    UNCC Spends Millions on New Projects

    If you are on campus anytime during the day, chances are you will encounter the

    unpleasant ear-splitting sounds of construction trucks and cranes moving along the forty-

    niner grounds.

    Every morning at :!! a.m., I am woken up "y the "eeping sounds of the

    construction trucks#, engineering sophomore Jake $llison living in %awthorne

    %all stated.

    $ccording to &acilities 'anagement, there are currently over () construction pro*ects

    that are either in the design, planning, or construction stage. +hese pro*ects all range from

    ,)!! to (,(/,0 with ( pro*ects valued at over ,!!!,!!!. $llison stated that he

    "elieved that the 1niversity was spending too much money on pointless construction

    pro*ects. %e "rought up the outdated computers in the li"rary and how he felt that the

    university could manage its money "etter.

    $llison is not the only student who holds this "elief. +wenty students were asked how

    they felt the university was managing its money and / of those students "elieved that

    money was not "eing used wisely.

    +uition is "eing raised, meal plans are "eing raised, and housing rates are "eing

    raised and we still have outdated technology in academic "uildings and even in

    the li"rary#, 2icholas 3isano, a 1244 sophomore stated.

    +he "ulk of the money "eing spent on construction pro*ects on campus is going to new

    residence halls. +he new residence hall, 'artin %all, currently under construction in East

    5illage alone costs (,(/,0, which raises the 6uestion if spending this amount of

    money on new residence halls is worth the costly price.

    'any students "elieve that there are more important things to "e spending money on, "ut

    what a"out faculty7 %ope 8ingley of the office of registrar "elieves that the new

    residence halls are completely worth the enormous cost that they "ring. $ccording to

    2icholas 4ovington who works for %ousing and 8esidence life, living in 'artin %all will

    cost a student ,9! per semester, making the !/ person residence hall the most

    epensive residence hall on campus. $fter doing the math, it will take the university

    a"out ( years to earn the (,(/,0 "ack. 4ovington stated that the new residence

    halls that are either under construction or under design are critical for the universities

    future.

    'ore and more students are making their way to 1244, I mean, this years

    freshman class has "een the largest that the university has ever seen. ;e have to

    house these students and it is the universities responsi"ility to provide enough

    housing for everyone who wishes to live on campus#, 4ovington stated.

    ;ith the never-ending rises in tuition and other costs, many students have felt the need to

    closely monitor university spending to see eactly where their money is going. 'any

    students, like $llison and 3isano, "elieve that university spending on the continuous

    construction around campus should "e spent more wisely. In contrast, others like 8ingley

    and 4ovington hold strong opinions that the need for new residence halls is a necessity to

    the university.
