SincehestartedworkingatBiltmore12yearsago,PouporemovedthroughtheranksintheCuratorialDepartmentandnowleadsateamoffourtoprestorers.Everydayhespendsonthejobisgearedtowardpreservingthehome’slegacy.Pouporealsoworksonseveralspecialprojects,includingtherestorationofBiltmoreEstate’ssecond-floorlivinghall,andhepreparedaTiffanylampexhibitthat opened this year.

He admits that he loves the variety but is especially fond of studying the home. “ThebestpartofmyjobisgettingtimetoresearchtheVanderbilts,andtheirfriends,andemployees,”Pouporesaid.“It’salsoprettycoolthatIcangointoanyroominthe250-roomhouse.”

Tanya Harris ’00TanyaHarrisarrivedatUNCAshevilleknowingshewantedtobe a lawyer. Butshehadnoideawhatkindoflawtopursue.ThenshetookacoursewithPsychologyProfessorPamLaughon,whereshehelpedsuccessfullyreverseadeathpenaltyconviction.“Thatgavememyfirstintroductiontocriminallaw,anditwasprettyinteresting,”shesaid.

NowamagnacumlaudegraduateofN.C.CentralLawSchool,HarrisservesasanassistantpublicdefenderinAsheville,representingthosewhocannotaffordattorneys.Herdaysarepackedwithcases,butshealwayssetsasidetimetoworkwithyoungclients.

“What is really important to me is helping people out, especially juveniles. Harrissaidoneofthekeystoherlawschoolsuccesswaslearningtimemanagementandgoalsettingwhileatrack-and-fieldathleteoncampusatUNCAsheville. She became one of the top sprinters in the university’s history, and wonanumberofBigSouthConferencechampionships.
