KAPPA EPSILON – TAU CHAPTER SUMMER 2012

Summer Service Sisters have been helping the

communities near and far under the sun this summer

Women’s Health Fair Elizaveta Budko, Makenzie Page, Danielle Clare, Kristen LaCoe, Margaret Robinson, Tressy Ann Coats and Sydney Hien Nguyen participated in the Women's Health Fair at George Wythe High School to raise awareness for breast cancer and educate participants on how to perform self-breast exams at home. Our efforts were noted by Delegate Betsy Carr who also attended the event and was interested in hearing about our PharmCORP efforts too.

Hombre Some sisters had the experience of a lifetime traveling abroad to provide health care services as part of the Honduras Outreach Medical Brigada Relief. Sarah Park participated in the program in the Dominican Republic. Abbie Arches, Lauren Grecheck, and Hibah Rehman

RAM – Remote Area Medical Natalie Nguyen, Katelyn Nguyen, Lauren Grecheck, Tina Lowe, Allison Smith, Erika Lambert, and Rebecca Saunders all had a fantastic time providing triage services, medication reconciliation, pre-op care, traditional pharmacy dispensing and counseling services, A1C screenings, and tobacco and smoking cessation education, for over 2,400 patients in Wise County, Va, a rural area with little access to care.

Vsu Cares Student leader, our very own Shaema George, and VCU SOP student volunteers performed health screenings, medication reconciliation, and patient counseling on medications & post-op care for over 600 patients treated by volunteer dentists and student dentists, working alongside medical and nursing students as well. Sisters among the volunteers include Kelsey Billups, and Dani Nguyen.

KAPPA EPSILON – TAU CHAPTER SUMMER 2012

Summer Internships & Activities

So much to do, so little time! The sisters of tau have been up to a lot

of big things this summer.

SACGP on the hill Kappa Epsilon sisters are taking D.C. on this summer. Margaret Robinson, Linda Barstow, and Natalie Nguyen, who are SACGP members joined "SACGP on the Hill" to advocate for issues affecting older adults. VALOR Program

Danielle Clare and Sarah Aesy (Salem, VA) were chosen to participate in the VALOR program this year. They had the privilege of learning about the future of pharmacy and improving their clinical skills base through this Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency Program. What an

amazing opportunity for these two KE sisters!

AshP Summer Internship Jessica Libuit served as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists summer intern in 2012! This opportunity allowed her to learn first hand about ASHP initiatives and how they are used to advance the role of health-system pharmacists. Some of the projects she was involved in included navigating state laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy technician standards, collaborating with other pharmacy foundations, and advocacy productions. She was also able to attend the ASHP Summer Meeting in Baltimore, MD where she met and networked with numerous leaders of our profession from across the country and gained insight of various pharmacy practice models across the US!

Paul G. Cano Legislative Internship

Natalie Nguyen was selected to spend the summer in Washington, D.C. to learn about how to educate policymakers and help pharmacists make their voices heard on Capitol Hill and in state governments around the country.

KAPPA EPSILON – TAU CHAPTER SUMMER 2012

Weddings & engagements Congratulations to our beautiful unicorn

brides! Summer is the season for weddings. Four of our sisters celebrated their nuptials under the sun. Clockwise:

Sarah Kropp & McFall Pearce, Alison Avance & Kevin Burchardt, Laura Hunter Ford & Aaron Kirk. Next in line is Sydney Whitaker,

whose boyfriend, Peter Hurley, proposed this summer.

PHarmcorp Tau Chapter has taken on the KE National Project called Pharmacy Career Opportunity Recruitment Project (Pharm-CORP) here at VCU! This project was piloted last year at a local career fair day with sisters (Abbie Arches, Shae George, Kristen LaCoe, Kelley Miller, Natalie Nguyen and Jillian Stanton) presenting to classes of elementary school students on what being a pharmacists is all about! Our chapter recently submitted our PharmCORP Foundation Grant Application to KE Nationals to help us expand our project this year. We want to thank the efforts of the sisters over the past year on the PharmCORP Committee: Stephanie Culbertson, Kristen LaCoe, Erika Lambert, Kimberly Means, Kathy Nguyen, Natalie Nguyen, Kimberly Reese, Jillian Stanton and Amanda Walls. A special thanks to the faculty members, Dean Tom Reinders, Dr. Ron Ballentine and our chapter advisor Dr. Mary Jayne Kennedy for their support in getting this project up and running.

Women Leaders in Pharmacy - KE Alumni Panel We are looking forward to hosting six of our fabulous alumni from the greater Richmond Area on Wednesday, October 10 from 11-11:50 am at our KE Dean's Hour in Smith 103. This segment will highlight the leadership roles of women in the field of pharmacy and also serve as a way for us to reconnect with our alumni in the Richmond Area. We are so happy to have the following alumni joining us for this event: Dr. Ashley Joan Allmond, Dr. Sharon Gatewood, Dr. Kerri Musselman, Mrs. Rita Quinn, Dr. Amy Rudenko, and Dr. Van Tran. All students and faculty are welcome to attend and all KE sisters are encouraged to attend our KE Alumni Luncheon immediately following the panel in the glass rooms in Smith.
