 1. Replacing or fixing broken equipment

Issue description: Youth facilities have broken equipment from pool tables to drum sets. This

includes furniture, recreation spaces and fitness areas. Many of the Youth Centers are underfunded and find it difficult to replace their broken equipment. The current condition of this equipment can cause severe injury to youth and is a factor in the low attendance at Youth Centers.

Recommended solution: Have biannual equipment inspections from a Garrison/Region staff to

check the extent of equipment damage. Fund replacement or the fixing of equipment.

 2. Unhealthy on-post restaurants

Issue description: On-Post restaurants offer a limited variety of meal options. Currently all

installations do not have restaurants and the installations that do, tend to offer unhealthy choices.

Recommended solution: Ensure every Garrison has at least one restaurant that offers healthy

choices. Support Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign by providing healthy

food selections on Garrisons.

 3. Lack of Garrison Driver's Education Classes

Issue description: Teens approaching 16 years of age look forward to the opportunity to

drive. If a Driver’s Education program is not offered at a Garrison, teens have to seek out training through outside private and state agencies. This process can be very inconvenient because some only offer month-long courses that interfere with extracurricular activities and/or other educational opportunities.

Recommended solution: Coordinate a driver's education program through SKIES or the School

Liaison Officer via school districts. Have the local school or Youth Center sponsor a Driver‘s

Education program.

 4. There is no Medical Center on Fort Greely

Issue description: The closest hospital that provides emergency medical care is over 100

miles away. Although there is a small clinic, there are no specialists outfitted to handle emergency services. When an emergency case occurs, Soldiers and Families must wait up to 40 minutes or more to be medically evacuated by helicopter or ambulance or they must drive to Fairbanks.

Recommended solution: Open up the Garrison Aid Stations to Families. Build an appropriate medical center on post. Open a medical office for physicians within Delta Junction that

would provide comprehensive emergency services.

 5. Attracting teens to the Teen Centers

Issue description: There is not enough teen involvement at Garrison Teen Centers. This is

primarily due to poor equipment, unappealing advertising, lack of interest by the community and the lack of awareness of the various teen programs available. We understand Teen Centers are funded based on youth participation. However, It is hard for centers to be successful if they are not seen by teens as a appealing place to gather.

Recommended solution: Create better marketing strategies to include a CYS Services commercial. Change the names of local Teen Centers to appeal to youth. Introduce teens to the many opportunities available at Teen Centers. Buy better equipment.

 1. Deployments take away time spent with the family

Issue description: Deployments impact the entire family to include: Soldiers, spouses, children,

and even the family pets. The reasons for deployment can vary from conflicts abroad, search and rescue missions, disaster relief and issues impacting national security at home. While deployments are unavoidable, the negative impact they have on the family can be avoided .

Recommended solution: Create more opportunities for families to stay in contact with deployed loved

ones via Skype, e-mail, handwritten letters, Facebook and telephone calls. Conduct camps that assist geographically dispersed youth to connect

with other Army Reserve, National Guard and active duty youth.

 2. Increased Domestic Violence due to repeated deployments

Issue description:

When Soldiers return from deployment they expect their family to operate like their unit and often respond with violence in stressful situations.

National Guard families are also more impacted due to the lack of support systems.

Soldiers may also feel they are no longer needed when they return to normal family life

Recommended solution: Encourage recognition of the difference from family life to workplace. Stricter regulation of intoxicating substances for newly returned Soldiers to

prevent long term dependence and initial loss of control. Provide counseling to newly returning Soldiers and their Families to

address issues and foster respect for loved ones.
