Health Services Research C. Daniel Mullins, PhD, professor in the Departmentof Pharmaceutical Health Services Research(PHSR), has been named chair of the departmentfollowing a nationwide search. Dr. Mullins has beena trusted member of the School of Pharmacy'sfaculty for nearly two decades and has servedPHSR in many capacities. He is an accomplishedresearcher, a dedicated teacher and mentor, and athoughtful administrator. I am confident that he willbe a stellar leader for PHSR as it works to expandits programmatic research within the department andacross campus, and as it shapes the next generation of pharmaceuticalhealth services researchers through its nationally renowned graduateprogram. Dr. Mullins, who joined the School of Pharmacy faculty in1995, received his bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Instituteof Technology and completed his doctorate at Duke University. He hasserved the PHSR department in many capacities over the years,including as graduate program director, as a previous chair, and mostrecently as interim chair following the retirement of former chair IleneZuckerman, PharmD, PhD, in December 2013. School of Pharmacy Launches AdvancedPharmacy Technician Program The School of Pharmacy has launched a new certificate program thatwill help pharmacy technicians with three to five years of workexperience advance their practice and take their careers to the nextlevel. Called PharmTechX, the program began July 1 and is availablethrough the School's Center for Innovative Pharmacy Solutions (CIPS)Knowledge Enterprise, an innovative online learning platform that willallow pharmacy technicians to move through the program at their ownpace and at times most convenient for them. Hospital and communitypharmacy leaders across the state of Maryland have recognized theneed for advanced pharmacy technician training that allows currenttechnicians to expand their capabilities, which will enable pharmaciststo spend more time delivering direct patient care. Our newPharmTechX Program offers an online, self­paced, and interactivelearning environment that is designed to help practicing pharmacytechnicians meet their career goals and assume more leadershipresponsibilities within their organizations. Led by Jill Morgan, PharmD,BCPS, associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practiceand Science, the PharmTechX Program is a collaboration between theSchool and three local health systems in Maryland ­ the University ofMaryland Medical System, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and MedStarHealth. It includes three practice­based certificate trainingprograms that technicians can choose from based on their individualpractice interests: Leadership and Patient Care, Specialty PharmacyPractice, and Community Pharmacy Practice and Management. Third International Conference on Microneedles: The Schoolof Pharmacy, under the leadership of Audra Stinchcomb,PhD, professor in in the Department of PharmaceuticalSciences (PSC), hosted theThird InternationalConference onMicroneedles, May 19­21.The conference was a livelymix of more than 200academic, industrial, andregulatory delegates, andincluded networkingopportunities during posterand exhibition sessions, as well as social activities. A range ofinvited and keynote speakers from both business and academiapresented technical highlights and reviewed state­of­the­artdevelopments in the field. Topics included: design andtechnology, clinical and pre­clinical results, fabrication andmaterials, coatings and formulation, drug and vaccine delivery,regulatory issues, and more.US/Thai Pharmacy Education Conference: The School ofPharmacy, under the direction of Ed Moreton, PhD,professor inPSC, hosted the US­Thai Consortium for the Development ofPharmacy Education inThailand Conference, May28­30. The three­dayconference welcomed 125attendees from the UnitedStates and Thailand to theSchool to share informationand best practices onpharmacy education. Theconsortium was founded inMay 1994 when nine schools of pharmacy from the UnitedStates and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacysigned a Memorandum of Agreement with eight schools ofpharmacy in Thailand and the Committee for PharmacyManpower Development of the Thailand Ministry of UniversityAffairs. There are now 18 Thai and 16 US schools of pharmacyin the consortium. In July 2008, the MOA was renewed for anadditional fourteen years. The Consortium fosters a formal link,on an institutional basis, that supports the long­termdevelopment plan of the Ministry of University Affairs toenhance the academic, research, and clinical programs of theirschools of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. Ninth Pan American Conference on PharmaceuticalEducation: The School welcomed more than 90 delegates,presenters, and participants from 35 countries across the Americas to the Ninth PanAmerican Conference onPharmaceutical Educationheld June 2­4. Hosted byMagaly Rodriguez deBittner, PharmD, BCPS,CDE, FAPhA, professorand chair of the Departmentof Pharmacy Practice andScience (PPS) at theSchool, the conference aimed to promote cooperation among

pharmacy schools across the Pan American region. Sponsoredby the School of Pharmacy, the Pan American HealthOrganization (PAHO), the American Association of Colleges ofPharmacy (AACP), and the Ministry of Health in Brazil, theconference featured presentations and panel discussions thathighlighted innovative methodologies for pharmacy educationand evaluation.

Three SOP Faculty Members Honored at MPhAAnnual Meeting Three faculty members from the Department ofPharmacy Practice and Science (PPS) were therecipients of prestigious statewide awards from theMaryland Pharmacists Association (MPhA). DeannaTran, PharmD, an assistant professor in PPS,received MPhA's 2014 Distinguished YoungPharmacist Award, which is presented each year toa pharmacist who has graduated within the past 10years and has made a significant contribution to theprofession through service to a local, state, ornational pharmacy organization. Dr. Tran completeda one­year community pharmacy residency at Virginia CommonwealthUniversity and Martin's Pharmacy following her graduation from theSchool of Pharmacy in 2011. Her research and teaching focus oncommunity pharmacy practice, including medication therapymanagement, diabetes, immunizations, travelhealth, point­of­care testing, and over­the­countermedications. She currently serves as a clinicalprograms consultant to Giant Pharmacy. Mary LynnMcPherson, PharmD, BCPS, CPE, professor andvice chair for education in PPS, received MPhA'sSeidman Distinguished Achievement Award, whichrecognizes her important contributions to theassociation, organized pharmacy, and the pharmacyprofession. An international authority in the fields ofpain management and palliative care, Dr.McPherson has maintained a practice in hospice and palliative care, aswell as ambulatory care, throughout her career. She teachesextensively in the School's Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program anddeveloped one of the first palliative care pharmacy residency programsin the United States, for which she currently servesas director. MPhA's Cardinal Health Generation RxChampions Award was awarded to BethanyDiPaula, PharmD, BCPP, associate professor inPPS, in recognition of her outstanding commitmentto raising awareness about the dangers ofprescription drug abuse among the general publicand the pharmacy community. Dr. DiPaula receivedher PharmD from the School of Pharmacy, whereshe also completed a psychiatric pharmacyspecialty residency. She now serves as director ofthat residency program and is a board certified psychiatric pharmacistwith practices in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry andsubstance abuse. Read more here.

Visitors Seven new members have been named to the School's Board ofVisitors. A distinguished group of professional, business, andgovernment leaders who are committed to the mission and goals of theSchool, the Board of Visitors provides advice and counsel to the dean,advocates for the School in pursuit of its aims, and assists the Schoolwith fundraising.
