Getting there
From Joburg and Pietermaritzburg
From the N3 approaching Durban take the
turn-o to the N2, North Coast. Follow N2
northwards and take the turn-o signposted Mount
Edgecombe/Umhlanga. Turn right at the trac lights.
Go under the Millenium Bridge and take the turn-o
signposted M12/Umhlanga Rocks Drive. Turn let onto
the M12. Go straight through the rst turning circle, and
turn right at the second turning circle. Continue straight until
you reach Umhlanga.
From Durban
Follow the M4 north until you come to the Umhlanga turn-
o. Alternatively take the N3 west rom the city centre
to Spaghetti Junction. Take the N2 north to Umhlanga
signposted North Coast.

Sunshine, Beaches & Ocean
A quiet stroll along the OConnor Promenade, which runs the length of the
Umhlanga coastline
Umhlangas main beach on a sunny weekend
U
mhlanga Rocks is perched on the edge o the Indian
Ocean, and its beaches oer excellent swimming
and surfng within walking distance o the Umhlanga
village centre.
There are close to 300 days o sunshine a year, and the
water is warm enough to swim throughout summer and winter.
Umhlangas beaches are protected by shark nets and well-
trained proessional lieguards are stationed at the swimming
beaches along the Umhlanga coastline. The 2.7km OConnor
Promenade was recently upgraded, and runs rom Durban View
Park to Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. The promenade is a
avourite or walkers and runners, and is dotted with restaurants,
takeaways, ablution acilities and ice cream sellers. The boat
launch site at Grannys Pool allows visitors to get out onto the
water to sh or dolphin/whale watch.
To the north, Umdloti is set against green hills and lush
vegetation. It has some o the best beaches in the area, with a
rock enclosed tidal pool and a wide lagoon. There is excellent
shing o the rocks and sae swimming. Further along the coast
are Westbrook and Tongaat. These beaches are quiet and oer
great swimming and surng, as well as a launching area or
boats.

Bottlenose dolphins can be spotted all year round
Fishing off Umhlanga has its rewards
Snorkelling and DivingThere are a ew good dive spots right o Umhlanga. The T-Barge,
Lighthouse Ree, the Trawler o Fontao and Dolphin Ree are
excellent dive spots, attracting everything rom moray eels to
tropical sh. The best diving conditions are to be ound in the
winter months.
One o the best snorkelling spots in the area is at the
northern end o Umdlotis Beach Road. A line o rocks encloses
an enormous tidal pool, home to large cowries, craysh and a
variety o tropical sh.
Learn all about sharks
The KZN Sharks Board (KZNSB) in Umhlanga has a displayhall with lie-size replicas o sharks, sh and rays, and oers
a 25-minute presentation on the work the KZNSB does and
the importance o sharks in the marine ecosystem. You can
also experience a 20-minute shark dissection, where you can
learn about and smell the internal machinery o the oceans
ercest predator. The KZNSB services shark nets, which provide
protection against shark attacks at 38 localities.
The presentation and shark dissection is oered at 9am and
2pm Tuesdays to Thursdays and at 2pm on Sundays. R25/adult,

Dolphin and whale watchingThe waters o Umhlanga are rich with sea lie, particularly whales
and dolphins. Pods o bottlenose dolphins can be seen breaching
the water just beyond the breakers and surng in the waves
year-round, and rom July to November each year, humpbacked
whales and southern right whales can be seen all along the coast.
Ocean Ventures launches a number o boat trips every day (weather
dependant) rom Grannys Pool, at Umhlangas main beach. Atera short saety brieng, climb aboard their specially-designed Rigid
Infatable Boat (we recommend you wear a swimming costume, as
youre likely to get wet) and get comortable, and hang on or a ast
launch through the sur. The skipper is an expert in seeking out
whales, dolphins, turtles and sea birds, all the while providing
inormative commentary.

Umhlangas rich heritage
Garsons Expeditions oers a comprehensive
daylong tour o the Inanda Heritage Route and
other interesting sites in the Umhlanga area.
Greg Garson has a deep passion or local history,
and while he takes you on the route he will give you an
oral account o the last 400 years o South Aricas history,
providing context or the struggles and achievements o the
local luminaries. By the end o the tour, you will know more
about South Aricas history than most South Aricans.
The rst stop is King Shaka Museum at KwaDukuza (Stanger).
Displays and exhibits thoroughly document the history o the
people o southern Arica, rom iron-age arming communities tothe rise o the Zulu nation and the rule o Shaka, the most amous
Zulu king. You can also visit Shakas gravesite and a monument
to him erected by Solomon kaDinuzulu, the Zulu king rom 1913
to 1933.
Mahatma Gandhi established the Phoenix Settlement in 1904
ater purchasing a arm rom a local sugar cane armer. He lived
here or 21 years, and its where he developed his philosophy
o passive resistance, called Satyagraha. Gandhis modest
preabricated home is now a museum dedicated to his lie and
teachings.
Its a short drive to the Ohlange Institute, a school ounded in
1900 by John L Dube, rst president o the Arican National Congress.
Visitors to the Institute can see where Nelson Mandela cast his vote

in the rst-ever democratic elections in 1994, nd out more about
Dube in the museum dedicated to his lie and legacy, and pay their
respects to this great man at his gravesite and monument.
The nearby Inanda Seminary, established in 1869, was the rst
secondary school ounded exclusively or Arican girls in southern
Arica. The beautiul and highly secure educational environment is a
verdant oasis in the sprawling Inanda Township. The active campus
educates close to our hundred students amongst ten historic
buildings, the oldest being Rev. Daniel Lindleys mission house,
built in 1858. Many o South Aricas most powerul and infuential
women in government, business and the non-prot world received
their education at this school during the height o Apartheid. The
resident school historian is on call to welcome and host visitors.
Temples and Mosques
There are a number o interesting temples and mosques in the
area. Tongaat is home to the Brake Village Hindu Temple (right)and the Vishwaroop Temple. The Juggernath Puri Temple is
a national monument and was built in 1920 by the late Pandit
Sirikishan Maharaj in North Indian ashion. The Sri Siva
Soobramaniar Temple hosts one o the countrys largest Kavadi
Festivals.

Enjoy a ramble through the Hawaan Forest Reserve
Enjoy the beautyof nature
Despite Umhlangas growth boom in the last twenty
years, its still home to some pristine natural
areas. The OConnor Promenade ends where the
Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve Trail begins.
There is a well-marked path which winds through pretty
coastal orest on boardwalks that cross the Ohlange River
on its way to the lagoon, buttressed by dunes. Benches and
picnic spots are dotted throughout, and you can ollow the
trail to reach the beach and the lagoon, and the remains o
a Stone Age seashell midden can also be ound to the north
o the lagoon.
The adjacent Hawaan Forest is inland o Umhlanga Lagoon
Nature Reserve. This indigenous woodland has remained in itsnatural state or centuries, and is characterised by important
species o trees with tropical attributes, and many small animals.
Entry is restricted so phone ahead to book a guided walk.
Hazelmere Dam and Resort, a ew kilometres inland rom
Verulam, is a avourite watersport destination. There are also
picnic spots and game such as zebra and wildebeest can be seen.
Dudley Pringle Dam, north o Umdloti is another excellent dam
and has prolic birdlie.

Wonderful birding spectacleIn mid-October every year, millions o Barn Swallows arrive in
KwaZulu-Natal rom Europe and winter here beore fying back
in mid-April. Every evening just beore sunset, the swallows fyin rom all directions and gather together into a giant, swirling
fock over the Lake Victoria Wetlands at Mount Moreland near
Umdloti. As the sun sets, the entire fock drops almost as one into
the reed bed to roost or the night.
There is an elevated viewing site over the reed beds which is
accessible to visitors every day try get there an hour or so beore
sunset. To complete the experience, bring a chair, snacks and
drinks and settle in with some binoculars.
Entrance is ree, though a R10 donation
per car is requested. This goes towards theongoing protection o the birds and upkeep o
the viewing site. To get to the viewing site,
take the Umdloti/Verulam exit rom the N2 nor th
and turn let towards Verulam. Ater about 1km, turn right
onto a dirt road and ollow the signs or about 4km to Mount

Non stop Adventure
Horse trails through the Umdloti
hills provide spectacular views
One o the best ways to enjoy the quiet scenery o
the north coast is by horseback. Umdloti Beach
Stables oer riding lessons, outrides and top quality
stabling acilities. Beginners and advanced riders
are welcome, and owner Patrice Hardy has a holistic approach to
horse-riding lessons, helping students understand and connect
with their horses. Hell lead you around the paddock, giving
instructions on posture and technique. Once youve gathered the
basic skills, you can go on an outride through the sugar cane
elds and scattered indigenous bush overlooking Umdloti. For
advanced riders theres the option o going down to the Umdloti
River or to the nature reserve at Umhlanga Lagoon.
Sea kayaking is a rapidly growing sport, and anglers oten sh
o paddle skis where they catch dorado and barracuda. The best
shore angling spots are o the rocks at Umdloti and La Mercy.
I you like exploring trails at speed, mountain biking, dirt bikingand quad biking are all oered, rom tours to day excursions
to outrides. I you ancy a fip through the air, microlighting,
helicopter fights and skydiving are all oered in the area.
trendy Mount Edgecombe
Mount Edgecombe is an upmarket suburb tucked away in the
undulating hills just inland o Umhlanga. Visit Flanders Mall or
exciting restaurants, shops and an art gallery. This vibrant little
town oers two championship gol courses designed to USPGA
specications. Both courses are challenging but air, and provide
a very agreeable round o gol.

Action at the Gateway

The Umhlanga area has some powerul waves, and the best
sur spots are at Umhlanga main beach, Umdloti and Westbrook.
The waves at Umdloti and Umhlanga are classic beach breaks
which work on any size swell rom two to six oot. Westbrook
is a ckle right hander that breaks along a shel o rocks. All
these spots work on light oshore winds, and conditions are
best in winter (between April and August), especially in the early
morning when the land breeze blows. There are loads o sur
shops in the area where you can buy all the gear and nd out
about lessons or beginners. When the surs not great, the Wave
House at Gateway has standing waves suitable or newbies and
advanced surers.

rom pavement sellers and local crats to boutique
shopping and malls where everything is on oer,
Umhlanga is a shopping Mecca. Gateway Theatre
o Shopping is the biggest mall in the southern
hemisphere, and over two million people visit it every month,
thanks to a wide range o shops, restaurants or every taste
and un activities, such as a climbing rock, skatepark, unair
and cinemas. La Lucia Mall is a lovely suburban mall with a
relaxed atmosphere and big brand stores.
An array o local arts and crats are available rom shops,
markets and pavement sellers in the area. Zulu craters are
especially adept in beadwork, weaving, clay pots and wooden
animal carvings. Many local crats recycle used materials, such as
plastic bags, oil tins and beer cans, turning waste into art.
