Old Testament Unit 01: God’s Creation Lesson 5: People Disobeyed God Unfolding God’s Story for Teachers After God created this beautiful world, He set aside a special place called the garden of Eden. There He placed Adam and Eve. Daily, the first man and the first woman enjoyed a precious relationship with God as they walked and talked with Him. Each day they tended the garden and enjoyed the animals. All their immediate and future needs could be met in this special garden. God had been gracious to this couple. He had blessed them and told them to be fruitful, to multiply, and to subdue the earth. All was well in paradise. Only one thing was off limits to Adam and Eve—the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God wanted them to choose to love and obey Him. The tree offered them that choice. God didn’t use it to oppress them, but to extend to Adam and Eve a chance to trust Him for what was best. Trusting, they would obey. As the account unfolds, we become aware that against the backdrop of all this pure goodness would come a dark stain called sin. Satan used a serpent to question God’s goodness and to plant doubt in Eve’s mind. Then he enticed her, denying the Lord’s declaration that if she ate from the tree she would die, and telling her she would become like her Maker. Eve “saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and…desirable for obtaining wisdom” (Gen. 3:6). So she ate, and gave fruit to Adam, who also ate. Eve’s desires for food, beauty, and wisdom were not evil in themselves, but Eve sought to fulfill her desires in the wrong way. Both Adam and Eve had known a close relationship with God, so why did they disobey Him? They believed Satan’s lies rather than God’s truth. Pridefully, they thought they could become like God on their own. The way to godliness, however, is through humility and service—with God’s help. Adam and Eve faced consequences for failing to believe God knew best. A refusal “to appreciate God’s goodness leads to distrust of his goodness. Distrust leads to dissatisfaction and finally to disobedience.” 1 This sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Each of us will struggle with sin and Satan until we die or until Christ returns. Sin, of which all of us are guilty, brings shame, guilt, and separation from God. Just ask Adam and Eve! Yet just as God pursued them when He asked Adam, “Where are you?” (see 3:9), He pursues us. God’s overtures gave them, and give to us, a chance to acknowledge wrong and to be released from sin’s bondage. Because of sin, death entered the picture. Also, Adam and Eve were expelled from paradise and had to live with their respective curses. Yet God was gracious to them, covering them and promising that the woman’s seed someday would destroy the serpent’s work (see Gen. 3:15). We never can cover our own sins; only Christ’s blood can effectively blot out our evil deeds. God offers us life in Christ, but we must receive Him. Going one’s own way defies God’s goodness and grace. 1. Stephen J. Bramer and Kenneth O. Gangel, authors; Max Anders, gen. ed., Holman Old Testament Commentary: Genesis, (Nashville: B&H Publishing Group, 2002), 42. Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Lesson Plan Bible Story: People Disobeyed God (Genesis 2:15-17; 3:6,8-10,22-23) Bible Phrase: God cared for Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:21). Bible Truth: God loves and cares for me even when I disobey.

Introduction

the boys and girls that even though there are many

stories in the Bible and all of them

are true, there is one overall story w

e can call God’s U

nfolding

Story. Tell children that each picture on the cube represents a part of G

od’s Unfolding Story. Turn the

cube and talk about each point in the story. (Refer to page 1.) Express that every story in the B

ible is from

one of these main points in G

od’s Unfolding

Story. Today’s story is from

the second point: Peo

ple D

isob

od

.

know w

hat a rule is? A rule is guideline w

e follow to

keep us safe or to help us in some other w

ay. Some

rules might be: D

on’t run into the street; don’t put your fingers in a fire; don’t run w

ith a sharp object in your hands. Rules are m

ade by people in authority such as our parents, grandparents, teachers, police officers, and m

ost important, G

od. Sometim

es we

don’t like rules, and we m

ight not want to obey

them. W

hen God m

ade Adam

them only one rule. Listen to hear w

God’s rule.”

God

had p

ut Ad

am and

Eve in a special g

arden

that was very b

eautiful. In it were fish, anim

als, and

lovely plants and

trees. There also was p

lenty of food

to eat. Ad

am and

Eve worked

every day

taking care of the g

arden. They talked

with G

od

each day as w

ell. God

loved A

dam

and Eve, and

they loved

God

. G

od had

only one rule for Ad

am and

Eve. He

told them

not to eat the fruit of a certain tree. O

ne day, Eve saw

the tree from w

hich she was

not supp

osed to eat. It w

as lovely and the fruit

was b

eautiful. Satan, God

’s enemy, used

a very sly anim

al called a serp

fruit and ab

out God

. Even though she knew

God

’s rule, Eve chose to eat from

the tree. She also gave

Ad

am a p

iece of the fruit, and he ate it.

Sudd

enly, Ad

am and

Eve knew they had

done

something

very wrong

. They felt afraid and

sad.

They even tried to hid

e so God

could not find

them

, but no one can hid

e from G

od! G

od knew

w

hat they had d

one. God

asked A

dam

, “Where

are you?” even though H

e knew w

here they were.

God

was trying

to help A

dam

understand

what

he’d d

one and w

because of

what he d

id.

Ad

am said

, “I am hid

.” G

od w

as sad that A

dam

and Eve had

disob

His rule. H

would

have to leave the gard

did

not stop

loving and

caring for A

even though they had
