WelcomeWelcome to the first ever UK Robotics Week. There can be little doubt that Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) are going to change many aspects of our lives. We are now reaching a point where science fiction is coming closer to science fact. We are near to realising a world where machines not only address laborious, repetitive or dangerous tasks on our behalf, but one where they act cooperatively with each other and us, drawing on knowledge and experience to learn and take decisions.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funds the research and training that will bring the necessary skills and innovation together to ensure the UK is at the forefront of RAS developments. We are working with partners such as Innovate UK and other research councils to speed the impacts of research for application in society and the economy. In 2015 EPSRC we announced the formation of the RAS Network. It provides leadership, a coordinating function for academic activities in the UK, and seeks to expand collaboration with the RAS dedicated facilities and Centres for Doctoral Training EPSRC funds across the country. The Network has successfully developed the concept of UK Robotics Week which will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to push the boundaries further. I hope everyone involved from children to industry to government will enjoy participating in, and see the value of, the activities planned. Prof Philip NelsonCEO, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

Acting autonomously or in close collaboration with humans, Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) have a broad range of new and established applications. As the underlying technologies are being further developed and translated from laboratory settings to real-world applications, RAS is playing an increasingly important role for the UK’s economy and its future growth. The UK-RAS Network is established with the mission to provide academic leadership, expand collaboration with industry and integrate and coordinate activities at the EPSRC funded RAS capital facilities, Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) and partner universities across the UK. We are delighted to launch the first UK Robotics Week. The focus of this week-long series of events and activities, to be held annually during the last week of June, is to shine a spotlight on the UK’s technology leadership in robotics and autonomous systems, and to engage the nation’s schools, colleges and universities in developing the digital skills needed to drive the UK’s future economy. The Robotics Week is intended to act as a forum for discussing the technological, commercial, legal, ethical and social aspects of robotics. During the week, there will be a wide range of events from symposia, workshops, hackathons, public lectures and competitions throughout the country. It adds focus to a thriving programme of existing robotics activities that take place throughout the year. By linking to other key events in the robotics calendar, it aims to ensure that robotics remains high on the agenda as one of the transformative technologies of today and tomorrow. I would like to thank all those who have put in a tremendous amount effort in making the UK Robotics Week a success and we look forward to meeting you during the events. RoboticsHackathon The Educational Robotics Hackathon is

a hackathon to design and prototype novel educational robots for use in schools and homes; creating something new, fun and educational for kids, parents and teachers. The London Educational Robotics Hackathon is open to all participants (18+) and is free to enter for both individuals and teams. Participants from schools and universities, industry and other organisations as well as individuals are all welcome. Experienced teachers and educators will be especially welcome at this hackathon. The event is particularly suited to undergraduate and post graduate students as well as technically-minded individuals wanting to gain experience of collaboratively creating new ideas for robotics in teaching. The Educational Robotics Hackathon is sponsored by IET Communities and the UK-RAS Network. Potential sponsors are invited to contact the organisers. The hackathon will be run by the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace. You can start thinking about your entries and designs immediately. Designs can be based on existing ideas or products – it’s the added ideas and educational value that matters.

The hackathon will be held over a two week period. The fortnight starts with a kick-off meeting on Friday 03 June and concludes with a final concentrated weekend of work (18-19 June). Each team will be sponsored to spend up to £100 in parts – and there will be various useful components available from sponsors. Judging criteria will be based on designs that are educational, engaging and fun for pupils and teachers and emphasise the principles and practice of robotics. Ideally, designs will be easy to adopt and use by teachers and integrate into the UK curriculum. The aim is to design something that makes a real difference to teaching and that inspires children to understand and enjoy robotics, engineering and technology. Please visit the website for further details about entering or sponsoring this hackathon. Register now: http://www.theiet.org/events/2016/236477.cfm

RobotOrchestra

www.roboticsweek.uk/robotorchestra.htm

The organisers of an exciting new interactive project, which has been launched in Manchester, are appealing for volunteers to take part. The ‘Robot Orchestra’ initiative aims to create an environmentally-friendly ensemble of ‘robots’ playing instruments and recycled materials. People are being encouraged to get involved by salvaging and donating unused technology, building the robots and the instruments, writing computer code, hosting events or sharing their musical expertise.

Page 24

The orchestra will consist of ‘electronic brains’ which create music by playing real instruments including violins, glockenspiels and xylophones, as well as redundant technology such as computer floppy disk drives and old desk fans which will themselves make sounds. These will all be conducted by a robot designed by Siemens, the Hallé Orchestra has composed a piece of music for the robots to play, and lots of independent composers are also writing pieces. Manchester-based artists are also being approached to get involved, which will enable the orchestra to have a truly local feel.

“I want to show how everyone can discover the secret engineer inside themselves - and build an amazing machine from their imagination,” said Professor Danielle George, the project’s organiser. “A new musical engineering revolution has begun. I want to showcase the ingenuity, creativity and revolutionary spirit of the people of Manchester, and to explore how a city might creatively re-engineer and spread environmental and creative practices through performance.”

Rehearsals are currently taking place, and the orchestra will give its full debut performance in July during the Euroscience Open Forum - Europe’s largest science conference. If you want to get involved, visit www.robotorchestra.co.uk, where you also can sign up to the mailing list to receive news and updates. The Scenario

During the Home Robot hands-on experience, you will be programming a care robot to help with an imaginary elderly person that lives alone and is visited by a carer once a week:

“Although Ethel has some movement difficulties (she uses a Zimmer frame) she is able to cope relatively well with daily living activities, has relatively good eyesight and likes reading, however she finds carrying objects around the house difficult. Ethel has some hearing issues and finds remembering to do things, such as calling her family regularly or taking a series of medications at various intervals during the day confusing. She often forgets to turn off room lighting or the TV when not needing them. She also takes very little exercise and often falls asleep watching TV. This causes her to be rather restless at night. Because of her hearing difficulties her TV volume is very loud - and thus hearing the doorbell becomes difficult. Her carer has suggested that she takes more fluids as sometimes she risks becoming dehydrated, But Ethel forgets to do this. Ethel’s best friend is Mabel - and sometimes they organise a day out together but Ethel forgets to call Mabel.”

www.roboticsweek.uk/tortoises.htm

Nearly 70 years ago, Bristol scientist William Grey Walter built his pioneering tortoise robots. His experiments showed how simple machines could behave in interesting and lifelike ways. Today, researchers at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory continue his legacy in taking inspiration from nature to make robots intelligent and interactive. Now, students in BRL's FARSCOPE Centre for Doctoral Training are building modern versions of the tortoises to introduce the principles of robotics. Visitors will be able to meet the research students who built the new tortoises, find out how they work, learn how to programme them, and train them to perform simple tasks. Meet the Tortoises kicks off a vibrant programme of Robot Encounters in At-Bristol. This summer the science centre will play host to a new wave of robotics. Collaborative, social machines you can interact with to lift the lid on cutting-edge research happening in Bristol and shaping our global future.

Bristol Robotics Laboratory is a partnership between the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. See www.brl.ac.uk for more information. The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Autonomous and Robotic Systems (FARSCOPE) is a joint PhD programme delivered through BRL. Please see farscope.bris.ac.uk for more information.
