THE FIRST OF THE AUTUMN FAIRS The Balearics tourism

ministry is to promote an archaeology route as part of a much wider European project called European Cultural Routes. The ministry believes that this archaeological tourism will help in reducing tourism seasonality and in diversifying the tourism

product. Ten sites in the Balearic Islands have currently been earmarked to be part of this route, the north of the island having two of the most important of all such sites - the Roman town of Pollentia in Alcudia and the Son Real necropolis near Can Picafort.

People from across the north flocked to Old Alcudia for its annual Fira last weekend. Local businesses, crafts, games and refreshment stalls lined the streets and shops opened their doors with special deals. It was a great start to the Fira season.

The Spanish Government is to seek to have the numerous Moors and Christians events which take place throughout Spain to be included on Unesco’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These would, therefore, include the Pollensa battle as well as those of Sóller and Santa Ponsa (the event in Santa Ponsa comes from a different era to the other two, i.e. the conquest by King Jaume in 1229). And Valldemossa

might also get in on the act, as it staged its first Moors and Christians celebration earlier this month. Mallorca is on this Unesco list already, thanks to the Sibil-la Christmas chant.

Listening Ear Update Joyce ThewlisFollowing the success of our first community initaitive, the Quiz at Restaurant Trio, we are pleased to announce that a second will take place during the last week of October. The timing will be slightly different, and all details will be published in the next TOTN on 23rd October. On this occasion we will be offering lifts home for those staying on for a meal after the Quiz, and who dislike returning home on their own in the dark. Lifts will need to be reserved when booking. Please pass on the word to your friends and bring them along, we look forward to seeing you at Trio.

Mallorca 360 UpdateLooking at images on Day 15 of the Mallorca 360, you would never think that the

conditions before and after were so dreadful. Beset with issues from September’s ill-tempered weather, Richard Krugel was not swimming as much as he would like. On Days 9 and10, conditions were so bad, he barely swam at all.

On Day 12, Richard and his crew on Atlantis tried to cross the Bay to Formentor. He battled through for 2.5 hours but had to give up for the day. On Day 13, a 6.30am start saw a day of dogged determination. In three sessions he crossed the bay. The sea was pretty rough and the Balearia ferry didn’t help, but he did it. He was rewarded the next day with perfect conditions (see picture) and is now on his way south. Way to go Richard!

Last Thursday saw the inaugural concert of the 25th-anniversary season of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra. Making culture more accessible to music lovers in the north, the North Mallorca Branch of Calvia Lions’ are running coach parties to the Palma Auditorium throughout the season.

At the performance two weeks ago the orchestra, under their new Music Director and Joint Artistic Director, Pablo Mielgo was on fine form. Playing works by Georges Bizet and Manuel de Falla, all with a Spanish flavour, they delighted the audience with authentic Andalucian sounds brought to life along with singer Carmen Linares.

Afterwards, the Lions organizers and their visitors (about 30), met Maestro Mielgo and

his wife, the violinist Nina Heidenreich. It was also a wonderful opportunity to meet the other Artistic Director, well-known Japanese violinist and conductor, Joji Hattori.

At the next concert on October 9th,Joji Hattori will conduct Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. He will also perform the beautiful Violin Concerto in A-Minor by JS Bach.

If you wish to attend any of these special concerts, please visit www.nmbcl.org or e-mail [email protected].

Parking users will have to pay for maintenance

Twenty-four years are a long time for a town hall to have not got round to charging users for maintaining an underground car park, but twenty-four years have indeed elapsed since the car park under the Plaça Ca les Munnares in Pollensa was opened, and during this time not a peseta or a euro has been charged. Users had to pay an initial fee in 1990 in order to have the right to park cars for a period of 75 years, but the maintenance fee has never been levied, meaning that the town hall has not undertaken maintenance work it should have done. Work on the car park will now cost nearly €450,000, and users will finally have to start to cough up.

Beach and sea performance this summerAlcúdia town hall has been able to announce that the number of bathers who have suffered jellyfish stings off the town’s beaches this summer has fallen dramatically by 80% (these stings being those which were registered of course). The fall from 424 stings in August last year to 83 this year is attributed to the monitoring and prevention system that was introduced at the start of the season. Other good performance on the beaches includes the use of amphibious chairs for disabled bathers; the town hall is ordering two more chairs for next year. Less good because there is only so much that can be done by way of prevention are the statistics

for rescues - there were though only six to help people who got into difficulties while swimming - and for children who got lost: 113 in all. v

Investments in Sa PoblaThe Council of Mallorca is investing around three-quarters of a million euros on different projects in Sa Pobla. These include the renewal of water-supply and drainage infrastructure in and around Mister Green, improvements to the road to Llubí and the completion of the ring road. There will also be provision - almost 300,000 euros - for people in need. The regional government, meanwhile, has earmarked 600,000 euros for the building of the new railway station on the other side of the ring road to the current station.

Sewage renewal in Playa de MuroLast winter, many roads were dug up in Playa de Muro in order to lay pipes for natural-gas supply. This winter, they will be dug up again, only this time it will be for work to renew the sewage system. Hopefully, therefore, those bad smells will become a thing of the past, though the 3.4 million euros project will not be finished this winter. It will be suspended during next year’s summer season and completed, with any luck, before Christmas 2015.

Seaplanes returning in the springThere has been confirmation that the Seaplane Splash-In will be returning to Puerto

Pollensa next spring. This will be the third gathering of seaplanes in the port and it will take place from 30 April to 3 May. Fifteen seaplanes from countries including the UK, the US, France and Germany have so far been confirmed.

Campanet famous son to be rememberedMiquel dels Sants Oliver was one of Campanet’s most famous sons. A journalist who contributed to the leading Catalan newspapers of his time as well as to “La Almudaina” in Mallorca, Sants Oliver wrote about politics but also about tourism. In the 1890s, he wrote a series of articles in which he outlined the potential of tourism in Mallorca, and his ideas were hugely influential in bringing about the creation of the Fomento del Turismo (Mallorca Tourist Board) in 1905. A series of events is to be held between 31 October and 9 December to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Local hotels win TUI awardsThe German division of TUI has recently handed out two sets of awards - its “Holly” prizes for best hotels as determined through a survey of customers and its “Umwelt” (environment) awards. The Gruopotel Parc Natural in Playa de Muro is a recipient of both, while four other Grupotel hotels - the Gran Vista in Can Picafort, Los Principes and Natura Playa in Playa de Muro and Molins in Cala San

Vicente - are environment “champions”. A sixth local hotel, the Playa Esperanza in Playa de Muro, is another recipient of the environment award, which was given to 18 Mallorcan hotels in all.

Council warehouse purchase criticizedMuro Town Hall may well go ahead and buy a warehouse on the industrial estate leading into the town from Can Picafort and use it for storage for the council’s services. If so, it could cost as much as €835,000, money that would be handed over to Sareb, the so-called bad bank which was created to sell off toxic assets. Opposition parties insist that Muro has greater priorities than purchasing the warehouse.

No to bullfighting in Santa MargalidaWhile a motion to have Pollensa declared as a town against bullfighting was defeated recently, Santa Margalida’s council has passed a motion which makes it the twelfth municipality in Mallorca to have come out against bullfighting. While there is of course no bullfight in Santa Margalida, there is in neighbouring Muro, but it would be most unlikely to follow Santa Margalida’s lead. Muro did, after all, declare itself to be the town of bullfighting in Mallorca a couple of years ago. Meanwhile, Santa Margalida has called for a change to the animal-protection law which would enable it to permit real ducks to be reintroduced to the annual event during Can Picafort’s August fiestas.

Local News from Andrew Ede

Blunt wedding ends with a “denuncia”Well, it was the celebrity wedding of the year when James Blunt and Sofia Wellesley had their ceremony in Campanet recently, but things didn’t go totally according to plan at a further ceremony in Ibiza where Blunt lives. It was held on the beach of S’Estanyol.

Unfortunately, no one had asked permission for the tables, chairs and marquee to be put out. The newly-weds are facing sanctions from both Santa Eulalia town hall and the Costas Authority.

Delay to pedestrianizationIt shouldn’t perhaps come as a great surprise, but the history

of delay in getting on with the (semi) pedestrianization of Puerto Pollensa’s coast road carries on, if only for a couple of months. Work should have been starting next month but now won’t be until January. It will then come to a stop at the end of March and be suspended until next autumn when the 2015 summer season has ended.

Food& Drink

It has brought great sadness to many, but the time has come for Leo and his team to close the doors to El Ancla, the restaurant he’s run for 39 years. Entertaining loyal customers with regular jazz afternoons and serving a menu del dia that’s kept many locals and expats coming back for more, Leo has been overwhelmed with the response from his regulars. Friday 10th October will be the last day.

The restaurant is due to be

demolished to make way for a plush new apartment block. It’s understood that he has the opportunity to take on the restaurant in the block but the rent will undoubtedly be prohibitive.

Talking to TOTN, he said he is not sure what he will do next year and he is too young to retire just yet. Judging by the response on local forums, Leo and his family will have a crowd wherever, should he relocate somewhere next year. We wish them all the luck.

The Fairs have begun and at each you will notice a few stands of artisanal beer. At the Alcudia Fair last weekend, there was even a home brewing kit on sale. There are many beers to choose from in Mallorca and the first we have tasted is Sullerica.

Sullerica is made in Soller a place, come May, that is awash with the fragrance of orange blossom. It is this that inspired Guillem Coll to make his beer, originally for his own consumption. It was so good, he felt it had to be shared.

The first bottle we tried was the Sullerica Recepta Original, Cervesa amb Flor Taronger. Deep gold in colour the beer had a taste of exotic fruit, reminiscent of pineapple. The undertone of orange blossom was indeed evident making it a light and refreshing accompaniment to my tempura skate.

The second bottle was the Sullerica Blanca, Cervesa de Blat Cru Mallorqui. A raw wheat beer, this tasted more savoury than the first.

Happily, it was perfectly balanced and not too gassy. Again, it was great with our battered fish.

There are lots of other artisanal beers to try. Alcudia has its own microbrewery, Beer Lovers, as does Selva. Palma’s S’Escorxador is a brewery, beer house and restaurant. Talk of the North will be looking at more so keep reading!

Sullerica is available at La Birreria and Eu Serral in Pollensa, Sa Cisterna in Alcudia and Carnicas Castellano in Puerto Alcudia

Nilay, a chain of seven boutiques in Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa, Alcudia, Palma and Denia (on the mainland), offers authentic Asian jewellery, accessories, homeware and furniture. Once based at the French Embassy in New Delhi for 2 years, then the Indian Embassy in Paris for 4, Audrey Salas who runs the stores has been in love with Indian culture for years. Taking the reigns at Nilay in 2010, she was able to live her passion through business.

Every November, the Nilay team heads to India Jaipur in Rajasthan, or Bali, to select jewellery, clothing, home accessories and furniture from her long-standing suppliers. They are loyal to their suppliers but also seek new ones with every visit and Thailand is next on the list.

The jewellery on offer is varied, from beads and resin to cotton or leather, shells bone, macrame and more. There is also a small selection of silver and semi-precious stones, a line that will grow once an exciting collection is launched. In collaboration with an Indian NGO called Taabar, which takes care of children in Jaipur, the new charitable jewellery will be in-store in time for Christmas.

A Bohemian Chic style emanates from the Nilay stores and the ethnicity and authenticity make Nilay the place to go for something that little bit different. The fact that everything is hand selected with an ethical standpoint, makes it even better.

Thai MassageIf you’re feeling a little tense, tired or zapped of energy it might be time to book yourself a massage. While you’re at it, why not go for something completely different like a Thai massage? Fully clothed, you will find yourself lying on a comfortable floor mat while the therapist uses hands, feet, knees and elbows to apply acupressure to the your body. You will also engage in some passive stretching, a bit like having yoga done to you.

This is no crackpot fad; Thai massage is an ancient method of moving energy around the body, clearing blockages along the way, much the same as the methods seen in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine. When energy gets stuck it can manifest itself in tight muscles, or even pain and immobility, a Thai massage can help fix this.

Alison Crawford trained in Thailand, where going for a massage is like going to the hairdressers. Having lived and worked in Chiang Mai for 10 years, she is a firm believer in its benefits “So many indigenous cultures from India to Australia recognize that the body has its own energy system. This idea of ‘energy work’ is totally alien in western culture, in what we see as ‘conventional’ medicine.” Tried and tested for centuries, this is clearly a massage worth trying.

Real Mallorca 3 3 Barcelona B In an attempt to shore up the leaky defence, head coach Valery Karpin drafted in young Ghanese defender Kasim Adams from the B team. He made a dream debut by scoring from a corner early in the game only for two defensive howlers (not by Kasim) to give the visitors the lead. Joao Victor equalized for Mallorca but a superb free kick looked to have snatched the points for the Catalan team. Kasim had other ideas however and in the closing minutes he chested down a corner, turned a defender and half volleyed the equalizer into the roof of the net. This was only the second point that the club have gained out of a possible 18. Will it be a turning point?

Zaragoza 2 0 Real Mallorca

This was billed as the last chance saloon by the Spanish press for coach Karpin. A workmanlike performance by the islanders was an improvement and for 70 minutes they kept Real Zaragoza at bay. Once Jaime had given the home side the lead there was a certain inevitability that a second would come along and Hadzic duly obliged. In the next two weeks there are likely to be new owners and a new head coach at Real Mallorca and quite frankly it cannot come soon enough.

Ask Aunty Marga ...Dear Aunty Marga,

The children’s toys are everywhere. Do you have any tips to clear it up and make the house look tidier?Shirley, Puerto Pollensa

The other day, I saw my daughter’s friend put a pair of tights over the vacuum hose. In her children’s playroom she sucked up so many tiny pieces of lego and playmobil that got caught in the tights. She put them all away, then took the tights off and hoovered the rest of the room. Genius. For cuddly toys, stick a strip of velcro on the wall and press the toys on it so they hang

on display.

Yoga: Sun Salute AFor Strength and Stamina

Now into Autumn and darker days, think about moving your exercise inside. Yoga is a superb way to strengthen the body, these foundation poses build strength and stamina. During the practice breath deeply and focus on linking breath with movement. Inhales open and move the body against gravity, exhales release and fold the body, taking us with gravity.

In Mountain Pose, stand at the front of your mat, feet together, arms by your sides. Press down with your feet evenly, lift up with your thighs, draw your lower belly in and up, spread collarbones and extend your crown towards the ceiling. Keep this length and space. Bring palms together in front of your heart.

Sweep you hands sideways and up into the Upward Salute. If you’re tight around the shoulders, move your hands shoulder width apart, then, as you exhale, fold over hinging at the hips into the Standing Forward Bend.

Inhale raising up half way, look forward, heart forward, draw shoulders away from the ears into Half Standing Forward Bend. With the next exhale, step back to Plank.

In the Plank, hands are shoulder distance apart and your shoulders are over the wrists. The body

is long and narrow with the feet hip distance apart. Press the heels back and pull your heart forward, engage your lower belly by pulling it up so that you lose scoop in lower back. If the Plank is too difficult at first, drop your knees to the floor.

With an exhale lift your hips back and up into Downward Facing Dog. Hands shoulder distance apart, each hand pressing into the floor evenly.

The shoulders extend back and up away from the hands, the hips extend back and up away from the shoulders. The heels press back and down away from the hips. Push the floor away with your hands to create greater space between palms and hips. The head hangs freely and the back of the neck is long. If it’s difficult to get the heels to the floor bend the knees so you don’t strain the hamstrings.

At end of an exhale, look forward and step your feet to your hands. In two long steps or in several steps, either way is fine. Inhale come up half way

into the Half Standing Forward Bend. With exhale fold back in, crown of head extending to the floor into the Standing Forward Bend. With an inhale bring yourself all the way up with palms touching above your head. Exhale and bring the palms together in front of your heart.

have to be careful. So many athletes were sick after eating too many of these gels. At the briefing, when we were given our EliteChip which times us on the way round, we were told to put it on straight away and go to bed with it on. So many athletes forget about it on so they can’t track their race.

TOTN During the race, was there any rapport with fellow athletes and the crowd? JM There are two kinds of people, the first are very focused and don’t get in to any chat. And then the other kind who do engage with others and encourage them along. I’m like that. In the run, which I found the most difficult, I was with a guy called George from Angola. He was great. As was the crowd. They lined the course and my students were there cheering me on. It was a great turnout.

TOTN So you’re hooked? JM We’re looking into other venues now. So yes!

Next for James is the Sa Pobla Half Marathon and the Ironman 70.3. I suspect that there will be others too. If you want to take up the challenge, Alcudia is now host to both the half and full event. www.Ironman.com.

The attempt by Dudu Aouate to take control of Real Mallorca has come to an abrupt end. The club’s former

goalkeeper and Israeli international eventually lost patience with Biel Cerda who only has a 5.3% shareholding. However this was enough to tip the balance of power in Dudu’s favour as he has had an agreement in place for months to purchase the shares of Serra Ferrer. Aouate made a final attempt to bypass Cerda by making an offer to purchase the shares of Pedro Terassa, which would have given him control. This was rejected out of hand by Terassa. Dudu later appeared at a press conference and announced with a heavy heart that he was not able to proceed.

He was an outstanding player with the club and Mallorquinista was fortunate to meet him several times. He said that his motivation was to provide some stability for the club that he loves. He’ll be sadly missed by all the fans who gave him their full backing. His position as general manager is now clearly untenable.

There then came a completely unexpected turn when an Italian consortium headed by young entrepreneur Fillippo Ghirelli offered to buy the shares of Utz Claassen (20%) Terassa (25 %) and Cerda (5.3 %). The soap opera took yet another turn when this offer was refused and German Claassen bought Terassa’s share giving him a 45% stake. Utz Claassen has remained silent over the last few months although he now appears to be in pole position to take over. He has to negotiate with either Serra Ferrer (and the two do not even speak) or the omnipresent Biel Cerda. How this will all end is anyone’s guess but until ownership and leadership are decided the club appears to be on course for a descent into the wilderness of the Spanish third division.

The inaugural Ironman (in its fullest most scary form) was held in Alcudia and the event hit the record books before it even started. Ironman Malloca was the first venue ever to sell out in its first year. In all 2,500 athletes took up the challenge. Many of them were Mallorquins and one of them was our very own James Mulford.

A Pollensa resident with some serious long distance under his belt, James has been running half and full marathons for 20 years. James is one of the Pioneers of the Ultra Mallorca and back in 2006 was in the group of 12 runners to run the first ever Ultra. He has also competed in the Ironman 70.3 for the last four years. So September’s Ironman was his first foray into the full event. Talking to him just two days after, the tiredness had hit but he was delighted with his time and now he is hooked.

TOTN How did you step up from long distance runner to Ironman? JM It’s a matter of upping the volume, getting out there and training for

longer. I’ve always done long distance running and I swam competitively as a kid. The transition from pool to open water can be hard at the beginning but you get used to the constant motion of the sea, which you don’t need to deal with in a pool.

TOTN Does anything really hurt now? JM Not really. It’s different to an event like the Ultra. That kills my knees and I can barely walk for 2 weeks. With the Ironman, I don’t have any real pain just muscle tiredness. I’d trained with the

kit that I knew I’d be wearing on the day. My first all-in-one suit rubbed on my neck, the salt water can really irritate. So I switched to my old kit and it was no problem.

TOTN On the go for a whole day, how do you prepare? JM I’m not very high tech. I heard of someone who was sleeping in a compression suit. I don’t even know why. For food, I made a tortilla sandwich the night before and put that in my shorts pocket. It kept me going along with a couple of gels, which fill you up. But you
