Monthly Challenge for October by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori:

After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." (Gospel for Jan. 13, Lk. 3:21-22)

Think about it. Do you really see yourself as a beloved son in whom your Heavenly Father is well pleased? To be honest, most men, including this archbishop, go through seasons when we don’t seem to sense that our father is well-pleased. Maybe we see ourselves as self-made men who don’t owe our father anything. Maybe we did not experience love from our dad, and the very idea of being beloved is ludicrous. Maybe instead of Jesus’ actual words, we hear, “This is my wayward son, in whom I am much disappointed.” Yet we know that we are baptized into Christ and share in his identity as the beloved son. Being beloved sons is the bedrock of our identity. The plain fact is that your heavenly Father is well-pleased with you.

This month I challenge you to hear the Heavenly Father saying these words— “you are my beloved son”—personally to you and reflect on your identity in him. I recommend that you do so, if possible, in Adoration. Secondly, I challenge you to spend time with someone who loves you unconditionally.  Ask them why? Their answer should give you a small glimpse of God’s unconditional love for you.

Field Agent Article - Happy New Year! It’s that well known time of year when we make resolutions. Have you made any yet? Maybe the realistic question is, “Have you already broken some of them?” Here are 10 popular New Year’s resolutions along with some of my own:

1. Get in shape; for some of us this means to lose some weight, exercise more and staying fit; to stop smoking or eat healthier foods.

2. Stop procrastinating; I don’t know about you, but I’m going to put this off for yet another year!

3. Improve my prayer life; there’s an app for that! I’ve been using the Laudate app. The Laudate app claims it is the most downloaded Catholic app. It has an immense library of prayers, devotions, daily readings, podcasts and Vatican documents.

4. Improve on a skill or develop a new hobby; maybe you want to lower your golf handicap or learn to bowl.

5. Be more thankful; God has blessed me in so many ways and sometimes I forget to thank Him for all those things…usually because I’m too busy asking for something else.

6. Spend more time with the people that matter most; sometimes I get so busy working, keeping the house up or going to some meeting, I forget the ones I do these things for. I’ve got to set aside more time to just be with them.

7. Reduce stress; in this sometimes hectic and seemingly crazy world, it’s easy to get swallowed up in the latest tragedy and worry all the time. Cutting out those sources of stress or learning how to deal with them more effectively means a more settled life.

8. Read more; with so much on the internet, TV and radio it’s easy for me to get lost in those. Reading for pleasure has become something of a lost art. Think about the last book you read.

9. Spend wisely; it’s so easy to spend money on things we really don’t need, buy on a whim or because we’re keeping up with the Jones.

10.Review your financial health; whatever your current situation, it’s always a good idea to take stock on a yearly basis.

Now this last resolution I can definitely help you keep: Resolve to meet with me this year to update your Family Service Record and see where you stand. Your financial health is critical to your family’s future security. As your field agent I have so much more responsibility than a simple financial advisor or stock broker. We’ll take a look at your dreams, goals and aspirations and make sure you’re on track to make them become a reality. Give me a call at 608-795-4287 or drop me an email at [email protected] Dennis O’Connell, K of C Field Agent, Vivat Jesus!
