Considerations for Apple Mac Configurations
• Suggested premium configurations were recommended by the Committee to encourage employees to select from a defined set of models – Sustain careful balance between standards/support and selection
• Considerations… Quantity of Lenovo vs. Apple is 80% / 20%, but Mac population is growing and
could present a greater support impact as Mac population grow Added complexity for IT: vetting of selected custom configurations, ordering,
asset management, hardware/software support Suggested premium configurations allow for a ‘menu’ listing and provide ease
of ordering via which departments have asked for Allows IT to deploy systems out of spares stock for fast turnaround and
flexibility for re-deployment of machines Sets a precedent for providing increased choice for Macs (vs. Lenovos)
• When needed, IT will work with departments on other configurations than the suggested models. Pricing & terms from Apple do not constrain UML in terms of models or configurations.
7
• Most public general purpose student labs are funded through the University’s student technology fee
• Student labs are generally based on business standard configurations except where there are specific needs
• If a specialized model is selected, the cost difference between the business model and specialized model would be funded by the department or Dean

Challenges: • There is a narrow window in June/July when models are refreshed
and the new budget year begins • Communication and approvals process re: vetting requests for
specialized lab configurations.
Recommendation: • Develop a more formalized process for vetting requests for custom
models and configurations for labs. • Develop timeline with input from the Committee so that departments
needing specialized lab machines will have their configurations reviewed and approved in time to order for summer delivery and fall semester start.
Student Labs and Specialized Lab Configurations
10
• There may be faculty in Engineering, Music, Computer Science or other departments who want the same primary computer as in their lab configuration.
• Additional cost (delta) for these systems above business model: Engineering (Lenovo E31): $375 Music (Specialized Apple iMac): $979 Computer Science (Lenovo M92z): $118
Use of Specialized Lab Configurations As Primary Faculty Computers
11
Challenges: • Tracking of a computers for departing Faculty/Staff is
currently problematic • Limited procedures for notification and tracking • UML could be at risk for exposure of sensitive data • Without connecting assets to users, services are impacted
Recommendation: • Develop working group to focus on…
– Process to collect primary device computers when Faculty/Staff leave UML
– Appropriate tagging, inventory, etc – Process to reallocate
