What is UAS

• UAV vs UAS??

• Uninhabited - not unmanned

• Aerial – defies gravity for a period of time

• System

– Platform: Aircraft

– Payload: Currently in NZ we have:

• Day video

• Night video (FLIR)

• Day Still

– Ground Control station

– Crew, training SOP’s etc

• Types

– Categories Data link (km) Endurance (hours) Max. Altitude (m)

– Micro < 10 1 250

– Mini < 10 < 2 250

– Close Range 10-30 2-4 3,000

What UAS exists today

• Australia

– SKYLARK

• Range: 100km, flew from

Australia to Canada

• Endurance: 20 hr

What UAS can do and cant do

• Can

– Be used to refine human tasks, ie search large areas and vector

manned assets to targets

– Cost effective

– Prioritised and contracted

– Used in remote locations with minimal support

– Provide real time link to HQ

– Be used by SAR staff with minimal training

• Cant

– Will never replace manned aircraft, compliment at best

– Should do those jobs that are technically risky: Dull, Dirty, dangerous

– Fly in most parts of NZ without CAA approval

Issues you will face with UAS

• Airspace

• ATS Positive Control

• Legal / Moral Issues with Manned flight

• No Sense and avoid – yet

• Hard to see by other A/C

• Bigger than a bird-strike

• No transponder in miniature UAVs

• Uncontrolled airspace the big problem

• No human on board – ethics

• Misconceptions / Bias

• Cost

• Training
