Por sus principios filosóficos, fundacionales y misionales, su naturaleza jurídica y alto compromiso social, la Universidad Libre invierte sus recursos económicos en el mejoramiento continuo hacia la excelencia académica y propende por el acceso a la educación superior de todos los sectores sociales.

Ofrece programas de educación superior en áreas del conocimiento como: Administración, Contaduría, Derecho, Economía, Educación, Filosofía, Ingeniería y Salud, entre otras.

En la Institución se forman 33 mil estudiantes en todos los niveles académicos, desde educación preescolar, básica y media hasta pregrado, especializaciones, maestrías y doctorado.

“La Universidad Libre” is a not-for-profit higher education institution in Colombia, which is based in Bogotá D.C. and branches in the cities of Barranquilla, Cali, Cartagena, Cucuta, Pereira and Socorro.

Based on its philosophical principles, vision, mission and social commitment, the university invests its financial resources and efforts striving for excellence and the achievement of high quality standards of education accessible to people from all social statuses.

The University offers programs in diverse areas of study such as: management, accounting, law, economics, education, philosophy, engineering, and health care.

The institution enrolls 33,000 students across all levels of education: from preschool, elementary and secondary education to undergraduate, graduate and phD programs.

Los orígenes de la Universidad Libre se remontan a los años finales del siglo XIX, cuando ilustres intelectuales del pensamiento liberal fundaron, en 1890, la Universidad Republicana. Con el tiempo, por la misma fuerza de su inspiración ideológica, se le denominó Universidad Libre y quedó legalmente constituida el 30 de octubre de 1913.

De forma definitiva comenzó a funcionar en 1923, con las visionarias palabras de su fundador, el general Benjamín Herrera:

“Quiero llamar la atención de forma especial sobre la carac-terística que debe singularizar este vasto establecimiento docente con que el liberalismo quiere dotar al país: la Universidad Libre no debe ser un foco de sectarismo ni una fuente perturbadora de la conciencia individual; este moderno establecimiento debe ser una escuela universal sin restricciones ni imposiciones; este hogar espiritual debe ser amplísimo templo abierto a todas las orientaciones del magisterio civilizador y a todas las sanas ideas en materia de educación; nada que ate la inteligencia ante los prejuicios y preocupaciones, pero nada tampoco que atente contra la libertad y la conciencia del individuo. No vamos a fundar una cátedra liberal sino una amplísima aula en la que se agiten y se muevan con noble libertad todos los temas científicos y los principios filosóficos aceptados por la moderna civilización”.

Así, desde su fundación, la Universidad Libre se ha orientado por el ideario liberal y se ha inspirado en la democracia, la justicia e inclusión social, la libertad de pensamiento y culto, la autonomía universitaria, la tolerancia, el pluralismo, la libertad de cátedra y la dignidad humana.

“La Universidad Libre” beginnings date back to the end of the 19th century, when well-known liberal intellectuals founded the Republican University in 1890. More than twenty years later, on October 30, 1913, the university was officially established under a new name that reflected the founders’ political and philosophical ideologies: “Universidad Libre”.

The university officially opened in 1923, with these words from its visionary founder, General Benjamin Herrera:

“I want to call special attention to the characteristics that ought to distinguish this grand educational establishment that liberalism offers to the Colombian people: «La Universidad Libre» should not be a seat of sectarianism nor a disturbing fountain of individual conscience. This modern establishment should be a universal school without restrictions nor impositions. This spiritual home should be a grand temple open to all ideologies of teaching and to all sound ideas related to education. It should not bind knowledge to prejudices or worries, but nor should it attack the liberty and consciousness of the individual. We are not founding a liberal academy but an ample classroom, in which scientific topics and philosophical principles accepted by modern society can move and stir with noble liberty”.

Thus, since it was founded, “La Universidad Libre” has been led by liberal ideology and has found inspiration in democracy, social inclusion and justice, freedom of thought and religion, educational autonomy, tolerance, pluralism, academic freedom and human dignity.

La ciudad de Barranquilla, capital del Departamento del Atlántico, llamada Puerta de Oro de Colombia y fundada en 1629, está ubicada sobre la margen occidental del río Magdalena, a 7,5 kilómetros de la desembocadura en el mar Caribe. En 1993 fue erigida constitucionalmente en Distrito Especial, Industrial y Portuario. Es uno de los puertos marítimos y fluviales más importantes y activos de Colombia y el principal centro comercial, industrial y cultural de la región. Su desarrollo se centra en cuatro sectores productivos: la industria, los servicios, el comercio y el transporte.

El clima de Barranquilla es seco y tropical, con una vegetación propia de la sequedad. Su temperatura promedio es 27°C. De sus principales sitios turísticos se destacan:Las Bocas de Ceniza y el río Magdalena, el muelle de Puerto Colombia y el zoológico.

El Carnaval de Barranquilla es una de las fiestas populares más significativas de Colombia. En 2001 fue declarado “Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación” por el Congreso Nacional y en 2003 “Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad” por la UNESCO.

En esta acogedora ciudad, la Universidad Libre tiene una Seccional que funciona en dos sedes, una en la zona céntrica y la otra en el norte, kilómetro siete, antigua vía a Puerto Colombia. Se destaca como casa de estudios líder en educación superior de calidad para la región Caribe.

Founded in 1629 and known as Colombian’s golden gate, Barranquilla is the capital of the Atlántico Department, Barranquilla lies strategically next to the delta of the Magdalena River, 7.5 kilometers from its mouth at the Caribbean Sea, serving as port for river and maritime transportation within Colombia. It is also the main industrial, shopping, educational and cultural center of the Caribbean Region of Colombia. In 1993 was constitutionally declared as industrial port and special district. Barranquilla’s economic activity is concentrated mainly in industry, commerce, services and transportation.

Barranquilla has a dry tropical climate with vegetation native to arid zones. The average temperature is 80oF. Among the must-see tourist destinations in the city is “Bocas de Ceniza”, the pier of Puerto Colombia and the Barranquilla Zoo.

The Carnival of Barranquilla is one of the most remarkable and popular festivals in Colombia. In 2001 it was declared a National Cultural Heritage event by the Colombian National Congress and in 2003 a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

At this branch, “La Universidad Libre” has two campuses: one in the central area of the city and one along the old Puerto Colombia highway (7 km). The university stands out for its academic quality in the Caribbean region.

s e C C i O n a lB o g o t áBogotá, capital del Departamento de Cundinamarca y Distrito Capital de Colombia, fue fundada en 1537, está en el centro del país, en la cordillera oriental, ramal de los Andes americanos. Se caracteriza por su clima frío de alta montaña. En general, la temperatura es 14°C.

Presenta un moderno desarrollo urbanístico en hábitat, industria y centros comerciales y está rodeada ecológicamente por vistosos paisajes de montaña. Es escenario de importantes actos culturales y sede de destacados centros de educación superior.

Bogotá fue designada como Capital Iberoamericana de la Cultura 2007, distinción de la Unión de Ciudades Capitales de Iberoamérica (UCCI).

En esta ciudad cosmopolita, la Universidad Libre abrió sus puertas el 13 de febrero de 1923. Es el domicilio principal de la Institución, con dos campus, uno en el centro histórico y cultural, llamado La Candelaria y otro ubicado al occidente, vía al aeropuerto internacional Eldorado, lindando con el centro ecológico Jardín Botánico José Celestino Mutis, llamado del Bosque.

Capital of Colombia and the country’s most important city – Bogota-. It was founded on 1537. It is located in the Cundinamarca Department and it is characterized by its high mountain and cold climate, where the average temperature is 57 oF.

In this city one can find modern urban development in terms of housing, industry and large malls. Surrounded by mountain landscapes, the city also serves as the stage for important cultural events and it is the seat of many prominent educational institutions.

Bogotá was voted the Ibero-American Capital of Culture in 2007 by the UCCI (Union of Capital Cities of Ibero-America).

“La Universidad Libre” opened its doors in Bogotá on February 13, 1923. Since then, Bogotá has served as the University’s headquarters and its main location, where it has two campuses: one in the historical and cultural center, La Candelaria, and the other situated west, next to the José Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens and close to El Dorado International airport.

s e C C i O n a lC a l iCali es la capital del Departamento del Valle del Cauca, fue fundada en 1536. Está ubicada al suroccidente colombiano y tiene un clima cálido de 24°C.

Santiago de Cali es, además, una ciudad empresarial cuya infraestructura ofrece todas las facilidades para los negocios, el alojamiento, las compras, la gastronomía y la diversión. La actividad cultural y artística permanente muestra su máxima expresión cada dos años en el Festival de Arte y se complementa cada diciembre con la programación de la Feria de Cali.

También conocida como “La Sultana del Valle” tiene una bella arquitectura urbana, punto de convergencia de las realizaciones contemporáneas y los barrios tradicionales, donde se conservan museos, iglesias y teatros declarados hoy monumentos nacionales. Estos valores arquitectónicos están en el más bello marco natural formado porlos cerros de Cristo Rey, las Tres Cruces y la Colina de San Antonio.

En esta importante ciudad la Universidad Libre inició sus actividades académicas el 15 de diciembre de 1973. En la región pacífica de Colombia gozan de gran reconocimiento sus programas, entre ellos, Ciencias de la Salud, por lo que desde 2010, en asocio con Comfenalco Valle, adquirió la Clínica Rafael Uribe Uribe para prestar servicios en los niveles de mediana y alta complejidad. Cali, the capital of the Valle del Cauca Department, was founded on 1536. It is located in the southwestern part of the country, and boasts a warm climate with an average temperature of 75oF.

The city is one of the most important sites in the country for business, accommodation, shopping, restaurants, and night life. Arts and culture are also part of the city life with permanent exhibitions and the Arts Festival which is held every two years. Additionally, the well-known Feria de Cali takes place in December.

The most interesting places in “la Sultana del Valle” –as it is known– include traditional neighborhoods, museums, churches, and theaters recognized as national monuments, all of them framed by the Cristo Rey, Tres Cruces and San Antonio Hills.

The university began its academic activity on December 15, 1973. In the Pacific region of the country, “La Universidad Libre” has great recognition for the Schools of Management and Accounting Sciences, and Medicine and Health Sciences. In 2010, “La Universidad Libre” in association with Comfenalco Valle made of the Rafael Uribe Uribe Hospital one of the School of Medicine facilities. A new campus is currently being built at the “Valle de Lili”.

Ha sido reconocida por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Histórico y Cultural de la Humanidad, título que merece por su rico pasado, desde que fue fundada en 1533 por el español Don Pedro de Heredia. Cartagena es el primer destino turístico nacional e internacional, es el principal puerto del Caribe y uno de los polos de desarrollo industrial del país, especialmente en actividades de petroquímica.

La “Ciudad Amurallada” fue declarada Patrimonio Nacional de Colombia en 1959.

Su temperatura está entre los 23°C y los 33°C, registra una humedad relativa de 90 por ciento, con lluvias en abril, mayo, octubre y noviembre.

Cartagena de Indias tiene una mezcla arquitectónica histórica fascinante por su variedad. Estructuras militares como las murallas, baluartes y fuertes, se pueden observar al lado de una bien conservada ciudad colonial y republicana.

En esta enigmática y fascinante ciudad, la Universidad Libre tiene una sede en la que ofrece programas de pregrado y posgrado con proceso creciente de consolidación y reconocimiento social.

Capital of the Bolívar Department, Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1553 by Pedro de Heredia. Cartagena’s colonial walled city and fortress were designated a UNESCO World heritage site in 1984. Cartagena remains one of the most important national and international touristic centers and a main site for the petrochemical industry. The Walled City was declared a Colombian National Heritage Site in 1959.

Cartagena averages around 90 percent humidity and the temperature remains between 73oF and 91oF all year round. Additionally, the city experiences rainy seasons from April to May and from October to November.

Cartagena de Indias has a fascinating architectural variety that evidence a well-preserved colonial and republican city.

Today, the university in Cartagena offers a number of undergraduate and graduate programs and it is working towards obtaining higher academic standards and social recognition.

s e C C i O n a lC ú c u t aCúcuta es la capital de Norte de Santander. Ubicada en la frontera con Venezuela, fue fundada en 1733. Esta ciudad se destaca por el comercio binacional y la industria manufacturera. Entre sus atractivos turísticos están el Parque Grancolombiano y la Catedral San José. La ciudad tiene un clima cálido seco, refrescado por las brisas que vienen del Lago de Maracaibo, con una temperatura promedio de 28°C.

Es un importante centro económico, histórico, cultural y deportivo. Queda en el oriente de su departamento, en la Cordillera Oriental (rama de la Cordillera de los Andes). Su terminal aérea, el Aeropuerto Internacional Camilo Daza, es de las más transitadas del país.

Esta zona es clave para la historia de Colombia. Allí se registraron hechos de trascendencia como la Batalla de Cúcuta, que dio inicio a la Campaña Admirable de Simón Bolívar y el Congreso de Cúcuta, donde fue creada la Gran Colombia. La Universidad Libre tiene en Cúcuta una Seccional que empezó a funcionar en 1973, cuando decidió ampliar la acción docente, investigativa y de extensión, al Departamento de Norte de Santander.

Cúcuta is the capital of the Norte de Santander Department. It is located in northeastern Colombia, along the country’s border with Venezuela and it was founded in 1733. This city is now known for its commercial relations with Venezuela and for its manufacturing industries. Among its tourist attractions are the Gran Colombia Park and the San José Cathedral.

The city has a warm, dry climate with an average temperature of 82 oF, with cool breezes that come from Lake Maracaibo.

The city is an outstanding historical, economic, cultural and sports center situated in the Norte de Santander Department on the eastern side of the Andes. The Camilo Daza International Airport is one of the most traveled.

Several important events that forged Colombia’s history took place in city: the battle of Cucuta initiated Simon Bolivar’s campaign and the Congress of Cucuta, where the Greater Colombia was created

Es la ciudad más poblada de la región del Eje Cafetero y conforma el área metropolitana de centro-occidente junto con los municipios de Dosquebradas y la Virginia. Su clima promedio es 22°C y puede variar de cálido a medio, frío y páramo.

Alberga numerosas empresas públicas, instituciones y organismos del estado colombiano. Entre los sitios turísticos locales de mayor interés están el Zoológico Matecaña, la Laguna de Otún y el Nevado de Santa Isabel.

La economía cafetera se constituyó en la oportunidad de vinculación de la ciudad al comercio internacional, que le permitió que se consolidara como una ciudad comercial y prestadora de servicios, con un proceso de urbanización acelerado y un moderado crecimiento industrial. Se ha caracterizado por el ascenso constante de sus principales indicadores sociales y económicos, lo que ha llevado a la creación de valores como la hospitalidad, la solidaridad y la tolerancia y la ha proyectado como una ciudad pluricultural.

En esta región de pueblos tradicionales, amplias zonas verdes, destinos naturales, parques ecológicos, baños termales y gente amable, además de su estratégica ubicación que la hace paso obligatorio para comerciantes y viajeros que se dirigen al occidente del país, la Universidad Libre fundó la Seccional Pereira en 1971, contribuyendo de manera importante al desarrollo y progreso regional del Eje Cafetero.

Pereira is the capital city of the Risaralda Department. It is the most populous city in the central western region of the country, known as the Coffee-Grower Axis along with Dosquebradas and La Virginia. The climate varies between warm and somewhat cold with an average temperature of 71°F.

It is base of a number of public companies and state institutions. Some of the most interesting tourist sites include the Matecaña Zoo, Lake Otun, and the Nevado Santa Isabel.

The production of coffee dominates the economy of the region and, with the time, it became into the product that introduced the city into the international market. Thus, the city is now a business and services center, in a rapid urban development process and industrial growth, as well.

Its growing social and economic indicators have resulted in the strengthening of values such us solidarity, tolerance and hospitality, projecting the city asa multicultural one.

Surrounded by traditional towns, wide meadows, natural destinations, eco parks, hot springs, with kind people, and being strategically situated for tradersand tourists, “La Universidad Libre” founded this branch in 1971 and, from here,also contributes to the progress and development of the region.

s e C C i O n a lS o c o r r oMunicipio del Departamento de Santander, El Socorro fue fundado en 1681. Está localizado a 264 Kilómetros de Bogotá. Tuvo gran influencia en la historia de Colombia porque allí empezó la Revolución de los Comuneros de 1781, contra el imperio español.

Su estructura central se basa en el sector agropecuario con destacada producción de ganado y de cafés especiales y la industrialización del sector panelero. Hay sitios de interés como la Casa de la Cultura, la Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Socorro y la Hacienda Majavita. Su temperatura es 24°C.

La Universidad Libre Seccional Socorro nace en 1973. En 1998 inaugura la actual sede del Campus Majavita, lugar donde se ofrecen programas de pregrado y posgrado, y se lleva a cabo todo el proceso de producción del Café Majavita, desde la planta hasta la taza, un producto orgánico y de exportación con sello internacional.

Founded on 1681, Socorro is a town and a Municipality in the Santander Department, located 264 kilometers from Bogota, Socorro has an important place in Colombian history, as the location where the “Revolt of the Comuneros” began in 1781.

The region’s economy is based on agriculture, livestock, specialty coffees and the sugarcane industry. Sites of interest include the House of Culture, the Cathedral ofOur Lady of Socorro and the Hacienda Majavita. Its average tempeture is 24°C.

The Socorro branch was opened in 1973. The present location of the university, the Majavita Campus, was inaugurated in 1998, and offers undergraduate and graduate programs. Additionally, it is where the entire production process of Café Majavita - an organic, export-quality coffee- takes place.
