OverviewThe Environmental Health & Safety Office (EH&S) is a service under UNCW Business Affairs. The unit offers educational and technical services in order to promote safety and sustainability on campus. The EH&S building is located on the UNCW campus at 1152 Plyler Drive.
EH&S staff
My task for EH&S was to create the campus greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for the fiscal years of 2015 to 2017. A GHG inventory is a reported amount of direct and indirect emissions generated by the activities of an entity. UNCW carries out inventories every several years to track emissions and determine progress on sustainability goals, particularly the UNC System policy calling for state institutions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Type of Entity
EH&S is a business service under UNCW Business Affairs, one of the major branches of the university.
UNCW is a state institution under the University of North Carolina System. The institution opened in 1946 and was officially elevated to a Comprehensive Level I University by the UNC Board of Governors in 1985.
Mission
The mission of EH&S is“to lead the university to a safe,
healthy, sustainable and disaster-resilient culture by providing
educational, technical and operational services to support the
campus community.”

Governing Board
At the institutional level, the UNCW Board of Trustees is comprised of 13 members who serve as advisors to the UNC Board of Governors and the UNCW chancellor to help the university with management and development manners.
The UNC Board of Governors is comprised of 32 members who help make policies carried out by the UNC General Administration that apply to the 17 campuses in the state system. Members serve four-year terms and are elected by the N.C. General Assembly.

Budget
University budget processes can occur with state offices or internally to UNCW. These processes help to ensure that the costs of university operations and expansion are covered.
EH&S receives funding from the biennial continuation budget process, which takes place August through October on even-numbered years. This process helps provide general operating funds to continue existing services and involves guidance from the N.C. Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM) as well as the UNC General Administration. The EH&S annual budget, which includes funding for purchased services and supplies, is $58,984.

Job Description
One of the primary tasks of creating the 2017 GHG Inventory was to correspond with university department contacts to collect emissions data. My correspondence included in-person meetings as well as follow-up emails and calls to ensure sufficient data was collected from each department. Additionally, I took part in weekly meetings with EH&S Sustainability staff to provide project updates and receive guidance on my methodology.
A weekly project meeting at the EH&S office attended by, starting left, Sustainability Captain Kat Pohlman, myself and EH&S Director Stan Harts
Job DescriptionI corresponded with the following UNCW faculty/staff to collect emissions data:
• Accounting Department• Disbursements Manager Laura Gore
• Department of Purchasing Services• Associate Director Delmar “Starkey”
McGowan
• Facilities Administration Department• Billing Clerk Terry Blake
• Office of Facilities• Energy Manager Steve Sharpe• AiM System Administrator Michael
Last
• Office of Institutional Research and Planning• Research Assistant Whitney Lawson
• Parking & Transportation Services• Parking and Transportation Manager
Ken Kaiser
• Other Contacts• Aramark Sustainability Coordinator
Marie Davis• Earth and Ocean Sciences Professor
Roger Shew
After collecting data, I studied previous GHG inventories and used Microsoft Excel to calculate emissions. My methodology was based on one developed by sustainability research firm The Good Company that was used in the 2014 UNCW GHG Inventory.
Additionally, I generated charts, proposed carbon reduction strategies and calculated emissions projections up to 2050. Charts were important for making numbers more digestible while projections provided an idea of the effort needed to achieve the UNC System carbon neutrality goal. I also compared emissions with historic numbers and the emissions of peer institutions.
Job Description
Screenshots of emissions data spreadsheets
After calculating emissions data, I organized the information in a report to be shared with campus and other interested parties. My content provided explanations on data collection, calculations, emissions trends and carbon reduction strategies. Additionally, I incorporated graphics for an aesthetic effect and provided appendices to elaborate on my methodology. Next, I created a one-page brief that generalizes the emissions data. These materials will be reviewed by the UNCW Office of University Relations (OUR) before being distributed and posted to the UNCW Sustainability website.
Job Description
Excerpts from the 2017 GHG Inventory Report
Job DescriptionThe project also involved special tasks that allowed me to gain a more well-rounded perspective of UNCW’s operations and the sustainability field in general. These tasks included:
• Toured the marine biotechnology facility, or MARBIONIC Building, at the UNCW Center for Marine Science (CMS) to learn about condensate collection features and other facility projects
• Researched AASHE* STARS** program standards in preparation of future EH&S projects
• Gained knowledge of energy policies through resources from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
*The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education**The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System
Energy Manager Steve Sharpe, left, providing me a tour of the MARBIONIC Building at CMS
Training
Training was self-implemented and involved studying previous GHG inventories in preparation of compiling emissions data and implementing calculations. The position also utilized presentation and technical skills acquired in previous academic experiences. These skills included communication of technical topics, data organization, knowledge of energy topics and use of the Microsoft Office suite.

Equipment
The primary equipment used for this project was the Microsoft Office suite. The software was selected because it was the suite used by The Good Company and it is the standard office software for the university.
• Microsoft Excel• Used to organize data, perform calculations,
create charts and make projections
• Microsoft Word• Used to create report
• Microsoft Publisher• Desktop publishing application used to create one-page brief
• Carnegie Mellon University Economic Input-Output Life Cycle Assessment• Online model helpful in determining the supply chain emissions of items
purchased by the university
SkillsetsRequired• Writing skills
• Needed for conveying technical information to a general audience• Knowledge of energy topics and emissions data
• Useful for understanding technical aspects of the project, including energy metrics and greenhouse gas chemical compositions
• Ability to work independently• Required because of project scope and busy schedules of EH&S staff
Acquired• Data analysis/spreadsheet skills
• Learned advanced Microsoft Excel functionalities • Practiced data and file organization
• Design skills• Learned to create compelling charts and graphics to illustrate data
Professional Reflection
Overall, I felt that I gained valuable experience and skills from my EH&S project that will serve me well in the future. I now possess a higher knowledge of greenhouse gas reporting standards and energy datasets that gives me confidence in taking on large-scale emissions projects going forward. I look forward to referencing this experience in interviews as one that showcases my motivation to pursue a career in the energy efficiency industry.
