DESCRIPTION

Medical Options for Kidney Stone Removal
If interventional removal of renal calculi is needed there are several treatment options available.Treatment options include Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), the Retrograde Intrare-nal Surgery (RIRS) and the Percutaneous Stone Treatment (PCNL). When choosing an appropriate treatment, a number of circumstances come into play including the number, size, location and composition of the stone(s).
UMP - The New Technique Developed by Dr. Janak Desai
„UMP will continue to play an established, if not total, role in endoscopic stone treatment in the future.“ – Dr. Janak D. Desai
UMP is an operation technique recently developed by Dr. Janak Desai. When conventional therapies reach their limits, UMP expands the treatment range for percutaneous removal of kidney stones.
By using an even smaller nephroscope, the UMP technique can remove inaccessible stones, loca-ted in the complex system of the renal calices.
The Ultra-Mini Nephroscope will be inserted through a minor incision in the skin. A laser or pneumatic lithrotripter can be used to pulverize the kidney stone and remove the stone material - a technique that is very gentle for the patient and suitable for use in pediatrics, due to its extremely small diameter.
• The use of the UMP technique is less expensi-ve than RIRS therapy.
The product range
The Ultra-Mini Nephroscope, available with an outer diameter of 3 Fr., completes the product range of percutaneous nephroscopes from LUT and expands the indications for percutaneous stone therapy.
Suitable sheaths, instruments, sterilization and storage trays are available.
Why Do We Need UMP?
Kidney stone treatments focus on both being effective and being patient-friendly. The UMP technique fulfi lls these requirements.
• The majority of kidney stones are smaller than 1.8 cm in diameter and can be removed by using an Ultra-Mini Nephroscope.
• Due to the small diameter, blood vessel trau-ma is minimal and makes the application in the complex system of the renal calices easier.
• Compared to other methods, preoperative stenting or extra dilation of the tissue is not required. The intervention is made percutane-ously.
• UMP can be used as an outpatient procedure.
ü High Stone-Free Rate
Low pressure suction for a high stone-free rate.
An integrated irrigation sheath with high fl ow guarantees high stone-free rate.
ü Gentle & Atraumatic Intervention
Minimal trauma of the diaphragm (upper calyx-puncture).
Easy puncture, even if intercostal space is limited.
No need of catherization.
Minimal dilation of the tissue.
ü Ultra-Mini Size
Small puncture and minimal blood loss.
Minimal damage of the blood vessels.
Tear of narrow infundibulum can be avoided.
Minimal parenchymal damage.
ü Less Expensive
Substantially cheaper than other stone removal methods.
ü Innovative Access Sheath Design
Specially designed access sheath with water jet channel for creating turbulence of fragments and high-pressure.
ü State-of-the-Art
Operation-technique with laser as per current trends.
Lightweight construction.
ü Exceptional Image Quality
Excellent image quality and an outstanding color reproduction.
ü Patient-Friendly
Minor incision may lead to a very short stay in hospital.
No need of pre- or postoperative stenting.
„Outpatient procedure.“
ü Faster
Lower operating time duration than RIRS.
