We offer a Dundee city council local competency in the following activities:

Semi Urban Walk Leadership (1 Day or 2 half days - up to 6 places)

Interested in taking groups of young people on walks in the local area, we offer a short course in managing walking groups in semi urban terrain. This may include walks around Balgay hill, Clatto Country Park, Camperdown Country Park, or sections of the Green Circular Path.

Orienteering (half day – 3 hours - up to 8 places)

We can support you to develop orienteering resources / activity that could be delivered in a local playground, park, playing field by school staff. We can show you some progressive games to teach the young people to read maps and find their way. We can also show you some games to develop numeracy and literacy skills.

Den Building/Fire Building/Cooking (half day – 3 hours - up to 8 places)

We can share some great ideas to teach the young people how to build their own shelters, and learn survival skills just like Ray Mears or Bear Grylls. We can also highlight considerations in building a wild camp fire and cooking things such as dough sticks and toasting marshmallows.

Forest Adventures (half day – 3 hours - up to 8 places)

Kids love playing in the woods, getting mucky and taking on adventurous challenges. We can show you some ideas around low level adventurous experiences for young people, including rope climbs, Blind Trails, blind fold games, swamp crossings, man hunt and rope swings.

We can come to your school/ nursery/ organisation and assist you to deliver your own Outdoor Learning experiences, this could be in your grounds/ playground or it could be in the local vicinity to your organisation.

WE CAN SUPPORT YOU TO DELIVER:

Archery (half day – 3 hours - up to 8 places)

We can assist you to deliver simple archery sessions. We don’t need to worry about using pointed arrows and we can show you sucker archery and flu-flu archery which are just as fun but without safety worries of using pointed arrows. Archery is a great activity for building numeracy skills, co-ordination, achievement and listening skills.

Team Games/ Team Building (half day – 3 hours - up to 8 places)

Ancrum can help you build a team challenge resource, just like the crystal maze. The kids have to work together to tackle simple challenges. These games build team work, problem solving, communication skills and co-ordination. These activities are low risk and can be delivered in a playground or playing field close to the school.

Arbroath Sea Cave Competency (Full Day training - up to 6 places, each participant will need to arrange a 1 day shadowing session with Ancrum Staff – F.O.C)

The sea cliffs by Arbroath are a fantastic resource with learning opportunities around Sea life, Birds, Geology and the adventures of visiting the hidden Dark Caves. There are rock pools to explore and lots of crabs, sea anemones, whelks and limpets. If teachers are looking for great field studies and a fun adventure venue, then we can induct teachers to the safety considerations of leading a group in this coastal environment.

Burn Walk(Full Day training - up to 6 places, each participant will need to arrange a 1 day shadowing session with Ancrum Staff – F.O.C)

A mini gorge walk. We have two sites where we take young people burn walking. This is a wet adventurous activity but can be done with out the need for a wetsuit as it is rarely more than knee deep. There is a definite opportunity for young people to get fully drenched and kids have a great time scrambling and splashing in the water.

Lowland Leader Award (Training & Assessment)

Interested in leading groups in non-technical lowland terrain, we can deliver the Mountain Leader Training UK – Lowland leader award. This is a national qualification and allows award holders to lead groups on forest walks, non-remote moorland and forest terrain. There is both training and assessment elements to this award.

First Aid We offer first Aid courses at various levels and standards including:

Emergency First Aid

(1 day) classroom based first aid. (Various dates as advertised)

REC (Rescue Emergency Care) (Various dates as advertised)

Two day first aid course, focused on first aid surrounding the outside environment. Particularly useful to those who may be exposed to situations outside, including PE staff and walk leaders.

NATIONALLY RECOGNISED QUALIFICATIONS

Cycling

We offer training and assessment of cycling leaders at a variety of levels:

Cycle Ride Leader

Allowing leader to supervise biking activities in playground, park and non technical terrain. It also allows award holders to lead journeys on recognised cycle paths.

Level 2 Mountain Bike Leader Award (Training & Assessment)

Level 2 Mountain bike leader award – Looking to lead group’s mountain biking off road? The Level 2 award allows holders to lead groups in non remote off road environments.

Velotech Bike Mechanic (Training & Assessment)

Looking to maintain a fleet of bikes, the Velotech bike mechanic gives you the skills to look after the bikes with a degree of confidence and competence.

Bronze – This course covers basic maintenance of a bike and identifying if a bike safe to use or not.

(1 Day)

Silver – A more comprehensive course covering the replacement and setup of most serviceable parts.

(2 days)

Canoeing and Kayaking We can offer training and assessment of personal paddling competence up to 2 star award. This is a pre-requisite of the levels one and two kayak/ canoe coach.

Accreditation for Pupils Within some of the activities we offer there are national recognised awards. These awards are progressive and can recognise achievement relatively quickly, in most cases after only one session. There is depth to all the awards below and young people could achieve a higher level award with longer term participation, for example in a block of activities.

Go Mountain Bike Recognising the acquisition of particular skills on a mountain bike.

Paddlepower Awards Recognising skill development in canoeing and kayaking.

NICAS Recognising achievement in Indoor Rock Climbing.

Snowlife Accreditation in skiing/snowboarding activities.

Outdoor Learning Cards (OLC) Training Pack Training – Free (schools must commit to buying the resource pack)

Course participants - min 8 / max 16 Cluster Schools approach preferred.

The Outdoor Learning Cards activities contribute directly to a wide range of educational and development aims for young people and cover four elements of Outdoor Learning that can be delivered on a school/youth club site and surrounding environment:

Orienteering - developing good map reading skills

Team Building and Problem Solving - how to challenge your young people

Bouldering - use of low level climbing walls

Journeying - local visits organised by young people

The Cards are supported by a Handbook and CD that provide detailed information on all aspects of activity delivery. All key elements for successful delivery are explored further in the 6 hour training course.
