Title IX: The Spirit of the Law

Amy Zavadil, Ph.D.Associate Dean for Equity

Title IX CoordinatorBarnard College

Title IX is about equitable access to education and applies toeducational institutions. While many of the current concernsand headlines about liability and equitable rights focus oninvestigation and adjudication of sexual assault betweenstudents, which is incredibly important, Title IXencompasses much more in compliance expectations inresponse to its 37 words: “No person in the United Statesshall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in,be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discriminationunder any education program or activity receiving Federalfinancial assistance.”

Progress demands that institutions focus not only onresponding to reports but how we respond to such reports, with dignity and equity, and more importantly what else isbeing done to create an environment free fromdiscrimination and harassment. This keynote will provide abroad overview of compliance considerations for Title IXCoordinators in practice, calling for a holistic, inclusiveapproach that attends to the environmental and structuralfactors, acknowledges thedynamics of trauma and the complexity of human behavior,as well as training members of the community at all levels, addressing behaviors that may create or perpetuate harmfulconditions.
