FY15 Highlights
Since ULI Charlotte was established in 1999, ULI has been impacting local land use in so many ways. From Advisory Panels (with global participants) to local conversations, ULI has a reputable name in the Charlotte region. As chair of ULI Charlotte, I am able to experience the full impact our organization has on our community, and hope this Annual Report will give you a glimpse inside the programs, projects and people that have made a difference in land use.
As you review this report, you will find leaders that embrace the ULI mission and think creatively to consider solutions to land use challenges. Reflecting on our fiscal year, I wanted to share with you my top 10 highlights for FY15 in our region (even though I know David Letterman recently retired):
10. 20% growth in ULI membership, which has seen substantial increase in Young Leaders (under 35) and women, enhancing our diversity and cultivating future leaders.
9. More than 300 attendees at our eight CoffeeTalks in the past year – a Members’ Only forum for discussion and sharing.
8. National Speakers such as Ron Terwilliger, talking about critical topics such as the Housing Crisis in America. Mr. Terwilliger addressed real estate executives and then held a public forum co-hosted with the City of Charlotte. ULI is part of the conversation on affordable and workforce housing.
7. Convened ULI members with the City of Charlotte, for the USDOT/HUD LadderSTEP program discussing future development along Beatties Ford Road and the Gold Lynx streetcar corridor.
6. Record-breaking attendance at the Carolinas’ Meeting in Charleston, SC. This regional meeting is one of the largest in the US and attracted more than 500 people from across our region.
5. Provided support for the publishing of the CONNECT Our Future growth framework for the Charlotte region.
4. Ongoing transformation of Charlotte corridors, based on ULI input. Over the years, ULI experts have provided input on critical corridors such as West Trade/Beatties Ford, Applied Innovation Corridor, Exit 27 on I-77 in Cornelius, and Independence Boulevard. It takes years to see some of our hard work to blossom, and it is now bearing fruit. ULI members are sharing their expertise for a better community.
3. Partner support of ULI Charlotte tops $220,000 for the organization. A big thanks to our sponsors, as your contributions help us fund our initiatives. You make it all possible.
2. 34+ programs, ranging from Affordable Housing to future projects in Uptown Charlotte. ULI is facilitating conversations around what is and what can happen in land use.
1. More than 73 people that have served as a volunteer on a committee or speaker over the past year. Our members and volunteers are involved and making a difference.
This is just the top 10. Your ULI Charlotte leadership has even more planned for the next year, so if you aren’t already involved, going to the events, or being a part of the conversation, I invite you to be a part of ULI Charlotte and the mission. I look forward to the next year and leading ULI Charlotte to new heights.
Regards,
Ron Kimble

METRICSFY15 ImpactULI’s mission touches a large array of issues, topics and factors that infl uence the health and vitality of our community. Members help our community in a variety of ways to make the region a better place to live. In FY15, ULI Charlotte touched our community in a number of ways:
• Impact on Economic DevelopmentWith the Mayor’s office for the City of Charlotte, ULI participated in the USDOT/HUD LadderSTEP program. Discussion was centered around the Gold Line and connecting economically diverse neighborhoods by providing efficient transit options and increasing the mobility of residents. The goal is to stimulate development surrounding the expanded Gold Line.
• Impact on InfrastructureIn June, a panel of ULI members participated in a Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) for the Lake Norman Economic Development Corporation around a proposed Exit 27 off of I-77. This panel of six members met with stakeholders, studied the options and presented a unique recommendation that could offer greater and better land use of the largest parcels of land available in the Town of Cornelius. View the final report at http://goo.gl/7nbUru.
• Impact on PlanningAs part of the CONNECT Our Future consortium, ULI Charlotte support helped publish the growth framework, which was launched with the ULI Reality Check in 2012. Check out the publication at http://goo.gl/ssjxNP.
• Impact on the Real Estate ProfessionWomen’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) is stronger than ever before - growth in ULI’s women membership provides evidence. Diversity in our conversations and programs with more women, people of color and younger professionals enhances the conversation, similar to the way our community is evolving. Check out the initiatives by WLI (http://goo.gl/5gNPBC) and the Young Leaders Group (http://goo.gl/kA5Zch), though out the upcoming year.
