A carved stone double-height arched doorway creates a dramatic entrance to the building, which was Grade II listed in 1988. Flexible floorplates spanning six floors provide 89,449 sq ft (8,310 sq m) of Grade A office space, and 31,270 sq ft (2,905 sq m) of retail and leisure space across the ground and two lower ground floors.

The welcoming reception area blends original Art Deco features and detailing with modern fixtures and finishes. The elegant timber and anodized brass of the reception desk contrasts with the robust graphite floor tiles.

Hanover is the earliest surviving commercial warehouse built by the Co-operative Wholesale Society’s (CWS) in-house architecture department.

It is forged from two buildings: E Block was built as a drapery warehouse and completed in 1904; and Hanover was added in 1909 to create offices and additional warehouse space. The red brick building with stone carved details is an outstanding example of Edwardian Baroque, and was built using the most advanced construction techniques of its time.

The overall construction cost was £50,000 which is equivalent to £5.5 million today. A series of cartouches can be seen all around the building’s façade, detailing some of the many locations CWS traded with at the time of construction.

(01) Environmental detailing Taking inspiration from the rich architectural legacy of the area, a series of motifs are featured in the new public realm, wayfinding, streetscape and lighting designs.

(02) One Angel Square Home to The Co-op, this award-winning scheme is one of the highest scoring BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ buildings to date and has been designed on the principle of pragmatic innovation – a unique combination of design features and innovations.

(03) The Pilcrow Pub Uniquely, this is a pub built by the local people, for the local people. A 500-strong team of volunteers made everything from stools to beer pump handles to the pub snacks.

(04) Food market in Sadler’s Yard Sadler’s Yard is Manchester’s newest public square. The space was named in a city-wide competition after James Sadler, the first Englishman to fly – James Sadler famously flew his balloon from the NOMA site in 1785.

(05) PLANT PLANT is an open design studio, gallery and meeting space in Redfern, Sadler’s Yard. It continues the story started with The Pilcrow Pub, offering members of the public the opportunity to influence how NOMA evolves by collaborating and getting hands-on with design and build projects.
