Mt. Zion Primary School and United Church in Montego Bay, Jamaica

In May, ULC ini ated the instrumental music program, providing more than 30 new and refurbished instruments for the newly formed band. Coupled with this endeavor, ULC provided funding for the renova on of an exis ng structure on the Mt. Zion campus to create a music room for the band. In addi on to the building, ULC funds an i nerant band teacher.

In July, ULC began construc on of a fence-enclosed basketball court for the school and community. This ini a ve fulfi lls a long- me vision of Pastor Harvey to create an athle c opportunity where children can enhance their skills as well as build friendship and pride in their community. This project was completed in the fall.

In July and August, 20 representa ves and volunteers of ULC and The Links, Inc., along with 10 students and four faculty members from Georgia Perimeter College, sponsored and conducted a two-week summer workshop series for

the students and community. A third week consisted of a sports camp for the children in football and criquet.

Some 75 students were enrolled in the summer camp that off ered instruc on in vocal and instrumental music, dance, photography, speech and drama, literacy, chess and sports. A micro-economics class was off ered for more than 40 adult residents to begin a discussion and promote the idea of business development and entrepreneurship to create sorely needed jobs. At the end of the workshop series, Mt. Zion students performed in a closing ceremony -showcasing their newfound skills and used a theme to commemorate Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence.

A fall project included the purchase and installa on of a state-of-the art playground for Mt. Zion Primary School. Complete with a climbing wall, slide, swings, fort and rope ladder, the playground brought laughter and fun to the children as soon as the ribbon was cut and they were allowed to use it. The playground will provide addi onal opportuni es for physical educa on and development.

third annual mission trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Supporters and volunteers purchased, donated and collected a huge supply of clothing, books and school supplies, housewares, spor ng equipment, shoes and other items that were distributed to more than 100 Mt. Zion parents as well as members of the greater community in the form of a free community “fl ea market.” The theme of the mission for the children was “self esteem.” Volunteers conducted workshops for students at all grade levels. All male students were given a clothing ou it and a soccer ball (donated by the 100 Black Men of America, DeKalb GA Chapter); all girls were gi ed with an ou it and a Black doll (donated by Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., Douglasville, GA chapter and ULC). A business development workshop, ini ated in the

summer program, was revisited with 11 adult residents a ending. ULC plans to off er scholarships to select adults for formal classes and training. Thirty volunteers par cipated in the mission eff orts. ULC provided lunch for all par cipants.

The Mt. Zion leadership also sponsored a closing program and dedica on of the three structures funded by ULC. A endees included dignitaries from the Ministry of Educa on, the business community and parents and residents of Mt. Zion.

New Partnership with Maroon Town Primary School in Jamaica ULC has begun a new partnership with

Chatsworth Primary School in Jamaica. A 2013 summer program will be conducted by ULC and Ga. Perimeter College in July focusing on reading, math, computer skills and recrea on. Ga. Perimeter will send twelve students and at least two faculty. In addi on to working with the primary students, GPC students will experience the rich culture of Jamaica and the famous Maroons by way of a tour and interac on with the local Maroons. ULC’s plans for this year at Chatsworth include: Regrading and backfi lling their playground; providing books, supplies and computer so ware to enhance reading and math skills; providing Internet access; procuring white boards, a printer, a projector and screen, and basic school supplies. In December, ULC and The Champion Newspaper donated six computers, monitors, keyboards and so ware to the school. All children received soccer balls (boys) and Black dolls (girls).

mentors. ULC is in the process of expanding this program to the children of Sparks Chris an Academy and the Harvest Lodge school and will include foster children. The goal is to develop cri cal thinking skills in young children so that they will excel in school and ul mately earn and win scholarships to college through academics.

All-Day Progressive FUN/FUNDraiser

In advance of the third annual November/December mission trip, supporters and volunteers par cipated in an all-day progressive party fundraiser. Venues included breakfast and tours at the estate and entrepreneurial center of Bill and Ma e Allen, including the elegant mansion, hotel and conference center in Lithonia, Ga. The second stop was the Flat Rock Archives and museum (ancestral home of comedian and actor Chris Tucker) that houses and has available for examina on records and photos of slaves and slavery in Georgia. The next stop was Lake Oconee and the home of Gregg and Be y Leve where guests were treated to boat rides, lunch and a tour of the luxury lake home. The event ended with a gathering at the Glenns’ home for tours and an evening of dining, dancing and further explana on of the mission of the Earl and Carolyn Glenn Founda on.

WHO WE AREUnconditional Love For Children, Inc. (ULC) provides opportunities for disadvantaged, orphaned and rejected children to live holistic lives. The ultimate goal is to empower and uplift children through educational enrichment and incentive programs, life skills training, athletics and access to health services.

The Earl and Carolyn Glenn Foundation, Inc., provides resources to fund and operate Uconditional Love for Children programs. The current focus involves programming for the schools and communities of Mt. Zion in Montego Bay and Chatsworth Primary in Maroon Town, Jamaica. In DeKalb County, a scholarship program is in place for high school students desiring to attend Greenforest-McCalep Christian Academy and a chess initiative is underway for children to aid in sharpening their critical thinking skills. A “self esteem” pilot is being developed to arm Black youth with knowledge, skills and resources to combat the challenges associated with being Black in America. As reported by CNN, the ills documented in the Black Doll Project of the 50’s are still prevalent in America and detrimental to positive “self awareness” and ultimately a happy, healthy and successful existence.
