CALL FOR CHAIRPERSONS, VICE-PRESIDENT AND TRAINER

Page 2: Umeå 2014 - Call for Chairs and Trainers

Growth through culture? Umeå Youth Forum will be revolving around the concept of culture as a driving force in develop-ment. Culture spans over everything from scenery and cuisine to art and democracy, promotes entrepreneurship, employment and competitiveness. The topics proposed to participants thus aim to explore the wide ranging aspects of culture.

” Big enough to be taken seriously, small enough to make it happen!”

Striving for progress, citizens need to become active participants in initiating changes and impro-vements, rather than being passive bystanders. In the mindset of educating youth to take initiative, delegates in Umeå will be discussing current European affairs to propose actions they themselves can take. Resolutions will thus call for ideas and actions from young people, rather than merely encourage them to conceptualize solutions and then await for governments or EU institutions to take action.

Why?- Organisational excellence,- Midnight sun,- High academic level,- Train your leadership and language abilities, - Develop your intercultural skills,- Explore how culture determines growth,- Enjoy Globovillage, a Night of Culture and Culture Workshops,- Lots of possibilities to get creative in an exci-ting atmosphere- Meet decision-makers and creators from dif-ferent backgrounds,- A session embedded in the European Capital of Culture 2014- Experience and shape a completely unique session,- Travel reimbursement of 100 euros (inter-nationals) or 600 SEK (Swedish).

Dear potential candidate,

I am happy you’re interested in Umeå Youth Forum and hope reading a bit about our plans will convince you to apply. Rather than merely going with the traditional ways, Umeå will offer us a unique chance to ques-tion the basic elements of our approaches to events, keeping what makes sense and innovating where needed. There is great creative freedom offered and much excitement for your ideas. In a mind set of co-creation, chairpersons will be involved in developing not only the topics of the session, but also programme elements and general concepts to be applied throughout the session.

Another interesting twist to the traditional role of a chairperson regards the topics. In the mind-set of ‘walk the talk’, delegates in Umeå will be discussing current European affairs in order to propose actions they themselves can and will take. Resolutions will thus call for ideas and actions from young people, rather than merely encourage them to conceptualize solutions and then wait for governments or EU institutions to take action. Chairs will thus also be involved in developing a follow-up plan, to keep track of the implementation of the resolutions, alongside the organisers.

The board will put emphasis on fostering an atmosphere productive for creativity, innovation, self-development and teamwork among the chairs team. Chairs will be encouraged to learn from and support each other, offering feedback to one another and developing new ideas together.

To support and enhance the learning experience of the chairs, we are also eager to have an experienced trainer on our side. He/she will be asked to be present at the forum at least for the pre-session training course days and the first day of the session. The exact length of the trainer’s stay will be decided upon depending on his/her availabilities and objectives for the continuous training throughout the session.

If you have questions about the approach to the session and the chairs’ team, do get in touch with me.

Eager to learn more about you and get to work with you,

Maria Manolescu President of the session

About UmeåUmeå is roughly 600 km north of Stockholm and sits on an inlet of the Gulf of Bothnia that separates Sweden and Finland. Travelling this far north in the summer months you are likely to see the midnight sun and Sweden’s north is bathed in almost constant daylight at this time of year.

As well as being the European Capital of Culture in 2014, Umeå can also claim to be the northernmost capital of culture, located as it is in northern Sweden, a place of extreme natural beauty and rugged wilderness (and culture, of course).

Night of cultureAmong the highlights of the event, a Night of Culture is planned, a night where all of Umeå is invited to join us in celebrating through dan-ce, song, rap, beatbox or whichever artistic expression one preferes. This event is to be co-organised with one of Umeå’s most promi-nent Culture Organisations for Youth: Hamn-magasinet.

GlobovillageThe various culinary traditions of the globe will be explored during GloboVillage - spending dinner learning about the culinary customs of the cultures of the world, through walking from table to table talking to and tasting the food the delegates representing different cul-tures have brought with them.

Culture workshopsAn entire afternoon will be devoted to Culture Workshops, during which the delegates will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively; the results of this afternoon will be put on display in the Municipal Library after the session, but also available for guests to admire during the GA the last day. These forum elements not only tie back to the overall theme of the session and it’s essen-tial element of co-creation, but also add further dimensions to the notion of learning about culture, and the different aspects thereof, by hands on experience.
