Message from Our President Another year for the UCCA is coming to a close. Our
annual meeting is coming up on May 18, 2013. UCCA
members and all who are interested in our cemeteries
are encouraged to join us and make plans for another
successful year.
Thanks to the memberships, donations of funds and
volunteer time we have been able to keep a number of
our historic cemeteries maintained. Without this they
would be left neglected.
Throughout the year we have many questions about
our cemeteries. Often someone would like to locate a
cemetery or need a contact person for a cemetery.
However lately many questions concern devastation or
damage problems or the right to access a cemetery.
Many issues with our cemeteries go further than just
cleaning and maintaining cemeteries. Several of our
members have been working with The East Tennessee
Preservation Alliance Cemetery Task Force in an effort
to initiate ways to overcome present and future issues
concerning cemeteries.
Your continued support is gratefully appreciated as we
work together as members and supporters of the Union
County Cemeteries Association. Ellen L. Perry, UCCA President

A marker has been obtained for the grave site of Matthew M. Patton. He served in the 50th VA. INF,
CSA. A ceremony by the Sons of the Confederacy is tentatively planned for July 13, 2013. The stone
was set by members of the UCCA on April 25, 2013. Dan was the son of Samuel & Polly Patton. He was
laid to rest in the New Mossy Springs Cemetery between his two wives. All three are buried in
unmarked graves.
Information on Matthew M. Patton was supplied by Don Sanford and Dan's great- great granddaughter,
Barbara Patton Nivison.
Partnering with Keep Union County Beautiful
The UCCA will partner with Keep Union County Beautiful in the cleaning of one of our historic
cemeteries. A cleaning of the L.O. Johnson Cemetery is planned for May 18th. Participating in
this cleanup will be representatives from KUCB and the UCCA along with a number of boy scouts and
4-H Club members. Members of the UCCA will help KUCB with litter clean-up on one of our roadways.
Certificates of Appreciation
It is again time for the Union County Cemeteries Association to express our
appreciation to some very special people who have contributed to the preservation of our cemeteries and our Union County
history. Recipients are: Margaret Freemon for her contributions
making the cleaning of Isaac Shelby Cemetery possible. Margaret is responsible for the purchasing of headstones and signs needed for some of
her ancestral cemeteries; Judson Palmer for maintenance of the historic Irwin Cemetery and other contributions toward preserving our County's
heritage; Harold Tolliver for maintenance of Bunk Weaver Cemetery and work on the preservation of Oak Grove School. Certificates will be presented
at our Annual Meeting on May 18, 2013. In addition to these three we are grateful to all who have made donations,
volunteered their time and contributed in any way to help us in continuing our work.

A Report on Cemetery Maintenance Work was done on Hubbs-Hickle Cemetery using hired help. This was paid for out of money designated for this cemetery from 2001 fundraiser funds. Ambros Sharp Cemetery is kept up with funds donated by descendents and with help hired by the UCCA. Margaret Freemon's generous donations in memory of her Carr and Perry ancestors provides for paid maintenance on Isaac Shelby Cemetery. Some of the other cemeteries maintained with UCCA funding of hired help or with volunteer work include Sallings, Waggoner, Romines, Poor Farm, Welch-Carroll, McBee Family, Bolinger, Lost Creek and Rabbit Town.
Use our Website to Search Cemeteries Our website contains many Union County Cemeteries, Chuck Swan Wildlife Management Area Cemeteries and a number of cemeteries in surrounding counties. (Most of these have links to Find-A-Grave.) Our website also has a list of Union County cemeteries with their locations. This is a good resource when doing research. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/tn/county/union2/
It is time for memberships to be paid for the year of June 1, 2013-May 31, 2014. A convenient form is on the back of this newsletter for renewals or new members. Be sure to include your cemeteries of particular interest on the form.
