1.1List legislation relating to health and safetyYou might think that health and safety and the uniformed services are not something that easily fit together. Health and safety legislation does not always apply within the armed services as there is the opportunity to be exempt under certain circumstances.

Some health and safety legislation has been slightly amended to match the realities of work in the uniformed services, such as in the police.

The important thing is that police officers, for example, are classed by law as being employees at work when they are on duty.

There are cases, like in the fire service, when health and safety is a key part of their operational work. Firefighters are sent into dangerous situations every time they go out.

4.1Identify the legislation related to the control of hazardous substancesThe Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) (2002) requires that all employers should control substances that are hazardous to health. In order to do this the idea is to reduce the exposure in the first place:

• this means finding out what the health hazards are• undertake a risk assessment on how to prevent harm to health• provide control measures to reduce harm to health• ensuring that these measures are used• providing information and training• carrying out health monitoring• planning for emergencies.

Sometimes substances are easily recognisable as being harmful, such as dust or paint. But many other substances can be equally as harmful.

Although COSHH covers many things, it does not cover radioactive substances, asbestos or lead as these highly dangerous materials have their own regulations.
