You are talented. You are focused. You are drIVen.

Embrace who you are.

Who We are

Located on 74 beautiful acres near the heart of Winston-Salem, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts was

founded by the N.C. Legislature in 1963 and opened in 1965. As the nation’s first public arts conservatory, UNCSA is part

of North Carolina’s cultural legacy, which also includes the first state symphony and the first state art museum. Today,

UNCSA continues to uphold its mission of training talented students in the performing, visual and moving image arts to be

professional artists, with a reputation as one of the most renowned arts schools in the world.

We provide specific training within the five conservatories of Dance, Design and Production (including a high school Visual

Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. We emphasize learning by doing, on stage and screen, and behind the stage

and the lens. Students, faculty and guest artists present more than 300 public performances and screenings annually.

“I consider UNCSA to

be one of the top and

most important arts

schools in the country.”

Educational offErings

Spanning from ninth grade to graduate school, we offer programs that award a

high school diploma, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Undergraduate Arts

Certificate, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Music and a Professional Artist Certificate.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has ranked UNCSA among the top 100 “Best Values in

Public Colleges” for several years in a row.

“It is not enough to be trained as an artist, but as a person.

As an artist you will express yourself as a person, and the

richer you are as a person the better your expression will be.

So, in this framework, you will have academic study.”

Become Part of an artists’ community

UNCSA provides young artists with a community

in which they can thrive both as artists and as

students. We offer state-of-the-art training facilities,

equipment, and performance and screening venues

both on campus and in downtown Winston-Salem,

along with an on-campus dining hall, library, fitness

center and more. Whether on campus or in Winston-

Salem, students find themselves immersed in art and

surrounded by other artists.

Home of the first arts council in the nation,

Winston-Salem is fittingly known as the City of

Arts and Innovation. This city offers young artists a

flourishing arts community, from the Arts District

downtown, to the Reynolda House Museum of

American Art at Wake Forest University, to the

Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and

much more. Here, our students have the chance to

focus on themselves, their art and their education,

and ultimately graduate as a well-rounded citizen-

artist, ready to turn their passion into a profession.

admissions criteria

Your admission to UNCSA is based upon a combination of your artistic

talent, academic achievement, and potential.

We are looking for much more than just impressive academic test scores. We’ll first

evaluate your audition, portfolio or interview, looking at your artistic talent and your

potential for development in the arts. If we feel you could be successful in our program,

then we’ll examine your academic record, including transcripts, test scores and

personal references.

All in all, we seek well-rounded individuals whose passion for their craft translates into

solid artistic and academic development and, ultimately, a successful career. To best

prepare you for a demanding and competitive career in the arts, we remain serious

about your training and the maturation of your abilities. During your time here, you

can expect to develop the self-discipline, work ethic and emotional resilience that will

be critical assets in any career you choose.
