The Master’s MuseArtists’ Dogs and CatsMychael Barratt

Forty famous paintings are given the Mychael Barratt treatment – by imposing a canine or feline into the artwork. The iconic images chosen are always those where the animal can be cleverly interwoven - Dali’s The Persistence of Memory, where melted clocks are morphed into leggy, slumbering pets; a Jack Russell finds Tracey Emin’s Unmade Bed a cosy place for a kip; ghostly feline footprints cross Yves Klein’s pitch perfect blue print.

Mychael Barratt was born in Toronto, Canada and has been living and working in London since 1984. He studied at Central St Martins College of Art and in 2013 was elected President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

Mosaics – Design and InspirationMartin Cheek

Mosaics Design and Inspiration is a visual inspiration sourcebook by internationally acclaimed mosaic artist Martin Cheek. Written in response to requests from both newly-taught and established mosaic artists, it is full of invaluable expert advice about the creative process involved in making mosaics – from initial design work to the finished piece. Many of the mosaics took several months to complete and have never been published before.

This title is the seventh publication by Martin Cheek, who trained in graphic design in 1981 before specialising in illustration and puppet design. He is regularly commissioned by both private and corporate clients as well as by museums. His work also appears in leading national magazines and newspapers as well as on television.

#RoughsketchesRemi Rough

#Roughsketches is a collection of Remi Rough’s drawings and sketches from a diverse catalogue of work spanning the last two decades. The book demonstrates the gradual progression in Remi’s works from graffiti lettering to the abstractions they have now become, with a focus on the interplay between geometry, line and space. Most of the featured sketches are in black and white, as Remi often chooses to strip away all the unnecessary peripheral parts of graffiti while drawing. This enables him to focus on the development of his style and ideas for paintings and large-scale mural projects.

Remi Rough has been making images for more than a quarter of a century. His art began on walls and trains in south London in 1984; today it has been exhibited in cities such as Miami, Berlin and New York. As part of the collective Agents of Change, Remi has also been re-imagining public spaces, from an abandoned ‘ghost village’ in Scotland, to the exterior of the Megaro Hotel in the centre of London.

Oil Paint and Grease Paint

Laura Knight

Laura Knight is described by art historians as the most important female artist of 20th-century Britain. In 1929 she was made a Dame, and in 1936 became one of the few female artists to be elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

She captured in oils and watercolours the world of theatre and ballet, became an official war artist during WWII, and then was sent to Nuremburg to record the trials in paint. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. This is a republication of her autobiography, originally written in 1936, with 40 full colour images.

Since they were created Earls of Derby in 1485, the Stanleys – a great Lancastrian family, whose seat, Knowsley Hall, is near Liverpool – have been significant in the life of the nation as patrons and collectors, sportsmen and politicians. These absorbing essays by a distinguished cast of contributors – including historian David Starkey on Lady Margaret Beaufort, the first Countess of Derby, and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough on Edward Lear’s stay at Knowsley – cover key facets of the family’s diverse achievements.

Lucky to be an ArtistUnity Spencer

There is a famous portrait by Stanley Spencer of his wife and their daughter and her dolls, completed in 1937 called Hilda, Unity and Dolls. Both mother and child are very serious and unsmiling; the dolls black-eyed and seemingly empty. Painted in the aftermath of the disastrous split between Spencer and his wife, the painting reflects the ruin and emptiness that awaited him and Hilda’s subsequent mental breakdown.

Following in the footsteps of her father, Unity Spencer became an accomplished artist in her own right. In this autobiography she writes about her unconventional childhood, the turbulent relationship with the father of her beloved son John, and her relationship with her father. She has exhibited widely and still teaches painting and printmaking.

Coming in Spring 2016: Looking to Heaven, Volume 1 of Stanley Spencer’s autobiography.

Founded in 1815, the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) is widely regarded as the most prestigious yacht club in the world. Its clubhouse, Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight was built by Henry VIII in 1539. It overlooks the waters of the Solent and the start line of many celebrated yacht races.

Since 1826 the RYS has held an annual regatta, which became known as Cowes Week. Its association with the Royal Navy began early and Nelson’s captain at Trafalgar, Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, headed the long list of distinguished naval members. Today its 600 members all have an active interest in promoting yachting in all its forms, from cadet training to the America’s Cup. The club’s patron is Queen Elizabeth II and the club’s admiral is Prince Philip.

In 2015, the Royal Yacht Squadron celebrates its bicentenary. The anniversary book, Making Waves: The 200 Year History of the Royal Yacht Squadron, by the historian Alex Martin and with a foreword by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, is being published in late 2015 to mark this celebration.

A History of Kitchen Gardening

Susan Campbell

This book is a significantly revised version of the much acclaimed fiction title Charleston Kedding: A History of Kitchen Gardening published in 1996. In this edition, the author has been able to disclose her main source and the book is all the better for being able to turn on the true story of the kitchen garden at Pyewell Park in Hampshire and its team of gardeners. The amazing secrets of the hotbed, the back-sheds and the pineapple frames are laid bare in this extraordinary and delightfully written account of the ups and downs of the kitchen garden.

Sir Winston Churchill His Life and Paintings

David Coombs with Minnie Churchill

In 1915, Churchill was forced to resign from the wartime British government. He was 40 years old and thought his political career was finished. He became deeply depressed, but was rescued during a family holiday by his discovery of the ‘muse of painting’. Churchill’s fascination with painting continued until his last years, and for the first time, this book tells the story of his life through his own pictures.

Editor: Hilary DiaperMaurice de Sausmarez: Selected Works

An outspoken critic of post-war art education, Maurice de Sausmarez was integral to the formation of the national Art Diploma in the early 1960s, defining standards of teaching for a subject that he loved. De Sausmarez set up the Department of Fine Art at the University of Leeds where he was Head, later he also became Head of Fine Art at Hornsey College of art, and then Principal of the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting in London where he is cited by former pupil Sir James Dyson to be a major influence on his early industrial design career. He was also an artist and an art critic, and his writings show a shrewd understanding and knowledge of his passion.

In 1964, he wrote Basic Design: the Dynamics of Visual Form, a book that has never been out of print, and has cemented de Sausmarez’s name within the education of generations of visual arts students, even into the 21st Century.

This new book brings together his most important writings and reviews into a fascinating and insightful collection.

This history of 177 Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers details from their formation on the Western Front in 1915 to the disbandment of the Company after the war. The first history covering a tunnelling company published since the 1920s, it looks at the men of all ranks who made up the Company, where they were from and what roles they played.

The book focuses heavily on the daily struggle the Company faced underground under constant mine threat from the Germans, analyses the tunnel systems and dugouts they constructed, accompanied by colour plans and photographs. The book contains first-hand accounts of fighting the Germans underground and explains what the Sappers’ role was in the greater scheme of the war.

Iain McHenry served 17 years in the army with the Royal Military Police in Germany, Northern Ireland, UK, Norway, Sardinia, Egypt, Bosnia, Kosovo, Canada, Sierra Leone and Belgium. He currently lives in Ypres and works as a Great War historian, researcher and guide specialising in the history of the Western Front and the Palestine Campaign during the conflict. Published to coincide with the centennary of the formation of the Company.

Poppyganda

The poppy is the enduring symbol of the First World War, an object that embodies a hundred years of attitudes towards the world’s first great conflict. Yet the flower’s association with warfare pre-dates 1914 and its legacy continues today. An intensely powerful object, it has been appropriated by many, employed to justify war and to highlight its futility.

All objects have a biography and the poppy’s is one as galant as any from the war. Yet as we enter a world dominated by social media and 24hr news broadcasts, the poppy is again becoming politicised, publicised, diminished and reified. This is the story of how the modern relationships between man and nature, war and politics, and the media and technology are writing another chapter in the story of this most iconic of flowers.

Everybody in the 21st century has a pet subject. With the rise of the internet it’s easier to share our passion – vintage collectors have benefited greatly from this.Vintage car and motorcycle enthusiasts experience the essence of ‘time travel’ when riding in or on a vehicle from 30, 50, 70 years ago. However, vintage bicycle enthusiasts can travel back even further, to a time before cars and motorcycles were invented, or to 1914 when the Great War called upon cyclists to fight.

Bad Teeth No Bar takes you and your bicycle to the most challenging cycling environment of all – war. Over a hundred thousand British soldiers used bicycles in the Great War. Even more French and Belgians rode, the Germans used even more than anyone else. See the bikes, read the stories, and imagine how you would have coped if you were one of the many patriots who enlisted to fight for King and Country.

In 1999 a collection of small wooden boxes was discovered in a flea market in Tangier. Inside these boxes were 500 glass stereoscopic negatives and handwritten notes from a French officer, who took over 250 photographs between 1916 and 1918. This book highlights previously unseen images taken across the Western Front capturing all aspects of war; from the banal and odd moments to the cruel and brutal ones.

It is a vision of one officer’s war, analytic and distant, yet with an exceptional aesthetic sense. The quality of the imagery and composition taken within a theatre of war a century ago is exceptional – even more so when considering the lack of portability and creativity that is present with today’s digital offering.

Across the battlefields in this opus he takes us into one of the biggest fights of the war: the 1917 Nivelle Offensive, the 1918 German Spring Offensive and the definitive allied counter-attack. We visit familiar locations at Ypres and Arras, the Somme and the Marne illustrating castles and trenches, officers and soldiers, British, German and French.

In 1915 Kipling made a tour as a journalist to the front line with some of the French armed forces. His report of what he had seen of the military activity was published in six articles in The Daily Telegraph, in England, and in the New York Sun. They were collected in booklets in both countries, with some small textual variations. The articles include: On the Frontier of Civilisation; The Land that Endures; Trenches on a Mountain side and The Common Task.

France at War

Kipling had been invited to Italy by the British Ambassador, Sir Rennell Rodd, who was concerned about the lack of understanding in England of the scale and cost of the Italian war effort. Rodd’s proposal was that distinguished writers from England and Italy should visit each others’ front lines and then write about their experiences in the national and allied press. The articles include: The Roads of an Army; A Pass, a King, and a Mountain and The Trentino Front.

The pieces collected in this volume were written in response to a request by the Admiralty, as the British public wanted to know what the Navy, the ‘silent service’, on which so much money had been spent in the decade before the war, was doing. Sea Warfare was a compilation of a series of thirteen newspaper articles, which include: The Fringes of the Fleet; Tales of ‘The Trade’ and Destroyers at Jutland.

This booklet contains articles originally published in 1917 in The Morning Post (bought by The Daily Telegraph in 1937). It consists of four letters, purporting to be written to relations or friends at home in India by soldiers of the Indian Army at the time of World War I. They were on active service in Europe and Africa, 1915-18. The articles include: A Retired Gentleman and The Fumes of the Heart.

The War Office Publications (WW1) series are reproductions from a number of contemporary manuals and books covering First World War doctrine. These were issued by the War Office (WO) Stationery Services (SS) Department and the General Staff to all relevant departments and personnel and provide a fascinating insight into the daily lives of soldiers, as well as details of how the conflict was fought. They also help to dispel the myth that the First World War was fought on a basis of tactical and organisational mismanagement. On the contrary, every functional detail was carefully thought through, explained and documented.

Chris Moore

Greg Dyke My Part in his Downfall

Written by journalist Chris Moore, Greg Dyke My Part in his Downfall is a memoir of the days and awaydays inside a large, semi-autonomous part of BBC News between the years 2001 and 2004. This compelling story offers a diary-style insight into his working life under the controversial Director-General Greg Dyke, who eventually resigned in 2004 following the Hutton Inquiry. As Moore writes, ‘My only contribution to his downfall was to survive it.’

‘…Saturday, 8th November. Newsroom, Centre Desk. The annual BBC Staff Survey arrives requiring me to respond to the usual questions. Yes, I would be critical of the BBC without being asked. No, I strongly disagree that people here trust each other. Yes, I strongly agree that there is too much change for change’s sake. No, I strongly disagree that people are selected for jobs based on their skills, knowledge and experience. Yes, I strongly agree that I have been doing these surveys for years and nothing gets any better …’

Venetian Villas

Venetian Villas tells the story of five centuries of art history, architecture and landscaping through a selection of the most iconic villas and parks in the Veneto region of Italy.

The book gives a complete view of the classical architecture in the Veneto region and its world-famous designers such as Andrea Palladio, Michele Sanmicheli and Giulio Romano. Also depicted in the lavish large format images are the fresco paintings and sculptures typical of the second Italian renaissance period as well as modern day artistic contributions added to these palaces, such as the large metal sculptures of Toni Benetton.

There is a unique look at the link between nobility and agricultural entrepreneurship, from the Emo family, the first family in Italy to cultivate corn in the 16th century, to the Benetton brothers, fashion gurus who in 2007 decided to start an independent production of wine using only local grapes.

Peter Kennard

Unofficial War Artist

Peter Kennard is Britain’s foremost political artist and has been at the cutting edge of global political image making since the Vietnam War. Unofficial War Artist brings together the best of Kennard’s work from 45 years of his career and accompanies a major retrospective of his work at IWM London, showcasing hundreds of his images related to war and conflict.

Throughout the book Kennard’s works are presented in their wider context with accompanying facts, data, newspaper clippings, United Nations reports, and testimony from both victims of war and its instigators. The result is a stark and powerful statement about the devastating impact of war and conflict.

Churchill Flip Book

Experience the drama of some of Churchill’s most iconic speeches, with this flipbook of footage reproduced from the Imperial War Museum’s Film Archive.

The Museum’s Film and Video Archive holds some 20,000 hours of moving image material. Originally, public access to film clips was provided in the museum galleries on Mutoscope machines, which operated on exactly the same principle as these flip books.

Gold Struck: A Life Shaped by Jewellery sets luxurious imagery of a lifetime’s work alongside an honest and often comically autobiographical account of Stephen’s career in the jewellery world. Alongside such visual opulence and a foreword by Tracey Emin and a host of candid and personal recollections from luminaries from the worlds of art, entertainment and fashion, Stephen charts his career from the first steps of enrollment upon a jewellery-making course at his local college in Rochester, Kent to his rise to international recognition.

This new book is a comprehensive account of a largely unknown aspect of the practice of this widely celebrated artist, documenting Richter’s series of overpainted photographs, which he began making in the late 1980s and still engages with today. These works feature informal photographs taken over an extended period by Richter, who by subsequently obscuring these often innocuous snapshots under layers of paint, has transformed their visual meaning entirely and created a fascinating and dreamlike body of work.

November presents German artist Gerhard Richter’s series of the same name – comprised of 54 ink drawings – so called due to their creation throughout the month of November in 2008. Richter assumed this method after accidentally dripping ink on to a sheet of highly absorbent paper; he then began to manipulate the ink in various ways – changing its consistency and applying lacquer or pencil to add further detail.

The book also contains an overview of the series, featuring thumbnails of each of the works, alongside a text by Dieter Schwarz – Director of the Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland.

Seventy TwoLucy Liu

Description

Seventy Two is a dynamic body of artwork by Lucy Liu. Com-prising 72 paintings in ink and acrylic, the series is inspired by the 72 Names of God – esoteric sequences of Hebrew letters that some believe help in the journey to find enlightenment for mind, body, and spirit. Liu’s art practice sits at the interface of Eastern and Western traditions of art, referencing a variety of styles, from Abstract Expressionism to Chinese calligraphy. With a freshness, vitality, and energy of its own, Liu’s Seventy Two series is a must for anyone with an interest in abstract art and spirituality. A text by Deepak Chopra offers an insightful introduction to Liu’s paintings, while Michael Dopp takes the reader on a journey through the se-ries as a whole. An essay by theology and art history scholar Ori Z Soltes explains the history and meaning of the 72 Names of God. This Special Edition comprises a copy of the publication presented in a silkscreened cloth-covered slipcase.

About the Author

When not appearing on stage or screen, Lucy Liu can often be found in her art studio in New York. Born to Chinese immigrant parents in Jackson Heights, New York, Liu attended the New York Studio School for drawing, painting and sculpture from 2004 to 2006. For over two decades Liu’s practice as a visual artist has en-compassed, and often combines, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, embroidery and collage. Representations of the body permeate her oeuvre, from portraiture to abstraction. To date, her work has explored issues of sexuality, identity, race, memory and history. She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Nova Scotia and Munich.

When setting down my responses, I used the technique of spontaneous writing as much as I could. I let myself associate with the image, but not randomly. It’s tempting when you look at Asian-inspired art, or abstract art in general, to turn the image into a Rorschach test. (Not that ink blots don’t have their own aesthetics. After all, they were devised to peer deeper into the patient than what he or she was willing to see, or tell.) I could be criticized for dwelling too much on everyday associations. My starting point might be too mundane.

Let’s go a bit deeper, then. Telepathy isn’t about using your mind like a TV station to broadcast pictures. Indeed, telepathy is no more than an example of how mind extends beyond the brain. Mind is collective. Its contents are shared. Hidden in its deeper reaches are invisible things. What kind of invisible things is Lucy tapping into?

Consider Listening To Your Soul (p. 136). If I sampled twenty people and asked them if this image was masculine or feminine, I think most would say feminine. The soul, or anima, is also feminine. It’s our source, the still point around which a lifetime of activity spins. Isn’t that implied here? I see that white dot in the center as a kind of source, and swirling out of it is Creation. The soul expands into the world exactly like that. I also think that most people could see the outline of a chambered nautilus in this image, if it were suggested to them.

Not only is the chambered nautilus one of the most beautiful shapes in Nature, but the way the creature builds its chambers, from the tiniest to the largest, is like a blueprint for the soul’s progress through life, beginning with the first, fragile experiences of infancy. Not everyone reads poetry anymore, but Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809–1894) wrote an exquisite poem about the chambered nautilus, meditating on eternity, of which the following is a short extract:

Year after year beheld the silent toil That spread his lustrous coil; Still, as the spiral grew, He left the past year’s dwelling for the new

Poetry is relevant here because it displays the entire arc from the dark unconscious to the light of beauty. Artists make the invisible visible. Even if you haven’t explored Jungian archetypes, few would
