SESSION OVERVIEWThe oil and gas industry is well-acquainted with cyclical nature in market conditions. From the industry’s inception more than a century ago, the resilience and dedication of its workforce has adopted to these volatilities time and time again. However, navigating the future is increasingly challenging in a more complicated global market. In the face of this volatility and complexity, the oil and gas industry has been transforming with comprehensive strategies that address the short, medium and long term challenges of the global market outlook. Agility and resilience will be two major enablers to swiftly address change today and in the future. Breakthrough innovations and a robust operational excellence business model are the main pillars of enabling a lean and agile industry that transforms as the market conditions evolve.

The executive plenary session will look at how the industry is transforming towards an agile industry through innovation and ever evolving operational excellence strategies.

SESSION OVERVIEWConsequences of low oil prices has cascaded down to every corner of the oil industry from drilling, through production to employment and spending on technologies with no difference. When oil prices were high, technologies tended to focus on exploring new resources, recovering more from brown fields and exploiting unconventional reservoirs to meet the demand of the world. In contrary, in today’s market conditions, strategies seem to shift to extinguishing low prices of oil and squeezing OPEXs through providing low-cost recovery innovations and techniques.

Fortunately, the generous spending and investment on technologies during the good times and the technological fixes of the recent past had spurred sustainable technologies that the industry is enjoying nowadays. There is a great reliance on technology to persuade the continual growth of oil business. However, there are concerns over how will the development of technologies survive and how will important projects be prioritised in the current market environment.

In this session, technologists and technology leaders meet to debate the issue of the Importance of Technology in the Current Environment. This session will discuss the following topics:

• Technology strategies and R&D investment decisions of the IOC and NOC companies in current market conditions

• R&D focus of governments, research companies and institutes, and academia

• The biggest research challenges facing the oil and gas industry

• Human capital for R&D: keep talent influx to the pipeline in current challenging times

• Processes and workflows to turn good ideas into marketable innovations: development and deployment of new technologies, managing and tracking new product development

• The cooperative framework for R&D: how operators and contractors can collaborate to increase the number survivors

SESSION OVERVIEW

Today’s oil and gas industry is a growing sector that faces many challenges. The fall in oil prices has had a significant and direct impact on the energy industry. It has led to spending cuts which have directly affected bourgeoning private sectors where much of the commercial activity is linked to either oil or public sector construction.

The current situation has led countries to look for deliberate methods to economise ongoing globalisation efforts and increase focus on localisation at the same time. Numerous benefits exist for localising elements of the oil and gas industry (this is especially true for NOCs). Localisation affects In-Country Value (ICV) in everything from education to employment to growing local incomes, purchasing power and monetary circulation.

GCC Challenges

Localisation policies, which are often borne of government-driven requirements, have multi-dimensional challenges, including issues related-to:

• Local supply chain capabilities/capacities

• Compliance to regulations

• Technical and quality considerations

• Skilled workforce/vocational training

• Health, safety, and environmental

• Customs, legal, and tax

Updates after 21 February 2017 are not reflected.

While they may appear daunting, current challenges also have opportunities attached, for supply side firms who are willing to take them on.

Opportunities

The localisation of the manufacturing/materials component of GCC oil and gas companies’ consumption is (in many cases) well-along. Along with it has come local capital investment, as well as a growing amount of technology transfer. Such manufacturing drives both innovation and diversity, with new and different industries enabled all the time. However, it may be time to think bigger. In many sectors it is likely that more significant, stable, and long-lasting commercial activity will come from efforts (and investment) in localising the necessary services component of O&G consumption. It is when these stable streams of commercial activity meet-up with and contain local hiring increases that a true win-win is created. The most successful supply side firms will be the ones who “think bigger,” and look to provide the full span of value-add, both in materials and services. Furthermore, such investments should have a very long, healthy life. Indeed, the GCC remains plentiful in terms of its reserves and its associated industrial supply needs.

For best results, localisation needs a powerful programme and strategy in order to maximise its overall effectiveness. In addition to local hiring, the industry itself must focus on important enablers, such as appropriate education and skill-building plans to support the programme. Indeed, emphasis placed on levels-of-training inside supply agreements can often yield more and better economic impact than technological investments, which often have less (or more short-lived) ROI.

Prioritisation

Lasting impact of localisation requires sustainability of particular economic sectors of focus, creating economic stability. Not all industrial sectors can or should be in-focus at once. Indeed, such a wide-ranging scope can lead to less-potent results. Instead, a series of deliberate, coordinated actions which take into account portions of O&G supply, suppliers’ and sub-suppliers’ COGS, as well as particular country assets or strengths (e.g. steel, chemicals) should be brought to bear, in order to prioritise highest-impact and most-sustainable localisation.

SESSION OVERVIEWEnterprises believe that establishing an “air-gap” between the corporate network and control network provide the necessary barrier to prevent hackers and malwares from infiltrating the control network. Recent attacks like “Stuxnet” that spread from an infected USB, “Dragon Fly” malware that spread through legitimate vendor updates, and “Dark Energy” malware that spread through spear phishing clearly demonstrates that the air-gap is clearly insufficient and more needs to be understood and done. The avenues of infection are many and that’s just one part of the problem.

We need to pursue a holistic, risk based approach to secure our critical infrastructures. Our approach must consider factors like our asset, environment we work in and consequences from breaches before we can develop a solution. We need to understand all the dynamics affecting ICS security and derive workable solutions. Understanding the dynamics and risks within the context of people, process, and technology is one possible approach.

In this session, leaders in the field of ICS security will share their insight and experience in this area and help us formulate a framework to protect our control networks. This session will discuss the following topics:

• Bridge vocabulary gap between security professionals and ICS personnel. Ensure security and ICS professionals are aligned on the right balance between security and operations and are able to speak a common language from a common understanding of the problem

• Resiliency as the prime driver of ICS security. Focusing on preventing attacks is a strategy worth pursuing, recent attacks have proven that organisations will be eventually attacked and must have a plan to recover from attacks with least damage

• Contribution of vendors in developing and including innovative and viable security solutions• Creating ICS centric security solutions developed specifically to solve ICS unique problems and not just adapted from IT• Addressing legacy systems in our facilities that were designed and installed when security was not such a big concern. These systems are now fair

game to the bad guys

• Security challenges arising from Information Technology (IT)-Operations Technology (OT) integration and best way to position enterprises to address this challenge

• Applying risk based approach to tackle security in ICS

SESSION OVERVIEWIn the twenty-first century, energy is essential to our lives.

Today and into the future, population and income growth, especially in the developing countries of the world, will require a significant increase in energy supply. As people’s needs and technologies continue to evolve, so will the energy landscape.

This century already has witnessed a major change in the dynamic interplay of energy supply and demand, and energy economics have been significantly impacted. Much of the change has been driven by tremendous advances in energy technology.

Technology application has enabled a new era of energy supply and diversity. Today, energy can come from deep beneath the ocean floor, shale rock, nuclear fission, biofuels, the wind, water, and the sun. We are also finding ways to use energy far more efficiently, curbing growth in energy usage and emissions.

Meeting the growing energy demand while managing the environmental effects of energy use, is an ongoing dual challenge. To keep pace with demand, the world will need to pursue all economic energy sources. Consumers, businesses and governments will drive and shape the ongoing evolution of the energy marketplace. Policies to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will increasingly influence the energy landscape.

We expect that new technologies will continue to create new options for the world. We don’t know yet what all those technologies will be, but history tells us that the best ones will be affordable, available on a commercial scale, and not overly reliant on government support. Enabling this progress will require policies that promote innovation, investments and free trade.

SESSION OVERVIEWCollaboratively addressing the technical, educational and social challenges confronting the upstream oil and gas industry will underpin its future performance, reputation and license to operate. Historical behaviours, competition, confidentiality/IP issues and operational constraints have often discouraged such open and active collaboration between companies and limited the effectiveness of partnerships with academia as well as the public and other stakeholder education and confidence. This situation cannot continue if we are to meet the challenges of increasing recovery efficiency, improving exploration success and increasing the value of major capital investments in new and existing fields together with the significant improvement required in the reduction and management of environmentally damaging emissions.

One way to address this might be increase collaboration and education in all dimensions of the industry. How can this be achieved given historic behaviours in the oil and gas sector? How can academic establishments be better prepared and their performance metrics better aligned with such a change? How can the other stakeholders be engaged? To better educate, inform and enrol governments, NGO’s and the public is an additional challenge. Low commodity prices could be a trigger for such behavioural change, enabling greater efficiency and improved value for money.

Is this naïve idealism in a world where the future role of the IOC’s is under scrutiny and the growth in influence and impact of the NOC’s declining? Could these trends discourage rather than encourage collaboration? Why is this not happening? What would a more collaborative world look like? These questions will among others be discussed by the panel of experts in this session.Panel members will include:

• Industry Learning Experts: - Middle East Operating Companies (QP, ADNOC, Saudi Aramco, etc.)- IOCs (ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, BP)- Service Sector (Schlumberger, NExT)

• Training Companies such as TRACS• Academics• Regulators/NGOs/Press

Oil Price Volatility: Continue Investing in the Future to Meet Future Demands or Control Cost to Survive?BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION & CONVENTION CENTRE (HALL 2)

MODERATOR SPEAKER

Eithne Treanor Rob FisherFounder and Managing Director Senior AdvisorE. TREANOR MEDIA BAIN & COMPANY

SESSION OVERVIEWThe oil and gas industry has played a crucial role in shaping the contours of the world economy in recent years. Evidences suggest that the evolution of the sector has been intimately interconnected with business cycles. Fluctuations in oil prices accompanied most of the economic crises in recent decades. With the current low oil and gas prices compared to the average price for the last 8 years, this creates a significant challenge for existing and new oil and gas E&P projects for both low-cost and high-cost producers. These projects, such as shale gas, oil, pre-salt and others, have to be competitive in order to contribute to increasing the global oil supply in the long term.

The industry keynote session will discuss the following questions:

• How would the oil and gas producers, especially the high-cost producers, maintain the balance between fulfilling the present global demand and investing in future projects to meet the future demand?

• What role will OPEC play in achieving a price that is efficient for producers to continue to invest in future projects, and that does not negatively affect importers’ economics?

Artificial Lift and Production Optimisation SolutionsLE MÉRIDIEN BAHRAIN CITY CENTRE

SEMINAR OVERVIEWThis seminar is designed to give trainees an overview of various artificial lift solutions and related production optimisation concepts. After introducing participants to the need for an artificial lift system, training will focus on each of the following lift methods: Gas Lift, Reciprocating Rod Lift, Progressing Cavity Pumping, Hydraulic Pumping, Electrical Submersible Pumping, Plunger and Capillary System. For each lift type, the seminar covers main components, application envelope, relative strengths and weaknesses. Animations, field cases, and example-calculations are used to reinforce concepts. A unique feature of this seminar is discussion on digital oil field as applicable to lift optimisation. The seminar will close with a discussion session wherein trainees would discuss their challenges and plans for lift systems with a view to understand applicability of the concepts learned during the training.

LEARNING LEVEL:

Intermediate

SEMINAR LENGTH:

1 day

WHY ATTEND?

Every oil and gas well requires a lift mechanism at some time-point. Often times during a well’s life cycle, changing conditions, necessitate switching from one to another lift method. Each lift system’s applicability often overlaps with other lift systems and it is important to understand when to use one and why not to use another. This seminar while providing instructions at awareness level will arm attendees with sufficient details to participate in informative decision making process.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Anyone interested in learning about lift systems application. Production and field operations engineers, operators, geoscientists, and reservoir engineers who wish to understand the implications of lift systems on their field/reservoirs.
