2 Brief Summary

(i) Brief Descriptive Summary

The Undergraduate Psychology Programme provides a broad based academic education in Psychology, with all routes providing the basis for GBC, providing students achieve 2:2 or above. It supports the development of knowledge in all core areas of Psychology ranging from Biological Psychology to Critical Psychology. At Year One, the Programme introduces students to theoretical material across the breadth of the Psychology curriculum. At Level 5 (year 2), students extend their understanding and develop a critical approach to core areas of psychological theory. Finally, at Year Three students focus their studies on specific areas of the Psychology curriculum that match their interests and career aspirations. Units at level 6 (year 3) are applied in nature and afford students the opportunity to apply psychological knowledge developed at earlier levels in the Programme to practical problems. At all levels of the Programme, students develop research and data analysis skills via compulsory research methods and practical units. At Level 6 (year 3), students undertake an extended piece of research in an area of Psychology of their choice supported by a dissertation tutor. Generic and transferable skills are developed within theory and practical units and also via dedicated Personal Development Planning tutorials, which build the skills necessary for the transition into university and also between university and the world of work. ROUTES: BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas). This course involves one additional year at an international partner university, during the third year of study. Students return to MMU for their final year. Places on the year overseas are limited and are selected by interview in Level 5 (Year 2): To be eligible students must have achieved an average mark of 65% in Year 1 and Term 1 of Year 2 and must pass the second year with no outstanding resits at the Summer Exam Board at the end of Year 2. The academic content of the year abroad will be selected and managed by the host

overseas university. Students who do not meet the criteria for the year abroad will, if they satisfy progression requirements, complete the final year as a BSc (Hons) Psychology student. BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy In addition to covering the core BPS psychology curriculum, the course introduces students to key skills and knowledge in the applied area of counselling and psychotherapy. At Level 4 (year 1), students gain a theoretical introduction to core areas of psychology, key models and processes in counselling and therapeutic psychology, and practitioner competencies. At Level 5 (year 2), in addition to the core psychology units, students are introduced to counselling skills in an experiential, practice-based unit. At Level 6 (year 3), students extend their learning of models and processes, whilst also undertaking a counselling psychology research project. A model of reflective practice and personal development is integrated throughout the course, alongside a focus on building the professional interpersonal skills required for counselling and psychotherapeutic practice. BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology The course introduces students to the range of contexts that forensic psychologists work in, and builds the key practice skills required by forensic psychologists. As well as covering the core BPS psychology content, students will study a wide range of issues specific to forensic psychology. At Level 4 (year 1) students gain a theoretical introduction to core areas of psychology and forensic psychology, as well as focus upon practitioner competencies. At Level 5 (year 2), students apply this knowledge to real world settings and to working with victims and witnesses to crime. At Level 6 (year 3), students examine working with offenders, complete a forensic psychology research project as well as applied psychology units. Throughout the Programme, students develop key employability skills. Combined Honours The Combined Honours route through the Programme provides a broad based academic education in psychology and allows students to study psychology in combination with one of the following subjects: Business Criminology Philosophy Sociology At Level 4 (year 1), students study both subjects equally. In psychology students are introduced to key theories and practices and a range of research methods. At Level 5 (year 2) students can continue with equal study or choose a major/minor route and the units studied depend on the route chosen. Students majoring in psychology at in Level 5 (year 2) must study specified units covering the core areas of psychology. At Year Three, students can continue with an equal study or major/minor route and can choose from a range of applied topics in psychology that match their interests. A further option in the final year is named route study. Students majoring or taking the named route in psychology must complete a dissertation report in addition to their other subjects. Students who have chosen a major route in Year Two can choose to focus solely on their major subject in their final year, leading to a named degree in that subject (e.g. BSc (Hons) Psychology). All of the subjects listed above currently offer named route. Students majoring in psychology in Level 5 and 6 (years 2 and 3) (must pass the dissertation unit) and who achieve at least a 2:2 degree classification will be eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered

9 Engagement with the University-wide provision (eg Uniwide Language, EdLab)

Rationale for Exemption from the Language Unit for BSc (Hons) Psychology. The Programme Team feels that the loss of core skills from the subject area due to the inclusion of a language outweighs the advantages of the value

added to the Programme through the attainment of language skills. Particularly, it is a British Psychological Society (BPS) requirement that students undertaking a BPS accredited degree pass core units in Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Individual Differences, Social Psychology, Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology (may be embedded within and/or across other core domains), and Research Methods. Thus the curriculum within Psychology is determined by BPS requirements; loss of BPS accreditation would greatly undermine the Programme (applications) and have a negative impact on student employability. Whilst, these units are not formally assessed until Levels 5 (year 2) and 6 (year 3) of the degree Programme, Level 4 (year 1) provides an essential foundation, which is built upon throughout the award levels. The inclusion of language modules (e.g., cognitive and neuropsychology), PDP tutorials and presentations within the degree Programme plays an important role in ensuring that graduates have enhanced communication skills, whilst social psychology, critical psychology, community psychology and PDP tutorials/units ensure that students have an opportunity to use enhanced communication skills within a multicultural and global context (as well as intercultural understanding through the acquisition of cultural knowledge relating to the country where the language is spoken). Psychology has an applied emphasis, which is consistent with the Employability, Employment and Enterprise Strategy. Uniwide is not available to Foundation Year students

Psychology have clear progression to Masters level. Forensic psychology is a popular area of study as demonstrated by the high recruitment to the postgraduate MSc Forensic Psychology course at MMU. Counselling and psychotherapy are very popular and specialised areas within Psychology; we currently have a strong Masters Counselling route in the Department of Psychology. As undergraduate psychology courses are not practitioner courses, this new undergraduate route is a way of offering students the opportunity to specialise in a practitioner area earlier on in their studies. The BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) course is an attractive option for Psychology students, since the requirement for studying the core BPS syllabus is not disrupted. The year spent studying overseas is an additional year, which enables participating students to select units from partner institutions on the basis of interest and employability, rather than purely to map them onto BPS core requirements. This renders the four-year programme advantageous when compared with a conventional second year abroad (as part of a three-year programme). The 4-year route will operate in conjunction with MMU’s existing World-Wide Exchange Programme, which has institutional-level agreements with a specified number of long-standing international partners.

SECTION D - TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

29 Articulation of Graduate Prospects

The Programme is recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as providing Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with that professional organisation. This is an essential prerequisite for a career as a professional Psychologist. GBC is an entry requirement for all BPS accredited postgraduate training courses and is also required to work towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist. The GBC is awarded through a successful application to become a Graduate Member of the Society. UK applicants for graduate membership and the GBC require an undergraduate honours degree at a minimum lower 2nd class honours level which is accredited by the Society or alternatively an accredited conversion course. Graduates are well placed to develop careers in related areas, such as: education, health, caring, forensics, business, marketing and mental health. Professional core and specific skills have been embedded within units. Professional and core skills and knowledge related to a career in Counselling and Psychotherapy are embedded in the BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy course. Professional and core skills and knowledge related to a career in Forensic Psychology are embedded in the BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology course. The BSc (hons Psychology (with Study Overseas) provides students with the opportunity to study Psychology in a different context and culture. This information is explicitly articulated to students via unit handbooks and unit specifications. The Programme familiarises students with the distinct roles of the professional body and the statutory regulator. Thus, Psychology graduates should explicitly understand how their training equips them with transferable skills that are of value to a range of future careers and employers. Students on the BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy will

30 Curriculum Design

The content of the undergraduate psychology curriculum is determined by the accreditation requirements set by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Within that framework, teaching, learning and assessment philosophy emphasizes the role of the learner, who is expected to access information in published books and journal articles, and be able to express topic-related ideas and arguments clearly. The mandatory/core BPS areas are: Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Individual Differences, Social Psychology, Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology (coverage is embedded within units and across other the Programme’s core domains), Research Methods, and Empirical Project (the completion of an empirical practical component at Level 6). The research methods unit at Level 4 (Investigating Psychology, Single Honours, 2F4Z0011, or equivalent) and the Level 6 project (or equivalent) must be passed and cannot be condoned or compensated. Students on the BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) must have an average of 65 for Level 4 and Term 1 of Level 5, they must pass the Level 5 summer Exam Board with no outstanding

resits, and must pass an interview, to be eligible for the study abroad year. These interviews will be conducted by the Link Tutor and additional staff. A workshop will be offered to help students to prepare for this interview. If students do not meet these criteria they will, provided they meet progression requirements, complete their final year of study at MMU. The QAA subject benchmark for Psychology has also informed the curriculum. Having been designed in this way, the programme is comparable to other Psychology Honours degrees in the UK. Since the curriculum is defined by BPS subject syllabus and QAA Psychology Benchmark Statements it links closely to professional and chartered career routes. The pedagogical strategies adopted emphasise the role of the student as an active learner, where the development of subject specific and generic skills is accompanied by the acquisition of subject knowledge. Progression through the Programme takes the form of increasing academic content, understanding and complexity, which is accompanied by the transition from supported and guided study to independent and self-directed learning; the aim being to ensure that student skills and autonomy develop in parallel. This evolution is designed to facilitate the progression from education (University) to employment (employability). Teaching/learning and assessment methods are varied and selected to address the specific learning aims and outcomes of individual units, tutor preferences and the resources available. This diverse approach encourages explicit and implicit development of student skills and permits emphasis upon active student participation in learning. Indeed, students via formative and summative assessments, across the Programme, are required to engage with and reflect upon the learning process; particularly, to consider their performance in the context of personal development and career aspirations. At level 3 (Foundation year) there is a core module Academic Skills for Higher Education (ASHE) which is specifically designed to help students develop the skills required to be prepared for and successful in higher academic study. Other core units develop understanding of the connection between theory, research and application to real life/work context. At level 5 and 6 there is a strong applied focus upon work-related settings, real world contexts and everyday exemplars, which embeds work-related experiences within the Programme curriculum. This is reflected by unit content and assessment tasks. In addition to this, practical work (individual and group) is used to promote the integration of theory, methods, research and application to real life/work related settings. Students are able to broaden their knowledge and understanding through attendance at research seminars, peer discussion and with tutors via drop-in (office hours) provision. Guest lecturers with relevant professional practice are used, where appropriate, to support unit content, provide work-related insights and demonstrate the applicability of psychology theory and methods to employment. Subject skills are introduced, explored and practised through lectures, seminars, directed and self-directed practicals, workshops and worksheets, individual project supervision, supervised activities in the community and preparation of assessments. Students are encouraged to explore further and practise their skills individually, collaboratively and with tutors via office hour provision. Generic skills are developed through workshops and worksheets, group activities and assignments, tutorials, computer based learning, and preparation of assessments. Students are encouraged to

further develop their skills through discussion with each other and with tutors via our drop-in office hours provision, and through reading dedicated textbooks, appropriate university literature and completing the tutorial provision on recommended computer programmes. Students taking the BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy course and the BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology course, will explore and develop subject specific knowledge and skills in these areas. The curriculum design of these two new routes does not follow the same pattern as the BSc (Hons) Psychology and BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) courses. This is in order to include sufficient specialist information to justify the specialist awards on the two new pathways. This means that transfer between the two new specialist courses the BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) course is not possible as it would jeopardise the specialist qualification that students are studying for and any contained awards they might achieve. The study overseas route provides an attractive option for Psychology students. At the same time, the requirement for studying the core BPS syllabus and the full credit quota of the MMU Programme, are not disrupted. This additional year enables participating students to select units from partner institutions on the basis of interest and employability, rather than purely to map them onto BPS core requirements. Participation in this overseas route, and specifically the year at a partner institution, has the following specific benefits for students:

(i) A strong focus on developing skills such as independence and initiative, as learners engage with the challenges of studying a new curriculum at an overseas institution.

(ii) The development of networking and cultural adaptation skills that are essential components of employability in a fluid and global economy.

(iii) An opportunity to understand Psychology as an international discipline and to see at first hand how it is applied to diverse international, cross-cultural contexts.

Experience of a culturally diverse diet of Psychology study areas, including those at Level 6 equivalent; this will inspire and inform students’ choices of Level 6 option units on their return to MMU. Option Units Option units listed in the curriculum structures (section C28 above) are all approved for delivery, but may not all run in any one academic session. Student Mobility Students on the Student Mobility schemes will study the same curriculum as MMU home students. Where appropriate, 15 credit unit specifications (based on the same curriculum content) have been development to accommodate students study at MMU for less than a full academic year. Combined Honours Curriculum Design The above strategies also apply to Combined Honours students taking psychology in combination with another approved subject but may vary dependent on the student’s choice of major/minor/equal study at Year Two and Three. Students wishing to gain eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society (BPS) must study the mandatory/core BPS areas of Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Individual Differences, Social Psychology, Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology (coverage is embedded within units and across other of the Programme’s core domains), Research Methods, and Empirical Project (the completion of an

empirical practical component at Level 6). The research methods unit at Level 4 (Investigating Psychology, Combined Honours, 2F4Z0012, or equivalent) and the project (or equivalent) must be passed and cannot be condoned or compensated.

31 Learning and Teaching

Teaching/Learning Strategies Across the Undergraduate Psychology Programme a wide range of teaching strategies ensure the acquisition of skills and knowledge and the development of independent learning. Subject knowledge is introduced through lectures and expanded/developed through: seminar/workshop exercises/laboratory work/ video presentations, portfolio work, reading of recommended texts/primary literature and preparation of assessments. In addition, students will have access to teaching and learning material for each of their chosen units including E-Learning and the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) (e.g., Moodle). Students are encouraged to broaden their knowledge and understanding through attendance at research seminars and through discussions with each other and with tutors via drop-in (office hours) provision. BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) For students participating in the study overseas year the diet of learning, including study units selected from WWE the partner institution, will be negotiated on an individual basis and tailored to student interests where available. Students, along with Link Tutors at both partner institutions, will select study units on the basis of (i) their having a high relevance to Psychology, (ii) high level of personal interest (iii) relevance to potential future unit choices at Level 6 (MMU) The Formal Agreement Development Plan (FADP, see Appendix 1) will be used to guide and record students’ choices of units at the WWE partner institutions, under the guidance of Link Tutors at each institution. The FADP will be used as follows:

(i) WWE partner institution to initially provide options for study (unit choices) for visiting students before the study overseas period.

(ii) Students to then make their choices in negotiation with the MMU Link Tutor before the study overseas period, and these to be recorded in the FADP prior to departure.

(iii) These choices to be held by the MMU Link Tutor and Student Mobility Team within MMU International.

(iv) Any modification of these choices on arrival at the WWE partner institution to be negotiated and agreed with Link Tutors at both institutions and not to affect the number of credits being studied.

(v) The FADP to be updated to ensure that a current record of students’ study choices and progress are available to both institutions.

(vi) Participating students to be encouraged to take units of study that inform their future choices of Level 6 study units at MMU, e.g. A student with an interest in taking Educational Psychology (L6 MMU) will be encouraged to select relevant study areas whilst overseas.

The FADP will also act as a record of supervision/support and monitoring of learning progress between the student and support tutors at the partner HEI’s. Once returned to MMU, the student will ‘sign off’ the FADP and provide evidence of their success on units of study at the partner

university as well as critically reflect on their experience. Student Mobility Students on the Student Mobility schemes will study the same curriculum as MMU home students. Where appropriate, 15 credit unit specifications have been developed to accommodate students studying at MMU for less than a full academic year. The content of the 15 credit units will be a truncated version of the existing unit.

32 Assessment

Subject knowledge is broadly assessed through unseen examinations, short answer and multiple choice class tests and portfolio work. In depth knowledge is assessed through essays, spoken and poster presentations, seen examinations, reports and portfolios. Subject skills are assessed through research reports, analysis of real-life situations through video recordings or direct observation, open-book examinations, worksheets, multiple choice and short answer tests. Generic skills are assessed as an integral part of the assessment of subject knowledge and subject skills. Assessment for students participating in the BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) course is coordinated in accordance with procedures of the WWE partner institution. Assessments set and completed will be those carried by the units of study from that institution. In order to achieve the 120 Practice credits for the Study Abroad: Psychology in an International Context unit, students will be required to pass all units taken at the WWE partner institution. ‘Pass’, for these assessments, will be judged and awarded according to the criteria of the WWE partner. Any eligibility for resubmissions of assessments or retakes of examinations will similarly be dictated by the procedures of the WWE partner. Failure to pass all units at the partner institution will be equal to a failure of the Study Abroad: Psychology in an International Context unit. In such cases students will no longer be eligible to gain the BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) qualification, but will still be eligible for the BSc (Hons) Psychology qualification, on successful completion of Level 6 units, worth 120 credits, when they return to MMU. Students failing the Study Abroad (Psychology in an International Context) unit would transfer to the BSc (Hons) Psychology award route on their return to Level 6 studies at MMU Student Mobility Students following the 15 credit units will be assessed via types of assessment other than formal written examinations. Where students complete their assessment outside the standard timescale for consideration by the Assessment Board, Chair’s Action will be taken to confirm the outcome of their assessment.

33 Inclusive Practice

Issues of inclusivity, ethical awareness and equal opportunity are high on the agenda of the Programme, from both the policy and implementation aspect. The curriculum is underpinned by

Page 41: Undergraduate Psychology - Manchester Metropolitan University · Undergraduate Psychology Programme Specification ... and relates to provision approved at that point. Programme specifications

PARM1.3

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CASQE Page 39 of 101 Programme Specification

the principles of social inclusion and reflective practice, which are woven throughout unit content. The BPS ethical guidelines prescribe student and professional perimeters governing ethical practice, inclusion and equal opportunities. These embedded within unit teaching and delivery and practiced via formative and summative assessments (e.g. practical design and conduct). Students studying overseas will be supported via the VLE platforms of both MMU and the partner institution – further details of this support is provided in section 34.

34 Technology Enhanced Learning

All aspects of the curriculum are supported by E-Learning and the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) (e.g., Moodle). Moodle allows students to access lecture hand-outs, timetables, podcasts, practice assessments, and also hosts discussion boards to augment student communication with each other and tutors. Moodle ensures that all students have access to the ‘same’ resources and supports those studying off campus. The use of Moodle is facilitated by staff development/training workshops and by student support sessions/workshops. MMU MOODLE will be used to monitor progress of students taking the BSs (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) course during their year spent studying abroad. MOODLE will be used as a platform for communication between the MMU (Psychology) Link Tutor and students who are participating in the study overseas year. Via MOODLE, the Link Tutor will facilitate announcements and discussion boards and maintain communication with all participating students, as and when appropriate. WWE partner institutions will use their own VLE platforms to provide course materials, to which study overseas students will have access. In order to monitor their own progress, students will be required, in negotiation with the WWE partner Link Tutor, to complete and update the progress record as part of their Formal Agreement Development Plan (FADP, see Appendix 1). This process will take place following, as a minimum, four meetings with the MMU (Psychology) Link Tutor (one during induction, then three during the academic year) via Skype or other virtual face-to-face communication platform. These formal ‘meetings’ will be supplemented with additional ‘virtual’ contact with the MMU (Psychology) Link Tutor as required by the MMU tutor or the student.

35 Placement and/or Work-based Learning Activities

There are no work placements. However, throughout the Programme, via several media (Twitter, Departmental News Letter, Moodle, Careers Day, The Guide to Voluntary work etc.), students are provided with information about and insights of work-based learning. In addition to this, within teaching sessions and workshops students are provided with professional case studies, which are augmented by the use of appropriate guest speakers. Students on the BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) course will have the opportunity, whilst taking the Study Abroad: Psychology in an International Context unit and achieving practice credits, to develop valuable employability skills including networking and cultural adaptation. They will also be able to familiarise themselves with a range of Level 6 equivalent study units and with a typical diet of units that are at a higher level. This will enable them to prepare for their entry into MMU Level 6.

36 Engagement with Employers

In line with the University’s employability agenda, unit outcomes are closely linked to employability outcomes. Units have a strong applied emphasis, which compliments PDP activities and focuses student attention on employability. Students are encouraged to engage with real world organisations via PDP and final year assessments. Students are also actively encouraged to participate fully in MMU Futures. The Department hosts special events, such as a Careers Fair and regular research seminars (these seminars feature applied applications of psychological theory).

37 Personal Development Planning

Level 3- Foundation Year Foundation Year students are specifically supported in their personal development planning through the unit Academic Skills for Higher Education 6G3Z30001and their personal tutorial provision. Each Student has a named Personal Tutor who is the student’s primary contact for academic and pastoral support. The Personal Tutor meets with the student to develop action plans for learning, review progress, provide advice on preparing for coursework and exams BSc (Hons) Psychology, BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas), BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy, BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology Generic and transferable skills are developed within theory and practical units at Level 4 and via tutorial provision. Personal Development Planning comprises an element of the project at Level 6. At Level 4, Personal Development Planning tutorials develop general skills for University study including report writing, time management, referencing, literature search and the use of electronic resources, IT skills, communication skills and group working. At Level 5, the Personal Development Planning tutorials/sessions further develop study skills particularly those concerned with literature searching, planning and conducting research, report writing as well as skills directed more to employability such as CV development, interview skills, and oral presentations. At Level 6, Personal Development Planning concentrates particularly on employability concentrating on identifying appropriate career paths, C.V. building and presentation skills. Personal Development Planning is delivered via workshops, Moodle packages and tutorial support. Each student has a named Personal Tutor, who works with the student during Level 4 and Level 5 of the Programme. The Personal Tutor is the students’ primary contact for academic and pastoral support and meets with the student to develop action plans for learning, review progress, provide advice on option and project choice. During the study overseas year Personal Development Planning will form part of the FDAP and will be further supported by regular contact between the student and the MMU Psychology Link Tutor. At Level 6, Personal Development Planning support is provided by the Final Year Dissertation/Project Supervisor, who works with the student on a range of employability issues: CV development, identification of appropriate entries into work, work on competency-based questions (as used on application forms) and personal and professional development. This occurs within tutorials and is supported by workshops and the annual Careers Fair.

N/A NB: the University’s Management of programme Delivery is available from the CASQE website.

41 Programme Specific Academic Student Support

Generic academic student support is provided to all students in line with the guidance outlined in the University’s Student Handbook. Programme Specific Support Students receive an MMU Student Handbook on entry to the Programme and have electronic access to all relevant University level publications. At Programme level, students are provided with Student Handbooks, and yearly coursework information. Copies of previous examination papers are available on the Library website, as are unit reading lists. The library has a range of information leaflets available both electronically and in hard copy, which support students’ ability to access library resources.

Office Hours All tutors post “office hours” (3 hours a week for full-time staff) and contact details on Moodle, so that students know when they will be available. Office hours are open access time. Each student is therefore able to access individual academic tutors in relation to concerns over specific academic issues and is free to seek support from any other member of staff, including the Programme Leader. Academic/Personal Tutors On entry to the programme, all students on the following courses: BSc (Hons) Psychology, BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas), BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy and BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology are assigned an academic/personal tutor, who, so far as is practicable, remains the same for the duration of the student’s period of study. Students are required to meet with their tutors on a regular basis. At these meetings, academic and personal progress is discussed. Additionally, tutors offer to meet with tutees if they fail any summative assessment or if they are struggling with the demands of the programme and assist them to draw up personal action plans. In addition to academic/personal tutors students are encouraged to interact with the Year Tutors and the Programme Leader. It is the responsibility of the academic/personal tutor, in conjunction with the Year Tutor, to monitor student attendance and track progress. If students fail to engage with their academic/personal tutor or meet the attendance/submission requirements they are instructed to contact the Year Tutor; who will deal with any resultant issues. Personal Learning Plans Where a student has particular identified needs (for example dyslexia, repetitive strain injury or other impairment), every attempt is made to make appropriate reasonable adjustments for assessments, taking in to account the student’s personal learning plan, issued by Learner Development Services. Psychology has a pro-active Programme Team, which deals with equality and diversity issues pertaining to teaching, learning and assessment; the intention being to raise awareness of equality and diversity issues (amongst staff and students), and furthering staff development in this area.

Student Support The Faculty has a Student Hub and a Faculty Student Support Officer. When appropriate, tutors will advise students to visit, or will refer students on to either of these and/or to the Students Advice Centre (an NUS service), where they may obtain help and advice on such matters as finance, housing, health and study skills, or counselling for personal difficulties. A drop in service is available within the Faculty, with the designated Student Support Officer. BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) A range of academic support arrangements will be put in place for students on the study overseas year: Students on the study overseas year will be obliged to conform to the attendance, coursework and submission requirements set out by the WWE partner institution. These obligations are part of the Formal Agreement development Plan (FADP, Appendix 1) and are matched by an obligation on the part of MMU and the WWE partner institution to provide the following academic support

(i) WWE partner institution to provide direct academic support for teaching and learning related to study units undertaken at that institution; this will be coordinated by the Link Tutor of the WWE partner, using procedures that are familiar to that institution.

(ii) MMU (Psychology) Link Tutor to provide Skype contact with students during their year overseas on a regular basis (one per term as a minimum).

(iii) Students to complete and update the progress record as part of their Formal Agreement Development Plan (FADP, Appendix 1) and upload it to MOODLE. This document will provide an audit of student progress (including attendance and submissions) once per term.

(iv) MMU link tutor to facilitate announcements and discussion boards and maintain communication with all participating students, as and when appropriate.

WWE partner Link Tutor to “meet” with the study overseas student four times during the year (once during induction and three more during the year), check and verify student’s progress record (including attendance and submissions). Combined Honours The student support strategies detailed above also apply to Combined Honours students on subject combinations managed by psychology. In addition, all Combined Honours students are able to gain advice/support from the Combined Honours Year 1 Tutor and the Subject Leader for Combined Honours in Psychology. Academic/Personal Tutors On entry to the Programme, named Personal Tutors are assigned to Combined Honours students on subject combinations managed by Psychology. Where possible the Personal Tutor remains the same for Levels 4 & 5. At Level 6, for Combined Honours students majoring or taking named route their Dissertation supervisor becomes their Personal Tutor. Other Combined Honours students at Level 6 on subject combinations managed by Psychology are assigned a named Personal Tutor. Personal Tutors at each level fulfil the roles previously outlined as for BSc(Hons) Psychology students Option Choices

Level 4 The Subject Leader and/or Combined Honours Year 1 Tutor provide information and advice regarding psychology study options for Level 5 via an Options Seminar and office hours. Level 5 The Subject Leader and Year 2 Tutor offer information and advice regarding psychology study options for Level 6 via an Options Fair and office hours. Level 3 Foundation year The Foundation year Tutor will offer support throughout the Foundation Year programme via scheduled tutorials, office hours and information on Moodle. When appropriate, tutors will advise students to visit, or will refer students to the Faculty Student Support Officer, Student Hub and/or the Students Advice Centre (an NUS service), where they may obtain help and advice on such matters as finance, housing, health and study skills, or counselling for personal difficulties. A drop in service is available within the Faculty, with the designated Student Support Officer.

42 Programme Specific Student Evaluation

The Programme complies with current institutional evaluation guidance. NB University guidance on Evaluation of Student Opinion is available from the CASQE website. Programme Specific Evaluation Student evaluation of the Programme is collected at a number of levels and used in the review and revision of the Programme: Student Reps are appointed for each cohort and they represent Students’ view at the Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) meetings; students are encouraged to respond to the national student satisfaction survey (NSS); at the end of each level of the Programme, they are required to complete a retrospective overview of each of the units studied. At points in each term students also complete the Internal Student Survey. This enables the Programme team to view individual responses from all students and evaluate the student experience; representation on the Programme Committee allows students to bring points to the attention of the Programme Team and facilitates issue discussion and resolution. The University has recently introduced a centralised system for collating Programme and Unit evaluations/feedback this will be used to inform practice. In addition to this unit performance is considered at Unit Boards (the first level of the two-tier assessment board process). BSc (Hons) Psychology (with Study Overseas) Participating students will be offered the opportunity to reflect on and evaluate the study overseas experience using a bespoke Study Overseas Evaluation as part of the FADP (Appendix 1). This provides the opportunity to evaluate the learning and teaching provided by the WWE partner, as well as the academic and pastoral support provided by MMU. Foundation Year. Standard evaluation procedures apply at Foundation year. Combined Honours
