Letter from the President of PanhellenicDear Women Interested in Greek Life,

Welcome! Thank you for expressing interest in the Panhellenic Community at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. We are so excited to give you a glimpse into the four amazing chapters that we have here on campus. These Panhellenic sororities have spent the last several decades working together to bring our individual chapter values to the forefront of Greek Life. These values include high academic standards, friendship and sisterhood, community service, career development, leadership positions, and many other resumé-building opportunities.

Accepting a bid from a UMKC sorority means being enveloped in a community of support, love, encouragement, and fun. The women you surround yourself with, not only in your chapter but in all of the chapters at our university, will become your best friends and your support system. Your chapter will become your home away from home. College is a formative time for young women, and being a sorority will allow you to grow into a sophisticated and confident leader who is ready to take on life after graduation.

Joining a sorority opened many doors that I otherwise wouldn’t have had access to at UMKC. As a commuter campus, it can sometimes feel like you are just coming to class and leaving with no emotional attachment to the university. But if you become a member of Greek life, there’s something fun and exciting to do every day, whether it’s raising money for your chapter’s philanthropy, embracing the ritual of your sorority at chapter meeting each week, competing against your sisters in intramural sports or spending time with women from other chapters at Panhellenic mixers. I came from an all-girls high school, so I was looking for that same sisterly connection when I began as a freshman at UMKC. By joining a sorority, I found it, and so much more!

Like many things, what you put into a sorority is often what you get out of it. The time commitment can be as large or small as you choose, and you can take on leadership positions or serve the chapter in a variety of ways. Each chapter has its own way of helping members pay their dues and other expenses each month. Any other questions or concerns about Formal Recruitment or sorority life general can be answered by our well-trained Rho Gammas (Recruitment Guides) who are disaffiliated from their chapters for the Formal Recruitment process to help potential new members find their home in sororities at UMKC, as well as myself and the rest of the Collegiate Panhellenic Council. We are always happy to assist anyone who is interested in Greek Life! I look forward to meeting you during Formal Recruitment and hope your experience is as great as ours.

Best of luck!

Letter from the Recruitment Team

Best of luck!

Hayley & Abbey

Dear Potential New Members:

On behalf of the UMKC Panhellenic Community, we would like to say welcome to sorority recruitment and to the UMKC! Congratulations on taking the first step in what we hope will become one of the most positive and life-changing decisions you make during your time at UMKC. Joining Greek life has impacted both of our lives so much and we hope it does that for you all.

Greek students at UMKC exemplify the qualities of being true Roos and are routinely the most involved students on campus. UMKC Greek life celebrates four pillars, leadership, philanthropy, academics, and sisterhood/brotherhood. As a Panhellenic community, we uphold these four pillars of our university’s Greek system, the values of our own national organizations, and the high standards of the National Panhellenic Council. Panhellenic women at UMKC are constantly striving for excellence; we have sisters on the Dean’s List, volunteering abroad, serving in our student government, and so much more. We have no doubt that UMKC Panhellenic women will go on to change the world one day!

Being Panhellenic has taught us valuable lessons you don’t learn inside of a classroom; sisterhood, integrity, perseverance, and unwavering loyalty and responsibility. The decision to join our sororities was one of the best decisions of our lives, and has given us the support and encouragement we need to reach our own personal goals and become better members of the Panhellenic and UMKC communities. When you join a sorority, you make connections and friendships that will last a lifetime.

We ask that you try to keep an open mind and a positive attitude during this weekend. Take it all in and enjoy yourself, and try not to stress out too much! Each and every chapter on campus is exceptional. Think about what is important to YOU, and look for that in your sorority home. Please use this book as a resource for information about Greek Life and our Panhellenic community at UMKC! Please feel free to e-mail us with any questions you may have at [email protected]. Please visit our website and follow us on social media for all of our latest updates!

Greek life is not just four years--it’s for life. Take the next step at making your UMKC experience even more fulfilling, and sign up for recruitment today. We hope to see you at recruitment in the fall and are looking forward to meeting each and every one of you!

panhellenic creedWe, the undergraduate members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for

guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community.

Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities.

We, the fraternity women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life.

The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

Letter from the Coordinator of Fraternity & and Sorority Affairs

As the Coordinator of Fraternity and Sororities Affairs here at UMKC, I want to extend my welcome to you all! Joining a sorority has been impactful for

many women’s college experience, including my own. I hope it can be the same for you. I am a proud member of Delta Delta Delta and have committed myself to the fraternity and sorority experience for the past 9 years. Please know that I am always here as a resource and supporter as you find your home at UMKC. -Kathleen Drake-Prout

Panhellenic is focused on Values Congruence and as a result, are all values-based organizations. Each of our individual chapters and the Panhellenic Council were

founded on four pillars: scholarship, leadership, community service/philanthropy, and sisterhood.

When a woman joins a Panhellenic sorority at UMKC, some of the most prominent leaders on campus are members of Panhellenic, service opportunities are abundantly available, and sisterhood is formed within the chapters and among the community.

UMKC’s Panhellenic Council consists of 4 of the 26 National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) member organizations: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Chi Omega, and Delta Zeta. Each chapter offers something unique to its members yet all of the organizations share similar goals and values. You are sure to find a home away from home!

The University of Missouri - Kansas City Collegiate Panhellenic Council is the governing body of the 4 National Panhellenic Conference sororities at UMKC. The Executive Board is comprised of

women from each of the chapters on campus. The Panhellenic Executive Board are active members of a sorority elected to one of eight executive positions. CPC’s goal is to promote Greek values, maintain positive public relations among the sororities, Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Along with the Rho Gamma’s, members of the Panhellenic Executive Board are disaffiliated throughout the Recruitment process.

Each sorority president represents her individual chapter. She is responsible for maintaining chapter goals and excellence and is elected by her sisters to represent their chapter and what that stands for

at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Chapter presidents demonstrate the four pillars of Greek life: Leadership, Scholarship, Sisterhood, and Service. They are active within their own chapters as well as the surrounding community and serve as role models for women in their organizations.

• Dress in what makes you feel comfortable. Don’t try to wear a new outfit and brand new shoes the day of an event. The more confident you are in your appearance, the more YOUR genuine personality will shine through.

• Not everyone has the “perfect schedule”. Because preferences from both sides (yours and the chapters) are taken into consideration, it is rare that everyone is matched perfectly with their dream schedule. But remember: most chapters don’t get their dream schedule either!

• The chapter women are just as nervous as you are talking to them. Enjoy getting to know new people!• Each day is a new day! The chapter you loved yesterday may not be your favorite today. Even if they didn’t

stand out at the beginning, you should keep an open mind throughout the process. There is reason why you were invited back to their chapter!

• Let your personal values and goals guide your decisions through the week. Although there are some really cute t-shirts out there that is not the reason why you should join a sorority.

• Look for women who inspire you!• Stay true to yourself only you can determine your perfect fit.• Lean on your Rho Gamma from the start! She is there for you to get advice about your life or outfit, support

you in your decision making process, and they are always good for some mints or candy!• Wear comfortable shoes, bring a hair tie, and know that you will sweat a little. Remember everyone else is in

the same boat as well. • Through this whole process, remember that this is YOUR recruitment and YOUR decision---not your mom’s

or sister’s or roommates. The women who are happiest three years down the road from recruitment are the ones who made their own decisions.

• Please do not contact individual chapters with information regarding recruitment. Examples Include: letters, emails, phone calls, and all forms of social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Messaging, etc.)

• Normal contact with UMKC Greek Women (work, volunteering, etc.) can occur, but conversations should be limited to the benefits of participating in recruitment, and should not be specific to pledging any one organization.

• Women going through recruitment should not stay with current UMKC Sorority Women or have individual contact with them during summer orientation sessions. Example: spending the night at a member’s house, eating dinner or attending social activities.

• Women going through recruitment should not participate in any type of gatherings outside of the Formal Recruitment process with current UMKC Sorority Women. Example: parties, trips, etc.

Summer Dos and Dont’s:

Tips from the Recruitment Team&

Each woman joining a sorority should be aware of the dues, fees and other expenses that are involved and should consider these when making financial plans to attend college. Panhellenic sororities are not-for-profit organizations,

meaning they count on dues from members to thrive and function. A sororities finances are handled directly via that sorority and not the University. During Formal Recruitment, a potential member should ask sorority members about financial obligations and payment options, if that is one of your top concerns. Each sorority sets its own fees and housing costs as well as payment schedules. Examples of such items may include: Badge fee, Activity Fee, Initiation Fee, New Member Education Fee, Housing Fee, etc. This first year has a higher level of costs due to one-time expenses and fees. Each chapter will discuss their own specific financial commitments during the rounds on Sisterhood day.

How selection works&

Recruitment is a mutual selection process. After each round of recruitment, you will enter your priority of chapters you would like to attend in the next round. You should make this decision based on your feelings and knowledge of

the chapters you visited and be careful not to base your decision on the opinion of others. In the same manner, chapter members will decide who they would like to invite back to the next round. Prior to each round, you will receive a schedule of chapters you have been matched with for visits.

After attending your last event of preference round you will enter your final preference choices. Each potential new member will list the chapters whose preference events you attended and would be willing to receive an invitation for membership. By submitting your choices for membership after your last preference round, you are agreeing to accept an invitation to membership from any NPC fraternity/sorority that you have listed. Once the acceptance agreement has been submitted, it cannot be altered or changed.

After the agreement is submitted, you are bound by the National Panhellenic Conference one calendar year rule. This rule states that if you receive an invitation to membership from a group that you have listed and then do not accept it, you are not eligible to be pledged to any other NPC member sorority (fraternity) on this campus until Formal Recruitment in Fall 2017.

Most of the time potential members receive their first preference. If the potential new member does not receive an invitation from her first preference, she may receive an invitation from her second preference. Once a potential new member receives an invitation to pledge a chapter, she becomes a new member of that sorority. There will be a pledging ceremony, in which chapters ask their new members to pledge themselves to the ideals of the sorority. Pledging typically occurs at the first chapter meeting or following the week after Bid Day. Pledging ceremonies may be formal or informal, depending on the chapter.

Financial Obligations&

Rho Gamma’s are sorority women from all 4 of our UMKC Panhellenic chapters who have participated in recruitment themselves, both as a potential new member and as an active sorority member.

Your Recruitment Guides (Rho Gammas) are some of the first people you will meet at UMKC. They were chosen to help the Potential New Members because of their leadership qualities within their own chapters and within the UMKC community.

Rho Gammas are there to answer your many questions regarding Recruitment and if they don’t know an answer they will know who to direct you to!

The Rho Gammas are disaffiliated from their chapters in order to represent the entire Panhellenic community. This means that they have no contact with any sorority, including their own, all summer and during Recruitment Week. They can be relied upon to keep all of your questions and problems confidential, and they will remain neutral throughout the Recruitment process. They will be the shoulders to lean on when decisions get tough, and they will be available for anyone to talk to – you don’t need to be in their group to ask them a question!

Making the decision to “Go Greek” may seem a little different but it is a decision you will not regret!

The potential new member is encouraged to list on this card any women’s sorority (fraternity) whose preference (last) event she attended and from which she is willing to accept a bid to membership.

*Adapted from the NPC Manual of Information

Explanation of the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA):

The document on the opposite page is the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA), formerly known as the “Preference Card”. The MRABA is a binding agreement that is effective for one full calendar year. By signing this document, you as a Potential New Member agree that you are willing to accept a bid for membership from any sorority that you rank on the MRABA. Please note that if you receive an invitation to membership (a bid) from any sorority that you ranked on your MRABA, then you are bound to that group for one full calendar year (August 2016-August 2017). Most importantly, if you receive a bid from any sorority that you have listed on you MRABA, and you choose not to accept it, you ARE NOT eligible to participate in Continuous Open Bidding (COB) in Fall 2016 or Spring 2017.

If you receive invitations to Preference, at the conclusion of your last Preference party, you will make your final selections in a computer lab, ranking the chapter(s) you visited on Sunday, August 28th in preferential order. Once you complete your rankings, you will print and sign a copy of the MRABA. Please known that once the MRABA has been turned in to a representative of the UMKC Collegiate Panhellenic Council, it cannot be changed or altered.

-First and foremost, you may choose not to complete the MRABA, thereby withdrawing from recruitment. If you choose this option, you are eligible to accept a bid for membership from any sororities participating in Continuous Open Bidding (COB). A small number of sororities may be able to recruit a limited number of women through the COB process after formal recruitment if their chapter is below Panhellenic Total; however, this is not guaranteed.

-Secondly, you may choose to list any sorority whose preference event you attended and from whom you are willing to accept an invitation to membership (a bid). Please note that you should not rank any sorority on your final selection that you are absolutely not willing to accept a bid for membership. If you match with a sorority that you listed on your MRABA, it is important to note that you are bound to that sorority for one calendar year (August 2016-August 2017) regardless of whether you accept their invitation for membership or not.

-Lastly, you may choose to list only one or two preferences, but you must understand that if you choose to single intentional preference then you are not guaranteed to receive a bid for membership. Only Potential New Members who maximize their options and list ALL of the chapters that they attended during the Preference Round are guaranteed to receive a bid for membership during formal recruitment.

If you do not receive an invitation to membership (a bid) from any of the sororities that you have listed, you are eligible for Continuous Open Bidding (COB).

*Agreement on opposing page is just a sample of the real page you will see on Sunday of Recruitment Weekend. If you have any questions, prior to and during recruitment regarding the MRABA please see Kathleen Drake-Prout or Hayley Byers!

Leadership

Sororities provide a foundation for leadership, training, and networking to prepare members for the demands and responsibilities the working force requires. You will be encouraged by your chapter to become involved in chapter leadership and campus wide organizations.

Within Greek life, leadership opportunities include but are not limited to:-Chapter Executive Boards and Committees-Panhellenic Executive Board and Committees-Recruitment Counselors/Rho Gammas-Fraternity Sorority Council-Greek Week Planning Committee

At UMKC, we are very passionate about the development of our future leaders. Greek women not only serve in Greek leadership roles, but they also are involved in a variety of leadership roles in campus organizations such as Student Government Association, Alpha Phi Omega (Community Service Organization), Mortar Board, and so many more.

Scholarship

Academic achievement is of the highest importance for the Panhellenic women at UMKC. All of our chapters stress the significance of high academic achievement while challenging each of their members to live up to their highest academic potential. Throughout your sorority experience, the chapter encourages you to improve and maintain academic success. Academics are the reason why you came to our university and we could not stress how important your studies are. Numerous Greeks appear on the Dean’s list each semester and belong to honor societies such as Alpha Lambda Delta and Mortar Board. The Collegiate Panhellenic Council awards members of the Greek community with exceptional GPAs.

While recognizing the academic achievement of our members, we are also the first to provide academic support services to those who may need assistance. We sit together in class, hold study hours, host academic seminars and have a variety of tutoring opportunities available on campus.

Philanthropy

Helping people in need and giving back to the community is an integral part of UMKC Panhellenic’s life. At UMKC, each of our sororities invests thousands of hours each year doing community service projects and fundraising money for charities. Each chapter has its own philanthropic cause, which it serves at a local and national level.

The Circle of Sisterhood Foundation is an organization that urges sorority women across the nation to raise money and awareness for girls and women facing poverty and oppression. It allows sorority women to break banners of affiliation, age, and color to come together to give young girls the chance to receive an education. The University of Missouri – Kansas City Panhellenic community proudly supports Circle of Sisterhood and continues to raise awareness not only at UMKC but in the Kansas City area. Visit circleofsisterhood.org for more information and an opportunity to learn about the book Half the Sky by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.

Sisterhood

One of the best parts of being in a sorority is the lifelong friendships you form. Joining a sorority is just the beginning of another new experience in your life and finding a home away from home. Having that sisterhood gives one a sense of belonging while also celebrating what makes you unique.

Whether you need a study buddy, workout partner, shoulder to cry on, or a friend to share your love of movies or even help with homework, you will be able to find that in a sisterhood.

Sororities were founded by like-minded women who wanted to create a support system and build lifelong friendships in addition to pursuing intellectual, social, and moral development.

In an effort to ensure you are comfortable, the Panhellenic Council offers the following suggestions of proper attire for formal membership recruitment. When determining attire, you should understand you will be doing some walking throughout the Union during recruitment and its usually warmer than one would expect! Attire becomes dressier as the rounds continue, but please dress comfortably. Light weight clothing and comfortable shoes are highly recommended!

Week at a GlanceDay 1/2: Philanthropy Rounds

On Philanthropy Day chapters are given the opportunity to tell you about their community service and their philanthropic activities. Each

sorority has their own unique philanthropy and works very hard to support it. This day is more

casual than the following days will be. Please wear your “Sisters” Recruitment shirt!

What Not To Wear:Watches: Out of respect for the chapter members, CPC asks that you leaves you watches at home during recruitment. This is to make sure you aren’t constantly watching time during the rounds. But don’t worry! Our staff, Rho Gamma’s, and Recruitment Chairs are sure to keep you on schedule!

Cell Phones: Please leave your cell phone in the Student Union Theater. Rounds are to be free from distractions such as texting and social media.

Perfume: This one seems a little strange, but you will understand after going to a couple of rounds. With so many women in an enclosed space, a bunch of perfume can be very overwhelming, especially to women with allergies, and easily irritated eyes and noses. Leave that perfume at home, but please don’t hesitate to wear deodorant!

Day 3: Sisterhood Rounds Day 4: Preference Round

Sisterhood Day is the night when you get to see each sorority’s personality as they entertain you

with a unique skit and sisterhood video. This day will be dressier. A cute dress paired with wedges or heels is the perfect outfit combo for Sisterhood day!

Preference day is often referred to as “Pref ” Day. It is the most serious and formal day of Recruitment.

You will learn more about the sisterhood and the history of each sorority. A cocktail dress and

elegant jewelry are great for Preference day.

1. Take notes after leaving each event to help you make decisions later.2. Be interested regardless of whether or not you think you like the sorority. You will be remembered, and you may decide you like the group should you go to another event there.3. Be polite. If you are not interested, you should still be positive and thank your hostess. Remember, there is life beyond recruitment where you will interact with these women again!4. Look at each sorority as a whole; don’t judge it by the few women you met.5. Ask questions—it helps the conversation and is a sign of your interest.6. Smile!7. Be mature in your decision-making, and be realistic about which members you feel most comfortable with. Do not be influenced by others’ opinions.8. Recruitment is a mutual selection process. In the same way you are looking for the sorority that bests fits you, the sorority is looking for new members who would be a good fit for their chapter.9. Get plenty of sleep.10. Do not interpret any remark made at an event as an assurance of an invitation to another event or a bid.11. If you go to the wrong event by mistake or if you have any challenges, find a Rho Gamma immediately. Don’t get upset. You are not the first person to do this, and chapters understand that this happens.12. All sorority members have been through recruitment, and they want you to feel comfortable.13. Discuss your feeling about a sorority or a certain event privately with your recruitment guide.14. Be yourself, and have fun!

It&s All Greek To Me

“In the mid 1800’s in America, the women who founded our sororities stood together for the right to go to college, thus beginning a sorority movement. Now, almost 150 years later and more than 5 million strong, we vow to continue our Founders’ legacy by standing together again to help girls and women go to school around the world.

Circle of Sisterhood is comprised of women, who have in common a college education. We know that access to quality schooling affords a better life for a woman and that of her family. Far too many girls and women around the world, access to quality education is often limited. And education is the answer to many of the global issues related to women - poverty, oppression, misogyny, brutality. Ultimately, more and more educated girls will mean stronger and healthier villages, communities, and entire countries.

One person can make a small difference. But as a community of 5 million sorority women, our collective efforts will be transforming for generations to come.”

-Ginny Carroll, Founder of Circle of Sisterhood

The Collegiate Panhellenic Council adopted the Circle

of Sisterhood as our Panhellenic Philanthropy in

2013!

Q : What is Formal Recruitment?

At UMKC, the Formal recruitment process is set up so that each PNM can get to know the women in each sorority before deciding which organization is the best fit for her!

Q : Is Formal Recruitment the same thing as Informal Recruitment?

No. Formal Recruitment takes place at the beginning of each fall semester, and all CPC chapters participate. Informal Recruitment, on the other hand, is a process that takes place throughout the year. Not all chapters participate in Informal Recruitment, and chapters do not begin Informal Recruitment until after Formal Recruitment is over in the fall. Informal Recruitment can also take place in the spring semester’s as well.

Q : How many chapters do we visit each day?

During Recruitment weekend, you will visit all 4 National Panhellenic chapters on campus.

Frequently Asked QuestionsRecruitment is broken up into 3 different “rounds”. On Thursday or Friday, you will visit each chapter once. On Saturday, you will visit up to 3 chapters and on Sunday, you will visit up to 2 chapters. Philanthropy rounds are on Thursday/Friday which focus on each chapter’s community service work and chapter philanthropies. Saturday’s Sisterhood rounds showcases a sisterhood video and also allows the sorority women to show you a humorous skit. These rounds will help you figure out the personality, values, and goals of each chapter and find which chapter is best with you! Keep in mind that Recruitment is a mutual selection process, so while you are deciding which chapters you feel most comfortable with, the women in each chapter are also trying to figure out which women would fit best into their chapter.

Q : Are there sororities on campus that don’t participate in Fall Formal Recruitment?

Yes, we do have one local sorority, Delta Rho, but they are not a part of the Collegiate Panhellenic Council (CPC) and therefore do not take part in Fall Formal Recruitment. UMKC also has a National Pan-Hellenic Council with three historically African-American sororities. Students who wish to find out more about these councils should contact their respective governing councils for more information.

Q : Is there a grade requirement to join a chapter?

There is no requirement to go through Formal Recruitment set by CPC, but each chapter has its own set of standards for membership and retention. Because CPC and each chapter put a very high value in scholarship, having and keeping good grades is very important to

every Panhellenic sorority woman. The average college GPA for all sorority women at UMKC in the fall semester of 2015 was 3.273, which is higher than all women, all men, and all campus GPA averages. Something to note is that the average high school GPA from women who joined a sorority in the fall of 2015 is higherthan a 3.5.

Q : How much of a time commitment is being in a sorority?

Each sorority has its basic time commitments and mandatory events, such as chapter meetings once a week and New Member Meetings. Some chapters require study hours. Time commitment might depend on how involved you want to get in your chapter. There are many opportunities for leadership roles throughout the Greek Community. Regardless of how involved you decide to become, being in a sorority will require you to attend certain events and will be a time commitment. As an initiated member, the majority of your time will be spent in chapter meetings, studying, attending social activities, participating in philanthropy events and doing community service. Most chapter policies excuse you from events when you have work, class, or another important commitment.

Q : Is it common for women in different chapters to be friends with one another?

UMKC has a strong Greek Community that has many opportunities for members of different chapters to meet and create life-long friendships. Social, leadership, and service events give women in different sororities the chance to socialize with women of other chapters. Although some Greek events may

be competitive, making friends from other sororities only helps in making UMKC’s Greek Community even stronger. By participating in Formal Recruitment, a Potential New Member has the amazing opportunity to meet other members in her Recruitment group and is able to maintain these friendships even if you choose to join different chapters.

Q : What questions should I ask during Recruitment?

-Why that chapter member decided to choose the chapter she did.-What does your chapter mean to you? -How have you benefited from being a member of your chapter?-What kind of scholarship and awards program does your chapter have?-What is your philanthropy and who does it benefit?-How is the sisterhood in your house?-What kind of leadership opportunities does your chapter offer?

Remember, the way to get to know a chapter is by asking questions that matter to you. Talk about whatever comes to mind. Remember that chapters want to get to know you just as well as you want to get to know them and don’t be afraid to talk about yourself!

Q : Is is required to live in your chapter house?

Each chapter has a different policy pertaining to housing. During Recruitment, Potential

New Members are encouraged to ask about the chapter housing specifics.

Q : Am I allowed to go to fraternity houses during Formal Recruitment?

No. Recruitment embodies all aspects of the Greek values and sisterhood is the one that is stressed the most throughout Recruitment. Sisterhood is the reason that any woman participating in Recruitment (Potential New Members, Active Members, CPC Members, and Rho Gammas) agrees that she will not go onto fraternity property, will not communicate with any fraternity men and will avoid alcohol for the duration of Recruitment.

Q : What if I go through the Recruitment process and decide that joining a sorority is not for me?

If a Potential New Member decides during Recruitment that joining a sorority is not right for her, she may withdraw at anytime during the Recruitment process. The Panhellenic Council encourages Potential New Members to participate and recommends discussing withdrawing with the Potential New Member’s Rho Gamma, but the decision to withdraw from Recruitment is determined by the Potential New Member. If the Potential New Member does decide to withdraw, there will be paperwork she must complete.

Q : Do you need a professional photo/head shot when you register for Formal Recruitment?

You are not required to get professional photos taken, but please upload a nice, classy picture of yourself (Senior picture/Profile photo, etc.). Also please do not include anyone else in your photo.

Q : How do I decide which sorority I prefer?

Pick a sorority that reflects your interests and your personality, a place where you think you will be comfortable. It really depends on what you are looking for in a sorority and what each has to offer your needs.

Q : What should I do if I cannot attend a particular event?

If you are unable to attend a particular event, please notify the Recruitment Elect, Abbey. She will notify the chapters that you have other commitments but are still interested and try to work around your schedule.

Letters of Recommendation&A letter of recommendation, also commonly referred to as a “Rec” or “Reference”, is a recruitment information form completed by an alumna of a sorority. The purpose of a letter of recommendation is to introduce a Potential New Member to the alumna’s sorority chapter at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. An alumna may find a copy of her sorority’s recruitment information form in her sorority’s national magazine, or on the national organization’s website. She can also call the inter/national headquarters of her sorority to obtain a copy of the form. Keep in mind, the alumna writing the letter of recommendation does not need to be a graduate of UMKC, she only needs to be an alumna member in good standing of a sorority with a chapter on UMKC’s campus. While it is common to send multiple recommendations from separate alumnae, it is unnecessary to exceed more than two letters. Letters of recommendation for each sorority should be sent directly to the sorority’s local chapter, unless otherwise specified on the recommendation form. For your convenience, the chapter email addresses for each of the sororities at UMKC can be found listed on the next page. Please note that Letters of Recommendation are not required and many women going through the Recruitment process do not obtain these.

*Please note that neither the UMKC Office of Student Involvement or the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs nor the UMKC Panhellenic Association have access to individual sorority recommendation forms and as such cannot obtain them for Potential New Members. Furthermore, while handwritten “letters of support” may have been used in the past, UMKC does not accept or recognize “letters of support”.

Helpful Hints:When asking alumnae for letters of recommendations, it is customary to supply them with a stamped and pre-addressed envelope. You also may be asked to include the following items to assist the alumna with completing

the recommendation form: (1) a copy of your resume, (2) a copy of high school or college transcripts, and (3) a photo of yourself. Usually a senior picture works well!
