Introduction

“Under the Roses” is a euphemismfor buried secrets. The allusioncomes from the Latin phraseSub Rosa

, which dates back toclassical Roman times whenthe rose became the symbol ofconfidentiality and secrets. The

expression became well knownin German literature, eventuallyfinding its way to English litera-ture in the nineteenth century.

Under the Roses Lenormandcontains 36 images based on thePetit Lenormand, plus alternate

Child, Gentleman, and Ladycards. Beginner to advanced, thereis something for everyonein this deck.

The Lenormand Deck

The cards in the Petit Lenormandare used in combinations toextrapolate meanings andidentify past, present, and futureinfluences on your life. TheLenormand Deck is diverse; itcan be used to address life’s deep

issues or for mundane inquiries. It’s great for gatherings or parties,as well as individual readings. The origins of the LenormandOracle stem from the reputationof Mlle. Lenormand, a famouscard reader who died in 1843.

The Petit Lenormand was namedafter her and published not longafter her death.

Keywords

There are several differenttraditions (or schools) for thekeywords. Among the maintraditions used are the Belgian-Dutch, French, German, andSwiss-German systems. However, there are traditions in many parts

of the world. It is not necessary tofollow a specific tradition as longas you designate your keywordsbefore reading the cards. If you dowish to find a specific tradition towork with, an online Lenormandgroup would be a good place to

look for a list and to make contactwith others using a particulartradition.

Method

Traditionally, Lenormand cardsare read analytically rather thanintuitively. If you are a tarot readerthis method may feel foreign toyou. A little practice is the bestapproach either way! Once youget the hang of combining the

cards it is only a short matter oftime before you’re on your way todoing a full reading.  That being said, the imageryin Under the Roses Lenormandallows room for your intuitionto come into play. Trust your

instincts in any card divinationsystem you use!

28

Basic Techniques

Once you’re familiar with thedeck, select one to three key-words for each card. Havingset keywords will provide moreconsistency to your readings.

Select which alternate cardsyou will use, if any. You should be

working with 36 cards and havethe three extra cards set aside.

Set your intentions before orduring shuffling. You may evenwant to verbalize your intentions, such as, “I am The Lady cardnumber 29.” Be clear about how

you will read the cards and whatyour keywords are before anactual reading.

Page 29: Under the Roses Booklet

7/18/2019 Under the Roses Booklet

29

The way questions are posedplays a big part in a reading.

Avoid questions that require a“yes” or “no” answer. You mayalso wish to avoid answering cer-

tain questions relating to Death,Disease, Disaster and Divorce.Simply set your intention that youwill not do so first. Open readings

(readings without specific ques-tions posed first) can be done aswell and are very insightful.

Because the cards are meant tobe read in combinations (not indi-vidually), the meanings changeeach time. It looks something like

a math equation. Let’s say youpulled The Anchor card and TheFox card, the equation then looks

Page 30: Under the Roses Booklet

7/18/2019 Under the Roses Booklet

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/under-the-roses-booklet 30/56

30

like this: The Anchor card + TheFox card = Your Interpretation.

Or, better yet, The Fox card influ-encing The Anchor card = YourInterpretation.

TermsThe “Significator” is the signif-

icant person or situation thereading is for or about, the subjectof the matter. It is usually TheGentleman or The Lady card.

However, many of the cards canbe used as a Significator, such asThe Fox for employment.

Influencing card—This cardenhances the meaning of theSignificator card by describingand developing it.

Pull two cards. The first is

the Significator card S  (themain card); the second is the

Influencing card I . Considerhow the second card enhances orchanges the meaning of the firstcard. This method is the basisof how Lenormand is read. The

combination is repeated whenusing larger spreads.

Next, pull three cards. Read thecards in a direct line from left toright (1,2,3). It can also be read

as an extension of the Two-CardCombo, the third card becom-

ing an Action card A . In otherwords, the Significator describedby the Influencing card takes an

Action. Say you pulled The Bear,The Clover, and The Garden. This

might represent an opportunisticemployer with a lot of meetingson his schedule. If you pulled The

Ship, The Fish and The Sickle, itmight represent a vehicle used for

entrepreneurial purposes (such asa business car or a constructiontruck) that is being repaired.

The Three-Card Combo islikely to be the only place the Action card will be used.

A Five-Card Line can be used as a

timeline: Past  P1 , Past P2 ,

Significator S , Future  F1  ,Future  F2 . The Significator card isconsidered “current” time.

Either... Pull the Significatorcard first, then shuffle and deal

out the remaining cards. Or…Shuffle the deck, flip it over, andlocate the Significator card. Pull

the Significator card from thedeck, as well as the two cardsdirectly beneath it and the twocards on top of it. The two cards

from underneath are the Pastcards ( P1  and  P2 ) and shouldbe laid out to the left of the

Significator card as shown. Thetwo cards on top are the Future

cards ( F1  and  F2 ) and are laidout to the right.

To interpret the cards, considerthe meaning of each two-cardcombination, going from left to

right. First, combine the mean-ings of the first and second Past

cards ( P1  and P2 ) . Then, pairthe meanings of the second

Past card  P2 with the Significator

card S . Next, combine theSignificator card with the first

Future card  F1 . Lastly, pair the

first and second Future cards( F1  and  F2 ).

The cards are read horizon-tally, vertically and diagonally incombinations. Use the top row inthis spread as “thoughts” and the

bottom row as “what is happen-ing.” The rows can also be usedas “what is known” and “what is

A Tableau can be used as a sortof grid or map. It will lead you in

many directions and prompt moretopics. Tableaus are great for openreadings; they address many areas

of your life and can lead to manyquestions and insights. You willfind that these readings take moretime but are very rewarding.

First, locate the Significatorcard. If you are a woman it willbe The Lady card, if you are man

it will be The Gentleman card. From there follow the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines toaccumulate information.

The horizontal line (row) inwhich the Significator resides is atimeline. It is like the Five-Card

row) indicate the past movingtoward it. The cards to right of theSignificator (in that row) indicate

the future moving away from it.  A timeframe of six to twelvemonths can be applied in theGrand Tableau, each column rep-

resenting an approximate month. The column the Significator is inis considered the “current” time

or month. Hence, the columnsbefore are the months before andthe columns after are the monthsafter. All of the cards in columns

to the left of the Significator cardare designated as the Past and allof the cards in columns to the

of the Significator. All of the cards in rows below

the Significator can be designatedas what is unknown, subcon-scious, or as what is happening.

Decide your way of defining therows before shuffling.Diagonal lines are influences

affecting the person or subject.

The four directions in which theycome from are past thoughts, future thoughts, past happenings

and future happenings. They arenot the main meaning but thatwhich influences it.

If you want to know about a

specific area of your life, find thecard that represents that area andrepeat the steps above. Say you

want to know about your employ-ment, you would find The Fox

card and map it out by followingthe lines on the grid. This processcan be repeated many times,

creating an extensive reading. The four Corners of theTableau spreads can be readtogether as the foundation of the

reading. Most people will com-bine the cards that are adjacent toeach other, therefore creating two

combinations. In two of the Tableau spreadsyou will see cards at the bottomthat do not fully extend to the

corners. These cards are knownas “Destiny Cards” and are readtogether as just that—cards ofdestiny.

The Nine-Card Spread can beused as an imaginary template for

a Tableau. Extend the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines to fullyuse the Tableau. Use the center

square of the template to help youwith your question. For instance,if you want to know about TheLady card, place the template over

the Tableau grid so The Lady isin the middle of the template. Ifyou want to know about The Fox,

place the template over the gridso The Fox is the middle card inthe Nine-Card Template.

Advanced Techniques

The following is a brief descrip-tion of some advanced tech-niques. You may want to wait touse these techniques until you arevery fluent and comfortable withPetit Lenormand.

“Mirroring” is a method in

which the Significator is foundand the card that is in its mirrorposition provides a glimpse intowhat the Significator is reflecting. For instance, if you are usingthe 9 x 4 Grand Tableau and theSignificator card that represents

you is in the second column andsecond row, the mirroring card

would be in the eight column andthe second row.

“Knighting” is a bit morecomplicated but if you have anyexperience playing chess it will be

to your advantage. This techniquetends to reveal those things thatthe Significator keeps secret orprivate and the results are some-

times surprising. As in chess, welook to the area a knight piececan move. From the Significator

card, move two spaces out andone space to either side. Thoseplaces to either side are read asa combination. Depending on

the spread and placement of thecard you can do this in up to fourdirections.

“Houses” are base cards. Asecond set of cards (to be read

in combinations), are then laidon top of them. If using a GrandTableau you will need two decks

for this technique. There are twomethods of creating Houses. Ifusing the Grand Tableau, simplylay out the cards in rows from 1

to 36. Or, shuffle the cards first, lay the cards out (in the orderin which they were shuffled)

in rows from left to right. Oncethe Houses are in place, shuffleanother deck and lay out thecards (from the second deck)

on top of the existing cards. Thecards underneath (the Houses)represent areas of life and are not

read in combinations. The cardson top are in that “area.” For

instance, if you have The Ladycard on top of The Garden card,The Lady card would be in the

“House” of The Garden. So in thisinstance, The Lady is very social, possibly a networking queen! Inaddition to being “in the Houses”

the top cards are read in the nor-mal fashion.
