Signals Out of Sequence P3008 Camshaft Position Sensor (G40), Signal Outside of the Tolerance P30C0 Poor Quality Fuel SOLUTION: When these fault codes are stored, it is usually not caused by a fault in the actual sensor, but the fault is stored because the engine control unit registers that the camshaft position is out of tolerance. The fault is often caused by a worn timing chain. Therefore, first of all check the camshaft timing when these fault codes are stored. Often you can also read out via parameter measurement that ignition timing varies a lot. Noise: It is normal that the engine rattles a bit for the first 3 seconds after a cold start. If the noise lasts longer than 3 seconds, you should measure the oil pressure while the noise is present. Often, problems occur regarding the oil pump in these engines. Therefore, it is important to check the oil pressure in case of noise or worn timing chain (see page 2). Experience values for chain tensioner travel (1.4 TSI): New chain and tensioner will cause the tensioner to move approx. 78 mm Already at a 16 mm travel, you can hear a rattling sound of approx. 30 seconds after a cold start Max limit for tensioner movements is approx. 25 mm We recommend to measure the tensioner travel before and after fitting a new chain kit. This provides a clear indication of how far the chain has stretched. For example, if the chain is not extended, the fault may be in the lubrication system. CONTINUED…

    SOLUTION CONTINUED:

    The oil pump is a weakness in these engines andshould always be checked in case of timing chainproblems.Always check oil pressure data for the engine inquestion.For example 1.4 TFSI CAXA data: Oil pressure at 2000rpm = at least 2.0 bars.Oil pressure above 3000 rpm = approx. 3.23.5 bars.

    If this problem is ignored it may cause the timingchain to loosen so much that the chain may jump andbend the valves.We often see that part of the problem is caused by afaulty/worn chain tensioner.Chain, tensioner and toothed wheel come as acomplete kit to these engines.

    At timing chain and tensioner replacement, it is important to make sure that you fit the latest type ofchain tensioner.This applies to both OE and aftermarket tensioners.

    In 1.2 TSI, we have experienced chain problems already at 26,000 km.

    If necessary, see bulletin No. 5954 for general precautions in case of abnormal timing chain wear.

    If this type of oil separator isfitted (1.4L engines CAX*), youshould also check the screws tothe oil separator.The screws may lack or becomeloose.We recommend to replace thesescrews and use lockingcompound at tightening.Tightening torque = 2 Nm+90degrees.

    SOLUTION CONTINUED:

    It is important to reset the adaptations in the engine control unit after a chain repair.

    If this is neglected, the following symptoms may occur:b Cut outsb Lack of engine powerb Fault code P30C0 stored

    After adaptation reset, you should follow the directions of the diagnostic tool with regard to thethrottle valve adaptation.After that, it is important to take the car for a drive of minimum 5 km of varied driving.Only after this drive will the engine reach its full performance and fault code P30C0 can possibly bedeleted.
