Walter Murray Collegiate 1905 Preston Avenue, Saskatoon, SK S7J 2E7

Last evening, as I watched the action at the city track meet, I was provided with a fitting image for the school year. The track events covered a range of distances, and many of the races required the athletes to circle the track several times. Regardless of the distance, however, something happened as the runners passed my vantage point near the final turn. Invariably, each runner found a little extra, a final kick. Like these athletes, we are approaching the end of another challenging, sometimes grueling race. Now we’re on the home stretch, and sprinting toward the finish. In recent weeks, we’ve already seen a few indicators that we are nearing the end of the high school experience for a quarter of our students. On May 15th, leading into the Victoria Day holiday, many of our grade 12s, along with family and friends, enjoyed the Graduation Banquet, Dance, and After-Grad party. Earlier that week, the artistic talents of our senior students were on display in the Bowtie Event, an art show featuring Walter Murray’s graduating artists. New this year was the Youth Symposium, an opportunity for students to explore some of the contemporary issues and challenges that they will continue to face as they enter the adult world. The final weeks of school will bring a number of culminating events of interest to students in all grades.

On Tuesday morning, June 9th, we hold our Marauder Recognition Assemblies where we identify subject award winners in each grade, present several awards and scholarships, and acknowledge top contributors in Activities, Fine Arts, and Athletics. A separate Athletic Awards Banquet happens later that week, on Thursday, June 11th. On the very last day of school, June 26th, we will gather at TCU Place for the 53rd annual Walter Murray Graduation Exercises. Be sure to mark these celebrations on your calendar. Our graduating students are not the only ones moving on to new challenges. Doug Balfour, Diane Edwards, Glenn Harding, Glenda Kadyschuk, Kathy Malanovich, Roland Nordick, and Sophia Kwasnik-Senger are all retiring after productive and distinguished careers. Lana Burton and Brianne Gerwing will be leaving Saskatoon behind for other opportunities. Bonita Janzen and Brad Schoenfeld have been granted professional development leaves, while Kimberley Schmiedge undertakes a deferred salary leave. Michelle Naidu is joining the Saskatchewan Professional Development Unit (SPDU). Other regular staff members will be assuming new assignments at other Saskatoon schools. Although there may still be more changes, we know that we will be losing Heather Braaten, Sue Campbell,

David Crowell, Ali Fairbrother, Alina Floch, Jolene Klassen, Christa MacBride, Lindsay Meyer, Ryan Okrainetz, Tom Simes, and Melanie Wagar. We truly appreciate the considerable contributions of all those mentioned in this paragraph, and we wish them all the best. In just a few weeks, students will also be engaged in activities and assessments designed to bring closure to the school year. As was the case at the end of Semester 1, we will have a single morning block dedicated to each of the five periods. Beginning on June 17th for grade 12 classes, and on the 18th for all other grades, students are required to attend between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. There will be a fifteen minute break within the blocks, which are intended to provide substantial opportunities for culminating activities or assessments in each class. I encourage you to approach the end of the year in a manner that will leave you satisfied at having offered your best effort. On behalf of the staff, I thank you for your contributions to another great year at Walter Murray. Keep on pushing hard, right to the finish line, then enjoy a wonderful summer. Brian Flaherty

Clubs

CANOE CLUB

Walter Murray’s Canoe Club is in full swing this spring with our swim test completed in April at Harry Bailey Pool and our weekly luncheon meetings on Tuesdays. With the ice off the lake, we were able to practice our skills and technique on Briarwood Lake at the beginning of May. With over 60 dedicated students in the club we also had two practices at River Landing and two more exciting rowing practice trips down the Saskatchewan River from Beaver Creek (about 20 kms). This will prepare us for our awesome three day trip from Saskatoon to Batoche from June 4 to June 6. We’re looking forward to spending time together and continued sunshine for our trip!

WM Variety Night 2015 Students, family and friends were treated to an entertaining evening of talented performers on Thursday, May 21. The chance for students to showcase their talents made it a night to remember as singers, musicians, dancers and speakers in all forms, made their mark. Proceeds this year will go towards replacement of the stage curtains. A big thank you to Mrs. Christ and the advanced students for running the Silent Auctions and concession, to Mr. Strange’s Graphic Arts students for advertising, to students running sound and light, our MCs , and to all who helped make the evening a great success. Walter Murray talent rocks!

Jun “Jack” Z. won provincial gold in the Website Development competi-tion at Skills Canada Saskatchewan competition on April 17 in Moose Jaw. The Website Development competition required Jack to demonstrate his mastery of HTML/CSS/JavaScript/PHP/MySQL. As the gold medal winner, Jack will be representing Saskatchewan at the national Skills Canada competition on May 27 to 30. Good luck!

The Grade 11 and 12 Band participated in the Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Banff and had the pleasure of attending a concert by Order of Canada recipient Jens Lindemann. The Grade 10 Band travelled to Red Deer to take part in the Alberta Festival of Bands. The Senior Jazz Band was the recipient of the Long & McQuade Grade B Stage Band Trophy which was accompanied by a $100 prize provided by Potash Corporation. Congratulations to all! Our final concert is Monday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Girls’ Gym. Admission is $3 (students grade 8 and under are admitted free). Join us as we celebrate our accomplishments from the year. Awards will be presented and the grade 12s will be dressed in their grad outfits! Our 13th Annual Jazz Night was a big success. Thanks to all of the groups who performed and to all of the supporters who came out and enjoyed a great night of entertainment. If you rented your instrument from the school, be sure to return it to Mrs. Pittman after your final ensemble performance. If you would like to keep your instrument over the summer, please bring your rental cheque for next year for $75 made out to Walter Murray Collegiate to Mrs. Pittman and bring your instrument to her so she can run it through our inventory list. WALTER MURRAY WELCOMES LINK CREW FOR THE 2015 SCHOOL YEAR

Link Crew is a transition and mentorship program that involves older students helping incoming grade 9s become attached to their new school. The model has been in use across North America for the past twenty years, and many schools report positive outcomes and an increased sense of belonging for everyone involved. After receiving leadership training, the older students coordinate orientation activities for an assigned group of grade 9s. All grade 9s are included. Moving forward, we know that the link crew will have the support of the entire Walter Murray community and we truly appreciate your contributions.

Senior Badminton Team

The 10th Anniversary of the Brian Walter

Memorial Badminton Tournament

The 10th Annual Brian Walter Memorial Tournament, held on Thursday April 16 was an astounding success. This Heart and Stroke Foundation fundraiser was created in honor of a fellow Walter Murray teacher and badminton coach, Brian Walter, who passed away suddenly of a heart attack in May of 2005. There were over 135 participants, from schools across the city, who took part in the tournament. The participants gathered pledges to raise an amazing $5,406 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, which was the highest total raised in the ten years of this tournament. This total brings the ten year total to over an astonishing $38,000. The Heart and Stroke Foundation awarded the school (thanks to Mrs. Braaten) an Award of Merit Banner to thank our school for their commitment to a very worthy cause. The organizing committee and Heart and Stroke Foundation thank you all for your generous donations. The Top Team Fundraiser for the tournament was our very own WMCI Senior Badminton Team who raised a total of $1,547. They received a plaque and pizza party compliments of Walter Murray. They would like to thank all of the people who donated during period two and for two days in the cafeteria. Your generosity raised a total of $627 which made Mr. Thiessen (a heart attack survivor) proud to be part of this giving community. This effort allowed Mr. Thiessen to win his 10th consecutive Top Coach Fundraiser Prize (free oil changes from Glenwood Auto).

Other important fundraisers included: Chris C., a player from Centennial Collegiate who raised $500 and Nashin A. from Bethlehem High School who raised $346. Each player won a Black Knight badminton racket donated from Black Knight and WMCI. We would also like to thank our generous sponsors who donated various prizes. All participants and coaches received a Powerade or Dasani Water compliments of Coca-Cola and a day pass from the Riverside Badminton Club. The top three teams from each category also won some great prizes donated by Black Knight, Walter Murray, Sport Factor, Al Anderson’s Source for Sport, Olympian Sports, and many more. Congratulations to our Walter Murray winners: Jatin G. receiving 2nd place in Boys’ Singles; Kelly T. and Taylor W. receiving 3rd place in Girls’ Doubles; and Harry H. receiving 3rd place in Boys’ Singles. We had many other successful WMCI players who represented our school falling just shy of the medal round. Thanks to all who helped set up, organize, run, and take down the tournament. Without you, this tournament would not have been the amazing success that it was!

SENIOR BADMINTON 2015 has been an exciting season for senior badminton. We placed second in league play and are the 2015 city champions! Special recognition goes out to the following medal winners: Olenka K. won a bronze medal in Girls’ Singles; Jatin G. won a silver medal in Boys' Singles; Harry H. won a gold medal in Boys' Singles; and Kelly T. and Taylor W. won a gold medal in Girls' Doubles. YOUTH ACTION CLUB AND FREE THE CHILDREN

Are you interested in human rights and helping out in the community? Youth Action Club and Free the Children is a group of students who aim to raise awareness and funds for human rights through volunteering and participating in community events. Every year, charity

organizations are chosen to be supported by Youth Action Club and Free the Children and this year’s organizations are the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan and Raise Your Voice. The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan is dedicated to raise money towards enhancing children’s healthcare. Raise Your Voice is an international organization that was founded by Walter Murray graduate, Nick C. This group strives to empower youth through literacy programs, debate, and spoken word.

This year our club hosted and led a variety of different fundraisers and activities devoted to raising awareness on issues facing children in our world. Our year started off with “We Scare Hunger” where students volunteered to go out into the community and collect non-perishable food items for Saskatoon’s Food Bank. We also held our annual Coffeehouse where students showcased their talents and club members raised money through a bake sale and a Silent Auction. Later in the year, our Break Your Stereotype Day was an event where students created t-shirts that broke a stereotype that applied to them, which paired well with our “We Are Silent” for a day. “We Are Silent” was a campaign where students went silent for 24 hours in order to raise awareness for a group of people whose voices aren’t being heard. Finally, our final annual campaign is the famine, where students do not eat food for 29.75 hours to raise money for the chosen charity organizations. Students also had the opportunity to attend the Saskatchewan We Day and volunteer at a Children’s Hospital Foundation event! If you are interested in joining this group, new members are always welcome! Look for posters and announcements in September informing you on how to get involved in Walter Murray’s Youth Action Club and Free the Children.

Last year, collegiates adjusted the end-of-term schedule to include two periods, one for assessment and the other to prepare for the next day’s activities. After gathering feedback from students, parents, and staff, schools will be revising the schedule again. In January and June, we will have a single morning block dedicated to each of the five periods. Students are required to attend between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. There will be a fifteen minute break scheduled within this block, which will provide the opportuni-ty for culminating activities or assessments in each class.
