The local boys & girls club in Athens Clarke-County was constructing a new facility near the University of Georgia. The club had requested ideas for a landscape to develop around their new site.

For this project, we worked in groups of two to design a kid-friendly site for this facility.Understanding that the site would undergo very little to no maintenance over its

lifespan because of budgetary limitations, we chose to develop our site based on the concept of low maintenance and durability.

Located in Athens, Georgia the Lyndon House Arts Centre is home to

gallery exhibitions, festivals and other special community events. The design for

the area around the Arts Centre incorporated the development of a regional garden to

adapt the site to its full potential, while reinforcing the centre’s mission of providing community

education. Sinuous Piedmont Rivers were the regional source of inspiration for this design. These

meandering lines evolved into an eco-revelatory stormwater management and educational feature for the site.

“By sifting through and selecting from regional cultural history and physical landscape, a vocabulary of design - a wellspring of familiar physical elements - might be found to create places of strong visual presence and shared experience.” --Terry Harkness

The majority of people using this existing space do not realize that it is a memorial. This redesign is intended to change that by forcing circulation through the heart of the memorial. The design

intent was to represent the idea that when something does not directly effect us we pay no attention. At the start of any war or related event, most people are supportive of the cause and those willing to risk their lives. As time goes on, that

support and recognition fades, until we eventually just forget.

The city of Watkinsville is located near Athens, Georgia and is currently looking into future growth plans because of an increase in population. The city

was looking for help to redesign its downtown with consideration to the possibilities for future development. This master plan focuses on conserving the existing green areas and incorporates pedestrian only zones in order to create a more livable and people-friendly downtown.

The city of Atlanta, Georgia has long been known for being one of the least pedestrian friendly cities in the United States. Developed to accomodate the automobile, walkability was the least of the city’s

concerns. Currently, the Atlanta Beltline Inc. is working on a long term project to help reconnect the city by promoting non-vehicular transportation. This greenway

attempts to provide an access corridor from the Beltline into the downtown area with active-use greenspace for pedestrians

and cyclists in conjunction with redevelopment.

Summer 2009, I moved to a small town called Guelph in Ontario, Canada. For 10 weeks, I learned how to interact with clients, design residential landscapes, work with construction crews, and actually construct the landscapes I designed. The first project I completed was for Hudson and Amy Smith. This design incorporated a front walkway leading around the side of the house to a large back patio.

This was the final design that I worked on for Nature’s Palette. Glen and Nancy Cox wanted a more significant front yard to balance out the facade of their home. One of our

company specialties was working with large rock called armourstone. The design for the Cox family incorporated an expansive wall of armourstone wrapping around the entire front of the house

to outline a fantastic perennial garden. Design images shown below were created in Google SketchUp.

Barnett Shoals Elementary school had a significant drainage

problem from water running off the parking lot during storm events. We researched rain

gardens and designed a planting plan to build one on site for purposes of collecting and treating

stormwater. Over the duration of the semester we worked to construct

the gardenwe designed, from site grading and drainage

all the way to planting.

Athens Permaculture is a nonprofit organization working to instill the principles of Permacultureinto the local community. They wanted help designing a community garden, “Food Forest” and “Edible Park”, that would be accessible and educational for the local residents. We designed the site based on theprinciples of Permaculture andassisted in a work day to help start the wholeprocess.

PIEDMONT PARK DESIGN COMPETITIONpiece of the park

February 2009, Piedmont Park in Atlanta joined with Kimley Horn and Associates Inc Urban Resource Group to hold a design competition for the University of Georgia Landscape Architecture students. The park was looking for ideas for a redesign of an area in the master plan that the city is looking to develop. In teams of four, we came up with designs for this space which included water features, public gathering space, and nightlife. Our design earned the first place prize.
