Wisconsin Public School Observance Days
Feb. 12 - Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday Elected president in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was commander-
in-chief during the Civil War. In 1863, he signed the Emanci-
pation Proclamation, which declared that slaves held in the re-
bellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." Four
months before his assassination, the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution, which abolished slavery, was adopted. Originally part of court statutes to observe these days and was enacted for the schools on June 27, 1923, from the
1923 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 307, section 20.
Feb. 15 - Susan B. Anthony’s Birthday
Susan B. Anthony, an early suffragist, organized campaigns
across the United States advocating the rights of women to
vote, to get an education, and to own property. In 1872, she

her action. In 1920, 14 years after her death, the 19th Amend-
ment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote was
ratified by three-fourths of the states and adopted. Enacted April 15, 1976, from the 1975 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 204.
Feb. 22 - George Washington's Birthday
George Washington is honored for his efforts to create
a new nation dedicated to the rights of the people. He was com-
mander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary
War. In 1789, he was inaugurated as the first president of the
United States. Originally part of court statutes to observe these days and was enacted for the schools on June 27, 1923, from the 1923 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 307, section 20.

Influenza
Flu season is upon us and confirmed cases of influenza are on the rise in our area. In order to
minimize occurrence within the school, we ask that
you:
go over proper hand washing techniques with your children and remind them to wash their hands
frequently. remind them to cover their cough by coughing into
their elbow or into the inside of their shirt.
Signs and symptoms of influenza include fever (over
100 degrees F), severe headache, muscle and body
aches, exhaustion and dry cough. Children may have
additional symptoms that are rare in adults such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Please be sure to keep your children home if they are
experiencing any of these symptoms and follow school
guidelines when getting students back to school after
illness. Thank you for your help! Questions? Contact
the school nurse, Linda Rasmussen at 878-2015, ext.
2021.
