Firstly, I would like to say welcome to Brunel and if you’re a returning student, welcome back. I hope you have had a blissful summer and are ready for this new academic year.

What you see before you is the UBS Union guide. The guide gives you informati on on what the Union is, what acti viti es and campaigns we provide and how to get involved. You will hear a lot of people telling you to get involved this year- I will encourage you to listen to them; by getti ng involved you can make yourself more employable as well as enjoy a more rounded university experience (it can’t all be about study!).

This year the University will be running a new initi ati ve for all newly registered students called the HEAR (Higher Educati on Achievement Record). This means that the extra-Curricula acti viti es* you undertake within the Union AND around the University will be included in a fi nal transcript when you graduate for your employer to see. This is massive for your employability aft er university, so I encourage you all to please get involved in something*.

Finally, I hope this guide helps you to further your knowledge of the Students’ Union and also helps you to decide what you would like to get involved in- you may not want to read it all at one sitti ng, but please try and fi nd ti me to come back to it, there’s plenty to soak up.

There are many skills to pick up whilst in University, and we at UBS are proud and eager to provide opportuniti es to develop those skills, whilst you also enjoy the acti viti es we have to off er. We truly hope you choose to get involved in order to further yourself and add to the community.

If you need anything, advice on what to get involved in or just want a friendly chat, email me at: [email protected]

Here to help, Promise (President)

BE A STUDENT REPHave you got what it takes to stand up for yourself and others on your course? Don’t worry if the answer is no, not everyone has, but if you think you can then we need to hear from you. Visit our website for more informati on on how to nominate yourself - www.brunelstudents.com/reps.

KNOW YOUR REPStudent Reps are nominated and elected by the students on their course to represent their opinions to the staff in their school. It’s important that you know who your Student Rep is and how to contact them.

There should be a Course Rep for every level of every course at Brunel. They act as the link between you and the people who run your course, representi ng your views on what’s good and bad about your course. Each school has it’s own School Rep, they’re the next step up in the chain. School Reps are responsible for all of the Course Reps in their school. Finally there are Senior Reps, these guys are responsible for managing the Rep system in their school.
