Anyone in search of the artist´s beginnings has to visit Brabant in the Netherlands: it´s Van Gogh´s birthplace and where his cultural roots lie. This is where the artist lived and worked most of his life. His time here shaped him both as a person and painter. Vincent never stopped longing for his homeland Brabant where his love of nature and the farming lifestyle were born. Today, many places in Brabant are reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh. They tell us about his childhood and adolescence, about his dreams, passion and the things he experienced.

Young Vincent van Gogh spent two formative years (1878-1880) in the former coal-mining region of Borinage close to Mons. Borinage is an industrial landscape around the city of Mons and was one of Europe´s most important coal-mining regions in the 18th century. During his nearly two-year stay, Vincent van Gogh ended his career as a minister to pursue life as an artist. He quickly developed a penchant for motifs taken from the everyday life of farmers and labourers; he dedicated his last year in the region almost entirely to drawing.

ParisMusée d´Orsay | Montmartre

From 1886 to 1888, Vincent van Gogh lived together with his brother Theo in Paris, which gave him the chance to study impressionist paintings. It was there that he banished the dark phase inspired by the Dutch school from his paintings once and for all. Unlike his initial ascetic stay in Montmartre, he became acquainted with Paris´s bustling Bohemian community. Though Van Gogh managed to acquire all materials he needed to paint, models were hard to come by leading him to begin a period of self-portraits, of which he created nearly 30.

Thanks to partnerships established with public and private collections, the Fondation presents one or more original canvases by Vincent van Gogh all year round, accompanied by with a changing selection of works by internationally renowned contemporary artists. The Fondation also offers a wide range of in-house and extramural cultural events and activities: artist talks and podium discussions, symposia, film screenings, creative workshops and courses, performances and concerts, as well as guided tours and educational activities tailored to different publics. www.fondation-vincentvangogh-arles.org Van Gogh walk Van Gogh wanders about the city exploring his surroundings and incessantly paints the transformation of the natural world in spring: landscapes, cafés, squares and toiling harbour workers. Everything he sees inspires him and is captured in a painting. This very unique tour presents the impressions and many locations featured in the paintings. This half-day tour, on foot in the streets of Arles, begins at the Tourism Office and leads to view enamelled lava reproductions placed near the spots he painted some of his most famous works. Other places and themes outside of Arles, such as the famous Langlois bridge or the countryside towards Montmajour Abbey, inspired the painter.

ArlesFondation Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh spent more than 14 months in the city of Arles. During this time, he became an “artist of the sun” creating his timeless masterpiece that portrayed the landscape of the Provence in vibrant colours. Here, he created nearly 200 paintings and 100 drawings including “Starry Night over the Rhône”. The “Yellow House” that he later rented in Arles became a hub for like-minded artists. Paul Gaugin was also a guest - with dramatic consequences. During their intense conflict-ridden collaboration, Van Gogh developed a nervous disorder that led him to famously self mutilate his own ear.
