was because of our sportsmanship. Wewere the only school that was cheeringfor every contestant and every team.Toan was our contestant and heshowed support for everyone as theywere introduced which was great! Our theme gave an 80's/90's neondance vibe. This was mainly chosenbecause it was bright, would stand outand because Toan is a fantastic dancer. It was the best feeling when theyannounced our names as the winners. It really was the only thing that I per-sonally wanted out of optometry'smeeting this year and I think onceeveryone knew how fun and excitingit was, they wanted it too! UMSL willnow be the stars of next year's rulesvideo which is a great honor and willbe a lot of fun!

To have over 50 students in atten-dance was also remarkable. “Months

UMSL Hosts “Eyes on Diversity” ProgramThe UMSL College of Optometrywas an active participant in theEyes on Diversity program held atthe College on four Saturdays inMay and June. It was held in thePre-Clinic area and the main lectureroom. Coordinated by Dr. AngelNovel (‘03), the purpose of thisprogram was to expose minorityhigh school juniors and seniors tothe career field of optometry. Thisis in hopes that these students mayconsider the field of optometry as apossible career choice. There werenine participants including sevenwho were entering their senior yearof high school and two who wereentering their freshman year of col-lege. According to NOSA PresidentVanessa Braimah (‘13): “There wasa different educational opportunityeach week. The first week therewas a lecture on the Anatomy of theeye and the students were able to dis-sect a cow eyeball, which the stu-dents particularly enjoyed. Therewere several lectures given on thehistory of Optometry, and basic clini-cal skillssuch as colorvision, stere-opsis, andvisual acuity.Furthermore, there was aninteractivecomponent,in which thestudents wereable to visitour pre-clini-cal area andlearn severalcomponents of an eye exam, such as how to properly take a visualacuity, color vision testing, stereopsis, and eye drop insertion. In addition, there were two guest lecturers whoemphasized leadership and diversitytraining. Another excellent componentof the program is that the students hadthe opportunity to shadow a local

African American optometrist in theSt. Louis area. The final week, the

students presentedan essay writtenabout what theylearned whileshadowing theoptometrist for theday. I am hon-ored that I wasable to partici-pate in thisinaugural pro-gram that Iknow willhave animpact on the

optometry com-munity for many years to come. Ilook forward to subsequent yearshaving a larger participant baseand a longer program. I think it isexcellent that the students had theopportunity to be immersed in realoptometry topics and education-al opportunities. The students werelearning and experiencing many of the

skills and lectures, including the dis-section procedures that first yearoptometry students are exposed to. Ifyou would like to be more informed, you can "like" our page on Facebook atEyes On Diversity.”
