UNDERSTANDING AESTHETICS

TASK

In 50 words or less, describe how each of the following images uses the specified element to create visual variety.

Space Colour Texture

Kaushik Design 'Wine Festival' 2007 Carolina Herrera 'Look 26' 2016 Antonio Gaudi ‘Casa Batlló’ 1904

Line Space Shape

Philippe Starck 'Juicy Salif' 1990

Susan Alinsangan 'Ipod' 2003

Shigeru Miyamoto 'Mario' 1981

Space 1

The use of positive space (the fork/wine bottles) and negative space (the black background) draws the eye to the fork first, capturing the viewers’ attention. The eye is then drawn to the bold white text ‘Melbourne Food and Wine Festival’ which then draws attention to the less bold text, the date.

Colour 1

The contrasting white colour against the blue flowers at the hem of the dress is the first thing you see. Then attention is drawn upwards through the block of solid blue colour to the face of the model.

Texture 1

The rough busy texture of the roof is the first thing that demands attention, as it is the most complex texture there. Then the eye is drawn downwards to the smoother wall texture. Then the wooden windows frames are seen followed by the smooth and curved balcony’s.

Line 1

There are many vertical lines used which demonstrates power and strength. Combined with the almost clinical metal look, the vertical lines make it seem like an almost dangerous or intimidating, powerful object.

Space 2

The positive space is the dancing person’s silhouette and the negative space is the green background. However, what immediately grans the viewers’ attention is the bright white headphones and ipod as it contrasts the other colours.

Shape 1

The circles and curved lines of Mario convey that he is a friendly, good character. In fact, there isn’t a single pointy shape on him which shows how inherently good he must be.
