MORNING CLASSES (Choose in online registration form) Novice (four day class) with Maureen Andary – first time playing uke!

Beginner (four day class) with Sam Marchuk – you know a few chords, but need to build

basic skills.

Intermediate (choose one class for 2 days and switch to another class for 2 days)

The Big Fat Eclectic Songbook with Cathy Fink – sing and play a big repertoire in various styles. While we’re at it, we’ll learn a few new chords and right hand techniques.

Ukulele Bootcamp 101 with Craig Chee - Craig's most popular workshop! Craig's ever adapting Boot Camp will dive into a ton of exercises that will strengthen and quicken your fingers, as well as focus on your tone. He will show you how these exercises are applied to intermediate and even advanced techniques to take you to the next level. You'll have lots to chew on with all of the variations. High G tuning recommended Life After the 3rd Fret with Sarah Maisel - you know your basic chords and have been playing them for years. Now it is time to strengthen your 'ukulele knowledge and exercise those fingers with some tricks of the trade. This class will go over Substitution Chords, runs, walk downs, and other techniques to add interest to your songs. With your new chord knowledge you'll be able to add to your own solo or group arrangements. Must be able to play basic chords and barre chords

Advanced (four day class; requires an audition video) with Ben Chong – Skills include right

and left hand techniques, efficient chordal movement, chord turn-arounds, 4th string melody, chord melody, chord substitution, playing a scale in chords, basic music theory and its importance, and accompanying a soloist.

AFTERNOON CLASSES (no sign-up needed)

Note that if a class does not have a description, the title is self-explanatory.

Warming Up Your Voice Are you singing without warming up? Let’s change that! Warming up can really bring your A Game. Maureen shares her secret vocal warmups which keep her loose before a show. We will warm up for 30 minutes, then have a chance to play and sing for one another post warmup. Keep It Poppin’ Pop Strums Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, all the songs the kids are singing! Learn a whole host of recent pop songs from 2013 to the present day - and their right-hand counterpoints. How do you mimic an electronic keyboard or heavy house beat on the ukulele? This class will give you some interesting right hand techniques.

Beginner Note Reading Part 1: Yes Uke Can! Are you convinced you "can't" read music? Well the ukulele is here to show you how! Using simple, tried, and tested techniques, Maureen will teach you how to read the notes of an entire C scale on the ukulele in one 60-minute class. Beginner Note Reading Part 2 (Part 1 Required) Using the C scale learned in the previous class, we'll learn about quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes. By the end we'll be plucking a classic melody!

Christmas in August Maureen loves arranging Holiday Chord melodies on the ukulele. She has five pieces to share including O Christmas Tree, Joy to the World, and The Hanukkah Song! This is an easy class with simple chord chart and tab notation arrangements. But best for folks who comfortably know F, G, C, Am, Em, and D. Could be useful for someone unfamiliar with tablature.

Ukulele Chord Theory for Nerds This is a class to explain what, exactly, chords are and how they work. We'll discuss notes on the ukulele, Intervals, harmonies, harmonic scales, and keys. And we will play our ukuleles to demonstrate and practice these lessons. For ALL LEVELS but for someone who does not already have an understanding of music theory. If you've taken a music theory class before this may be old hat for you.

Cover It! In this class we will listen carefully and closely to several songs and discuss how they could be arranged on ukulele. We will discuss rhythm, dynamics, percussion, instrumentation, and feel - and we'll translate that into some right-hand techniques. Bring songs that can be played on YouTube, Apple Music, or some other way. Craig’s Ridiculously Non-Intimidating Intro to Music Theory on the Ukulele Craig will give you that jump start in learning about basic music theory and how it's applied to the 'ukulele. By the end of the class you'll know why chords are named the way they are and how to anticipate chord changes. Utilizing this knowledge, you'll be able to even play chord shapes all over the neck! Songwriters’ Circle Just what it sounds like. A circle of folks who want to share their original songs and listen to songs by others in a relaxing and supportive environment. Uke Duets What's better than one ukulele on a song or arrangement? Two ukuleles! Learn a few arrangements for two ukes – then we'll pair up and make duets. Anything Jam Bring your uke, or guitar, or bass, or trombone or kazoo or ___________? And bring songs to share for all.

Drumming Sam will bring a variety of hand drums and lead a drum circle, teaching different rhythms and techniques. This can be a great exercise in community, training in timing and in listening skills. Play well with others! No drumming experience needed. Doo Wop Til You Drop This class focuses on popular progressions, including Doo-Wop, Blues, Pop, and even some Jazz. It's a great class for gaining a lot of songs into your repertoire without needing sheet music! We will also discuss transposing, and show you it's easier than you think. Play By Ear, Paper Free How do I know what chord to play? Where are the notes to this song? You CAN do it. You were BORN with ear training, and Cathy can show you how to make it work for you! Chord Drills Four songs that use four chords will be practiced in four keys. By the time we're done, you'll be ace on 16 chords and changes!

Group Play You've been playing 'ukulele for a while now, you go to your uke jam every week or so and all of you play the same song every week. It's time to spice up those songs and get your group sounding better than ever. This class is perfect for those who are looking to enhance their chord vocabulary and learn how to interact and play with others in a group.

Intro to Soloing Ever wonder how the pros do it? Craig will show you the tricks to starting your solos. Whether it's playing solo, or jamming with others, he will get you feeling confident about your skills. Utilizing drills and exercises that are fun and easy to practice, you'll have a blast in this class. Jazz Blues Already know your 12 bar blues and want to kick them up a notch? Get your fingers (and mind) ready for a work out. We will go over a variety of "Jazz Blues" progressions and why they are used. We will be working in the key of F. Who Needs a Chord Book? We have all gotten stupid at some point because there was a chord in a song that we did not know, and we had no way of figuring it out. With this class, we will discuss how chords are made and how to create them on the 'ukulele- all without using a chord book. It's a fun way to learn your fret board and discover more about the joy of music and chords. Beginning Chord Melody You can play melodies and you can play chords, but can you do them at the same time? YES - and Sarah will show you how easy it can be. This class is perfect for those who have been intimidated by Chord Melody and have always wanted to try it.

Class with Ben Part 1 We’ll work on chords and their inversions, the reading of Tablature, and reading the treble clef.

Class with Ben Part 2 (Part 1 Required) Continued work on chords and their inversions, reading of Tablature, reading the treble clef.

The Percussive Side of the Ukulele Craig loves showcasing how percussive the ukulele can be. He'll take you through muting, scratching, glope, and everything in between to bring a whole new element to your playing. A fun and addictive workshop to create more sound and texture with your ukulele. Rockin’ the Uke Learn the classic showpiece by Roy Smeck, the "Wizard of the Strings". Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7YhWWJA_7M (starts around 47 seconds) Master Classes #1 and #2 Students play a song, then Ben will show them how they can improve on it.

Song Arranging This class will be focused on arranging for Jazz Standards- specifically for comping. We will cover altered chord voicing, melodic movement, intros, and outs. Be prepared to do several chord shapes you are not used to using and moving quickly through a chart. We will also discuss Jazz Notation. To get the most out of this class, please refresh yourself on your basic minor7, MAJOR7, and Dominant 7 & 9 chords.
