9. Read the poem and answer the questions.

The visions don’t seem to leave my head Especially when I lay on my pillow in bed Onscreen ghosts visit in the still of night

I wake up sweating, and in a terrible fright

Yes, I know, gaming with vampires and ghouls Is actually made for… errrrr… silly fools! Who have nothing better to do all day

Than to waste and while their time away

The elders around me seem to know it all And I know pride always comes before a fall

I sometimes wish they wouldn’t annoy me so And have the answer to every question I know

I don’t play that much—I’m inclined to think Though afterwards I can’t seem to sleep a wink

No! Sigh! … The elders are probably right Playing spooky video games is simply not all right!

A. Why do you think the poet can’t sleep peacefully at night?

B. How do you feel when you know you’re doing something that isn’t good for you? Give a reason for your answer.

10. Read the historical fiction story and answer the questions.

They may kill me, but they cannot kill my ideas; they can crush my body, but they will not be able to crush my spirit.” –Bhagat Singh

I played with him when we were young. As a child, my friend Bhagat Singh dreamt of “growing guns in the fields” to fight the British. When we were 16, we had long discussions about why it was proving so difficult for Indians to drive a handful of British people away from Indian soil. After all, they didn’t belong here.

We grew older and our paths went in different directions. I was sent to England to study medicine, and Bhagat Singh set off down the revolutionary road that would carve a place for him in the history of the Indian freedom movement. We lost contact, but when I returned to Lahore on that fateful day of 23 March 1931, I wept like the entire nation did. He had been hanged along with his fellow revolutionaries Sukhdev and Rajguru. They had refused to plead for mercy for their offence of throwing bombs in the Central Assembly Hall in protest against the unjust Trades Dispute Bill. The bombs killed no one, but the resounding noise was enough to wake up a sleeping nation used to being dominated.

When I spoke to my father about the way the tide was turning in India, he said, “India is going through troubled times. It is best if you don’t talk about such things.” I knew that my father held a respectable position working for the British. I kept silent. My calling was to serve the sick and the suffering—I did just that. But, I kept the memories of my brave friend, a true son of the soil, always in my heart.
