COMMUNITY:The proposed surf lifesaving club is located on the esplanade at Mudjimba, a small tightknit coastal community which forms part of the Maroochydore urban centre along the Sunshine Coast. The expanding club forms the core of the community and is widely celebrated for its humble nature, sense of tradition and family-centric orientation.

INTENTION:The redevelopment aims to become an architectural icon and community hub which draws from, The redevelopment aims to become an architectural icon and community hub which draws from, enhances and celebrates the character of Mudjimba and which is expressive of the club’s role in both its immediate precinct and the wider community. The project must facilitate a renewed relationship between the surf lifesaving and surfers clubs by evoking a sense of transparency, honesty and invitation, of which is translated through the elaboration of materials and expression of structure.

The proposed development of Oxley addresses the forecasted population growth of the area, and acts as an experimental model for the development of future cities. To address the population influx, large zones of high to medium density housing has been proposed for areas of land above the local flood level. These experimental housing models will take the form of ‘social retreat communities’.

The experimental housing scheme for the Oxley floodplain provides short-term accommodation for the Graceville and wider Brisbane community which focuses on the retreat from impersonal social interaction experienced in the surrounding dense city nodes.

The design encourages social interaction through the integration of individual accommodation ‘pods’ to form a distinct community. The scheme incorporates administration facilities and a library and learning centre, while the surrounding land is used for private retreat and agriculture, forming a self-sufficient community.

Within the regeneration proposal it was crucial to pay homage to the memory of the Desoto Carr slums and Pruitt Igoe scheme as they were recognised as major points of historical significance for the county of St Louis. The concept engages with the layers of history through experimentation of the physical layers of the site, creating a juxtaposition of floor planes where the elevated and sunken zones correspond with the original footprints of the site’s past inhibiters. The history of the Desoto Carr, being the original occupier of the site, is made reference to by sinking the footprint of the slums below the existing ground level of the site, while the footprints of the following scheme, PruittPruitt Igoe, are expressed through vegetation and material variation on the existing ground plane. The proposed buildings are raised coloured concrete structures, where their supporting columns reference the past history of the site. Their multi-level roof planes represent the new history, expressing the Regeneration’s independence from the constraints of history.

Above all the proposal aims to pay respect through preservation of the site’s existing and historical fabric, while also providing security through community strength and vitality; sustainability through self-supporting efforts; connectivity through transportation resources; beauty through material richness and support through education and training facilities which service the wider community. A community run vegetable garden, youth cultural and sporting centre, amphitheatre and market spaces are among the facilities incorporated into the proposal to service and help enrich and connect the community of St Louis. service and help enrich and connect the community of St Louis.

My most creative outlet, secondary to architecture, is mixed media painting.

Since high school I have been developing my media of choice and the techniques for its application. The canvas is first prepared with an emulsion of clay slip, oxides and PVA, which is dried, carved and then coated with multiple layers of bitumen, shellac, oxides and gesso. The subject matter I often explore is the expression of significant historical events within the landscape in which they occurred.

I have been fortunate enough to exhibit an artwork at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane and as part of a I have been fortunate enough to exhibit an artwork at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane and as part of a travelling exhibition around Queensland, as well as exhibiting many other artworks in regional Queensland galleries. I intent to keep creating and exhibiting throughout my architectural career as I find it encourages creative thinking and problem solving.
