later hit a shot off the bottom of the crossbar that appeared to land beyond the goal line, but the officials let play continue.

Liverpool – Two shots off the woodwork and a denied penalty-kick claim left Liverpool with their first home loss to West Bromwich Albion in 45 years,

1-0, and just one win in the last 12 matches. That victory came at Blackburn, when Andy Carroll got his head to a Daniel Agger flick and scored in stoppage time for a 3-2 victory that also featured two goals in three minutes by Maxi Rodriguez.

Manchester City – Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri scored on either side of halftime in a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton that pulled

City within three points of first-place Man-chester United with three matches to play. The beleaguered Carlos Tevez celebrated a second consecutive start by nailing a hat trick in a 6-1 rout of Norwich.

Manchester United – A 4-2 lead at home against Everton evaporated and left the two goals scored by Wayne Rooney

and single strikes from Danny Welbeck and Nani sufficient only for a point in a 4-4 draw. Rooney’s goals took his United total to 180 and this season’s tally to 33, one short of his personal record. The same combination of scorers and totals totted up a 4-0 rout of Aston Villa.

Newcastle – A Man of the Month performance by Yohan Cabaye propelled the Magpies to a 3-0 thumping of Stoke City that tightened their hold on

fourth place and a Champions League spot. Cabaye scored two goals and set up the third for Papiss Cisse, who upped his take to 11 goals in 10 games. Cabaye’s goals in the 14th and 57th minutes helped Newcastle claim its sixth successive league victor

Norwich City – Jonny Howson equalised just before half-time with his first goal for the club and Grant Holt’s goal with 14 minutes later

secured the Canaries a 2-2 draw against Everton. Holt’s goal, his 13th league goal of the season, ranks behind only Wayne Rooney among Englishmen in the Premier League. Wesley Hoolahan crossed for Howson to score the opener, and Holt capitalized when a fumbled shot bounced straight back to Aaron Wilbraham, who squared the ball for him to tuck away.

Queen’s Park Rangers – Ex-Spur Adel Taarabt downed his former club, 1-0, with a superb free kick and later departed with

his second caution to move QPR three points clear of the relegation zone with three games remaining. Taarabt curled home a 25-yard free kick in the 24th minute, and in the second half added to his hot-tempered reputation by receiving a second yellow card for kicking the ball away. Despite his antics, QPR held on to win its fourth consecutive home game.

Stoke City – Six saves by keeper Asmir Begovic were only of statistical interest in a 3-0 Potters’ loss at Newcastle. They managed

only eight shots and put zero on goal; Peter Crouch headed down Marc Wilson’s long ball for Jonathan Walters to volley over in the 10th minute, and after they fell behind four minutes later they never caught up.

Sunderland – The Black Cats were shut out in four straight games after ending March by drawing at Manchester City,

3-3. Three of those games – against Totten-ham, Wolverhampton, and Aston Villa – ended goalless; in the other Sunderland were embar-rassed, 4-0, at Everton. Manager Martin O’Neill was greeted by booing fans at Villa, which he left at the start of the 2010-11 season after leading them to three top-six finishes.

Swansea City – A great strike by Scott Sinclair got the Swans on top 1-0 at Bolton in the sixth minute but despite a barrage of

shots they settled for a 1-1 draw. Sinclair collected the ball on the left flank and glided along the edge of the penalty area to swerve a shot into the top corner. A Danny Graham thunderbolt against the crossbar was among the many near-misses.

Tottenham Hotspur – A 1-0 loss at Queen’s Park Rangers dropped Spurs out of the top quartet for the first time since November. Stinging shots by Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart were among the 20

attempts launched at goal in vain; the defeat left Spurs with just one win in their last nine league matches.

West Bromwich Albion – Roy Hodgson got some measure of revenge against the club that dis-missed him 16 months ago as West

Brom won at Anfield for the first time in 45 years, 1-0, with a Peter Odemwingie goal in the 75th minute.

Wigan Athletic – Emmerson Boyce equalized to bring the Latics even with Fulham, 1-1, and despite the officials electing

not to award Fulham a goal on a shot that appeared to cross the goal line, the Latics conceded a goal in the 89th minute that beat them, 2-1. Victories over Arsenal and Manchester United lifted them out of the relegation zone heading into the final few weeks of play. Franco Di Santo fired them in front of Arsenal in the seventh minute and Jordi Gomez doubled their lead inside 90 seconds en route to a 2-1 win. Shaun Maloney’s goal five minutes after halftime atoned for a Victor Moses goal strangely disallowed, though Maloney’s goal came from a wrongly-awarded corner kick.

Wolverhampton – A 2-0 home loss to Manchester City left Wolves without any hope of escaping relegation. Their three-

year stint in the top flight ended after Terry Connor replaced the sacked Mick McCarthy in February but under him Wolves garnered just two points from 10 games. They’d briefly toppled the table by collecting seven points from the opening three games, but then man-aged only 16 points from 32 matches.

Rampant Celtic Wins Scottish Title In Style

CELTIC clinched the Scottish Premier League title in style last month, thrashing Kilmarnock 6-0 to reclaim the champion-ship from fierce rival Rangers with a month of the season remaining.

Neil Lennon’s side needed a point at Rugby Park to claim a first title since 2008 and 43rd overall. A double from Charlie Mulgrew and other first-half goals by Glenn Loovens and Gary Hooper ensured celebrations could start before halftime.

Goal-Line Technology In FIFA July Vote

By Rob HarrisTHE FINAL phase of goal-line technology tests will begin later this month before football’s rule-makers make a definitive decision in July, FIFA announced last month after another high-profile contro-versy.

Chelsea reached the FA Cup final with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham, with replays indicating that Juan Mata’s shot never crossed the line for Chelsea’s sec-ond goal.

The International Football Association Board, the game’s rule-making body, last month approved two systems to go into a second round of testing in match scenarios before either can be sanctioned for use in competitive fixtures at a meet-ing on July 2.

SPEEDIFAB must be satisfied with the speed

and accuracy of Hawk-Eye or GoalRef before high-tech aids for referees can be deployed in football for the first time.

Sony Corp’s Hawk-Eye is a camera-based ball-tracking system successfully deployed in tennis and cricket. GoalRef, owned by a German-Danish company, uses a magnetic field with a special ball.

Both systems send a signal within a second of the ball crossing the line to the referee, who will retain the power to make the final call.

FIFA’s support for goal-line technology had wavered until a high-profile blunder at the 2010 World Cup involving England convinced President Sepp Blatter that any further embarrassments had to be avoided at major tournaments.

READYA shot by Chelsea’s Frank Lampard in

a game against Germany at the World Cup in South Africa bounced off the crossbar and landed beyond the goal line but did not count as England was knocked out of the competition.

FIFA is hopeful one of the systems will be ready for use at the Club World Cup in December in Japan, but the Premier League hopes it could fast-track technol-ogy into its 20 grounds before the new season starts in July.

IFAB is comprised of the four British associations plus four FIFA delegates, with six votes required to approve a change to the rules.

American Cricket In CourtThe administrative dysfunctionality of US

Cricket came to a San Jose court room last month, where Ram Varadarajan and his co-plaintiff the California Cricket Academy, challenged the elimination of some 32 cricket leagues across the country from the election process of the United States of America Cricket Association. The president of the USACA, Gladstone Dainty, has alleg-

edly denied voting rights to State and local cricket associations that do not support his presidency contends Varadarajan. Under Dainty, the USACA has twice been suspended by the ICC since 2005, mainly for a lack of transparency in the way the Association is run, and they have not received any ICC fund-ing in 2012. Many of the 2011-12 scheduled US competitions were not played, and an ICC sponsored event hosted by the USACA for regional nations due to be played this month was cancelled. Dainty removed former CEO Don Lockerby, over a year ago and he has not been replaced. Then recently, he sus-pended secretary John Aaron. Opponents of Gladstone Dainty, received no assistance from the Judge however, who refused to get involved and instructed the USACA to sort its own problems out. Dainty was voted back in as were most incumbents in the mid-April elections. The ICC is not happy that most of its funding ends up in litigation costs, when most of these problems could be solved face to face in committee, and a third suspension could be in the offing.

Murray In Final, Davis Cup Disaster For Britain

Andy Murray reached the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, April 1, after getting a walkover in the semi-finals when Rafael Nadal pulled out with an injury. In the final, the Scot got off to a slow start against old rival Novak Djokovic, which he never recovered from. The Serbian earned his third Ericsson title with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), victory, putting him in an 8-5 lead over Murray in career encounters. Earlier, the Scot had beaten Milos Raonic of Canada, Alejandro Falla of Colombia and Serbian, Janko Tipsarovic. Murray had won here in 2009.

Andy Murray’s appearance at the Ericsson Open meant he was not available for Britain’s Davis Cup encounter with Belgium, at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow, April 5-7. The Murray-less team got off to a disappointing start with Josh Woodall and Dan Evans los-ing their singles on the first day of competi-tion. Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins beat Ruben Bemelmans and David Goffin 4-6, 7-5, 6-3,6-4, on the second day doubles schedule. Britain lost the remaining third day singles to lose the match 4-1.

Glory & Tragedy At AintreeNeptune Collonges (33-1) won the clos-

est Grand National finish in the race’s history, April 14, where a photo-finish decided that Sunnihillboy (16-1) had been beaten by a nose. Collonges, becomes the first grey to win the National since Nicolas Silver in 1961. Trained by Paul Nicholls, ridden by Daryl Jacobs and owned by John Hales the close run in had crowds on their feet.

Five lengths distant in third was Seabass (8-1jf) ridden by Kate Walsh, who made history by attaining the highest finish ever for a women in this race. Cappa Bleu (16-1) was fourth. The winner’s purse was £547,268. Only 15 finished from the original 40 starters.

Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Synchro-nised (10-1), seeking an extra-ordinary double came to grief at Becher’s Brook, unseated her jockey, and suffered a fatal injury after running loose and taking a few jumps jockeyless. Van Persie Scoops Player Of Year Award In England

ARSENAL striker Robin van Persie has been rewarded for his stunning goalscoring exploits in the Premier League by being voted the player of the season by his peers.

The Netherlands international received the Professional Footballers’ Association award on Sunday after grabbing 27 goals to lead the scoring charts in England’s top division with three rounds of fixtures remaining.

Van Persie says “if other people are saying it, it is special, but it is even more special if your opponents are saying it.”

In a rare injury-free season, Van Persie has carried Arsenal on his own at times after the team’s poor start to its league campaign, scoring 34 goals in all competitions.

Tottenham right back Kyle Walker won the the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Rangers Manager Talks To US Bidder For Club

RANGERS manager Ally McCoist has held talks with the American businessman trying to buy the financially stricken Scottish club, which is feared to have debts exceeding $200m.

Bill Miller, the chairman of a towing and recovery equipment company, is one of three bidders being considered by the administra-tors tasked with saving the 140-year-old Glasgow club, which is in bankruptcy protection.

Walcott Out For Rest Of Season, Fit For Euro 2012

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger says Theo Walcott is unlikely to play again this season after the winger injured his left

hamstring in last month’s 0-0 draw against Chelsea, but the England winger should be fit for the European Championship.

Wenger expects Walcott to be sidelined for three weeks and says “I don’t think he will be able to play again this season.”

England’s first game at Euro 2012 is against France on June 11.

Arsenal, which is third in the standings, has three league matches remaining as it attempts to seal a place in next season’s Champions League.

Reading Returning To Prem After Four Year Absence

READING secured promotion to the Premier League after a four-year period with two games to spare in the second tier.

The League Championship leaders en-sured they would finish in the top two by beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 last month as third-place West Ham was held to a 1-1 draw at Bristol City.

Southampton is poised to join Reading in the Premier League, with the second-place side going five points clear of West Ham by beating Peterborough 3-1.

Promotion seals a remarkable turnaround for Reading, which was second to last in the standings four games into the season.

Brian McDermott’s side was still 11 points off the top in January, but they have amassed 46 points from a possible 51 since then to secure its return to the topflight.

Hearts Stun Celtic To Reach Scottish Cup Final

HEARTS SCORED an injury-time penalty to upset Celtic 2-1 April 15 and set up a meeting with Edinburgh rival Hibernian in the Scottish Cup final.

Substitite Craig Beattie, a former Celtic player, converted a spot kick that was awarded after Joe Ledley blocked a shot from Marius Zaliuskas with his arm.

ENGLAND will play two traditional mid-week matches during its three-test tour to South Africa in June.

The first will be against the SA Barbar-ians South in Kimberley on Wednesday, June 13, between the first and second tests, followed by a SA Barbarians North team in Potchefstroom six days later.

“This gives us the opportunity to take international rugby away from the major metropolitan centers,” South Africa Rugby Union chief executive Jurie Roux said.

England’s tour is the first three-test visit to South Africa since New Zealand’s in 1996.

Runners Practice With Unlit Olympic TorchMAKE WAY for the torch. (But the flame will come later.)

A test of the Olympic torch run is under way Friday from Leicester to Peterborough in eastern England.

London Olympic officials are conduct-ing a full dress rehearsal of the run to test timings, traffic and security issues as the convoy moves along.

Some 122 volunteers are running with the torch April 20, but it won’t be lit. The

flame only comes when the actual torch relay starts from Land’s End in Cornwall this month.

The real Olympic torch relay will take place for 70 days and will involve 8,000 torchbearers. It will travel throughout Brit-ain as well as making a stop in Dublin.

London organizers hope the relay will build excitement ahead of the games, which take place from July 27-August 12.

LIVERPOOL will open their tour with a friendly against Major League Soccer side Toronto FC on July 21. The EPL team has also scheduled matches against Italian side Roma in Boston on July 25 and English rival Tottenham in Baltimore three days later as it attempts to increase its exposure across the Atlantic.

The game against Toronto at the Rogers Center, will form part of the World Football Challenge.

ASTON VILLA will kick off their 2012 US summer tour with a friendly against Philadelphia Union at PPL Park on July 18, 2012. Following that will play a game against Chicago Fire on July 21 at Toyota Park in the Windy City. The tour will then conclude with a friendly against Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field on July 24.

CHELSEA FC will be the opponents in the 2012 MLS All-Star Game on July 25 at PPL Park in Philadelphia.

Chelsea’s schedule of games for their 2012 summer tour of the United States includes: the Seattle Sounders on July 18; MLS All-Star Game, in Chester, PA on July 25; and AC Milan in Landover, MD on July 28. Chelsea may also play Celtic in NY but that has yet to be confirmed.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR will play the opening match of their US summer tour on July 24, with a friendly against LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center in southern California. The Spurs will play Liverpool on July 28 in Baltimore. On July 31 they will play New York Red Bulls at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. The match will be part of a New York Invitational Cup.

English Teams Touring The US This Summer Chelsea Beat Barca, Advance To CL Final

CHELSEA surprised everyone last month knocking Barcelona out of the Champions League in the semi-final.

The second-leg at the Nou Camp took very much the same pattern of the first leg the previous week, with the Spanish club having 80 percent of possession. And, with the London team having the added handicap of losing two centre backs in the first half, things looked grim when the Spaniards took a 2-0 lead.

Following Cahill going off with an injury, the task became more dif-ficult for Chelsea when captain John Terry was sent off in the 37th minute for putting his knee into the back of Alexis Sanchez, and the captain will now miss the final – along with three other regular players.

Amazingly, the London team man-

aged to grind out a 2-2 draw to elimi-nate the holders 3-2 on aggregate to the final.

“For many teams it would be a killer,” Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech said. “But we showed great strength of mind and character not to lie down.”

While the Premier League form has still not recovered, Chelsea is through to an FA Cup final against Liverpool and now on course for the cup double.

“To be in the Champions League final, obviously, is a dream come true for all the Chelsea players,” striker Fernando Torres said. “It’s the second Champions League final for Chelsea. Everyone knows what happened in the past with the penalty shoot-out.

Torres scored in the last minute of injury time to secure the 2-2 draw.
