About the ProgramThe Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Clerkship Program, sponsored by Faculty Affairs, Professional Development, and Diversity (FAPDD), supports 4th year medical students and qualified 3rd year medical students attending US medical schools including US territories from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine.

This program is designed to:• Increase awareness of opportunities in academic medicine• Encourage students from diverse backgrounds to apply to IU School of Medicine’s

residency program.

EligibilityAll applicants must be full-time medical students in good academic standing at LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) accredited US medical schools including US territories schools, AND meet all of the criteria below:

• Identify as one or more of IU School of Medicine’s diversity categories: • Black/African American • Hispanic/Latinx• Currently a 4th year or qualified 3rd year medical student. Qualified 3rd year medical students must have completed core rotation in all of the following specialties: • Pediatrics • Internal Medicine • Obstetrics & Gynecology • Surgery

Length of RotationRotations are four weeks in duration and are subject to space availability.

Mentoring and Networking OpportunitiesEach student will be paired with a faculty member in their areas of interest that will serve as a mentor and advisor. They will be given the opportunity to have a personal meeting with the Residency Program Director or Associate Program Director provided the student has not yet entered the match process. They will also be paired with a resident, ideally from a similar background, who will serve as a peer mentor and resource during the student’s visit. They shall also be able to attend all the educational activities of the department.

Financial AssistanceThe program will pay a $2000 stipend only to out-of-state visiting clerkship students to support costs associated with participation. Participants will receive compensation upon successful completion of the rotation.

To apply, applicants must complete the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) application AND the URM Visiting Clerkship Application.

• Submit the URM Visiting Clerkship Application. Supplemental documents include: • A personal statement• One letter of recommendation• Curriculum Vitae• An official medical school transcript

There are a limited number of visiting clerkship positions available each academic year. FAPDD accepts visiting clerkship applications on a rolling basis.

Other Eligible ProgramsIf you are a successful candidate in this program and are invited back for a residency interview, then you qualify for the Underrepresented in Medicine Residency and Fellowship Second Look Program. This program provides funding to support residency or fellowship interview visits to the IU School of Medicine.

Support is available for up to $250 per in-state candidate and up to $500 per out-of-state candidate. For more information please email us at [email protected].
