Food for Thought ~ Fr. James Bearss, Pastor Peace and Happy New Year to
the Northern Lights Catholic
Community. On behalf of the
parish staff, we welcome this
new year with glad tidings like
the angels who announced the birth of the child
Jesus (Luke 2:10). Some among us may have
made new years resolutions for 2015. I pray
that I might encourage you to consider
participating in Eucharistic Adoration, That
Man Is You, Cursillo, Teams of Our Lady,
Knights of Columbus, Daughters of Isabella,
Altar Rosary Society, Secular Franciscans or
Parish Council of Catholic Women. If you
would like more information on these and other
groups in our parish, please check out our
parish website at www.stmarycathedral.org.
Knowing that the weather is always a factor, I
would invite the Northern Lights Catholic
Community to consider participating in daily
Masses. The Cathedral celebrates a daily Mass
beginning with Morning Prayer at 6:30am.
Elmira celebrates a daily Mass once a week on
Tuesday at 5pm, and every First Friday at the
same time. These are great opportunities to
enter into the rhythm of the local Church as she
breathes and prays along with millions of our
brothers and sisters in the Universal Church.
My appreciation to all the those who took part
in this year’s liturgical celebration of
Christmas and New Year. The music was
magnificently executed with a variety of voices
and instrumentals throughout each Mass. I
thought the decorations this year were
exceptional, and appreciated the trees having
bows and bulbs to reflect a thousand lights into
the darkness. The bottoms of the trees were
nicely covered with poinsettias and draped with
green and gold. Thank you to all the liturgical
servers who graciously offered their
stewardship to cover the many liturgical needs
of each Mass. Now all the extras have been
removed as we briefly settle into Ordinary
Time with the liturgical color of green.
Ordinary Time means that we are in normal
time with little fanfare until the season of Lent
begins. We are always seeking new disciples to
enter into our parish vineyard as lectors, ushers,
altar servers and Extra Ordinary Ministers of
the Eucharist. If you feels so moved, please
contact the parish office and speak with Jeff
Crane.
If you haven’t yet obtained a 2015 liturgical
calendar, please do so at most entrances of our
parishes. These calendars were graciously
supplied by Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation
Service, Inc. free of charge for parish expenses.
The calendars carry the liturgical feast days and
other special Church events not found in store
calendars. Please pick up one of these calendars
and display it in a prominent location for your
whole family to review. Stay in tune and in
rhythm with your Catholic faith and the
Universal Church.
In two more weeks, our parish and the Diocese
of Gaylord will be recognizing the unfortunate
anniversary of Roe vs Wade. I would
encourage you to consider participating in our
5th Annual March for Life in Gaylord
beginning on Friday evening at 7pm followed
by an all-night vigil. The following day we
close with Morning Prayer at 7:30am followed
by Daily Mass at 8am. We will end the whole
event beginning at 1pm in the parish hall,
followed by our grand march to City Hall from
the Cathedral at 2pm. Bus transportation will be
available back to the Cathedral from City Hall.
I welcome you to consider participating in this
silent demonstration of public outrage to a
nation that aborts millions of our brothers and
sisters yearly. If you are not able to participate,
I ask for your prayers and if you see us on the
sidewalk, please honk in support.
Pax Vobiscum,

A New Year In the Holy Spirit
Did you have any new year’s resolutions for 2015?
Rather than resolving to make changes that WE think
we need to make, what would it look like if we ask the
Holy Spirit to present opportunities to conform our
lives more closely to the will of God? As Catholics,
we desire to follow the will of God, but just how do we
receive the direction we need to KNOW the will of
God?
Here are some thoughts to point us in the right
direction. Physical needs should point us to spiritual
needs. In prayer, don’t just recount the material or
physical deficits which are presented to you. Surely
ask for guidance in addressing such needs, but know
that Jesus always uses things like miracles, feeding the
hungry and the like to open hearts for conversion and
remedies for the soul. Desire the personal changes in
yourself which affect the spiritual well-being of others.
Anxieties are a good indicator that our relationship
with God is in need of renewed effort. We can get
caught up in all the needs of ourselves and others and
begin to think that “God needs me to do this and do
that”. This kind of thinking leads to worry. In prayer,
ask God to empower you with His grace to extend
yourself only within His limits which will leave you
with calm and peace. Biblically, Jesus often asks
others to wait, and out of that waiting the grace of God
is able to be effective. If you’re experiencing anxiety
over something sometimes God’s direction is to simply
wait; a difficult course to take, for sure, but a necessary
one if we are to let the Spirit work it out and not our
limited self-will.
In looking for personal change and new beginnings
it is prudent to look to the past. God has designed our
personal story up to this point in history in order to
move us into the future under his guidance. In
hindsight, we all can look and see how God has shaped
our experiences in bringing us to the present moment.
We all have had “A Ha” moments of self-
understanding from the past which forms an
appreciation and assurance that God is watching over
us. As you seek God in moving into the future, know
his method in your past. If you journal, this is an
excellent way of reviewing the past to prepare for the
future. All of this will make you more malleable for
God to effect the changes that you need to make.

“Stepping on the Cracks”
The earthly life of Jesus is marked by a radical
simplicity. As such, he stood as a contradiction (and
irritation) to the establishment of his time—and
continues to do so. Today!
If Jesus’ life was the epitome of simplicity, how
can we explain our attraction and propensity for
complication? Is it not, perhaps, a weakness of faith?
A shallow belief? A lack of trust in the simple,
powerful, rich promises of Jesus?
A reflection on Jesus as Light can bring some
illumination: and with it, joy and direction and peace
to our walk on the path of life.
John the Baptist prophesied that “the real Light…
was coming into the world … yet his own did not
accept Him” (1 Jn 10-11). What about times when
we turn away from the Light (Jesus)? When we
prefer the comfort of the shadows? Or create
complicated structures, distractions, entertainments
and laws in which we can hide? Or times when we
look away from the very Light that can bring us
peace and tranquility. “The Lord is my Light…of
whom shall I be afraid?” (Ps. 27).
At the very center of things, it comes down to
everyday choices. Most of them are very small
(which, in turn, give us direction and courage and
prepare us to take on the real big challenges).
Ever notice that when we walk in the Light of the
Lord, there is joy and peace and freedom in our
lives? Fulfillment? You might observe this in the
lives of some of the saintly persons you know. Or in
your own life?
Ever notice that when we walk, trying “not to
step on the cracks”, there is stiffness and fatigue?
Emptiness? You might observe this in the lifestyles
of some persons around you. Or in your own life-
walk?
If we keep our feet on the path of life in the Light
of the Lord, we have direction and purpose and
confidence. We know “where we came from and
where we are going! (Jn 8:14) .
Most of all, in our journey, we have
companionship and friendship with the Lord.
For in His light, we see LIGHT! (Ps. 36:9)

BECOMING A MAN AFTER
GOD’S OWN HEART
The Spring Semester of "That Man Is You" will be starting on
Saturday, January 17th and will go for 13 weeks. During the Fall Semester we learned the four leadership roles of men and the consequences of failed male leadership. We identified the five personal traits necessary to fulfill authentic male leadership. We identified Satan’s enduring attack on authentic leadership. And we learned how Christ perfectly fulfilled the four leadership roles of man and offers every man the opportunity to do so. This Spring Semester we will: identify the three
fundamental orientations of each person in the spiritual life; identify the three fundamental temptations in the spiritual life and the means for overcoming them; identify the three practices by which a person can live a life immersed in God; complete three exercises to help men objectively evaluate the current state of their spiritual life; develop a spiritual plan of life. This FREE - No Obligation program will be held
on Saturday mornings in the parish hall at 6:30 am - 8:00 am starting January 17th. It will start with coffee and a light breakfast, watch a presentation, then break into small groups for discussions. For more information and to register you may go to www.thatmanisyou.org and search events for Gaylord, MI. There will also be registration tables after all Masses on January 10th and 11th. For questions, email Chad Fate [email protected].
Masses of Thanksgiving
Bishop Chad Zielinski, who was ordained the Bishop of Fairbanks, Alaska, on December 15, will be celebrating Masses of Thanksgiving in the Diocese of Gaylord. Bishop
Zielinski grew up in Alpena and attended St. Bernard Parish. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Gaylord in 1996 by the Most Rev. Patrick R. Cooney. He has since served at parishes throughout the diocese, including Immaculate Conception, Traverse City, St. Philip Neri, Empire, and St. Rita-St. Joseph, Maple City. Most recently, Bishop Zielinski had been serving in the Archdiocese for the Military Services as Chaplain, which included three tours of duty in war zones, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Each Mass of Thanksgiving will be followed by a reception. All are invited to attend, though any clergy planning to attend are asked to RSVP to Candace Neff at [email protected] or 989.732.5147.
The Masses are as follows:
• Thursday, January 15 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Philip Neri, Empire, MI
• Saturday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Mary Cathedral, Gaylord, MI
• Sunday, January 18 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Bernard, Alpena

Citizens of the Year 2014 On January 3, 2015, Jerry Coger from Holy Redeemer Parish, and Frank Rock from First Uni ted Methodis t Church, were recognized by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 175 (Gaylord) as Citizens of the Year for 2014. Both men volunteer 5 days each week at the Otsego County Food Pantry, managing that program. They also brought to Otsego County the Backpack Program, a weekend nutrition program through the Food Pantry that provides food to school age students that are classified food deprived, in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Through these programs, over 2,000 families living in Otsego County (6,300 people) were served in 2014, and 200 children are currently participating in the Backpack Program during this school year. Congratulations Jerry and Frank.

Refuge Training! We welcome all who would like to learn more about volunteering for the Refuge or just a refresher update! We need more
volunteers so thank you for sharing with your family, friends, and social groups.
Thursday, January 15th 2015
2:00~3:30 PM or 6:30~8 PM St. Mary Cathedral Parish Hall, Gaylord
We will be having a drawing for an “I am a Refugee” T-Shirt or Mug! For questions contact Shirley at the R e f u g e O f f i c e 6 1 9 - 1 1 7 2 o r e m a i l [email protected].
Laundry Coordinator Needed: I also wanted to mention we are looking for a Laundry Coordinator which is a person to help do the coordinating of making sure the laundry gets done every Saturday morning. The NHS students from St. Mary have committed to one Saturday a month so it is just a matter of helping us find a few more groups or individuals who would enjoy that ministry and then simply coordinating the pick ups and drop offs.
Donations Needed: As far as donations go I know we are getting low on hand/foot warmers, bus tokens, bottled water and healthy snacks like nuts, jerky, protein bars etc.. Our greatest need however is really more volunteers. Thank you for sharing this idea with friends and maybe even offer to do it with them:) This is a really nice way to connect with family and friends and to help the community at the same time! We are also looking for quotes from anyone willing to share about their experience at the Refuge that we could post on our new website and always always....more than anything...your beautiful prayers! Donation may be dropped off at St. Mary Cathedral Office.
