The Mens Shed kicked off in Coffs in 2010 thanks to support from several Rotary Clubs and CHESS employment who covered the first three years of operating costs for a premises in Marcia Street. President Ken Ryan explained it was a great start with help from right across the community, but the crunch came in 2016 when the committee was faced with a $26,000 rent bill. The men rallied & approached Council with a plan to build a shed. Council answered the call and provided land on Howard Street with a 20 year lease. In February 2017 the new 40 x 20 metre shed was completed thanks to generous support from Boral, concreters galore and Nu Style Sheds. Its fitted out for metalworking and wood working but the primary focus is mens wellbeing and health. With over 130 members the Shed welcomes any men 18 years or over. Ken was pleased that the Shed provides mentoring to transfer skills including to many NDIS clients who are thriving under the wing of a skilled senior tradesmen. The Shed is happy to undertake repairs and does a lot of furniture work including French polishing. to create the framework for everyday life. Each contains a family-sized tent that protects people from the elements and provides a safe space in which people can start to recover from physical and emotional trauma. The contents differ depending on the disaster and the climate, but items such as solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets and cooking utensils help start the process of creating a home.

International Toast: The Rotary Club of Port Moresby

Mike Woods, a former member of the Rotary Club of Bournemouth in the UK, arrived in Port Moresby and decided that it was time to start Rotary in Papua New Guinea.

The Rotary Club of Port Moresby was chartered on 19 September 1957. Port Moresby and the other clubs in PNG are the only clubs in District 9600 that do not have the Rotary Club of Brisbane as their earliest ancestor. The Club raises funds from Jumbo Tennis, Defensive Driving,

RYLA, a Rotary Golf Day, and a Games Night. The Club’s main programs are the school desk program, greening Port Moresby, City Mission, Hospital Visits, the Early Learning Centre, Donations in Kind and Rotary Against Malaria.
